Taking the ‘Southern’ Out of Southern Baptist? Panel Recommends More Inclusive-Sounding Name

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (The Blaze/AP) — A panel for the Southern Baptist Convention recommended Monday that its leadership approve a new, add-on description for the denomination — “Great Commission Baptists” — but stopped short of a complete, legal name change.
Officials described the new term as a way to give an official, sanctioned identity to affiliated churches and believers who don’t want to use the term “Southern.”
The Rev. Bryant Wright, president of the nation’s largest Protestant denomination, has said he is concerned that the “Southern” name is too regional and hinders the evangelistic faith’s effort to expand beyond the South.
The panel rejected a complete name change, citing the legal costs and difficulties. They also noted the positive associations many hold with the Southern Baptist name, such as with its well-regarded disaster relief organization.
A recent survey conducted by the SBC’s own Lifeway Research firm gives weight to the idea that the name does drive away some potential members.
Of the 2,000 Americans surveyed, 40 percent of respondents had an unfavorable view of the denomination and 44 percent of respondents said that knowing a church was Southern Baptist would negatively impact their decision to visit or join the church.
Although 53 percent of respondents overall had a favorable view of the Southern Baptists, the high negatives are a concern for a denomination in which spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ is a fundamental to their faith.
While the 16 million member denomination continues to plant new churches in the U.S. and around the world, it has seen a decline in baptisms, church attendance and membership in recent years.

Posted on February 21, 2012 at 10:58amI agree with smithclar. If it is a christian church with christian beliefs that follows Christ and the scriptures, why is it the baptist church? Jesus said If it be my church it will have my name. So do the southern baptists follow John the Baptist? I honestly don’t know so I am asking. I can ask the same thing of catholics, episcapalians (sp), protestants, evangelicals, on and on.

Report Post »AND…. the SBC is NOT a Protestant denomination. History tells us that there have always been Christian groups operating outside the Catholic Church, therefore they have not PROTESTED anything.
How do I know this?
@leftfighter
Posted on February 21, 2012 at 8:14amActually, I’m a member of an SBC church, and yes, we’re Protestant. You have to understand that the term Protestant is in relation to our worship versus the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches, with which the vast majority of us disagree. Even the Anglicans and Lutherans, the two most Catholic of the Protestant churches, are still Protestant.
It’s important to note the difference between doctrine (where we disagree) and tenets of the faith (where we agree). Differences in doctrine can be argued and debated, tenets cannot.
This is why we view the Lutherans, Catholics, Episcopalians, Presbyterians, etc. as denominations and totally differently from LDS, Christian Science, Jehovah’s Witnesses, etc., whom we consider cults.

Posted on February 21, 2012 at 10:43am@LEFTFIGHTER – As you know, I’m a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its sad that you feel inclined to constantly defame my religious beliefs. I didn’t know that you were a Southern Baptist; but that is interesting. However, hopefully it will help you feel less hostile towards my religion if you know that I completely respect your religion.
I now live out west where there seem to be less SB, but prior to that I lived in Florida while attending law school and met many SB. I think your church produces some GREAT PEOPLE! I was close friends with many of your faith. They all respected my religious beliefs as well and never claimed that I was a member of a ‘cult’. We worked together as fellow Christians and often had our families gather together for activities. I truly respect the Southern Baptists for their efforts to share what they believe is true… just like my friends respected me for my efforts to share what I believe is true. I never heard them speak of my religion the way you do.
Are your ill feelings towards my religion your personal beliefs or are they shared by all members of your faith? I’m inclined to believe that they are your personal beliefs since my Southern Baptist friends seemed to respect my religious beliefs as I respected theirs.
Again, I’m sorry that you feel such hostility towards the religion that I love (as evidenced in your past posts), but I still respect yours – and will never bash your personal beliefs.

Is that really what the SBC is teaching?
“Protestant” is a Catholic term used in relation to denominations that were spawned by the Reformation. Baptists are NOT part of the reformation, its beliefs predate the reformation. If anything, the term applies to the Catholic church, as well its progeny, – as THEY protested Biblical faith first. Catholics apply the term to Baptists in attempt to erase any notion that a faith existed before theirs.
The myth is that Baptists are an extension of Presbyterian belief, Calvinists – this is simply not true. Calvin was influenced by the “Anabaptists” that existed prior to his reformation movement – and before. Calvin took what truth was convienient and infused it into a hierarchy of secular control.
I implore you to study this for yourself. You may even prefer Calvinism over your current SBC affiliation. If so, please become a Presbyterian. If not, please dedicate yourself to studying the real history of the Baptist belief.

Report Post »Well Bryant, when you don’t offer baptism every week, it hinders a person considering baptism when the Spirit hits them. If you want to get baptized in your church, you have to take a course on baptism and it may be several weeks before you are actually baptized. Let them be baptized the same day the Spirit guides them to be baptized. How many people were baptized when you had the impromptu baptism a few years ago? 365 or close to that? There is no Biblical precedent that requires a class before baptism.

Posted on February 22, 2012 at 3:22pmI have some questions for the Mormon Blazers. Please don’t get defensive. These are sincere questions. As you know, most Christians do not accept moromons as fellow christians, rather they view the denominationas a fringe group, sect, or cult, for various reasone.
What is the OFFICAL attitude of the LDS denomination towards other denominations. Do LDS members feel that other denominations are as “legitimate” (for want of a better word) as their denomination is? Or do they look at other denominations as “defective” (again, for lack of a better word) . Can LDS members freely attend others worship services without being considerred “weak” or “disobedient” by their leaders and other members?
I attend a denominational church. We accept other denominations who are doctrinally part of Christ’s one, holy catholic and apostic church as brothers and sisters in the Lord. We can freely attend each others services (ie. baptist, Pres., Anglican, Methodist, etc.) with no guilt trips llaid on us by our leaders. Jehovah’s Witrtnesses, who claim to be the “true” church, cannot do this. Can LDS members, who I believe stake the same claim, excercise the freedom I have in this regard?
BTW, if ione belongs to a denomination that claims to be the “true” church, it is a by its very nature a “put down” of other denominations. Why, then, would you take offense at others’ who put you down in return?
These are sincere questions. I don’t want to start an argument. Thank

No one is “born into the church.” Each Baptist church is autonomous, with no hierarchical body telling the local church how to conduct its business. Local churches themselves select their pastors and staff. Therefore, if you do not believe, do not join. Do not change the name, the name stands for the teachings of the church.
