Syrian Activists Claim Bashar al Assad Regime Killed Hundreds in Daraya, Near Damascus

Syrian activists are claiming to have discovered more than 200 bodies in a town outside Damascus, apparently killed “execution-style” by the government, according to Reuters.

Reuters relates:

Abu Kinan, an activist in Daraya, said most of the victims were found in houses and basements of buildings and had been shot by troops conducting house-to-house raids.

Due to restrictions on non-state media, it was impossible to independently verify the accounts.

“In the last hour, 122 bodies were discovered and it appears that two dozen died from sniper fire and the rest were summarily executed by gunshots from close range,” Kinan said.

“Assad’s army has committed a massacre in Daraya.”

The Daraya Coordination Committee activists’ group said in a statement that among those found with shots to the head were eight members of the al-Qassaa family: three children, their father and mother and three other relatives.

Their bodies were found in a residential building near Mussab bin Umeir mosque in Daraya, the group said.

Video released by activists showed numerous bodies of young men side-by-side at the Abu Suleiman al-Darani mosque in Daraya, many with what looked like gunshot wounds to the head and chest. [Emphasis added]

The New York Times is reporting the number to be closer to 40 or 50, while al-Arabiya puts it at closer to 300.

Al-Arabiya adds:

The fresh violence erupted a day after new international envoy Lakhdar Brahimi admitted he was “scared” of the enormity of the task he faces to try to end the increasingly ferocious conflict, now in its 18th month.

Brahimi, who takes over from former U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan next month, held talks with U.N. leaders in New York on Friday, saying the Syrian people “will be our first masters.”

Annan, a former U.N. chief, quit earlier this month after the failure of his six-point plan to try to bring peace, which was left in tatters by the relentless bloodshed and divisions among world powers over how to tackle the conflict.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama have left the possibility of military intervention on the table, particularly if Syria will become a trafficking site for chemical weapons.

“We have communicated in no uncertain terms with every player in the region, that that’s a red line for us, and that there would be enormous consequences if we start seeing movement on the chemical weapons front, or the use of chemical weapons,” Obama said. “That would change my calculations significantly.”

    The fact that Assad has not been publicly dragged through the streets of Syria by the rebels by now seems like a sad failure of US intelligence and political will. Try catching up for gods sake, or at least alert the vigilant among the US populace concerning effective guerilla tactics against our enemies, no matter who they are, including the reds and the yellows. No other nation on earth has more citizens ready to kill and be killed for a good cause such as freedom, so, any excuse is on you. If we are vulnerable or behind, then plenty of American men are ready to fight……..so f*&^ing try and communicate.

      Oh, most Syrian Muslims are hoping for democracy, Syria is more civilized by geography than say Egypt. A woman wouldn’t be publicly molested by mobs in Syria like in Egypt.

      But yes, Al-Qaeda and the Saudi financed Salafists (same thing really), are the shock troops as they were in Afghanistan and Chechnya. Thousands of well trained, state of the art armed, and willing do die without hesitation fanatical fighters leading the fight. And every day that goes by, they have more influence. After all, anyone being genocidally exterminated will feel some loyalty to those that fight by their side.

A few weeks ago, I came across a WND Article stating Iran has admitted giving WMD’s to terrorist groups! Iran stated they’ll go after Europe and American Interests overseas first! Keep in mind Iran is tied into both Hamas and Hezbollah both known for Terrorism, and both have groups within the US! Did ya get the Part about, Both have Groups within the US? Yep, don’t forget with our porous borders how easy it is for terrorists to get across our Southern Border! What could go wrong with this? Nothing right? Like the chemical weapons of mass destruction in Iraq that were never discovered. How will we truly know that chemical weapons are flowing thru there when they have never been mentioned before as being a problem with Syria? As awful as this civil war is, why are we so bent on getting involved at this point, won’t it only empower the Muslim Brotherhood in their quest for the caliphate? Not something I want to side with!

      Never said WMD were a myth, but this was the premises for the Iraqi war and now sounds like that will be the trigger point for the US to go into Syria. I’m all for securing WMDs, but only if we truly know their location and can truly secure said weapons. Until then, I personally am not convinced that we should be sending in our military to side with anyone in this convoluted mess not knowing exactly whom we may be empowering that will only hold a larger threat the the western world.

      Alawites aren’t even remotely Muslim. They aren’t even monotheistic. For most of the last 1300 years it was open season on them to Sunni and Shiite Muslims. It‘s just that Iran finds it in it’s interest to pretend they are Shiite, so some Lebanese cleric a couple decades ago delcared them Shiite.

      But they never honor any Muslim rituals whatsoever. No bowing, no haj, no Koran, no Mosque, and are far more Christian than Muslim and honor Christmas, John the Baptist, Mary Magdela, etc.

      And of course, the Christians are on their side and between the two of them , it’s about 25% of the Syrian People.

It’s a little known fact that he took credit for Hussein getting elected, said he did it because he’s Muslim.       @Passerbye It seems you don’t understand the Muslim “Soul”, yes, Gaddafi was a friend of Farakan and Wright; yes, Obama admired him; yes, Gaddafi praised Obama, BUT loyalty DOES NOT exist among Muslims. Just check how they kill each other. Obama and the Muslim Brotherhood operatives in the While House, Huma Abedin, et al. are the ones who planned and executed this carnage Arab Spring, they want to destroy Israel and America.       Yeah, tough call. We’re supporting Al-Qaeda, the Muslim Brotherhood, and the Saudis and t4heir Salafists, (who are the same as Al-Qaeda except they don’t attack the Saudis or the US…yet.)

      And against the Iranians, Hezbollah, the more Christian than Muslim Alawites and unfortunately, the Christians, who along with the Alawites think they are about to be exterminated.

    This is not about evil Assad vs freedom-loving people. This is evil Assad vs evil jihadis who want more sharia, just like the rest of the “Arab Spring”.

    It’s damn awful for the Syrian Christians though, like in Egypt.

    It shows again that islam is a cancer. Kemal Atatürk was right when he referred to islam being “a rotten corpse that is poisoning our lives”.

      Yes, but it‘s still sad when you see the pictures of the children that haven’t done anything to anyone. It’s also disheartening when CFR members are cheering terrorists blowing up police stations in the country. It would be nice if we could isolate all the blood thirsty animals and let them sort out their differences without the loss of innocent life. Strategically, you’re right, but war is nothing to celebrate. Besides, we don’t really know who the rebels are. I’ve heard Al Queda and the Muslim Brotherhood were involved. I’m thinking a secular Assad would be better than the alternative.

    The New York Times is reporting the number to be closer to 40 or 50, while al-Arabiya puts it at closer to 300.

    Well let’s all just believe the New York Times.
    They would know.

    So how many of these ‘activist’ make a discovery that they claim is made by Assads forces; while in reality the ‘activists’ such as the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood and Al Queda of Syria may be the real ones behind it?

      Snow, isn’t this CHANGE? That is what he promised, change, and everyone HOPED for Change. Now the have “Change”. Obama never told us what change meant.

      It’s like, me coming in and saying “I’m going to change your life” most people would say OH Yeah, man this is going to be great. Then I burn your house down and cut off your right leg. Your life is definitely changed now, but it may have not been the change you were hoping for.

      @Darmok:

      I appreciate the sardonic humor; its just that I do see a regional war coming, under the hand of Obama and one that all too easily can escalate into full nuclear war.

      Many of the sites I deal with on the matter of Syria have all too many idiots (yes that is the proper term in their case) who refuse to debate or consider one matter; if Assad uses WMD’s on his own people, and if we go in with troops, what will stop him from doing the same to us?

      I know many will say, “We have nukes” but if a dictator is in a corner and about to go down; why do people honestly think he will not do the same and take as many of us as possible?

      So true. That is what we were afraid of going into Iraq, luckily, Hussein was either afraid, or his Generals wouldn’t follow his orders. We know he had Chemical weapons, he just didn’t use them. And I suspect, that is where Assad got his from, the CIA did monitor a massive amounts of trucks moving from Iraq into Syria as soon as we invaded.

      Yep, Snow is right.

      The Alawites think that if they lose, they will be exterminated, and they are probably right too. No chance on earth they will give up those WMD, including, they repeatedly point out, Bioweapons.

      The only thing preventing them crossing our borders is the Alawite Syrians guarding them. Not like crossing the Mexical border offers a lot of technical challenges.
