Swamp People, Hippies, Hijabs, and a Gay Couple: See How the Obama Admin Is Branding America Abroad (& the LGBT Adviser Who’s Behind It!)

Obama's America? Well, It's how were being advertised.
Last week, President Obama made history by being the first sitting president to publicly support gay marriage. Now, his administration is the first to openly advertise homosexuality around the globe as an “American ideal.” The Blaze has uncovered documents that show how central gay rights themes have been to the administration and how they are being used by the administration to propagate a rebranding of America and its values.
Two years ago, the Travel Promotion Act of 2010 established the Corporation for Travel Promotion, or Brand USA. This “public-private entity“ was tasked with ”rekindling the world’s love affair with the USA – the place, the spirit, and the dream,” according to Brand USA’s CEO Jim Evans. Brand USA is funded by new taxes imposed on tourists visiting the U.S. and is governed by an 11-member board of directors appointed by Obama’s Secretary of Commerce.
Brand USA has recently come out with a series of ads, playing now in the UK, Japan and Canada, that craft a new vision of America for the world to see. The ads are intended to ”open up some minds as to what America really is,” according to Anne Madison, a Brand USA spokesperson.
But the new ads, titled “Land of Dreams,” deviate alarmingly from the patriotic baseball, apple pie and picket fence vision of “traditional” America. In fact, the only cowboy featured in the ad is…raking a beach?

The ads are a dizzying whirlwind of sequences and peculiar staged events, some confoundedly foreign to what might be considered an “American experience.”For example, the ad attempts to define America with scenes such as: a man raking a huge sand pattern alone on a beach, two Muslim women in hijabs shopping in New York City, a Hindu festival, a Hispanic biker gang, a traditional African bongo circle under a bridge, a Cuban low-rider parade, a pony-tailed old man in a canoe in a swamp, an interracial marriage ceremony, an Asian grandmother riding a Harley through the forest, a man catching a hawk whilst parachuting over a cliff, and what seems to be a colorful-hippie-powder-blowing-festival (see below).
Two hot political topics are blatantly showcased in the ad. First, it could be mistaken as simply a “visit New Orleans” campaign, with seemingly every other scene including a creole shot from the French Quarter. Ironic, since New Orleans was ranked one of the 10 most dangerous cities in the world this year, despite being the recipient of $142 billion in engorged tax payer spending. Also, the incidence of armed robbery in New Orleans has increased 71% since last year, a national record, and not exactly where you want to send your tourists.

Second, in a prominent scene, two gay men are shown riding a trolley together, one sleeping on the other’s shoulder. And the actors featured in the scene are a gay couple who were specifically recruited for a “homosexual presence” in the ad. According to an interview with Outsmart Magazine, the two actors, Edward R. Cox and Gideon Hodge, are to be “Face of Gay America to the World.” In the interview, the actors gushed over the role:
“They told us this was the first-ever travel commercial for America. And they wanted gay representation in it!”
And of course, were gay friendly now
The direct connection from the administration to the controversial commercials has now come to light through Obama official John Connor. Connor presently serves as Obama’s Director of the Office of White House Liaison at the United States Department of Commerce. He is openly gay and was in charge of Obama’s LGBT outreach efforts in the northeastern United States during the 2008 Presidential campaign.
Recent documents uncovered by The Blaze show that Mr. Connor was tasked with creating and organizing Brand USA. Connor is named in Brand USA’s incorporation papers, and hand-selected every director on their board.
It seems that the Administration’s vision of America is roundly represented in the creation and promotion of these commercials. Soon, ten countries will have the ads flooding their airwaves, with more foreign marketplaces to come. $12.3 million dollars will be spent to promote the ads, not including production costs.

As someone living in Florida, the scenery here is gorgeous and the nature parks are a huge attraction. Apparently Benny Johnson has never been to them, and that’s a shame. Maybe he should visit the south sometime.
I’m also not sure why foreigners would be interested in our sports teams or military; as this is an ad campaign trying to attract foreigners to come to the country and spend money, neither of those would likely appeal. When I‘ve gone abroad I’ve never checked out soccer or rugby games, nor gone to military bases to check out their troops. Heck, seeing the military while on vacation is usually a bad sign: means something’s up!

I see this ad as what people from affluent nations want to see in order to vacation here and spend money. I don’t see why you all are so offended. It seems we all have pretty thin skin lately.

So it looks as if we are entertined with the same footage our gov’t is using to portray us to the world. Television is a propaganda tool that is regulated by the government to TEACH you how to live. I worked in the hotel business, the front desk and one day I had a group of people staying there who were working for the United States military on a base just a few miles away from our property. My manager, my fellow employees and I were proud to have these gentlemen staying there. These men were all middle eastern and fluently spoke Arabic, they had just gotten home from Afghanistan. I had more than just one person call me and complain about this honorable individuals, men who served this country and them simply because of the color of their skin and a language the spoke. I’m sorry but that is clearly racism, there may be cause for concern sometimes but is that the America some of you want? Because by the sound of your un-Christ-like comments here it really does. You people really make me nauseous sometimes, to think my brothers and sisters behave like this on the net…

Passion for America was ignited by the fact that all 20-21 century gadgets were invented in the US: computers, Internet, cell phones, iPods, Ipads, Iphones, Google, Facebook – expressed itself in international English learning, that became billion dollar industry. People copied Americans in everything: way to dress, behavior, and business practice.

I so greatly wish that many of us could go somewhere new and start building our country from scratch. I supposed we would need to go to another planet for that to happen. It is hard for me to imagine, with any hope of satisfaction, what living in the U.S. will be like in the next century given our current direction. It is a certainty that most of our long-loved freedoms will be gone…yes, long gone. Neither I nor my children will be around then but hopefully there will be some who are still proud to be Americans and will fight to regain those freedoms.

Trust neither of the traditional parties. Look at individuals, not their party label. The labels mean absolutely nothing anymore, if they ever did. Personal voting records mean everything. I don’t listen to speeches because they are all liars; even the good ones. It’s voting records that I pay attention to.
Don’t reelect anyone who has been in office for three terms. If the government hasn’t the guts to establish term limits then we voters can enforce our own. Some of the “good folks” will be voted out, true enough, but after three terms in their respective position it’s time to go or move up or down to another level. No entitlement positions and no lifetime on the public dole allowed.
Never give any money to the RNC, the DNC, any PAC, etc. You lose control of it because you will have no idea how it’s spent. Do your own research on the candidates. Pick those you are comfortable with; preferably those who understand our Constitution. Give the money directly to their campaign. The committees and PAC’s are subversive and the more money they have access to the worse off are our liberties.
Teach your children, your friends, your relatives and anybody else with the good sense to listen to you these same things. It’s not going to change anything overnight but if enough folks will wake up and adopt a similar strategy we

Half of my family, my mother’s family is fresh off the boats immigrants, Germany and Quebec (French speaking Canada) the other half of my family is made up of someone who qualified for the Daughters of the American Revolution and the poor son of Shanty Irish immigrants. Both of my parents were born in this country. My father served in WWII and Korea. My Jewish father-in-law hit the beaches in the first wave at Normandy and served all the way to Vietnam. I was born on a military base and my whole adult life has been connected to the Department of Defense. I have served my country (as a civilian) on foreign soil. I still serve my country. So go ahead, try and take my country from me.

I remember walking down a street in Asia, in front of a U.S. military base where it said Yankee in the native language, yes, I could read it, and “Go Hell” in English. There were anti-American protests most Fridays in the Spring. They don’t see us as “down-to-earth“ and ”problem-solving” they see us as loud, ignorant, and incredibly arrogant. This ad is trying to change that image by showing how diverse and sophisticated we are.

It therefore seems strange that this is how someone would advertise the US to a potential visitor…unless of course you wish to redefine the country according to your own “enlightened” vision of it.
When you see a pro-tourism video for Philadelphia, you expect Rocky, cheesesteaks, the Liberty Bell, etc. Now imagine if the city forced its residents to subsidize a tourism video that sidestepped the iconic staples of Philadelphia’s identity, but instead showed people taking SCUBA classes, eating deep-dish Chicago-style pizza, belly dancing, and participating in Wiccan ceremonies. There is nothing wrong with any of these things, but they do not collectively represent the city experience to most residents and tourists alike.
America’s strength was the development of a vibrant monoculture that benefitted from rich and diverse influences, much like rock music did in the 60s. It was the Beatles drawing from Chuck Berry and Ravi Shankar.
The big sin of multi-culture is that it sacrifices the evolution of the larger shared experience and identity in favor of maintaining pockets of closed-minded cultural isolationists.

I don’t know about you, but I live around a lot of immigrants. There are shops within walking distance of my house from Africa, Asia, and Subcontinental Asia. I’ve lived in a foreign country for 10 years. I have traveled across, by car, the entire Western U.S. I have spent the night in at least 29 states. I visited I don’t know how many National Parks and seen people from all over the world there. The people who were often missing where “Americans”. Football and American soldiers do not sell well in other countries. Tell me what you think should have been in that video, because I thought it was gorgeous. What is supposed to be there. What iconic images would you include?

Right now you are correct, though, in that America currently is a “salad bowl” as it is rotting like a salad does when left unattended in the refrigerator. The notion of a melting pot meant that those who came here from other places kept some of their traditions but merged into American civilization and became “American” which vulcanizes us as a people creating greater strength as a nation. The whole “salad bowl” thing that is going on now will surely bring us to destruction.

We enjoy seeing the different groups from different people coming together. Have you been around the country? Have you seen the differences? Have you seen the Native Americans in the Southwest, or the Irish in Boston? Have you seen the Jewish kids in L.A.? How about Chinatown in NYC or San Francisco? I was in Flushing, Queens a couple of years ago, and the smells coming from the vendors reminded me of my time in Asia. I have Africans in my neighborhood. I love to see the women and girls in their gorgeous dresses. And my friend from Long Island lamented the lack of Kaiser rolls in California. He loathed sour dough, but my family loves the stuff. Boudin’s in San Francisco is the best. America is a tapestry of different colors and patterns. Everyone has a place. It only looks rotten if you want everyone to be the same and to do things your way. When I was in Kansas, over 25 years ago, I went to a concert in the town park. There was a Jamaican steel drum band playinng Benny Goodman and White guys in cowboy hats and Black kids in hiphop wear were dancing with little old ladies. That is America to me.

I married a service brat, and we have made our living working for the Civil Service, including 10 years of living in Asia and working on bases there. I was in my 30s when I went overseas. We used to bring our children back to the States in the summers and car trip around the country. Hate to disappoint you, but I have never smoked pot. I couldn’t stand the smell. This ad is aimed at Indians, the Japanese, the Chinese, and Muslims from the Middle East and Indonesia, people who do want to do business here and they have lots of money. So, go ahead, make fun of them, it’s only their money they will spend elsewhere.

Where there is a muezzin a church, synagogue, or Buddhist temple cannot long exist. The laws in Muslim countries are horrible, so why would we want them here? In Dubai an expat wife has to have her husband’s permission to leave the house. Are you for this diversity?
Another thing it is bigoted in a way only the left could be that they show none of the diversity that they showed & not other stuff. We don’t need an advertising campaign to get people to com e here. It won’t hurt, but I think it more as a way to make a political statement & spread money to supporters, than as a legit campaign. I think visitors would be more concerned about public/personal safety than all the celebration of diversity. USC is being sued because they knew enough to cleverly word advertisements to hide crime stats & now 2 foreign Chinese students have been murdered. So you see they will come so long as they feel safe.
I think many folks are soured on Muslim refugees when we allow refugees from Somalia & then they tell us how to live in our own country. Taxi drivers don’t want to transport anyone who who is transporting a a sealed container of alcohol or has a dog. Then their children join Al Shabab.
There is also a lot of diversity among whites. To call someone whitebread is an insult. i would say fighting words. It is a way for the left to put done whites while seeming playing the victim & lamenting their whiteness.

I grew up in the 1980s, and the 1990s are still the “best” decade I’ve experienced. The 1980s gave us the Cold War fear for most of it and a recession for quite a bit. From what my parents talked about the 1960s weren’t much good either. Vietnam destroyed the respectability of our military. We came close to all-out nuclear war over the Cuban Missile Crisis. Racism was a huge issue, with the civil rights movement leading to public lynchings. The 1970s caused huge scandals with Nixon, a recession, and the oil crisis.
I feel you might have the rose-colored glasses of nostalgia on. The US has always had problems; they seem especially dire today, but I can‘t think of the time you’re talking about unless you go back to the 1950s… which were only great if you were a WASP. If you strayed outside that enclosed circle, it seems like a pretty rough time as well.

When I was growing up and in school, every morning we stood, faced the flag and said the Pledge of Allegiance and never ever had 1 kid balk or complain about saying the words “Under God”. Our History books were filled with facts about the wars, we learned all about the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution as well as learning about our Founding Fathers. Today there is little to nothing about that in History books. We had Christmas Concerts and sang traditional Christmas Songs such as Away in the Manger, Oh Holy Night or Silent Night and it was Christmas Vacation not Winter Break. We could hang traditional Christmas ornaments on our class Christmas tree and again no one ever complained. We said Merry Christmas and again no one ever complained. I could ride my bike without having to wear a helmet or safety pads or having to worry about being abducted. I played Tether Ball, Kick Ball and Dodge Ball during school recess and now are all banned because they are deemed “to dangerous” for our kids to play. We rode in the back of pick up trucks and seat belts were optional to wear, heck I can remember laying in the back window of my Parents old car when we traveled to my Grandparents house.

I see your point on many of the items, though some I object to. For example, you said:

True, but more kids were hurt before those items were created.

I agree that it is ridiculous to ban these.

Also ridiculous that this is mandated, though there’s no doubt at all that it saves lives. My parents told me they used to have drive-throughs where they could buy beer and wine…
But when it comes to things like being safer and not worried about being abducted, simple statistics show that it’s only the nostalgia. Violent crimes, kidnappings, etc. have been coming down for decades. At the same time we see more of it; the worst of the worst make the news we see each night. That’s what I meant by nostalgia.
I feel the government forcing itself into our lives through unnecessary and unwanted legislation and restrictions is the worst part of “today” that we didn’t see as much of “yesterday.”

I’m not scared at all; I just don’t look at the past and say “Hey, things were better back then overall.” No, every decade has its problems. Back then if a stranger came anywhere NEAR a child the neighbors (moms who were home during the day)would be out in a flash. There weren’t any breakins. You could go to bed and leave your door unlocked. Occasionally you had a kid fall out of a tree and break an arm or leg – and it was a medal of honor!. The worst violece at school wa an occasional fist fight (and they were pretty rare) and the teachers would make them shake hands afterwards and hold no grudges.
Police were not militarized and were our friends. One walked my little brother home after he got himself lost. Another time he was brought home by a bunch of teenagers – my mother invited them in for cake and milk as a thank you. Little dude was always wandering off – in todays world he would be kidnapped and killed – after being raped, of course.
Everybody knew their neighbors and you always had relatives near by. We would leave in the morning and wouldn’t come home until the streetlights went on – great adventures and nothing happened to anybody and our parents weren’t worried about our safety.
It was a great time to be a kid and the stories my parents and grandparents told of their childhood makes mine seems tame in comparison. This country has really gone to hell and liberals sacrificed the safety of the populace on purpose. They KNEW the public would die as a result of their polices and they made them anyway.

I’m a blue-eyed, fair-skinned, blonde of European heritage, though very little of it is WASP. I have no problem with being White. But Ron Paul supporters are not diverse. They are White, male, Protestant and between the ages of 18-34 and other than turning out for Ron Paul, they tend not to vote for anyone else. Not a really wide variation of ethnic background or world view or religious faith.
What is that rot about asking people in Asia or Africa to accept people from other races to promote diversity? I‘m sorry but it’s just too weird to comprehend. I would never do such an absurd thing. Are you saying that the U.S. is an exclusively WASP culture? Er, no, it isn’t. I’m a well-read, well-educated person; I happen to enjoy literature, art, and music. I speak some French. I like good food and good wine. I am a classicist. That usually gets me in trouble with you folks, you call me an Ivy League eliist, despite the fact that I grew up in a blue-collar home and attended public schools and state colleges. I don’t even know any Ivy Leaguers.

Shouldn’t we be promoting ideas and customs that are *traditionally American*??? Isn’t that what has made America great? Yes, some diversity is great. I’m sure most of us have many friends from other races or cultures. But while some diversity is good, creating commercial that does not include the majority of Americans (around 75% +) is misrepresenting the U.S.
This panel should not be made up of 100% left-wing progressives. It should at the very least be bi-partisan and include the Majorty Americans (not just white, if that’s what your mind automaticly went to).
