Suspended Priest Sells Gays and Lesbians ‘Catholic Nuptial Mass’ for $750

Geoffrey Farrow, a Catholic priest who was suspended back in 2008 over his support for gay marriage, is now selling what he calls “Catholic Nuptial Masses” to both heterosexual and homosexual couples. The weddings are being offered on the defunct clergyman’s web site, FatherGeoffWeddings.com. The California Catholic Daily has more:
On his wedding website, the suspended priest is still pictured wearing a Roman collar. “As a Catholic Priest of 25 years, I also served as a Chaplain in the United States Air Force providing services for people of many different beliefs,” says Farrow in a message to prospective customers. “I enjoy providing weddings, blessings and civil unions for all couples, regardless of their beliefs. I want you to feel at ease and fully enjoy your special day.”
The cost of a faux Catholic marriage by Rev. Farrow? If you’re looking to have a Catholic Mass it will run you $750, while secular wedding services only cost $500. In addition to these fees, he also charges 75 cents per mile if the wedding is more than 60 miles from his Studio City, California, base. If the event is more than 200 miles away, clients must call him to discuss travel, lodging and per diem fees. In discussing the services he provides to gays and lesbians, he writes:
All of these wedding rites may be adapted for Same-sex couples. Sadly, in California at this time Civil Marriage Licenses are denied to Same-sex couples. We can however celebrate Union Ceremonies for Same-sex couples. We continue to work for the day that Same-sex couples will enjoy the same full Civil Rights as Opposite-sex couples currently are afforded.
According to LifeSiteNews.com, Colin Dougherty, a spokesman for the diocese, said this week that he will seek out more information from church leadership regarding the former priest’s new business. He admitted, though, that this isn’t the first time he has heard about these activities. After making these remarks, he later claimed that the church declined to comment further on the matter.
Farrow is a homosexual and a gay rights activist. On his blog, he regularly discusses his opposition to church teaching on same-sex relationships, among other related policy topics. In his most recent piece, the former priest takes on critics of a new law requiring educators to teach about gay history. The Blaze covered this controversial legislation last week. The now vocal proponent for gay rights officially broke with the Catholic church on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008. He surprised parishioners that day when he urged them to vote “no” on California’s controversial Prop 8 bill. Five days later, he was removed as pastor of the Newman Center, he lost his salary and health benefits and he was told not to return.
Now, he’s a gay rights advocate, speaker and wedding aficionado. Considering his break with the Catholic Church, it seems a bit odd that he continues to wear his collar. Perhaps it adds to the “Catholic Nuptial Mass” experience.
