Taxpayer Funding of Planned Parenthood Restarts in Indiana Following Federal Judge’s Ruling

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Planned Parenthood clinics in Indiana started seeing Medicaid patients again Saturday, the day after a federal judge ruled the state couldn‘t cut off the organization’s public funding for general health services just because it also provides abortions.
Planned Parenthood spokeswoman Kate Shepherd said she didn‘t know how many Medicaid patients had visited the group’s 28 clinics since Friday night’s federal court ruling, but the clinics usually average about 80 a day.
“Saturday is one of the busier days because people don’t have to take off work, and they can get family members to watch their children,” Shepherd said.
Planned Parenthood of Indiana has been without Medicaid funding since May 10, when Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels signed the law that cut off about $1.4 million and made Indiana the first state to deny the organization Medicaid funds for services such as breast exams and Pap tests.
Planned Parenthood, which serves about 9,300 Indiana clients on the state-federal health insurance plan for low-income and disabled people, was forced to stop seeing Medicaid patients this week after private donations that had paid those patients’ bills ran out.
(See: Judge stops Ind. cuts to Planned Parenthood funds)
Shepherd said the group was trying to get the word out to Medicaid patients that they could start coming back Saturday. She said she believed some clinics with close relationships with their Medicaid patients were phoning to tell them they could return.
“They’re so very happy to be able to say to their patients, `We’d love to see you again,’” she said.
U.S. District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt‘s Friday ruling blocked parts of a tough new abortion law and granted Planned Parenthood of Indiana’s request for an injunction on the state’s move to defund the organization. The decision sides with federal officials who said states cannot restrict Medicaid recipients’ freedom to choose their health care provider or disqualify Medicaid providers merely because they also offer abortions.
Indiana attorney general’s office spokesman Bryan Corbin said the state likely will appeal.
State Sen. Scott Schneider, an Indianapolis Republican who sponsored the measure to defund Planned Parenthood, said the state should appeal.
(See: Federal judge blocks Indiana’s new immigration law)
“The whole ruling is disappointing in my opinion. In my opinion, it’s judicial activism,” he said.
Pratt’s ruling was part of a double setback for Indiana conservatives by federal judges Friday. U.S. District Judge Sarah Evans Barker granted a request for an injunction blocking two provisions of the state’s new immigration law, saying the law was the latest failed effort of states to deal with a primarily federal issue.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana and the National Immigration Law Center sued the state in May, contending the law gives police sweeping powers to arrest immigrants who haven’t committed crimes.
State Sen. Mike Delph, a Republican from Carmel who authored the immigration law, said the judges in both cases overreached.
“Collectively, what this shows is a judicial branch of government that is out of touch with the people of Indiana. It shows a liberalism that is not in sync with the wishes of the people of Indiana,” he said Saturday.

Posted on June 25, 2011 at 11:51pmOkay. Let me lay this one down. And if someone sees the dichotomy of what I write below and has an answer…please explain it to me.
If a woman stands in a picket line to “Save the Chickens!” in the morning at KFC (actually saw this one) and for the afternoon she stands holding a sign in front of a business known for being Pro-Life saying “ A Woman has a Right to Choose”. Does that mean that mean she values life? or just chickens?
And I wonder regarding the “Save the Chickens” part of it, if she is objecting to killing the chickens or how they are treated prior to their death. I wonder then, if she would have the same issue with a fetus prior to it’s death due to abortion? And then, what would she decide?

Posted on June 26, 2011 at 7:54amI got another one for you:
If a young woman stands in front of an abortion clinic several days a week, holding up a sign reading “Abortion is murder” or similar, and then comes in one day having an abortion, what would you say to that? What if that young woman is back in the picket line a few days after that?
Or same as above, just that the person is a mother herself and brings in her daughter for an abortion?

Posted on June 26, 2011 at 12:56pmYep. The “do as I say, not as I do” game is played by busybodies on a regular basis. Here’s my stance on this morality two-step: I don‘t give a damn if you can’t keep your convictions straight as long as I don’t have to pay for your choices. This is why you never send money to televangilists, climate change gurus or politicians: They tend to engage in the very behavior they’re railing against.

Yeah, you.
PP provides other services than abortions. Actually, the majority of services PP provides are not abortion-related. They provide health checks, mammograms, contraceptives, pap smears and many other things to poor women who work two or three jobs and cannot afford to skip work, lest they lose their jobs and their children starve.

The will of the people has no place in the courts unless it comes from the jury box. If you haven’t figured this out yet let me explain. The constitution was designed so that the will of the people, even if it be the will of the majority, can not infringe on the rights of the minority. That was the will of the founders.

The problem is that many people (and mind you, I’m not addressing you specifically here because I do not know your opinion on the matter!) will only protect the life and happiness of the child until it is born, but after that it can go screw itself.
Many, many people who are vehemently against abortions are also vehemently against social support for poor children who their parents cannot afford to feed. You can see how that could be construed as hypocritical? If you oppose abortions because you care about the well-being of a child, you should also make sure that that child receives all the help it needs after it is born to start a productive and happy life. Food on the table, a good education, a safe, nurturing environment. And in many cases, these things can only be provided with your (and my, for that matter) tax dollars.

No, you don’t. That’s impractical. Your tax dollars go to a lot of things. To fix the potholes in front of your street or otherwise maintain the roads you drive on, to replace streetlights, to replace sewage pipes from your house as they collapse, to maintain phone and electrical lines to your house, to maintain water lines to your house, to pay for the schools and teachers who educate the next generation of Americans, to pay wages the Fire Department to keep your house from burning down or perform CPR when a family member has a heart attack, to pay the police who go after the bad guys, to pay wages to military who go after the bad guys, to pay for interstate highways to transport goods from one part of the country to another.
I could go on, obviously, indefinitely. Your taxes and mine pay for the benefits of the country we live in. But to answer your question, no, you don’t get to decide whether a dollar goes to maintain the road in front of your house, or replace the streetlight across town. If you don’t like the way the dollars are being spent, then you vote for someone who claims they represent you better.

Report Post »I note that you haven’t addressed @ the rights of Billy and his request that you answer the second part of his statement. I obvious as to why you haven’t. You support the murder of infants, willingly, knowingly and you have NO moral compass left to your usage anymore.
God shall have his vengeance upon you, and not by the hand of man either, just so you know who exactly created and uncreated you in the end.

Yeah, thats the Federal government‘s health care panel’s role.

Posted on June 26, 2011 at 1:33pmBilly, I disagree. I can’t imagine a government, church, business or any organization where any individual would agree with everything they do. Maybe in another universe, but not here on Earth. You can support an organization, or politician for example, without agreeing with them 100%.
Most of what PP does is provide low cost medical services and education for the poor.
BetterDays – That‘s quite a spirited response given that I didn’t take a position on abortion, which I’m against. You may not know this, but abortion is legal in this country (see Roe v. Wade). If you want to live in a theocratic country, where someone like you gets to impose their morality on others, move to Iran.
And if I were you, I start getting my arguments to St. Peter lined up. He’s sure to ask why, when Christ taught us to help the poor, you lived your life fighting against helping the poor, and supported instead the “money changers.” See Mathew 21:12.

Weak, and tortured arguments.
I CAN imagine Churches, or businesses where i agree with everything they do, or I do not support them.
But you are correct about governments. So thank you for supporting my stance that governments should not be involved with taking my money, and funding immoral activities.
There is nothing immoral about building roads, unless it is the road to hell.
Your last paragraph is absurd. Conservatives give far more to help the poor than liberals.
Report Post »We do it on an individual basis, and prefer not to have the government do it in our name via taxes.

Posted on June 26, 2011 at 3:31pmErabin, I am a Hoosier and this is my state. We voted for our representatives and put them in position to legislate and represent us. They did thier job and passed a law under the guidelines of the Indiana State Constitution that was signed by our Govenor, nice and legal as it should be. They represented the people that voted them into office. I dont ever remember VOTING for this judge, wait,,,,the judge was appointed. Hmmmm, I didnt appoint that judge and niether did any of my neighbors and yet all of us voted for our representatives. Its nice to know that this appointed judge has the ability to null and void my states laws without ever having to be elected, by the will of the people, to thier position in government. This is a Republic and not a democracy so why is it that poll numbers really matter. We dont live under mob rule. Polls can be manipulated to show any results that the poll takers choose to promote. When you do take a poll though you should ask more than just 10 demorats what there opinions are and then not use thier answers to say that this is the opinion of a whole state. My community backs the law and we live in this state. BTW, how does PP that deals with “reproduction” get translated to mean HEALTH CARE???? You make it sound like they are removing the sole source of medical care for the poor which is BS. This judge has over turned the will of the people and that should be criminal. NO ONE voted for this judge/czar.

Posted on June 26, 2011 at 8:00pmThe judges has NO business sticking their noses in wether or not a states decides to fund or not fund an organization. This judge NEEDS to be removed from office for overstepping his boundries way over the line. That is like when the labor board tries to tell a company where and where not in any state they can start a plant and put workers to work. This is communism close to it’s worst. IMPEACH THAT JUDGE!!!

Posted on June 27, 2011 at 9:55amI according to the Constitution only CONGRESS has the right to say where tax dollars are spent. Not the judical system. The Judge hasn’t the authority to demand any spending of tax payers funds.

Posted on June 27, 2011 at 1:48pmPlanned Parenthood was established for one main reason, to control (weed-out) the unwanted children that were being born into this world. This was a plan devised by Margaret Sanger to control the births of babies from it‘s inception in the early 1900’s. Their main business is to abort babies. To this day they still award the Maggie Award after the founder for the best performing employee of the business. What many people don’t realize is that there is an alternative in your community(ies) that offer the same services for free (sans abortion) such as pap smears, pre-natal care … etc and these are funded thru Christian organizations (mostly Catholics).
