Syria Running for Seat on … UN Human Rights Council (And May Win)

UN Watch Reports Syria Running for Seat on UN Human Rights Council and May WinOn the same week that it was revealed Syria is running 27 torture centers in which detainees are forced to “suck their own blood off the floor,” the apparently not-quite-aptly named UN Human Rights Council is considering Syria as a member.

The UN watchdog group UN Watch is asking if the United Nations is “about to sink to a new low,” while The New York Post is sarcastically describing this latest development as “more Turtle Bay humor,” after the Manhattan neighborhood in which UN headquarters sits.

UN Watch discovered Syria’s candidacy in a draft resolution. It reports:

According to a U.S.-sponsored and EU-backed draft resolution that was debated today during informal meetings at the council in Geneva, the murderous regime of Bashar al-Assad is a declared candidate for a seat on the 47-nation U.N. body, in elections to be held next year at the 193-member General Assembly.

UN Watch’s Hillel Neuer believes Syria has a good chance of winning a slot due to typical UN back-room dealings.  He writes:

As part of the U.N.’s 53-nation Asian group, Syria’s candidacy would be virtually assured of victory due to the prevalent system of fixed slates, whereby regional groups orchestrate uncontested elections, naming only as many candidates as allotted seats.

That’s how non-democracies like China, Cuba, Russia and Saudi Arabia won their current seats, and how Pakistan and Venezuela are about to do the same.

Fears that Syria will indeed win—in a 2013 election for a position starting the following year—appear to have mobilized the U.S. and the European Union into taking the unprecedented action of asking the council to declare in advance that a candidate country, in this case Syria, be declared inherently disqualified to join its ranks.

UN Watch Reports Syria Running for Seat on UN Human Rights Council and May Win

The U.S. and EU’s request was opposed by some other countries, including China, Cuba, Egypt, Brazil, Russia and India, according to UN Watch, which says: “Shockingly, the perfectly reasonable attempt to keep Syria away from the world’s highest human rights body was met with strong resistance.”

Syria tried to get on the council last year, but after massive lobbying against the bid, it was decided Kuwait would replace Syria on the council.

This isn’t the first time the UN has considered Syria as an arbiter of human rights. Last November, UNESCO unanimously approved Syria’s membership on two of its human rights committees and to this day the Assad regime remains a full member of the committee that judges human rights complaints and the committee dealing with human rights organizations.

UN Watch describes past unusual activities at the UN:

In the past decade, the U.N. Human Rights Council elected Col. Muammar Gaddafi’s Libya as chair, hailed Sri Lanka’s “promotion and protection of all human rights” after its army had killed thousands of civilians, and convened an emergency session to lament the death of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, founder of the Hamas terrorist organization.

Even so, historians will now have to decide whether the U.N.’s flagship human rights body is about to sink to a new low.

An estimated 3,000 Syrians were killed in June, making it the bloodiest month since the uprising began, according to the Syria Network for Human Rights. The network estimates some 16,000 have been killed since the uprising began more than a year ago.

Just Thursday, Norwegian Maj. Gen. Robert Mood who heads the now-suspended U.N. monitoring mission in Syria said the mission would remain on hold due to the escalation and “unprecedented” violence.

………and we want to allow these schmucks to make laws for us??? Hillary signd treaties with these people??? They are ANTI anything we stand for. The only reason the UN was located here was so we could get an idea of who ran their countries and a attempt to contact and identify their security people!!!
After Stalin, we didn’t know who ran Russia until the “Open Sky” proposals at the UN.

The U(ugly) N (numbskulls) is a collection of fools who ‘lil berry’ and ‘horrible hillary’ are about to surrender the U.S. to by the method of the Arms Trade treaty. We should cut off all funding, send the bums home and turn the building into a low income housing unit.

The UN was a dying entity here until our illustrious leftist president came into office. Along with Bloomberg’s help, the UN is again getting building permits and renovating what was a building on its way out of NY. Stupid stuff like this article demonstrates why the UN should be thrown out of the US and our tax dollar funding ended. The Progressives are in bed with the concept, and from this comes no good to us, the most powerful country in the world (in decline). Agenda 21 will take our lands, our fishing rights, our guns, and our freedoms, and it is happening before our eyes and most politicians don’t even know what is going on in front of their face, especially the local ones that are being used by the one world government jokers. END THE UN NOW!

We have NO BUSINESS being apart of this Organization. It has lost its sight on the original goals, and now has become a Third-World attack on Prosperous Nations, in thier bid to transfer their wealth!!!!

We should get out of the UN and send it packing from our shores. We would save a lot of money to help pay for health insurance for those who can’t afford health care insurance.

The UN should be moved out of the USA and moved to somewhere where it cant be corrupted and all Veto rights should be removed from all nations

As has already been verified though……it was George Soros’s Human Rights Watch organization that was responsible for revealing the existence of the Syrian torture centers.

      @ KidCharlemagne

      Thanks for that link.

I had a good look around and discovered that they have about 280 staff members. In “financials”, I discovered the “total salaries and benefits”. For 2011, it was a whopping $24 million! And the travel expenses would embarress Al Gore! They call themselves “non-profit”, but check out their investment portfolio.

I won’t go into all the other eye-opening, jaw-dropping details as you guys can look for yourselves.

Suffice it to say that this is a very well-heeled organisation and they treat themselves extremely well.

Oh, and as you point out, George Soros is backing them. Need anything more be said?

This is the make-up and voting power of the UN Human Rights Commission:

    African States (13 seats)
    Asian States (13 seats)
    Eastern European States (6 seats)
Latin American & Caribbean States (8 seats)
Western European & Other States (7 seats)

The “Western European & Other States” is us civilised countries. The United States has refused to join it and maintain “observer status” but you are considered to be part of this group. NZ and Aust come under the contemptuous “other”.

See how this works? The “WE&OS“ group consists of the countries which pay almost all of the money used by the UN and who supply most of the ”peacekeeping” forces. And yet their voting power borders on the irrelevent.

Another point is that the charter contains a “defamation of religion” clause. Basically it is an anti-blasphemy law. Care to guess which religious group had that inserted?

Did you guess the OIC (Organisation of the Islamic Conferences)? Which leads straight to its umbrella group, the Muslim Brotherhood.

The smallest amount of research leads one to the inescapable conclusion that the whole organisation (the UN) is a collossal sham. A confidence trick. A rort.

We are paying our sworn enemies truckloads of money and conferring legitimacy on them. And getting shafted as we do it.

Slowly, painfully slowly, the west is waking up and the UN’s days as a VIP lounge for thieves and murderers will eventually end.
