Tajikistan Gov’t Plans to Ban Child Participation in Church, Religious Activities

In Tajikistan, religious freedom is becoming a phenomenon of the past. Last month, the central Asian country’s lower house in parliament almost unanimously passed a restrictive anti-faith bill. The proposal, which is likely to become law, will prevent parents from allowing their children and teens to attend church or participate in religious activities. The stated governmental goal? To protect the nation’s children from becoming radicalized.
The most recent measure is the latest effort to prevent fundamentalism from spreading. The restrictive bill does make minor concessions for funeral processions and religious education, though it appears to be an overt attempt at removing God from the public square. The Guardian has more:
Tajikistan is the smallest, poorest country in central Asia. When the Soviet Union broke up it was engulfed in a vicious civil war for years; the economy now depends on a mixture of remittances and aluminium mining. But it is a world leader when it comes to ensuring that religion remains a purely private matter.
…the present law says… “parents are obliged … not to let children [or] teenagers participate in the activity of religious organisations, with the exception of those officially enrolled in religious education (excluding funerals and mourning events)”. So Tajik children may now legally attend granny’s funeral, despite the danger of catching religion there.
Parents will be held legally responsible if children are found violating these parameters. Reaction to the proposed bill has been strong. According to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, prominent Tajik religious leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Hoji Akbar Turajonzoda is less than pleased with its provisions. He claims that the bill is “openly against the will of God.”
Yesterday, the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom issued a press release, saying:
The Tajik president initiated the draft Parental Responsibility Law in April, now under consideration by parliament. Several provisions of the draft Parental Responsibility Law violate the Tajik Constitution and international human rights standards. Article 8 obliges parents not to allow their children to take part in any organized religious activities except funerals. The draft law…imposes new restrictions, including on religious education and dress…
The lower house of parliament also passed on June 15 new Criminal Code amendments that punish those who organize unapproved religious meetings of any religious denomination and impose harsh prison terms for undefined “religious extremist” teaching.
Below, watch a report that discusses a move made earlier this year by Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon. The president asked students studying in foreign nations abroad to return home, as he believed that they were at risk for radicalization (though some of them have publicly disagreed with his assessment):
It is understandable that the Tajik government would want to stop Islamic radicals from infiltrating its ranks, but legally preventing children from engaging in religious activities is a move that most view as morally and legislatively wrong-headed.

Posted on June 29, 2011 at 5:08amI totally understand what the President of Tajikistan is trying to do and to some extent agree with him. He is watching Hamas, Hezbollah, the Saudis, and other groups around the world train young children to become jihadists and is concerned for them. Radicalization of the youth is a genuine threat for his country and administration.
Please see this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0RSZm29-Qs. It is about a Muslim man who was trained to be a jihadist and martyr since the age of 7 and how he came to America to conduct “cultural jihad”. His story about how he later became a Christian is absolutely remarkable and inspiring.

Posted on June 28, 2011 at 4:02pmIf I understood all of the information correctly the Tajik government, which is predominantly of the Islamic faith, is attempting to stop the radicalization of young muslims. The modivation is apparently to stop future confrontations with home grown islamic terrorists. I agree that no government should be allowed to pass such edicts but none of use have any say in what goes on in someone elses country. However, it does seem to illustrate very clearly that the Tajik government is fully aware of why there is so much unrest and violence in the middle eastern countries, and they are trying to nip it in the bud in Tajikastan.
I only hope, and pray, that every American who is outgaged by this ban in Tajikastan will stand for the U.S. Constitution and fight tyranny everytime it is attempted here. Unfortunately I have seen little evidence of righteous outrage towards any number of usurpations of our God Given Rights!

Tajikistan is a troubled country with many jobless and even rolling blackouts because they don’t have enough electricity. With those problems being a breeding ground for “revolution” in the Middle East, I admire their president trying to get in front of this before it comes to Central Asia.

Posted on June 28, 2011 at 3:47pmTo the Guardian writers, in what sense is Tajikistan “ensuring that religion remains a purely private matter”? It seems that the opposite is true when the state intrudes into who can worship and who cannot as a matter of public policy. Religion is private only when the state stays out of it entirely!
The Guardian should read the first amendment to our American Constitution. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion … or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Clearly, Tajikistan is exercising a prohibition of the first order.
Or is religious freedom one of those freedoms that are not allowed if leftists like those at the Guardian think they are too troublesome to support? Liberals, it is a dangerous game you are playing, a dangerous one indeed.

Posted on June 28, 2011 at 3:43pmJust before I came here, I was reading about this guy, Charles C. Haynes, Director of the Religious Freedom Education Project at Newseum in Wash., D.C. who was criticizing our Gov. Perry’s (TX) Prayer and Fasting rally in August — it’s a “non-denominational, apolitical, Christian prayer meeting funded by the AFA. It’s perfectly constitutional but he says “even if it is….what message does he send to the millions of Americans of other faiths…when, as Gov., he initiates, leads a Christian prayer rally for “national unity”? It raises questions about how much minority religions can rely on him to protect their rights and treat their beliefs w/fairness and respect…this mixture of religion & politics is a recipe for conflict & division. That’s why Jefferson insisted on separating church from state…” Sheesh !!! I looked this guy up & he’s also spoken out against the Tea Party and calls them all Islamaphobic & Muslims/mosques pose no threats AT ALL & anti-Sharia laws would be unconstitutional. Bases lots on erroneous court decisions. You get my drift? So…another agency to watch in D.C. – this one. Then I come here & this title reminds me of what we are probably headed for – the Proglibs would love if this evil agenda isn’t stopped now.

I didn’t say mosques were banned. The article states that Tajik children are not to be indoctrinated into any religion (including Islam.) Their intention is to curb militantism.
Perhaps, you are not familiar with rhetorical extrapolation of previously stated ideas and drawing parallels to actual events. For instance and to clarify, many here at the Blaze wish Islam to be banned in the United States. Tajikistan, has essentially, done this in regards to its children. Why aren’t you applauding this? Because it also effects the Tajik Christian minority? Ah!
I think it is morally wrong to ban any thought (even “incorrect” thoughts.) It is the very definition of totalitarianism. What Tajikistan has done with this wrong-headed legislation is the goal of every right-wing Christian Conservitive Nutcake in the States. And now you see what it looks like and how easily it can be used against YOU!! So take caution in what you wish for. You just might get it—————————-
