Tea Party Ally FreedomWorks Targeted in Cyber Attack

According to the Wall Street Journal, a “mysterious” cyber attack reportedly struck the computer servers of FreedomWorks, a conservative grassroots organization frequently in the news for its outspoken support for the tea party movement. As the organization launched a major new fundraising initiative Thursday, FreedomWorks officials suspect their computer systems were attacked deliberately:

The attack crippled the site at about 9:45 a.m. just when the fund-raising drive was publicized on the radio by conservative talk show host Glenn Beck. The group estimates it lost about $80,000 in potential donations as it struggled to bring its site back online.

An “autopsy” showed a highly sophisticated hacker struck at 6:55 a.m., the group said, setting the stage for the eventual meltdown. The server was wiped out, though group officials said no data was lost or stolen.

“We think the idea was to take our site down until after the election,” said Kara Pally, web developer for FreedomWorks. “This was politically motivated.”

FreedomWorks’ spokesman Adam Brandon also suggested the computer malfunction was likely caused by external interference.  “To us, it’s no coincidence this happened the day our Beck money bomb was announced,” he said.  The fundraising “money bomb” was a goal of raising $200,000 between now and the Nov. 2 election to help conservative political candidates facing tough midterm election races.  “It‘s like the tea party movement’s been hacked,” Brandon said.

I had just sworn to myself a few days ago that I couldn’t afford to donate another dollar (after donating several hundred of dollars in recent weeks to elect conservative and Republican candidates). My budget is just too tapped-out now! But this morning’s cyber-attack on Freedom Works inspired me to find another $50 dollars and I just sent it to FreedomWorks via their PayPal link on their website. This crime against liberty this morning deserves that little bit extra from all of us who want to save our Nation from the self-loathing (and, now, criminal) liberal loons and their psychopathic Marxist pal in the White House.

WAITING 4 GEORGE asks, “Posts appearing many hours later or not at all.”

This is inane software based censorship. Software here at the Blaze looks for key words. If found, your article is held for moderation or simply never appears. This why I use “inane” in my comment.

Try our word A N A L YZE without those spaces. Your article will never appear. Software sees “A N A L” and your comments are deleted. Same is true many other legitimate words and expressions. Oddly, the F word, the S word and the A word do not result in censorship. The B word does cause censorship.

Software censorship (word parsing) is inane because this is the most stupid method of censorship and is only used by amateur programmers. Word parsing always causes problems like you are experiencing. Annoying, yes?

A good method for you is to highlight your comments then copy to your clipboard, or copy and paste into notepad or similar. Wait ten minutes. If your comments do not appear, then look through your copy and you will find a “hidden” taboo word. This type of censorship is A N A L retentive.

Simply copy your comments before posting. Wait ten minutes. Find the bad word, fix and post again.

It should be obvious to everybody with half a brain that the LIberal Progressive Socialists in Washington DC will continue to do ALL they can to disrupt the party of God (aka GOP). Dirty tricks, constant bombardment of conservatives, the Tea Party, the GOP. it will last right up to election day. Especially we have Mr. He Cool Obama (aka the Lone Cockroach) bouncing around the country like a cartoon out of Barney telling flat out lies to Americans and making promises he can not keep. This is all he is good for, he is a talker but not a doer. He is a narcissist that has an ego as big as the moon. This guy would not know the truth if it hit him square in the ass. But bad news for these despicable fools is that its too late. America is on to them and they know it even if they won’t admit it. On 2 November despite all their weak attempts to convince America to go socialist, it will time for these boneheads to shut up, sit down, and for the first time listen to the voices of millions of disgruntled Americans who have had enough of this Mickey Mouse government. It will be time for their employers (that’s you and me) to tell these harbingers of death and communist madmen that pink slips are on the way for many of them if not all. America will soon once again be on the road to financial recovery and although the road will be long because of what Obama has done to us, we will still ulltimately win because we are that exceptional country. We are the United States of America!

This “cyber attack” will turn out to be a Distributed Denial Of Service (DDoS) attack. Those are common. Our home server was attacked this way earlier this year. This type of DDoS attack can be defeated in a matter of minutes once a site administrator realizes what is happening.

A concerted effort is required to effect a DDoS attack. Strength of an attack like this is hundreds, possibly thousands of personal computers being comprised and commandeered; family computers. A measured percentage of participants here at the Blaze are using compromised computers. Your computer may have contributed to this attack.

This type of DDoS attack is simply flooding a server with “requests” as if a million people are trying to visit a web site all at the same time. Simple enough to defeat this type of attack but this requires constant monitoring of a system to be alerted of an ongoing attack.

Doubtful the FBI will give this specific attack much attention.

It’s not hard to keep your computer from being compromised. If your home personal computer is compromised you did it yourself. You are running file sharing applications, or got infected with malware files by downloading things from sketchy sources.

Hackers don‘t waste time targetting people’s home computers. There are too many millions of computers out there and no way to know if there’s anything on them worth having until you get in. Most people don’t even have anything on their computers worth a hackers time anyway. They will use your computer as a resource if you give it to them, but the myth that there is an army of hackers out there scanning every internet connection and trying to break in is just that a myth.

Hackers love to create zombie’s to do their dirty work for them.
Zombies are compromised computers that can be used in a distributed denial of service attack. They don’t care what information is on the machine. They care to hijack it. By they way I am pretty damn good at discovering malware and cleaning it up. I’ve been known to hack the registry entries to destroy some of the most sophisticated malware. Some of it is really bad.

Oh, and some of that malware comes from just a simple drive browsing of a compromised website. It is not always the users fault as some of it uses zero day exploits that undiscovered and unpatched. Stuxnet is one such example. Microsoft only recently created the patches to cover the four security vulnerabilities. I believe my computer automatically download and installed those upgrades just last week. Stuxnet has been infecting computers for over half a year now.

ROWGUE knows his Windows 3.1 well, “They said it was a sophisticated hack….”

Yeah, if this attack was a true hack, those folks at Freedomworks would never know or would still be offline. True hacking is very rare these days.

ROWGUE adds, “…any thirteen year old could do with the proper motivation.”

Yep. Probably a couple of mouth breathing pimple faced pre-masturbatory script kiddies did this.

I operate our own server machines here at home, web, email and DNS. All I see anymore is “robotic” scripts scanning IP Addresses for vulnerabilities, almost always PHP applications. Most of this originates out of China and Russia. I find spam email to be more annoying.

Some trivia for you, the last major worldwide DDoS attack was back in January of 2009. This was Russia trying to interrupt internet services over Georgia (Europe) because political disputes. Our DNS server received over ten-thousand requests per hour from dozens of zombie machines. What caught my attention is my internet connection was slow while cruising porno sites.

      * grins *

Only took a few minutes to stop those zombie machines by blocking entire IP Address ranges, kinda like closing the iris on a stargate.

You are correct, ROWGUE, this attack was not hacking, not even close; mere child’s play.

ROWGUE is truthful, “It’s not hard to keep your computer from being compromised. If your home personal computer is compromised you did it yourself.”

Sure enough. I contribute 95% of infected computers to naive computer users; mom and dad.

People are unaware a system infection is generally devastating. Last year, a girlfriend suckered into one of those fake pop-up messages, “Your computer is infected!” She suckered, downloaded one those “virus scanner” scam programs, “Antivirus 2009”, which proved impossible to remove.

She was lucky I was able to save her data text files to CD without risk. Ended up I had to format her drive then reinstall Windows, followed by locating and replacing her third party software. This proved an all day job. Had to buy a new sound board, could not find correct sound drivers for her old sound board. Took a couple of hours to have her video board correctly back online.

Most interesting, she spread this infection through her iPod thing by sharing music with friends.

I told her we needed to simply throwaway her computer and buy a new system. She could not afford this. Buying a new computer is easier than fixing an infected computer.

My girlfriend now knows to keep her Windows updated, keep her Windows firewall turned on and to run a simple virus scanner, which was free from Antivir.

Most important, she no longer suckers into those scam web sites.

ROWGUE bruises my feminine ego, “Most people don’t even have anything on their computers worth a hackers time anyway.”

I would like to think nude photographs of me are worth CIA hacker attention.

I also have a created a DVD that allows me to boot into Windows XP. It is a great tool for destroying any nasty rootkit malware. It is too bad that this is a third party application and Bill Gates have never seen the need for it. There might come a time that you need to access your defective hard drive in order to copy it’s data.

CONSERVATIVE GRINCH comments, “There might come a time that you need to access your defective hard drive in order to copy it’s data.”

Lot of computer savvy people use detachable hard drives for backup. Others use online data storage.

I run two machines here at home. One is a workbench machine, the other hosts our servers. Both are connected together by a router. Each machine has two hard drives. After a clean scan, a backup of data is made on a secondary drive on a local machine, then an additional backup is made on the secondary drive of the remote machine via our router. Our family uses our workbench machine for cruising the web, our server machine is never used for cruising the web.

If there is a problem with our server machine, I can use the “forwarding” service of our router to have our workbench machine act as a server until I fix whatever problem with our actual server. Going on a decade, never needed to do this but I faithfully keep double redundancy backups.

I write a lot. Once a week I burn my writings to CD to be absolutely sure of a safe backup copy.

A month or so back having two machines really paid off. A Microsoft update for XP corrupted the registry on our workbench machine leaving the machine unable to boot to Windows. I was able to use our server machine to Google around for a solution. Found an MSDOS command line method to copy in the original default registry installed when a new system. This allowed me to boot to Windows then use “restore” to bring the machine back up to date, least within a couple of days.

Most people view their computers as toasters, until something goes wrong. All their data, photographs, music, tax returns and other valuable data and treasures end up burnt toast.

Computers users only need to perform two simple tasks to be safe; run a decent firewall and backup data. Well, those two things along with using a bit of common sense when out on the web.

We need to fight fire with fire but not on their despicable terms. We need to be one or even two steps ahead of them. The Tea Party needs to hire their own hackers. Not to hack into them (that would be unhonorable) but to prevent them into hacking and distabilizing our Patriotic Cause. Surely we are many times smarter and better equiped with our innovating ideas that we can beat these scoundrels at their own games without loosing or compromising any of our integrity. We need to do something that they would never expect us to do like really donating as much as we can to support our cause. For example: We could all use the snail mail with an actual check in the envelope! I bet they wouldn’t expect that. Also I’ve been going to the Huffington Post just to see how people have been commenting on different current affairs. I only read and Never comment. No point, because I really am not impressed with them at all. Needless to say it really can give us some insight on how these people think. Please put your ideas to work.

This is just the begining of what is to come. Look at what they did to Juan Williams. We need to all be on our A Game. Buckle Up everyone it’s going to be a rough ride.

This is nothing. Wait untill they loose the house and or the senate. And don’t forget, this president and the administration have no doubt already planed for this. Does anyone recall how they controlled the media prior to the presidential elections?? About a year ago and I heard it reported that they were going to do the same thing from then on. We actually have no idea what these people are doing. To them, control is everything.

      SOLAVERITAS
whenever some one says “the ends justify the means” what they are really saying is “my means are my ends”
That saying may be the most despicable in the human language. funny how the word Justify is actually in the statement. its always used by those who look to justify theft, murder, or enslavement.

Hey guys…Have you ever wondered why the big push for electronic voting machines? They are unhackable-right? But the moment that there is an investigation into electronic voting machines that were used in the last election-a mysterious fire destroys all of the voting machines where they were stored (Houston Tx)…Freedom works-yes, be on your toes. Yes they have hackers in their employ. And yes, there are very evil parties that are hell bent on the destruction of this country. We already know it, and now we realize whats at stake. We know what they are trying to do-the only question is how they plan to do it. Looking at other revolutions around the world recently, was there one without violence? One where people didn‘t ’disappear? Remember that all Marxist and communist revolutions have used violence to obtain power, and genocide to secure it. History shows us what lengths they will go to. Be prepared people. And when these elections come and I pray that we the people win. Let us not forget that there are traitors in our midst. Treason is a capital offense. Any member of government associated with a group or organization who has plotted against this country and its people or to subvert the Constitution should be tried-convicted and made an example of. I view it as attempted mass murder. Lets concentrate on winning our country back the right way-honorably. But let us not forget what they are and what they would do with their power….
