Take a Look at the Swirling Rock Formation That Only 20 People Get to See Each Day

The Coyote Buttes in Arizona is one of the most exclusive parks in the country — only 20 permits are given by the government for visitors each day.

The Arizona Bureau of Land Management states the limited number of park goers is to ensure protection of the geologic formations that span the 112,500 acres of land. Business Insider reports that 10 of the permits are issued through an online lottery four months in advance and 10 are given out onsite that day. Zion National Park’s website states that it may seem “harsh” to institute such restrictions, “if more were to visit, the pristine, remote experience would be lost.”

Some are willing to put in the time to obtain one of these permits to see what the BLM describes as “stunning, colorful, swirling masses of stone.” Business Insider recently had a visitor share stunning images from their their 2010 visit to the Coyote Buttes. Here are just a few from Al Laurente who told Business Insider the trip was to “the most beautiful and spectacular place on earth.”

This is deformed or metamorphosed sandstone. The rock is quite durable. If it was burried and full of oil, Obama wouldn’t let us drill in it either. Yes the rock is beautiful. It was deposited horizontally and then likely reshaped by tectonic uplift. Our beautiful country is also being reshaped by the communist uplift of Obama and company. I truly hope that the USA will still be beautiful after all of the contortions of this presidency. Let us hope that America proves as durable.

What a misinformed reporter. This location, more commonly known as “The Wave” which is the name of a particular section of the formation, is in the Paria Canyon/Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness area managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. It is NOT a park. The reason access is limited and on a lottery basis is because it is an extremely fragile formation of petrified sand dunes. Excessive trampling will erode the formation. Also, the surrounding desert is covered with delicate cyano-bacteria based cryptobiotic crust which prevents erosion and provides soil for desert plants to anchor themselves. Once damaged by footfall it takes decades to re-grow. This is one of the world’s greatest natural wonders and deserves to be protected for future generations. This is not a case of overreach by the federal government. If you don’t believe me read about the damming of the Tuolumne river in the Hetch Hetchy valley of Yosemite or the destruction of one of the largest and most beautiful canyons in the southwest that contain a wealth of Indian rock art and ancient cliff dwellings, Glen Canyon. All this is now under water.

I think the state of AZ should control it, not the feds. Why does the federal government have so much land anyway? The western states don’t have any control over a very large amount of the land that is within their borders. I call that overreach.

I was wondering about reporting it to be in Zion National Park (which is in Utah), but reporting this to be in Arizona. I’ve heard about the bacteria that forms the crust of the soil; I’m not convinced yet that it needs federal protection. As for Glen Canyon– I’m grateful for Lake Powell that brings water (life) to the environment of the desert, mitigates floods, provides water for inhabitants of Utah and Arizona, supports the non-native and native animals of the area, and provides electricity in a very clean manner. Natural dams have also created similar lakes in recent geological history. Yes, it isn‘t ’natural’, as in, built by God himself, but neither is the house I live in, nor the farms where my food comes from. I’d support another dam upstream of Lake Powell.

You are right, unfortunately everyone, even, and sometimes especially people on the Blaze, who should be the most politically educated, instead make the cardinal mistake of seeing the world through partisan shaped glasses. Just because Liberals are more vocal about their support for the environment does not mean that every environmental policy is a bad one.

Anyway, I doubt much more than 20 people a day apply to visit this place to begin with. Its not like its in the most accessible of locations or like its all that well known outside of certain adventurous circles.

We have eyewitness accounts of the flood written in Genesis (and also ancient text on every continent record a recent flood event.
On the other side, evolution has no repeatable scientific method that can remotelly prove any part of the evolution myth. Dating methods produce dates that vary by millions of years and the scientists choose the results they prefer, and these same dating methods are full of assumtions and variables. there is no reliable way to date something at millions of years and certainly no way to confirm the variables ( how much starting material was there, was the rate of decay remain the same or change durring the eras, did any catastrophy or events affect the measurements for these times? There is no way to know and no-one was there to observe the experiment when it began or when it was going on for most of this supposed history. If you wanna believe you evolved from a rock go ahead, sounds like crap to me. If you disagree post your evidence (without these variables i mentioned).

Really cool. I wonder, though, these formations are made of ROCK, and they have probably been around for millions of years, therefore, how fragile is it really??? A few years ago I went to the Painted Desert, and they said the same thing, that it was so FRAGILE, but they had a boardwalk where people walked, and they told you not to leave the boardwalk. Why can’t they do the same thing here? This way, many more people could see it.

Actually, they’re about 5000 years old.
The sediment settled during The Flood, with the cut-outs during the receding of the water after.
Isn’t it wonderful how God left these beautiful traces of history behind for us.

Vandalism is probably the best excuse for limiting access.
People will try to take pieces home with them.
The fragility is relavent to the composition of the rock.
Most sedimentary rock is hard, however sandstone is naturally more fragile, but not so much to fall apart like a pile of sand. Sraping would wear it away, and leave you with the sandy dust.

      What a Marvel!

I hope your not one of those nuts that believe the evolution myth of “rocks + time = man.” B.T.W. there are no eyewitnesses to pagan evolution story, nor any evidence. This formation would obviously not have lasted millions of years, although if it were formed 4500 years ago at the flood, it would match the fact we see it today.

@TIGRESS1 – to answer your question since you post got hijacked by trolls… Its not the sandstone in those pictures that are really fragile… although one vandal could carve their name in it with any rock they pick up. The most fragile parts are ‘fins’ of stone which protrude out and are very thin and wide (which is more rare in sandstone). You could easily break a fin just by touching it.

@PAPAPATRIARCH, Dude, you need to stop with “it’s the flood from 5,000 years ago” rant. Science gets things wrong many times; however, it also explains the “How?” part of the question asked by readers of the Bible. Why not consider an “evolution guided by a divine hand” theory? Personally, I think humans and primates share a common ancestor. As for these formations, how do you explain the Grand Canyon? The Precambrian rock down there is over 2 million years old.

      @v15 ty for the question.
Evolutionist feel the grand canyon was created with a little water over a long period of time, a creationist believes it was made with a lot of water over a small amount of time. The global flood laid down mud and volcanic sediments all over the earth, they sat there for a year, then drained, and drained. Each proccess left it‘s mark scientifically the Grand Canyon is a place it’s easy to see all the layers laid down and hardened, the were ripped new channels and ravines in it as it all drained, or pocket ponds and lakes drained independantly over time making new layered cuts in the fresh sediment layers. Simalar formations are found in other parts of earth when large damns break.

@V15 – You can call me whatever you like. You’ve been told the truth, now it’s up to you what you do with it. BTW were only in the 7th 1000 year period now. Scientists get it wrong when they try to force the truth they find into their belief system. Remember the e-m’s re: global warming – they wanted so bad for everyone to believe them. Not saying it’s not warming, but things will get much more ‘turbulent’ as we approach the Return. If one chooses to believe the Bible, where do you start? In the middle? How about, a light and dark cycle=one day? Because I choose to believe HIM.
@PaPa – thanks, you wrote what all should see. Mt St. Helens took how long? Not to mention the heights of the land at each end of the Grand Canyon. (Or maybe water can run uphill for thousands/millions of years.)
@Sputnik – You make a great point as well, which is what I was stating. The question was on durability was it not?
@ Everyone – Maybe you’d like to feud as to how many millions ago it was and what you want to name your period, and cite your facts. We could use some laughs, too.

Do you think for a second that a Marine and Oath Keeper who swore an oath to defend the Constitution would ever vote for Romney or Obama? I’m sick of people like you trashing the Ron Paul supporters and likening us to big union thugs. The reality of the situation is that people like you are the ones destroying this nation with your party line politics with 2 choices that are as separate and original in scope as Coke is from Pepsi. You want a republican president just so that you can feel like you own something for a while and your vote counted. Well, I’ve got news for you. If Romney wins, you will own something, and it will be the downfall of this once great nation.

HUEY: “so who benefits from Paul?”

The constitution and the American people benefit from a Ron Paul victory. He’s the only non-liberal in the race, and therefore gets my vote!!

      Ron Paul 2012!

SGT: I am sorry that I have offended you. Please support Johnson. Do not enable the anarchists, who are being baited to cause trouble at the convention, to dilute the Republican fight against Obama who MUST be defeated . His Marxism would be disastrous. Have no trouble pressuring Romney to remain conservative in finacial matters. Also in working to elect conservative congressmen . BUT Ron Paul has no chance of winning the presidency and beating Obama. Think Romney does.

@SGTB, Marine, you just made my night. If you’re on FB, check out Veterans for Ron Paul, if you haven’t already. There are lots of like-minded folks there. They’re trying to organize a division to march in support of Paul in Tampa. Try to make it if you can. I’m tired of yellow sticker buying “support the troops” folks ignoring what we’re saying. I mean, what are we supposed to do, ignore the oath we took like the politicians they support because they’re comfortable?

This is the plan for the elitist, theyre doing this in the national parks all over this country restricting access by foot or horse, soon only the very elite will ever be able to see these wonders, and it will be a $10,000.00 plate event. to keep the rif raf like you and me out of Barbara Streisamduydgd (however the slut spells her name) eyesite.

Design implies a designer…. an ordered universe and laws implies one who ordered it and created the laws and keeps them…
Did you read the part about it being fragile? It would not have lasted the supposed millions of years of evolution.
