Tea Party Rep. Refuses Congressional Health Plan

A newly-elected GOP Rep. announced that he is refusing the congressional health insurance plan in a show of solidarity with the American people.
Rep-elect Joe Walsh (R-IL) told the New York Times that he will stick to his Tea Party roots and decline the government health care provided to members of congress.
“I don’t think congressmen should get pensions or cushy health care plans,” he said. But it‘s a decision that’s not being welcomed by everyone in his family. Walsh’s wife has a pre-existing medical condition, and she’ll now be charged with the difficult task of finding a plan on the open market.
Walsh joins two other Republicans in declining the government’s health plan. So far, incoming Reps. Bobby Schilling (IL) and Mike Kelly (PA) have made similar decisions.
But Walsh’s decision is in lockstep with some of his other positions. He’s a staunch fiscal conservative who wants serious entitlement reform, is hoping to repeal Obamacare, and is even against the recent tax-rate deal.
“We cut taxes, raised spending and contributed to the deficit,” he said of the deal. “Republicans should have held out for something better.”
That, along with the rejection of health care, may be politically incorrect. But Walsh doesn’t care.
“I’m going to D.C. absolutely prepared to lose in two years.”

Posted on December 27, 2010 at 10:38amPerhaps it’s semantics, but the story indicates members of Congress are ‘provided’ health care plans…that’s not true. Members may purchase health care insurance, group term life insurance and other benefits program elements at their discretion — just like all Federal employees.
There is no difference between the plans available to members of Congress and those available to everyone else in the country. Until the mandate for health insurance companies to accept all persons into their systems is fully implemented, health insurance companies that contract with the Office of Personnel Management to provide insurance products to the Federal work force are no more likely to cover a person with a preexisting condition than any other insurance provider.
I salute Rep.Joe Walsh for his principled stand, but remember: what he’s doing is more symbolic than substantive…many members of Congress don’t subscribe to the policies available to Federal employees because they already health and, or life insurance or they find the OPM-managed programs too expensive…
Be assured, Rep. Walsh is not uninsured…nor are any other members of the Congress.

Posted on December 27, 2010 at 1:24pmWell said & obviously well informed. You’re right they can purchase OPM provided health insurance or stay with what the already have – again, at least until Obamacare kicks in they have a choice.

Posted on December 27, 2010 at 10:34amThis is where some of our doctors in their area need to step forward and work with his wife to show they will help take care of her. This is the American way. Come on doctors step up to the plate. Let each of as Americans get in the fight and do what we can do to keep this nation going. When I was a child and had polio the doctor never even asked for payment. He went around with a pocket wadded with bills and his nurse said he would dump it on her desk when he came in the office. She asked who paid and he said he didn‘t know but everyone knew what they owed so he didn’t have to worry about it.
What has happened to our world that everyone is more worried about money than they are about other people? Thank God he has placed me in a position where I have a large back yard and I can help others with victory gardens like we had during the war. This younger generation needs to experience all of us pulling together to do what we can for each other. That is where the joy comes from in this life. You can’t take all your toys with you, you have to leave them for someone else who may not appreciate them. You can take the joy with you in your spirit as you leave this earth.
Thank you new Reps for having the guts to follow your convictions. Let’s see some Americans come up with a great cost effective idea for helping them and their family with their insurance and medical needs and from that we will find a great solution for us all! Think America Think outside the box!

Posted on December 28, 2010 at 9:02amI agree with doctors taking on special cases pro bono. But as Glenn has pointed out, when the government steals most of your income and malprractice insurance is $100K+/year, that kind of steals their ability to be a charitable as they might otherwise be. I think most doctors make the incredible sacrifices they make because they want to help people. Most of them are terrible businessmen and really aren’t that focused on the financials. There are exceptions.
Before the govenrment got involved and demanded HMOs, health insurance was only for major costs, like surgeries, not little Johnn’y cold or sore throat. For that, people used to pay the doctor directly or treated it themselves. It was like car insurance, you only used it for a major accident, not for an oil change. The advantages to that were that there was a market cost control element, people didn’t go to the doctor unless they really needed to, and the cost of the care was visible to everyone. They way it is now, we usually have no idea what something costs until the ten subsequent mailings arrive over the next 4 months and even then, it takes a MBA to figure who paid what for what. No wonder costs are out of control, we don’t even know what they are. Its a stupid system. Add on the ridiculous slip-and-fall-lawyer industry and doctors operate in a defensive mode. Hard to help people in this environment.
Insurance companies are businesses and exist to make a profit. They may do lots of charitable work, but that comes from their profits ad they are NOT charitable organizations. That’s what churches and charities are for. If the CEO of Kaiser Permanente wants 5 planes, that’s up to the company and is no business of mine or the government.
I have no doubt people will do the right thing if freed up to do so. Americans are terrificly generous people, especially God’s disciples. Just give us the Fair Tax, cut government meddling, and watch the economy explode. That will generate tons of wealth and lots more to give to those in need.

I think they should get no pension, but should be allowed to contribute to the government Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) (a 401(k) like plan). They should also be required to pay social security and medicare. Then we will see those who really believe in being “civil servants” vice being career bottom feeding politicians.

Posted on December 27, 2010 at 1:18pmAgreed on the pensions v/s TSP as well as the social security & medicare taxes but while I applaud his ideals as a “fiscal conservative who wants serious entitlement reform,[&] is hoping to repeal Obamacare “ his position on not taking employer provided health insurance (which existed before ObamaCare) is a bit too idealistic since it will likely hurt his wife. If your job offers an opportunity to purchase insurance as part of the company plan there’s nothing dishonorable about buying it – especially if it helps your family.
The key point is that he HAS THE CHIOCE to take it or not – unlike the ObamaCare MANDATE!

Think about it. Say we set term limits, the people we then send to Washington would go knowing they are going to do a job. Not cultivate a career that is sustained by making deals and most of the time selling out the very principals that got them elected in the first place. I think we could honestly get people who would put the “WE THE PEOPLE” about their own interest.
Another thing I would like to see is starting with the President should have a new law stating they must have served in the military to be qualified to run for the Presidential office. How can someone who has never served in the military have the highest command?????????

While Term Limits are a good idea, lets just play devils advocate here, what if the career politician spends his entire career actually doing good. Would not term limits limit his ability to do good? Not to mention that you don’t get a whole heck of a lot done during the first 2 terms anyways. Up until that point no one takes you seriously.
And to your idea of requiring military service in order to be president. That is an absolutely horrible idea. I am diabetic and cannot serve in the military, though I would love to, should I be banned from running for president because of that fact? God forbid we have a president that is a pacifist or something. While term limits have a valid argument for them, requiring military service is just dumb.
