Target Targeted: Store Sues Gay Rights Group for Harassing Customers

Target Targeted: Store Sues Gay Rights Group for Harassing CustomersSAN DIEGO (AP) — Target Corp. is suing a San Diego pro-gay marriage group to get it to stop canvassing outside its San Diego County stores, alleging its activists are driving away customers.

Rights advocates say the trial between Target and Canvass For A Cause that begins Friday could further strain relations with the gay and lesbian community after controversy over its $150,000 donation to a business group backing a Minnesota Republican candidate opposed to gay marriage.

Minnesota-based Target insists it remains committed to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and its lawsuit has nothing to do with the political agenda of the organization.

“Our legal action was in no way related to the cause of the organization and was done so to be consistent with our long-standing policy of providing a by not permitting solicitors at our stores,” the company said in a statement sent to The Associated Press.

Target says it has taken similar action against a number of organizations representing a variety of causes. It alleges in the lawsuit that the San Diego group‘s activists harass customers by cornering them near its stores’ front entrances and debating with them about their views on gay marriage.

The group says it canvasses at shopping malls, college campus and stores like Target to collect signatures and donations in support of gay marriage.

The corporation says at least eight Target stores in the area have reported receiving more than a dozen complaints daily since canvassers started working outside their stores in October 2010. Target says the activists have refused to leave when asked politely and shown the company’s policy prohibiting “expressive activity” on its property.

Canvass For A Cause director Tres Watson says Target wants to silence the 12,000-member group that formed in 2009 because it promotes gay marriage.

“It’s very David vs. Goliath,” he said. “We understand they’re the Goliath in the room. They’ve got all money in world to get us to stop talking about gay marriage.”

Watson says volunteers are trained daily on being professional and polite and their aim is to educate the public about the rights of gays and lesbians.

He says they have a right to work outside the stores and the courts have ruled in the past that shopping centers are today’s public squares where freedom of speech should be allowed.

“We train our staff and volunteers very carefully in techniques in winning people over,” he said. “When you’re trying to persuade voters and reach out to the community with a message, there is no advantage to being aggressive.”

Target was seen as an ally of the gay and lesbian community before it gave money to MN Forward, which supported Tom Emmer, who lost the governor’s race to Democrat Mark Dayton.

Target later said it was sorry for the hurt feelings and tried to repair its public relations damage from the controversial donation. Target created a committee to help it better scrutinize decisions regarding financial donations.

The company also negotiated a deal with Lady Gaga to sell a special edition of her upcoming album in a partnership Gaga said was tied to their “reform,“ supporting the gay community and making up for past ”mistakes.” But the singer backed out a few weeks ago.

I don’t even remotely care what a persons sexual preference is but no one has the right to keep another person out of any public place because they are targeting that place for a political purpose. Tea Party people are watched like a hawk for any perceived misdoings but have you noticed when gays have a demonstration it usually turns violent or at the very least hateful. Everyone has rights; yes even heterosexual individuals.

Like “David and Goliath”? Wow, this man really needs to read that section of the bible to understand that what brought Goliath down was David’s complete faith in God.

I have avoided shopping at Target for years over their open support of gay rights and open degradation of all things Christian… I too will be happy to join in a shopping spree at Target this weekend. I think it would behoove all who plan to do so to make sure and take a minute to alert the management of the store you visit as to the reason you are shopping there.

I think it’s time for the heterosexuals of the world to rise up and put the gays back in the closet where they belong! Why? Look at what they are doing to our children! If you want to be gay, that’s your business, but leave the children alone! It’s amazing that any government would give this perversion of nature a political voice that must be reckoned with by the average tax paying heterosexual!

Another thing. The government wants to cut budgets! Let the government cut the budget on aids medical research! It is outrageous that any government would devote so much time, energy and taxpayer money on a disease that is SELF INFLICTED by the individual! Any self inflicted illness should be automatically considered a low priority.

@NUTN2SAY ~~~ I like your moniker. And, I agree with you. We have been deceived by thinking tolerance is what JESUS would do. JESUS was never tolerant of sin, not ever.

The BIBLE tells us that homosexuality is an abomination to GOD. For those so lost in the lie that it’s ok, we must pray and pray hard. Notice that it is satan’s group who support this lifestyle. We must pray hard as time is short, that those involved in this lifestyle and confused by why they are doing what they are doing, that their eyes will be opened and they will return to the ONE TRUE GOD.

Sorry but no group has any right to sit outside a private business for any reason. They can do this IF they have permission from the private business however if they don’t it is known as TRESPASSING.

If any group were doing anything outside my business that they did not have my expressed permission to do or what they were doing was hurting my business I would first politely ask then to leave and if they refused I would simply have them arrested for trespassing as would be my right to do.

I have friends that are gay, here’s the rub though, they understand and respect my POV and I theirs and that’s the boundary, and while we may discuss issues we respect that boundary which is how civilized people are supposed to act.

You cannot rationalize with these people or any of these types of groupings thereof. There is no dealing with the devil. Anyone that knows God and His Word knows this. No one, No One, NO ONE is born a sexual deviate or with the gruesome acts they perform. I will not use the word “gay” to describe them anymore. This was hi-jacked just as they try to believe that God will not punish them, like Sodom, by defacing the rainbow.
We are spiritual beings having a flesh experience for a short time. NOT flesh beings having, or seeking, a spiritual experience. There are laws of God that cannot be broken. For example: Slaughtering your baby by sacrificing them to the god of convenience comes with a price. Women who murder their babies have a dramatic increase in breast cancer probabilities. In like manner those that have given up the natural use of their bodies have a greatly reduced lifespan.
Good for Target to not sell out to them.

Some people need to wake up and remember that Target supports gays. They made a BUSINESS decision to support the best politian their business and he just happen to be against gays. What’s going on here DOES NOT let Target off the hook for their past gay support!

Meanwhile, outrage continues to build within the gay community and within communities that support gay rights, directly challenging Target’s interpretation of its best “business interests.” Unfortunately for Target, the story is now spilling out of the state and getting national media attention.

But Target, long a supporter of gay equality in both its own organization and within Minnesota, maybe deserves a second chance.

“Guys”, we’ve been sold a bogus bill of goods on this inclusive society cr*p! We are taught in the Bible that homosexuality is an abomination to our LORD GOD. Why then, do we continue to allow this sick, perverted lifestyle a voice, a presence in our society? This behavior is NOT normal past 14 years of age. All of these people practicing it are stuck in the preadolescent- adolescent development stage where for some reason or other they were safer than venturing out into the real world.

Exactly. They‘ve laid down with these radicals and are now finding out that sleeping with them isn’t so great for their business. Target spends a LOT of money supporting these very groups. Me suspects this is all a publicity ploy to appear to be ‘pro-family’. Watch how this unfolds. They‘ll stop short of going to court and ’settle’. In the ‘settlement’ (that has probably already been written) they‘ll ’compromise’ and give this ONE group a space outside their stores. Then they’ll claim “We had to do this to settle a lawsuit” to placate the objections of the pro-family groups. But this is all just Kabuki theatre anyway. Target is (and has been for years) a pro-sodomy-lobby company. Shop there if you won’t. I choose not to. But that’s just my choice. Great thing about this country (for now) is that we’re all free to make our own choices.

The fact of the matter is no one has a right to harrass people in front of someone elses place of business it’s private property and anyone can be barred from it. There should be laws barring people from annoying customers on a business property in an attempt to damage businesses financially. Both criminal and civil legislation needs to be established.
THESE TYPES OF ACTIONS NEEDS TO PUT TO AN END.

This is all about money and Target is losing money because of protestors “solicitors” in front of their stores. $150,000 is a drop in the bucket compared to the millions given to homosexual activist groups. Left hand / Right hand.

Target has supported gay rights activities for years……the gay activists are simply using this “protest” to further remind themselves, and anyone else that will listen, that they still enjoy “victim” status……once you obtain “victim status”, you can’t let it go or let people forget…….this is why they are ever so watchful for any opportunity to get themselves into the news……I’m sure that MSNBC will be airing some “in-depth“ and ”hard-hitting” commentary on this story sometime today……

Personally, I don’t like Target and fortunately, there‘s isn’t one nearby, so I’d have to go trekking to shop there. However, I am glad that they are standing up to the pro-gay groups. I’m getting really tired of this “hurt feelings”/“offended” routine that people use to further their causes. It’s getting way out of hand.

BRAVO, Target! Go for the jugular and their pocketbooks as that will be the only thing they will understand. Just explain to them, “you are redistributing the wealth to people who actually work for a living”. Now if we can just get police departments to raise the “get out of jail” rates, police forces might not be in such a financial pinch. It is just a matter of whose wealth is being redistributed.

There should be laws that outlaw protesters from harrassing customers on a business’s property. If they want to protest target they need to do it off of target’s property. A business has the right to remove and ban people from their property who damage, steal, and cause trouble on it’s property.
There should be fine and a community service for these actions as well civil letigations for sales losses do to customer harrassment.

Yes, I’m very happy Target has taken action. I was one of the people being harrassed at my local Target store. These people are activists, plain and simple! Very “in your face”. Here is the description of their organization from Wikipedia, I know not a very good source of information. But, based on my personal experience, they are spot on. Comments in parenthesis mine.

The Canvass for a Cause (CFAC) is a California-based non-profit organization that focuses on voter persuasion (read:intimidation), and public education efforts to build support for the progressive issues.[1] Founded in the wake of the passage of Proposition 8, the California law that eliminated the right of LGBT persons to marry (original proposition was to define marriage as a union btwn one man and one woman, period.), Canvass for a Cause volunteers and activists spend time in public places advocating for or against candidates or issues that are central to the progressive movement with an emphasis on LGBT rights.[2] Their model is focused on “one heart, one mind, one person at a time” and most of the organization is devoted to persuading voters, identifying supporters, and recruiting volunteers. Canvass for a Cause has built campaigns and projects on a variety of progressive projects, including LGBT marriage equality, which the organization says is its largest project, as well as women’s rights, immigration issues, cannabis law reform, and international relief efforts. The CFAC mission statement is “to recruit and train activists to send out into the community in order to educate about progressive issues, build support for campaigns, and raise funds for the cause.”[3] The organization is funded almost entirely by face-to-face fund-raising efforts of its grassroots organizers.[4]

I worked as an assistant manager at Target for almost eight years. During that time, I watched every minority and gay assistant manager get promoted as quickly as possible, all the while awaiting my turn and practicing my conservative family-centered Christian beliefs. I eventually left the company to take a store manager role for another big box retailer, where I enjoy great success. Target was hell-bent on leaving Christ out of Christmas so as not to offend anyone, but quickly changed their tune after a massive grassroots threatened boycott. They have been so focused on catering to the “special” interests for so many years, and now it has come back to bite them on the backside! Kharma stinks…enjoy your fight Target!!!!

If your making a stand you aren’t doing the backstroke to keep the business coming. We go to target all the time maybe time for a change.

Imagine if we all let target know that we don‘t support gay marriage and we won’t shop there any more.

Good for Target. Political activism really has no place right in front of the store. Their goal is to “win people over”? How about if you want to hand out a flyer and say “we’d appreciate your support.”? That would be acceptable, but it clearly sounds like they want to force debate on the issue. This is the problem I have with some of the activists in the LGBT community, they want to ram their view in your face and force you to say why gay marriage shouldn’t be legal to engage in heated debate. I personally have no problem with it, I say leave it to the states, but I do have a problem with someone getting in my face. I feel the same way about other groups too, any activists—don’t corner me.

I would like for some gay idiots to come up to me and try to talk to me about giving them the same rights as I have as a “normal” person. I don’t even think they have the right to adopt children with their abnormal and wrong lifestyle. It would be a pleasure of mine to debate them any time about this subject. Of course, they won’t like what I have to say. A practicing gay person is wrong, it is immoral and God made sex to be between a man and a woman to bring children into the world, nothing else! If a man sleeps with a man or a woman with a woman, you are making sex perverse!

AMEN! i’ll also be shopping at TARGET much more often. our local walmart doesn’t allow soliciting outside their doors, i don’t allow it outside my door and no one should be forced to put up with that kind of harrassment. i think homosexuals should not be called “gays”. that whole business is for the sole purpose of making what they do sound innocent and innocuous which most of us know is far from the truth. their behaviour is sum total of their hypocrisy and moral fiber or lack thereof. they scream at the top of their lungs and call everyone else terrible names if they don’t agree with them but they think they can bombard us all, trample on our rights and opinions and shove their perversions down our throats. they call that their “civil rights” but there’s nothing civil about it. maybe strippers should be able to solicit in front of toys-r-us; or possibly atheist solicit in front of all the Christian book stores. i don’t think so.

We don‘t agree with the homosexual lifestyle and we’re suing you for harrassing our customers”. I mean, how hard is that?
