Suspect Allegedly Behind Jewish School Shooting in Police Standoff — Claiming Al Qaeda Links

TOULOUSE, France (AP) – A French gunman claiming al-Qaeda links and suspected in the killings of three Jewish children, a rabbi and three paratroopers barricaded himself in an apartment Wednesday after a predawn police raid erupted into a firefight.

Hundreds of riot police poured in to surround the building in the southwestern city of Toulous after three police officers were wounded in the failed initial attempt to arrest the 24-year-old Frenchman of Algerian descent.

After hours of trying to persuade him to surrender, police evacuated the five-story building, escorting residents out using the roof and fire truck ladders.

Interior Minister Claude Gueant said the suspect told police he belonged to al-Qaida and wanted to take revenge for Palestinian children killed in the Middle East. The suspect also said he was angry about French military intervention abroad, and had spent time in Afghanistan and Pakistan, Gueant said.

The suspect threw a handgun out a window in exchange for a device to talk to authorities, but he has more weapons, authorities said. Gueant said weapons had been found in the suspect’s car.

An Interior Ministry official identified the suspect as Mohammad Merah, who has been under surveillance for years for having “fundamentalist” views. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

There was some confusion over the suspect’s background, because a person of the same name was arrested in southern Afghanistan five years ago and escaped from his prison cell in Kandahar province in a 2008 mass jailbreak, according to Kandahar provincial spokesman Ahmad Jawed Faisal. However, Faisal says their records also show that Merah was an Afghan citizen from Kandahar province.

Police swept in soon after 3 a.m. (0200 GMT; 10 p.m. EDT Tuesday) on the residential neighborhood in Toulouse where the suspect was holed up. At one point, volleys of gunfire were exchanged. An elite squad was handling the negotiations.

The raid was part of a manhunt for a shooter who has killed seven people, including French soldiers and Jewish school children, in three attacks in the Toulouse area. In Monday’s attack, the three young children and a rabbi were killed.

A few hours into the raid, Gueant said the suspect “is no longer talking.” Earlier, he had promised several times to surrender in the afternoon, Gueant said.

“Terrorism will not be able to fracture our national community,” President Nicolas Sarkozy declared Wednesday on national television before heading to the funeral services for two paratroopers killed and another injured in nearby Montauban.

The series of attacks – every four days since March 11 – began with the killing of another paratrooper in Toulouse.

The interior minister, at the scene of the standoff, said the suspect tossed from his window a Colt 45 used in each of the three attacks. He has other weapons, like an AK-47 assault rifle.

“The main concern is to arrest him, and to arrest him in conditions by which we can present him to judicial officials,” Gueant said, explaining authorities want to “take him alive … It is imperative for us.”

A judicial official said the suspect’s mother, his brother and a companion of the brother were detained for questioning. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak publicly.

The interior minister had said the suspect’s brother “is also engaged in the Salafi ideology,” a reference to a fundamentalist interpretation of Islam.

The suspect “said he wants to avenge the deaths of Palestinians,” Gueant told reporters, adding that he is “less explicit” about why he killed French paratroopers. The paratroopers were of Muslim and French Caribbean origin, but the interior minister said the suspect told them the ethnic origin has nothing to do with his actions. “He’s after the army,” Gueant said.

Police, who were still questioning people elsewhere, have followed every lead and hypothesis from Islamist terrorist to a deranged ex-soldier or someone following in the footsteps of Norway’s Anders Behring Breivik, the rightist extremist who killed 77 people in a rampage last year.

Sarkozy has said a “monster” was on the loose in France and vowed to track him down. Sarkozy has played up nationalist themes in his bid for a second term in upcoming elections. He raised the terror alert in the region to its highest level ever, which put hundreds of reinforcements into the area.

Cedric Delage, regional secretary for a police union, said a key to tracking the suspect was the powerful Yamaha motorcycle that he has used in attacks. Delage confirmed reports that the motorcycle was a dark gray one that had been stolen March 6. The frame was painted white, the color witnesses saw in the school attack.

According to Delage, one of the suspect’s brothers went to a motorcycle sales outfit to ask how to modify the GPS tracker, raising suspicions. The vendor then contacted police, Delage said.

The shooter has proved to be a meticulous operator. At the site of the second paratrooper killing, police found the clip for the gun used in all three attacks – but no fingerprints or DNA on it.

Police studied the online communications by the first paratrooper killed. He was shot March 11 after posting an announcement online to sell his motorcycle, the police official said, and investigators believe the gunman responded to the ad and lured the paratrooper into an isolated place to kill him.

The schoolchildren killed, all of French-Israeli nationality, were buried in Israel on Wednesday. Relatives sobbed inconsolably by the gravesides.

In Paris on Wednesday, a package bomb exploded at the Indonesian Embassy, causing minor damage, but no injuries, police said. The source of the package was unclear. Indonesia’s foreign minister said it was too early to say whether there was any link between the mail bomb and an attack on the attacks in southern France.

    Three little children were killed. The youngest was three years old. The other two were six and seven. The murderer or for pc correctness alleged murderer is a 24 year old male. The Rabbi and his children three and six were shot at point blank range to the head. The little seven year old girl was shot the same way while trying to run away from this evil. This is the face of hate. Anyone who would murder an innocent little child is a monster. Where is the outrage from America? Where is the outrage from the world? Where is the outrage from your neighbor? In France 500 thousand of it‘s citizens are Jewish and it’s population has 5 million Muslims. The hate that Islam has for the Jewish people is methodical. We see it as irrational. The followers of Islam do not. This murderer planned this, he had a camera to film his evil. Inside we should be weeping for the loss of life of sweet innocent little children and a father standing by a school.

    There’s absoultely no evidence that Israel had anything to do with the killing of Iranian scientists in Iran. None! Even, the Arab propaganda machine, al Jazeera TV hasn‘t reported that it was Israel’s responsibility. Conjecture, yes. Proof, a complete zero. I conclude that the assasinations were completed by opponents to the little Hitler’s regime in Iran. My conclusion is just as valid as anyone’s, as there’s no evidence that Israel, or the little Hitler’s opponents, caused the deaths of the Iranian nuclear scientists. Absolutely, none, and you know it, and so does, “The Jerk”. (What an appropriate name, by the way!)

    I have been reading the comments posted on this article and would like to comment from my perspective:
    - Israel if left alone would not go after anyone. They seem to be threatened continuously for simply being.
    - Israel, it seems does do targeted “liquidations” of certain persons that it deems as a danger to the country . Doesn’t the u.s and others take similar actions thousands of miles from its shores via wars, drones and special ops?
    - anyone who remotely equates and tries to justify murdering kids to the removal of threats to a country and, or it’s citizens is being purposely naive.
    Let me ask the equivalency proponents this question:
    Soldiers and non military persons of various countries, Canada, France, Italy, Britain, Germany, Spain, Australia, U.S., Poland, Holland, etc. have taken part in killing enemy combatants and sometimes civilians in parts of the middle east and other places in the world. Would you feel equally sanguine about little kids from these countries being murdered in school by an angry whomever for whatever as you do about Jewish kids being murdered because of the actions of a foreign country protecting its security?
    Do you live in one of these countries. Do you have kids or know kids who go to school. Would you still feel ok with a similar tragedy or is ok because the kids in France were Jewish and Israel has no right to defend itself.

      When I heard this story on the radio, it said that French Authorities were looking for some sore ot nazi type with shooting experience. I laughed, and said they are looking in the wrong direction, and that they need to look to he muslim population. Looks like I was right.

    The French government is responsible for this. They allow radical Muslims and terrorists to roam freely in France and kill at will. They made every effort to take this suspect alive instead of blowing his friken head off. France has a history of being taken over by others (Hitler) and history is about to repeat itself except for one thing, America should not and will not liberate them a second time.

    France needs to grow a set and kick these radical Islamic terrorists out of the country, better yet, kill them.

      My point is one of principle, and the lack of outrage when Jews were killing innocent Iranians in Iran. My anger is directed at this moral relativism and selective outrage. My concern is labeling one an anti-Semite, when the one being labeled is consistent in principle. My concern is the use of the label, when logic and reason tell a different story from the one you prefer.

      And my concern is that you said it’s the principled thing to equate murders in France to military action in Israel. That you refuse to accept there is a difference seems like you’re purposefully sticking your fingers in your ears and going “la la la, it’s all the same.”

      Note that I don‘t agree with many of Israel’s actions; but the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a very different matter than serial killings in France targeting Jews. Yes, in both situations people were killed; but that in no way makes them the equivalent situations.

      You’d have a point, perhaps, if this had been a Hamas member killing Israeli politicians. But a non-Palestinian killing Jewish children in a different country? No principled human would say they are the same.

      The Persians must be so embarrassed to have been overrun and taken over by the weak and pathetic Muhammad worshipers. How pathetic, they deserve to be killed just to put them out of their misery. The Persians were once one of the great civilizations, now they are a joke. They are so crazy with their Islam that they can’t even be trusted to have nuclear weapons. Hopefully Israel will just nuke them back a thousand years or so.

      Fact is, I am equating the killing of innocent human beings with the killing of innocent human beings. In your fictitious rationalization you call one murders and the other a military action. You do this to fit your unreal reality. In both France and Iran, civilians and military personnel were killed. If one is a military action, then the other must also be a military action. In that same vein, if one is a heinous crime, then the other must also be a heinous crime.

The Iranians, who were slaughtered by Ahmedinijad’s storm troopers, for daring to defy his regime, were fellow Moslems.       Iranian scientists working on their nuclear program have been assassinated in the past few years. It’s commonly held that Israel was behind these actions; the fact that Israel’s politicians tend to say things like “Weeeeeell, we’re not saying we did it, but more scientists are going to die if you don’t stop developing nukes” doesn’t help their sincerity very much.

      I think Jew reserve a right to kill because they kill without a reason. Like death penalty is the last defense line to the civilization. There is a time to everything, including killing. So if those muslim can kill any (ya, I mean any) infidel than why Jew can’t kill with some reasonable doubt?
      G-d is the ONE who preserve the ultimate killing in the end of human history… Jesus will kill with sword from his mouth in the last battle.
      Blood will be everywhere and the victory will be on G-d’s side. Whoever touch a Jew is lay a hand on Jesus. So which side are you on?
