Teacher Fired for Organizing Fundraiser for Trayvon Martin Family

Brooke Harris, an English teacher at Michigan’s Pontiac Academy for Excellence Middle School, was inexplicably fired recently with little to no explanation – and according to Harris, the reason is that she tried to organize a rally to support the family of slain teen Trayvon Martin. Yahoo News caught the item:
Harris said while the school’s principal signed off on the fundraiser, Superintendent Jacqueline Cassell said no because of the manner in which they would be wearing the hoods – over their heads. Harris asked Cassell to meet with the students so they could present their case, but Harris was suspended for two days.
“I was told I was a bad teacher, that I was being unprofessional, that I’m being paid to teach, not to be an activist. When I tried to defend myself, it was construed as insubordination,” Harris told the Detroit Free Press.[...]
“I asked her if she could please tell me what I did wrong to come to the first meeting,” Harris said in a report by The Detroit News. “After I asked that question twice, she never gave me an answer — then she fired me.”
The Superintendent has denied that the firing had anything to do with Harris’ alleged activism, and has claims that she only refused to approve the protest because exams are coming up. The Associated Press report sheds little light on the subject, only adding that the students would have asked to wear hoodies in place of their uniforms, and that Harris had encouraged them to make the request in person to the superintendent.
The incident has already sparked protests from groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center, and from Detroit Area Black Churches.
Dawud Walid, executive director of the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said the Academy’s decision was a “travesty” that would only hurt students.
“It taught the students who tried to organize and tried to raise their voice in terms of social justice that they will be repressed,” Walid said at a news conference at a Detroit church. “Instead of empowering our children … the Pontiac Academy is actually teaching children to internalize oppression and internalize racism.”
A rally about the Martin case and Harris’ firing was scheduled at the church — King Solomon Missionary Baptist — for Tuesday evening. Harris was expected to be there.

You can’t just stick to the story and deal with it, can you? The only racial aspect mentioned was brought up by the obvious racist, Dawud Walid, who’s TRUE conviction is for Muslims. Yet the blamers came rushing to the well to publicly rinse themselves with the kool aid.
Wow. Read the comments above. Read the story, and read the comments. The fact that these ding dongs AREN’T constantly derided by the rest of the the Blazers is bothersome.

Yeah, there seems to be something missing in this account. The little bit given here makes Brooke Harris seem pretty sympathetic regardless of how one feels about the Martin-Zimmerman case. A school might not want to be put in an awkward position with a possibly controversial fundraiser, but nor would they welcome the scrutiny that this firing would bring.

The teacher wanted to have a “Support the Family of Trayvon Martin” rally on school property, where the students would all wear hoodies with the hood up.
The Superintendent suspended her after hearing about what she wanted to do. She then came onto school grounds during her suspension to argue with the Superintendent, who claims she was insubordinate, so she was fired.
Still feel like the teacher isn’t getting her fair shake?

Let’s hear the teacher defend her decision to glorify a young man who plated his teeth in gold, and used gang slang to identify himself, and to communicate in public (Twitter). Trayvon was clearly an idiot working toward his first stint in jail for petty crimes. I wouldn’t want my 16 or 17 year old daughters participating in any of this nonsense, especially at a school-organized event.

Many colleges are forced to accept a certain “quota” when it comes to minorities – whether they qualify or not…like in the work force. However, I do know there are some who are really trying and are legitimate, etc. – great – but I think they are few and far between for the reasons you state. And it’s not only their own fault, it’s also the rest of us who have allowed this to happen with the public schools & liberalism taking over.

Over the years they have developed a sense of entitlement because the stay at the bottom. They have had the city of Detroit to themselves for decades now. Been there lately?? It’s a cesspool created and maintained by the black man. How is it the jews can survive amongst themselves but the black man can’t? What’s the real definition of black pride today?? Detroit? The things they should be most proud of they detest because it shows that some have a head on their shoulders to provide a safe, healthy, and prosperous life for themselves and family.

And amazingly in the three and onehalf years of the Obummer Administration all their graduating classes have been excepted into four year Colleges,Coincidense? Explain to me why this hasnt happened in the all white schools? Oya thats right ther is no all white schools!! Would that not be considered rasicst towards Whites by not letting them in their schools? Or is it because the whites would excell in their curriculum? The problem is that Blacks commit 2/3 of the crimes and cry racist at anyone saying anything about it and were TIRED of it!!I I would say that if your tired of hearing and seeing all the neg storys about blacks then you would be better off at Huff Post were they dont report the news they make it up.

They ALL have an undying devotion to Obozo. I show them proof that Obozo is a chronic liar. I tell them how he on one hand shuts down our oil drilling rigs in the gulf and then on the other hand endorses Brazil (with TAXPAYER) money to drill off shore in Brazil.
Report Post »They get upset… realize that’s a bad thing. I then say,”so are you still going to vote for the jackass?” (expecting a no) I get YES I’M GOING TO VOTE FOR HIM!! He’s going to fix everything. Upon hearing this, I walk away in complete disbelief. I‘ve come to the conclusion that the black guys I work with will vote for Obozo simply because he’s black. You should have to pass a test to be able to vote. It IS NOT A RIGHT to vote. My Aunt voted for Obozo because….wait for it…….He looks so handsome.
Another guy I work with (Jewish guy) told me at the start of the Republican debates that if Sarah Palin runs for President, I’m voting for Obama (again after telling the guy about the crap Obozo has done). He then asked me when we vote for President. I told him November 7th hehe.
