Teacher Assigns Students to Read About ‘Wine-Guzzling Socialist’ Jesus Christ

Some parents in Bedford, N.H., are calling for action against school officials who assigned their teenagers a book that refers to Jesus Christ as a “wine-guzzling vagrant and precocious socialist.”

The book, “Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America,” was assigned as a project of a personal finance class at Bedford High School. One child’s parents took their complaints to school district officials who put together a committee of teachers, administrators and community members to assess the book. According to the committee’s review, the book’s “educational merit” outweighed its questionable passages.

“We found the book provided valuable insight into the circumstances of the working poor and an opportunity for students to demonstrate mastery of the ‘Financial Impact’ competency,” the committee reported.

But the committee’s findings did not sit well with Dennis and Aimee Taylor whose son had been assigned the book. “We had almost PhD people letting this fumble through their fingers, and they all said it was grand,” Dennis, a conservative Christian, told the Union-Leader. “I think there should be a review of these individuals and perhaps some firing done.”

“Nickel and Dimed” is a first-person account of author Barbara Ehrenreich’s failed attempts to make a living at various minimum wage jobs across the country. Written in response to 1996 welfare reform, the book offers a serious critique of the current economic system, which Ehrenreich argues preys on the poor. …

The Taylors also took issue with the book’s portrayal of Christians. In one scene, Ehrenreich attends a tent revival meeting, and is troubled by its emphasis on Jesus Christ’s crucifixion, rather than his social teachings.

“Jesus makes his appearance here only as a corpse; the living man, the wine-guzzling vagrant and precocious socialist, is never once mentioned, nor anything he ever had to say,” Ehrenreich writes.

In addition to its unsavory characterization of Christ, the Taylors also complained about the book’s use of obscene language and anti-capitalist message.

“The author is a known social Marxist, hates everything American, everything that America stands for or was built on,” Aimee Taylor said. “I mean when you read the book you see that strongly in this woman’s agenda. It’s horrible.”

Indeed, the author of the book, Barbara Ehrenreich, is an ardent political activist on the left who praises socialism and the redistribution of wealth, calls for the end of free-market capitalism and even happily celebrates the anniversary of Karl Marx’s Communist Manifesto. (Click here for the “Teacher’s Guide“ to ”Nickel and Dimed.”)

Bedford Assistant Superintendent Chip McGee told the Union-Leader that the book committee had decided the author’s work as a whole was a worthwhile read for students.  “We need to balance the instructional value of the book against its shortcomings, rather than looking at any isolated passage, and rather than looking at the belief system of the author,” McGee said.

In response to parents’ complaints, the school district has implemented a new policy requiring teachers to notify parents before assigning books in class.  If parents object, an alternative is to be provided.

In the meantime, the Taylors have begun homeschooling their son and are reportedly planning to attend an upcoming Dec. 13 meeting of the Bedford School District to request the book be removed from the curriculum.

Perhaps the Taylors’ homeschooling curriculum will include “Scratch Beginnings” — a book written by Adam Shepard, a graduate of Merrimack College who set out to live the American Dream with just $25.  Shepard‘s book was conceived as a counter response to Ehrenreich’s “Nickel and Dimed” and “Bait and Switch.”

This is no surprise. N.H. is a liberal (progressive) state so this has been going on for many a year. Glenn has been warning us about this very thing. They are poisoning the minds of our young to satisfy their agenda. The unions are now infiltrating our churchs to do the very same thing. These people have to be exposed and identified so they may be neutralized. Time to make a stand !

Put the BIBLE back not only into the school libraries, but into each classroom on campus. Make it mandatory reading. Do they still have on-campus suspension? Be a great detriment to getting into trouble and having to read several books of the BIBLE and write a literary REVIEW (not critique) of what was assigned. Better than that, have the students being disciplined read ALOUD to an adult who can help them with the phrasing, understanding of what it is they are reading. HELLLLOOOOO??? Offer a class with advanced credit and academic placement for studying the word of GOD. The BIBLE will stand up to and against any other literature on its own.

As to the “poor little darling authoress”: BAH! HUMBUG you lazy twit! Get over your miserable life. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps and get out there and make an HONEST WOMAN of yourself. This book is pandering to the left and to leading youth astray. I believe our LORD AND SAVIOR said it would be better if you had a millstone hung around your neck and you would be dropped into the sea than to mislead one of these children who believe in JESUS. Check it out. It is mentioned more than once.

The Communists of the “Frankfurt School” came to the U.S. in 1935 as refugees from Hitler’s Germany, touting the works of Antonio Gramsci who was a Machiavellian who laid-out the plan to infiltrate education and psychology by using Communist tactics to establish Socialist-Communist thought in the minds of U.S. college students. They were welcomed by Columbia University and set up shop there. They got support from ex-Wilsonian elitists and other leftists. Their work has slowly infiltrated our textbooks for the past 70 years. We did nothing. Are we surprised? Can you speak Chinese?

Not only that, but the Carneagie‘s and Rockerfeller’s created the Dept of Ed to dumb down Americans, so they cannot think for themselfs, can’t balance a checkbook, and no nothing about real history. How about taking a page out of the Alinsky playbook and drive them nuts? Let’s get grandparents, retired TEACHERS and other retirees together and have them start homeschooling their grandchildren and neighbor’s children. The more people who pull their children from the schools will give the schools less and less need to have as many EDUCATORS(aka indoctrinators), curriculum specialists (propaganda developers), and HIGHLY overpaid administrators. This action will force cutbacks and, if it could be done, stop paying the portion of taxes which go to the school system. This sort of cutback is already starting to happen with all the charter schools that are popping up around the country. What really needs to happen is for taxpaying citizens to realize that all the increased taxes that they are paying to fund the schools has done NOTHING to improve the quality of education being given. Time to demand results, not more requests for more money, more teachers, bigger schools, etc.!

I researched them and the F word was used so many times I got fed up. I approached the school they told me to just talk to the teacher, I was told that the reading was approved by the Govt in 2009. They don’t believe in banning books. I told them it was not their place to decide what my son can read. They still allow the books to be read.

They can try to take God out of everything, but it will never work. Too many of us will not allow it and are willing to put in the work it takes to make sure our posterity knows God. I have read the book and found it very interesting. Quite a few flaws in her life experiments though. I would reccomend this book for a high school kid as long as the students could discuss the author’s flaws in her premise as well as the merits. I believe in having open discussions of just about any subject, as long as the author’s beliefs are discussed in a fair and balanced manner rather than having ideology forced down kids throats. After all, putting light on a subject will expose the truth.

This is disgusting that anyone would feel this woman has anything to offer but jealousy of those that have and their rhetoric of always, “I want you to spread your wealth around.” My guess is this lady did not take advantage of her educational privileges so fell into the bottom wage bracket. Why is it that they want everyone to share what others have worked for. They already do share, ‘Welfare, SSI, Medicare, Section 8 Housing, free education, free lunches, free field trips and you could go on and on. They seem to grow up with an attitude of “You owe me because I am poor.” If all these people were to take over as is planned for them to do with the Communist and Marxist out there, everyone would be poor but those who run the government. The poor would not be one bit better off. With the free enterprise gone, there is no incentive for anyone to work. Doesn’t anyone read history and know the truth about Marxism and Communism. Here comes a new bunch of idiots educated in our colleges that think they know how to make it work. Why read this woman’s book; it has nothing to offer to our youth. Teach them to read and to write and do their aritmetic and quit messing up their minds with philosophies that do not work.

      The Koran, maybe?

Any school system that would promote social … over Reading, wRiting and aRithmetic has a problem.

Anybody under the thumb of that system should be outraged by it; and, doing something at home to balance it out. Probably teaching children the constitution, at home, would be a good start.

Then they can point out to their teachers that actions called for in the book are unconstitutional.

Next teach them what’s wrong with Keynesian economic theory.

When they next go to school they can point out, to their teachers, that the authors assumptions are incorrect; and, be able to explain why.

For the religious, the bible stuff should be a no-brainier.

The Jewish students can talk about how Jesus was the son of an architect who traveled to the far east and studied yoga, not a drunk.

The Christian students can talk about how he’s the son of God, died for our collective sins; and, stud for individual redemption, individual action, and individual rights, not a drunk.
The can even point out that the only mention of his ever being violent was with a tax collector.

The Muslim students can talk about how he was a great profit, not a drunk.

And the Atheists can complain that he never really existed, and could, therefor, not have been a drunk.

They worshiped the “Godess of Reason” who was a common prostitute and elevated to the level of deity. Soon afterward came the repression by violence (the terrors and the purges).

This combined with Obama’s refusal to include the word “God” in any original document shows that the Progressives have an anti-Christian agenda. Here in Oklahoma we voted 70% to ban the use of Sharia law in our courts. A single judge threw it out at the request of the Muslims. So Islamic religious law is usable in court, but you still can’t post the Ten Commandments in the courthouse.

Did anybody look at the teacher’s guide? Why do teacher‘s even go to the expense of an education when they’re given explicit lesson plans? While other countries “compensate for the inadequacy of wages by providing relatively generous public services, the U.S. leaves them to fend for themselves”. Why is a reporter allowed to preach her religion in a public school? Why are the kids required to listen to it? Isn’t social justice a religion?

This is why I homeschooled my grandchildren. I did it even before Beck asked us to.

Talking about reason interesting after seeing the article about the bill board saying Christmas is a myth so we celebrate the season of reason…Acura came up with an add that said “Season of Reason” Hmmm is there a connection?

As offensive material is removed from the schools, there will be nothing left to read. I remember when there was the big debate about “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” because it had the “N” being used. Lucky for me there was no group that was offended by prostitution or selling daughters when I was in school, or I wouldn’t have ever read “The Good Earth”.

Religion and State are clearly separated in the US Constitution. If you want your child to be brain-washed into believing in fantastical fallacy, enroll them in a religious education program.

This is only PART of the story……..go read about this school…….they use the Real World Learning Curriculum. Real World Learning tries to indroctorinate kids into government direction and political activism. This is a public school with a student / teacher ratio of 13:1 School is 97% white Real World Learning requires students to work 60 hr per year in school ‘approved’ community service and participate in political activities. Among the clubs listed are the Gay/Straight alternative and the Green Club. This is tax payer dollars in action. (They also had a drug bust in October)

Scriptually Speaking, “wine” is a generic term of which there are 2 kinds, one being fomented (“old”) and un-fomented (“New”, Matthew 26:29). Jesus never drank fomented wine (or any acholoic beverage), and there are no scripture verses to prove other wise. Jesus did drink “FRESH” grape juice (called “NEW WINE”) as is taught in the New Testament Scriptures. So the writter of this book has no understanding of Holy Scripture, because he is not a saved person. Who does not have the Holy Spirit of God indwelling “IN” him, so he cound not reiceved the things of God,(God’s Word) neither can he know them,(for they are spiritual discerned) for he is still, the natural man (spiritually dead), mentioned in the NT book, 1 Corithians 2 : 9 – 16 !! Those also in N.H. schools engaged in this rhetoric, does so out of ignorance of Holy Scripture and to their own distruction, for God himself will hold them and all who mock the Word of God, accountable to their being cast “INTO” (Luke 16:24) the flames of Hell !!

“One World Order”, taking shape around the globe, in our day !!! Look up, for Jesus cometh to take up HIS Church, the “Born Again” FOLLOWERS of His gospel, (The Word of God)

Mark Twain said, “First God made idiots. That was for practice. Then He made school boards.”

Webpreacher, what do you know about the New Hampshire school system? I went to Manchester High School Central in Manchester, New Hampshire and I can say, with great confidence, that I have received a better education than most of the other students at my college; and a good majority of them went to private Catholic high schools throughout the country. You are an moronic fool that has no idea what they are talking about. Stop spreading fallacy about New Hampshire and go back to your sad little life.
