Did You Know There‘s a Secret ’Avengers’ Post-Credits Sequence? Here‘s What It’s All About

Warning: This article contains spoilers for “The Avengers.” Those who haven‘t seen it and don’t want to be spoiled are advised to steer clear. Here’s a picture of the Hulk to dissuade you from reading on and keep you from being accidentally spoiled:

HULK SMASH PUNY SPOILER
Have all the non-watchers gone? Alright.
So if you‘ve seen Marvel’s “The Avengers,” you know that it is awesome. You also may recall, if your ears weren’t ringing from the explosions too much to hear, that after the climactic battle against the Chitauri/Skrulls in New York City, Iron Man (played by Robert Downey, Jr) suggests that the Avengers all go for some shawarma as a post-world saving treat.

Breakfast of Earth's Champions
And, if you were smart enough to stick around through all the credits (and if you weren’t, shame on you, go watch the movie again), you might also remember that we actually get to see the Avengers doing precisely that – munching on falafel like tired coworkers, as no one says a word, before the screen cuts to a final black.
Well, as it turns out, that scene was meant to be a big secret that no one was expecting — that is, until Robert Downey, Jr spoiled it by mentioning the scene in an April 12 Press Conference, leading to a media feeding frenzy. In fact, according to CNN, the media reaction was something like this scene from the movie, where Downey’s Iron Man is being pursued by a massive, implacable alien force:

STOP FOLLOWING ME, I SAID NO COMMENT!
And now, CNN gives us an exclusive sneak peak into how the rest of the cast, as well as director Joss Whedon, reacted to Downey’s screw-up. Their whole article on the end sequence is worth reading, but here’s a quick snippet for the fanboys in the audience:
Whedon, who has been silent this whole time (making ixnay eyes because THERE’S AN EW REPORTER SITTING RIGHT THERE) finally gives up, and tells Downey: “Thank you for having every reporter ask me what we were shooting.”
“You’re welcome,” Downey says, unapologetic about revealing plans for the scene at a press conference the afternoon before.
Whedon was exaggerating, of course. Not every reporter had asked that question … yet.
“So what were you shooting today?” your friendly neighborhood EW reporter inquires.
Whedon squints his eyes, like Mr. Peabody when he’s fed up with Sherman.
Downey opens his arms. “Carnival barker!” he declares. “Last night, I just wanted to make sure the excitement was there.”
Whedon breaks into an impression of what he’s been dealing with all day: “‘So I hear you’re shooting a scene?’” he says in the voice of a curious reporter. Leaning back and twiddling his thumbs, the filmmaker offers his fake-smiley response: “‘I’m sure I don’t know what you mean!’”
Nice to get a look at the human beings behind the superheroes now and again. We now return you to your regularly scheduled hard news.

I am not an Ayn Rand fan and I don’t understand the great attraction some conservatives have for her writings. I read The Fountainhead and disliked many of her ideas, including her idea that “the proper moral purpose of one‘s life is the pursuit of one’s own happiness (or rational self-interest)”. I don’t think Jesus teaches this. I think she operated outside of bibilical morality.

Posted on May 9, 2012 at 4:15pm@DEEBERJ – Your statement is only true if you consider living by the tenets of Christianity outside of the pursuit of one’s own happiness. Otherwise, there is no conflict. They are not mutually exclusive. In fact the statement means that if living by the tenets of Christianity is necessary for your happiness then you have a moral obligation to pursue your life in that manner.
Report Post »NE1
Posted on May 10, 2012 at 2:15amTHX1138V2 Your argument doesn’t hold water. The tenets of Christianity are mandates by God for everyone, not suggestions for those who would be happy following them. Those who do not follow Christ and hold to biblical truth are in fact denying the bible and God himself! If pursuing one’s own happiness is a “moral obligation” what happens when my pursuit and your pursuit are in conflict? Who wins? We are back to “might makes right!”

Posted on May 8, 2012 at 10:21pmMarvel films almost always have an “Easter Egg” at the end. Usually, it’s a promo for an soon-to-be-up-coming film. Avengers actually had that (although I suspect it’s a promo for Avengers 2, rather than thinking we’ll see “he who courts death” in Iron Man 3 or whatever.)

Posted on May 8, 2012 at 8:05pmThe movie reinforces two points I learned from Dr. Larry Arnn, President of Hillsdale College regarding TWO MAIN THINGS Hillsdale teaches its students….
And these are the same TWO MAIN THINGS hated, despised, loathed, etc. by public school education systems, university professors, school unions, the Democrat Machine, the main-stream media, the L.A. Times, all Political Correct Dominators, in other words… the CREEPS that have taken America down…. (oh yes, Extreme Muslims hate these two main things also..)
• There is One God above us all, well described by Jewish/Christian tradition… (men ain’t angels!)
• There is One Universal Philosophy applicable to all, Western Civil Society protocols of correction.
When Demi-God from another planet tells Captain America he is a god, Captain America says, “There’s only one God… and he doesn’t dress like you!” (or words to that effect)
When Demi-Gods on another planet talk about the butt-whipping they just got, one of them says, “To try to subjugate these humans is to court death!”
As a side note, crazy, lazy, uncorrectable Churchianity, wherein pastors use NLP Shenanigans to a) stage hypnotize, b) use showmanship, c) misdirection and d) suggestion (tithe to them? as they make sheep blinder and blinder and more easy to con unto socialistic slavery… will be one day FIXED by Western protocols correcting these leaders-who-are-not-angels.
Avengers has a good lesson for all tyrants…

Posted on May 8, 2012 at 9:03pmI fear that a large a swath of not only the last bastion of liberty on the planet ,the United States of America but of the peoples of the world are all too ready to subjugate themselves for a“ few pieces of silver”. Perhaps one more shot here to turn this around. I once thought that Bible prophecy couldn’t take place in my lifetime or really take place at all , I’m rethinking my world view. How easily people are manipulated, right is wrong, good is bad, black & white is now gray, our enemies control our thoughts & tongues, immorality is the law and good people are mocked.

Posted on May 9, 2012 at 2:33amFunny that Joss Whedon is athiest
Report Post »In That Day
Posted on May 9, 2012 at 11:27amDecroded,
True enough! But Whedon made the Firefly/Serenity stories… which also had Christian/Redemption themes… sort of like the Sarah Connor Chronicles wherein one of the Jewish screenwriters said his dad asked why did his Jewish son keep writing so much Christianity into the story line, and the son said he didn’t really know why, but the story kept coming out that way.
In Firefly/Serenity Captain Mal Reynolds fights against an oppressive Alliance Government that basically hates two things:
• One God Above us all (as described by Jewish/Christian traditions) that says we aren’t angels…
• One Universal Philosophy applicable to us all (as described by the Way of the Western Society…
The well-meaning but end-result-is-evil Alliance government mind-rapes children’s brains (they haven’t the right) , because they can, and tries to change the air on a planet so all aggression is removed. The result (plot spoiler) is that people just sit there and die… or become rapacious outlaws of violence.
If Hollywood is so bad (as dumbed-down Christians are taught by Mandarin pastors trying to hold on to small thought-control and rigid-rule overlording control)… then why do so many movies from Hollywood show us the real enemy?
The real enemy, like the L.A. Times, the media, public education… hates
• One God above all
• One Universal Philosophy (Western) applies to all
Black liberation theo. also hates the above…

Report Post »In That Day
Posted on May 9, 2012 at 1:11pmYou know, Steve…
If the Avengers movie is based upon the idea that…
• There is One God above us all … and
• There is One Universal Philosophy applicable to all (From the West, not north, south or east)
Then that would explain why Captain America’s uniform, why the Avengers are, and the movie represents American exceptionalism at its best, an exceptionalism that defends itself against foolish half-gods who attack American liberty and thus “court death.”
Basically we are now fighting (overmuch-law-making) socialistic-propagandistic-progressive-OVERLORDS on one hand, and with the other hand we are fighting (pirate-lawless) barbaric-recidivistic-muslim-extreme-jihardists. Their rear ends will receive a well-deserved boot-kicking because a Free and Liberty-Loving Citizenry is the second-most ruthless thing in the universe (next to God Himself) when it comes to defending good minds from being raped (by evil-education progressivism, via university & public school) or our children from being literally raped (because extreme muslims rape both girls and boys.. as our war-fighters learned in Afghanistan.. after killing jihadists, their boy-slaves were left behind after their sex-masters died.)
America’s red, white and blue colors of old glory, and those who wear these colors in times of testing, are simply and always… prophetic, patriotic, conservative, and true.
But the LA/NY Times hates one God, one Western Philosophy…
