Tampa Mother Says She Killed Her Teen Kids for Being Mouthy

Police checking on the family at the request of a relative found Julie K. Sch

enecker, 50, on the back porch of her home Friday morning, dressed in blood-covered clothing, according to a police statement.

They found her son, Beau Powers Schenecker, 13, dead in the family’s SUV, which had been parked in the garage, the statement said. Calyx Powers Schenecker, 16, was in an upstairs bedroom, also dead.

“She did tell us that they talked back, that they were mouthy,” Tampa police spokeswoman Laura McElroy told CNN affiliate WTSP.

I nominate this lady for the 2011 DARWIN AWARD
The Darwin Awards honor Charles Darwin by commemorating those who yield to natural selection and “remove” themselves from the gene pool…(usually by doing something idiotic) – thereby ensuring that the next generation is smarter by one. In her case she removed her own progeny which will have the same effect. Let‘s hope she doesn’t get another chance to reproduce.

So sad. My guess is this is some sort of impulse control disorder. Most of us today are guilty of failing to control our actions and blaming it on other or on society. But in reality we have two minds, the executive frontal lobes, and our limbic system is emotional and reacts without thinking. If we don’t train ourselves to stop and think before we do this can be the outcome… and this is the end result of needing instant gratification all the time. It takes work to be a thinking moral person. It is easy to not think, react, and lash out. She just happened to have a gun handy.

But here’s the thing. You have to be brave enough to look at your own dysfunctional stuff before you can begin thinking about it and controlling it. It is hard, hard work and not filled with the promise of any gratification much less instant gratification.

What did Glenn say? “The truth will set you free. But it will make you miserable first.” Truth is freedom from this kind of insanity. But it isn’t easy.

@ Firsthat, I thought so too.

What she did was horribly wrong. She couldn’t be in her right mind. Her own mother knew she was depressed and called on her everyday (per news reports). Why didn’t the woman seek medical help? How could she hide her deep depression? So terribly sad.

I hate kids. They are oppressive and even if a parent does everything they know the children take up with others who will teach them disrespect. Maybe they will come in wearing black clothes and black fingernails. You know the goth types. Maybe they will do drugs and in this world if you don’t get busy building up you will not survive unless you call living under a bridge surviving. Our society teaches so many awful confusing things like its OK to kill unborn children or maybe an operation can make a man into a woman like a woman is really just a man with a few extra stitches. The lunacy is maddening. I do not blame the mother. We live in an insane world and there is more of this every day.Yes she will have to pay and somehow I feel she already has. I may be all wrong but I have seen much suffering brought by just plain mean children and the stupid world they live in. Lets fix this world right here in America.

I hope that you never have children to abuse. Children are nothing like you say, unless you are a lazy rotten parent. Children that do not respect you, will indeed make your life miserable. They feed off of your inadequacy as a parent. They also inherit the sins of their parents, like alcoholism or gambling.

Children are a reflection of the parents willingness to think of, and care-for another life other than their own. Very rewarding.

You are taking the word of a deranged woman that said the reason she killed her children is that they “talked back”? She bought the gun 5 days earlier, shot her son in the car while coming home from a soccer game, then her daughter while she was doing her homework. Do they sound unruly to you? Oh, by the way, they were both excellent students with no history of “bad behavior.” The mother had just emailed her own mother about her depression a few days before… Come on, she had some issues! People on here seem to be blaming these kids who never thought their own mother would hurt them. Additionally, their poor, poor father lost both of his kids while he was serving in the middle east and is now coming home absolutely devastated. Get it together people.

Some points I would like to make.

      1. I do not believe that children are always a reflection of their parents. Perhaps it was this way years and years ago when children actually spent time at home, around their parents etc., but now a days there are more external influences than there are internal influences.
      2. A normal/healthy parent could never do this to their child. Just at the thought of losing one of my kids makes my heart ache. BUT- my husband (although not military) had to serve with an Apache unit in Iraq for a year. His company moved us to a new state (away from all of my family and friends) just weeks before he had to leave. I did okay for the first few months. But, as we were not military I did not have the support that military wives have when their husbands deploy. I became very depressed. Nothing like this woman- BUT, I had never been so depressed before and my doctor even said I was suffering from panic attacks. I can definitely see how the husband‘s absence might have played a role in this woman’s mental decline.
      3. None of us are perfect. Man, woman, or child, we all have are faults. I can not blame the kids in this. I blame the mother, father, school system, and the necessary evil of war.

      I agree with you, Tired.

Something as simple as a child saying, “But, Mom!” could be interpreted as back talk rather than clarification, such as “But, Mom, I can‘t go to Aunt Lisa’s house if I have soccer practice.”, however inappropriately it may have been expressed. We’ll never know exactly what was said, to whom and what tone was used since both kids are dead.

And I don’t blame the father, either, since he was doing his job, which happens to involve the U.S. Military. There have been hundreds of thousands of military couples in our country who have survived without killing each other or their children. That man has lost his entire family in one day.

If this was a Muslim father or brother doing an “honor Killing” — as least I could understand that. What is the breakdown in society that people don’t take responsibility for their action? Whats the matter with the mother? She has the same look in her eyes, as Wanda B., the “wife” of the guy who kidnapped Elizabeth smart. Sick.

A left wing nut has not a spot in the military because they are for everything that’s against what the U.S. military stands for.

Since you quote the bible, I’ll quote your holy book the Quran.

“Believers, make war on the infidels who dwell around you. Deal firmly with them.” (Surah 9:121-)

“Forbidden to you are…married women, except those you own as slaves.” (Surah 4:20-, 24-)

“Seek out your enemies relentlessly.” (Surah 4:103-)

All from the holy book of Islam.

But, 82nd is wrong about honor killings. Woman are killed when they are raped because of “honor” killings….same for adultery, and just recently in the US, a man killed his daughter for being too “western” – he claimed honor killing. Unfortunately, this goes on inside families and it is not reserved for outside offenders of Islam.
