Filipino Village Captures 21-Foot World-Record Shattering (Suspected) Killer Croc

Worlds Largest Captive Croc Caught; Suspected of Killing Fisherman

Last week, a 21-foot crocodile that weighs more than a ton was captured in the Philippines after being tracked for more than three weeks. With this success, villagers are already on the hunt for a second.

“There is a bigger one, and it could be the one creating problems,” wildlife official Ronnie Sumiller told The Associated Press by telephone from Bunawan, about 515 miles (830 kilometers) southeast of Manila.

“The villagers were saying 10 percent of their fear was gone because of the first capture,” Sumiller said. “But there is still the other 90 percent to take care of.”

The croc caught last week, a kind that villagers witnessed kill a water buffalo and is suspected of killing a fisherman in July, is now being shipped to an ecotourism park. There, Manila Mayor Edwin Cox Elorde said it will be the “biggest star of the park.” Seems like a light sentence for this killer.

According to CNN, this crocodile blasts the previous world’s largest crocodile held in captivity out of the water; it was only 18 feet. Watch CNN’s report:

Elorde said the male crocodile was captured along a creek in Bunawan township in Agusan del Sur province after a three-week hunt where it broke four traps and took 100 people to haul from the water. Once out of the water, a crane lifted it into a truck.

“We were nervous but it’s our duty to deal with a threat to the villagers,” Elorde told The Associated Press by telephone. “When I finally stood before it, I couldn’t believe my eyes.”

Now, Sumiller, backed by five village hunters he has trained, has set 20 steel cable traps with an animal carcass as bait along the creek where the first crocodile was caught and in a nearby vast marshland.

People in the farming town of about 37,000 people have been told to avoid venturing into marshy areas alone at night, Elorde said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Worlds Largest Captive Croc Caught; Suspected of Killing Fisherman

In this photo taken Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, a Philippine National Police officer stands next a giant saltwater crocodile which was captured by residents and crocodile farm staff along a creek in Bunawan township, Agusan Del Sur province in southern Philippines late Saturday. Mayor Cox Elorde of Bunawan said that dozens of villagers and experts ensnared the 21-foot (6.4-meter) male crocodile along a creek in his township after a three-week hunt. It was one of the largest crocodiles to be captured alive in the Philippines in recent years. (AP Photo)

Apparently you have never been to Mexico or a border town. Mexicans love both crocodile and turtle skin cowboy boots. They would have that lizard skinned, tanned and sh@@ kicking in a few hours.

That was quick and funny, Brad. I’m sure the late-night comics will be adding to that joke tonight…as they should. On a realistic note, this croc even though 21 feet long is obese and probably wouldn’t live much longer if it had to catch its own food. She still has the power to kill but is losing her speed. It’s width is way out of proportion to its length. They will feed her well at the Ecotourism Park, and when she dies I really hope they can preserve her body, and like hang her on the wall or something.

The Philippine Islands are not a capitalist but a 3rd world country with lots of card board & blue tarp housing (literally)! The people work hard for $6 a day and there is a high muslim and Abu Saaif influence there. This tall blonde American girl had “body guards” when I visited. I would love to go back but it‘s just a lil’ too scary for me!

Tex, The muslim and terrorist problems are mostly in the far south, like on Mindinao. I was stationed at Clark AB on the main island of Luzon. Pretty peaceful there. Not many cardboard and tarp shacks.
Yes they do work hard, when they work. I spent 8 years there and my wife is from there. It’s third world but up north, it’s not that bad. That countrys’ biggest problem is too many people and not enough industry. Crops are the biggest export with sugar and rice leading that. Manila is cosmopolitan in a couple of areas like Makati were most of the big shots live. Basically, you have two classes there, the very wealthy and everybody else. It’s not as bad as some here try to make you think, they are happy with thier country and we should respect that.

Add chimpanzees. They’re just a little too human like. They’re 3 times stronger than a strong man and when they attack – they bite, usually, aiming for the nose first.

      @ Greenstream,

Yeah, the Philippines is pretty much a capitalist country, but most of the country is not industrialized. Many people forget that the Philippines was a territory of the United States up until 1946. They had the second largest economy until the 70s when the president, Ferdinand Marcos, decided he didn’t want to step down at the end of his term and took over the country as a dictator. Unless you’re young, you probably remember him and his crazy wife with all the shoes. He wrecked their economy and they’ve been trying to recover ever since they finally overthrew him in the 1980s.
