Conservative Chicago Radio Host Fired Over McDonald’s Boycott

Lenny McAllister Loses Job at WVON 1690 AM Over McDonalds Holiday

This story involves one man’s personal family tragedy, a conservative talk radio host…and McDonald’s.

And now the Tea Party and a Chicago chapter of the NAACP are banding together to protest against WVON-1690-AM, “The Talk of Chicago.”

Lenny McAllister has been a conservative talk-show host on WVON-AM.

He’s also been a mentor to 21-year-old Jentri Casaberry.

Casaberry took time off from his McDonald’s night manager job to be at the bedside of his premature son during the final hours of his life.  The baby died in just the first week of life.

Casaberry says McDonald’s then fired him for not showing up to work.

The word made its way to McAllister who shared the story with listeners, telling them to take a “holiday” from patronizing McDonald’s franchises owned by the operator who fired Casaberry.

McAllister wrote this statement on his Facebook page:

“Lenny McAllister has called for a “holiday” from McDonald‘s here on the south side of Chicago until those restaurants’ leadership (and ownership) learn to mentor, support, and guide our young people more rather than simply abusing them while they are at their lowest points, only to complain about them once they’re all used up – until then, DO NOT FREQUENT MCDONALD’S on the south side of Chicago.”

For speaking out against McDonald’s, a long time advertiser with the radio station, McAllister then lost his job.

The Root, an online news source “founded in 2008 under the leadership of Prof. Henry Louis Gates Jr.” (beer summit), now reports that the Tea Party and NAACP is working together to take on the radio station:

“Now the Chicago Far South Suburban branch of the NAACP is planning to protest the station to help McAllister win his job back, said branch’s president, David L. Lowery Jr. And in a strange turn of events, the Tea Party — of which McAllister is a member — is offering its assistance, Lowery said. No date has been set for the protest.

Both Lowery and McAllister alleged that McAllister‘s firing was based on pressure from McDonald’s, a longtime advertiser with WVON.”

The Root reports that the NAACP has already helped Casaberry find employment, and now they want to help McAllister get his job back.

McAllister appeared on Glenn Beck’s Fox News show in November 2009.

Wait, the story doesn‘t say whether that McDonald’s they are boycotting is a corporate owned McDonald’s or a franchise. If it’s a franchise (which is the more likely) McDonald’s corporate needs to get involved here. This may be a real crappy owner as opposed to big bad corporate America.

I started boycotting Mickey D’s while in the Corps. It happened after I afte a cheapo double cheesburger then went running. I could have sworn that my whole body was changed and that my arteries felt clogged or constricted for the entire time I ran. After eating only one of their burgers, and one of the smallest of them, I could not run like I usually did. It is my belief that there are so many chemical preservatives and hormone in their meat and everything else to change how a person’s body operates, and I didn’t like how it operated after eating that junk.

It funny though that Taco Bell has never done the same thing, neither has wendy’s or subway.

This has little to do with McDonalds, and more to do with the Franchisee that operates the McDonalds in question. I think that Mr. McAllister was correct in saying what he said so that if nothing else they got the attention of the Franchisee, and make hims more sympathetic to the personal side of his employees. If the Franchisee is black then the NAACP should have a lot more leverage against this operator and start calling for people to not work for a company that has not the least shred of sympathy for their employees plight when the plight in genuine.

I dearly love my black conservative brothers, so better leave them alone or be nice. As far as the NAACP & TEA PARTY working together, I approve. It means we can work together when we need or want to. I applaud the talk show host for his sympathetic gesture to show his concern for a poor man who’s child was dying and needed time to mourn. What kind of person wouldn’t let a man be off work at a time like that? Obviously heartless folks. And just as sick, to fire Lenny McAllister is beyond the pale. He needs to be hired back with a raise for his kindness and sympathy toward his friend. I’d have done the same thing.
BTW: I don‘t eat hamburgers at McDonalds because I’m afraid of what’s in the beef also. In fact, I hardly ever eat anything with ground meat, except at home, as I buy good natural/organic meat.

All these big corporations are running roughshod over their employees.

For example, Walmart doesn’t recognize that the parents of their employees are “immediate family” and will fire them if they take off work for their last visit or funeral of a parent.

When/if the economy picks up these corporations that treat their employees this way will see a mass exodus of their best employees going to companies who know how important their employees are.

You have a point, but there is a bit of psychologically sound reasoning to working with them on this. One – it might show various individuals within the group and elsewhere that the TEA party isn’t as racist as it has been painted. Two – it could act as a positive reinforcement towards acting without bias towards other non-black-specific groups. After all, it’s not protecting black interests that is bad. It‘s doing so at the exclusion of all others that’s the problem.

This is an example of something that’s (probably) legal, but stupid. McD’s is likely within their contractual rights to fire their employee, but it’s a dumb thing to do so. McD‘s could have made so much more positive PR and had people busting their doors down to do business with them if they had gone the opposite direction and not just excused the absence but made a public donation to help premature babies like Casaberry’s.

A lock step stance on dogma is an unreasoned approach and stifles debate. I believe that minorities benefit under conservative ideology, but, again, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and now Jr, and Jones must oppose it because it would lessen their power base. It’s all about keeping power, not helping people or the country.

There is probably enough misunderstanding for everyone to have a share! Why not (1) address the issue and (2) reconcile if it is warranted! As a listener, I‘d be tempted to ’turn the dial’ and never come back to that spot on the dial, so they’d keep their sponsor but lose their audience! Get it!

Wow! I think that the NAACP and the Tea Party should work on a lot more than that together.
I grew up on the streets of the South Side of Chicago. I took the “B” (Englewood) ‘L’ train downtown from 63rd & Stony Island, spend summers at Rainbow Beach and practically lived at the Science and Industry museum on weekends. I can remember back about 50 years. Yeah, folks on the south side have more nowadays; more single family households, more gangs, more violence, more drop-outs… all under full control of Democrats. White Democrats I note, have seemed to fare much better during the same period.

Perhaps the NAACP should get with the Tea Party and say that they’ll rally the Black vote ONE time for Republicans, IF Republicans do X,Y,Z. These should be things like bringing in better schools, better teachers, and begin creating more job opportunities. Things that one would have thought that Democrats could have done over the last 50 YEARS, especially with full control of not only city government but teachers unions, the NEA, etc. See if Republicans can make more progress over 4 years than Democrats have done over the last 50… If they can’t fine. Take the votes back to Democrats. But it would seem to me that Black Democrats in Chicago would have little to lose (other than perhaps threats from Rahm for abandoning the Democrats… but from what I remember, folks on the south side are pretty tough, and don’t react well to threats!).

I disagree. The schools nor the teachers are not the problem. It is very difficult to keep talented teachers when you get shot in the head by some punk you gave an F. It gets even harder given the low pay due to the low income of the area they serve. Add ontop of all of that a CULTURE in where disrespecting the administration is cool. Where no one listens to you, with half of them using a phone to text or play games. Then the final blow is a total lack of cooperation from the parents.

Especially when it comes out that the air he was working in caused the problem in the first place.

Folks, these places like macD’s are poison. Pure and simple……you just die a little slower than Arsenic

You don’t know why they fired him. You really only have half the story don’t you. Responsible people make arrangements when they can’t make it to work for whatever reason. There’s not enough information to form a reasonable opinion.

We don‘t eat that clown’s crap anyway. But I will dedicate all future non-McD’s trips to McAllister. Burger King should hire the guy, would make good PR,

Awesome! Hopefully the NAACP and the black community, in general, realizes that Conservativism and the TEA Party movement is in the best interest of ALL Americans, not simply one demographic. Furthermore, Libertarians, Conservatives, and Civil Libertarians, have philosophies that are far more beneficial for minorities than the Leftist/Progressive policy of handouts-for-votes.

Remember, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

NAACP constituents and TEA party; agree on more issues than with the Liberal/Democratic party; And that‘s something the Democratic plantation owners won’t allow their Fieldhand wranglers to admit!

      Truth has no agenda!

And the truth is the TEA party is the middle! Rebirth of the Reagan democrat! Hopefully they turn into Perry/Paul democrats!

Philosophy majors with no real world job skills and no one looking to hire them are the only one‘s rooting for Social Justice and gov’t programs otherwise Van Jones and Obama would be unemployed!

All the ATypical Black mom cares about is education!! They buy the idea more money for education means more success! Show them something different; and blow up the democratic party! Give them vouchers for private school; don’t talk about race; stop making extra laws to lock up their children and let the democratic enviromentalist one world govt, sexually confused, union cheats eat themselves alive!

Sounds like a Ron Paul movement to me!!

I say we all boycott Mc D’s for selling crap and telling people its food. The sad story here is, its the all might dollar. Company’s are loosing touch. Its all about profit and not the people. Oh do I sound like a commie dem? No, just a Christian Conservative not afraid to tell the truth.

Jesus had no money, not even a place to lay his head at night. The pursuit of money leads to evil. How did Jesus get by? I‘m not saying don’t earn money, but when profits are first, your last.
