Teacher Involved in Slavery-Themed 3rd Grade Math Homework Quits

Update: Teacher Involved in Slavery Questions in 3rd Grade Math Homework Quits

A Georgia teacher involved in assigning third graders slavery-themed math homework has quit, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

The unidentified teacher resigned during a human resources investigation into the assignment handed out earlier this month at Beaver Ridge Elementary School, the newspaper reported. School officials said one teacher wrote the questions, which contained references to slaves picking cotton and getting beaten. It was used in four classrooms and meant as a cross-curricular activity to combine math problems with social studies lessons, the school district said.

One question asked, “Each tree had 56 oranges. If eight slaves pick them equally, then how much would each slave pick?” Another said, “If Frederick got two beatings per day, how many beatings did he get in one week?”

School district spokeswoman Sloan Roach confirmed the teacher quit during the course of the probe, which was completed Tuesday. It is unclear what the investigation’s findings were, Atlanta’s WSB-TV reported.

“The principal will move forward immediately to fill the vacancy created by this resignation,” Roach said in a statement. “As this is a personnel matter, the district will not elaborate further.”

Roach initially said there is a process to review assignments before they are handed out to students, which wasn’t followed in this case.

Last week, protesters called for the immediate firing of all teachers involved with the assignment.

In a separate statement to parents, school principal Jose DeJesus said he encourages teachers to create cross-curricular lessons with the expectation that they “be appropriate and provide true connection between the subject areas.”

“That did not occur in this case and we are working to ensure that this does not happen again and that this situation is handled appropriately,” DeJesus wrote.

It‘s not the first time there’s been controversy over a Georgia public school assignment: In September, a father complained after his middle school daughter was sent home with an assignment that he said promoted Shariah law.

Unfortunately, black folks who couldn’t see through the haze, are done. They now realize they’ve been taken down the river by the Democratic establishment. Used and discarded. The Mexicans are now the pride and joy of the libs. New blood to taint and sicken. The blacks can only now scream and kick, only to look foolish. The race card. What a tool. Used to instill a false hatred, a false sense of victimhood. The evil is in our government. Its goal is to reverse any progress towards unity. This country is finished. Soon to be unrecognizable. Soon a wasteland. Touché Barack, touché!

I’ve heard about these combined math/social questions all over the country. They actually give little kids nightmares. Questions like: If there are 12 people in a lifeboat (name different ethnicities/gender/class breakdowns/parents/single/kids/teenagers/etc) and it is sinking, which person do you think should jump into the ocean (or be pushed out) and die. Now explain why you are a horrible person.

Seriously – they go something like that!

This teachers stereotipical distortion of history is typical of the leftist mindset. This is an example of what teachers are taught while they are in public school. My family was and is white. I started picking cotton when I was ten years old. Poor people in the south found it necessary to pick cotton along side blacks, as a means to feed their families. One thing it did for me, was teach me there had to be better ways to survive. A large number of white people in the south hated slavery for two reasons, number one, they believed that no human should be a slave. Number two so called “free labor” depressed wages and opportunity for everyone. Unfortunately, today the slave owners are those in the Democrat party, the party who oppressed blacks from earliest southern history, and in their own way are oppresing blacks today, by having createrd a whole new “plantation”. Any black who attempts to escape that plantation, is considered a run- away by the left, and is not beaten or killed, but is demeaned as an “uncle Tom, and ridiculed. Please explain the difference between the slave owners of old, and the Democrats of today. I can see no difference, except with today’s media Democrats are able to spread their evil around the world. Anyone who votes Democrat, is supporting their “master”. Chains are chains, whether actual chains of economic chains. Those who are bound by either, are no longer free!

Very well put. Very few southerners owned slaves – too expensive. Also left out is that blacks owned other blacks (I believe on of the largest slave owners was a black woman) and even Indians owned slaves (I saw a very famous black entertainer have his geneology done with the results done live (show disappeared after this) and he knew he came from slaves. What gobsmacked him was that his ancestors owners were Indians – not happy! Wanted to HATE on the white man – but the white man had never done his family any harm! Tough pill to swallow for this racist black man!). But I sincerely believe that urban cities are the new plantations. Blacks who escape to the burbs are free and are generally conservative. Blacks in the cities are generationally doomed now. They can’t even get labor jobs – mexicans have all of those.

      @Bible…

all depends on where you live man…in some states the teachers get paid quite a bit, especially when you consider the 10 month work year, paid vacations, 7 hour work day, and full medical and retirement benefits.
and yes, don’t bring up the “my relative is a teacher and they never work 7 hours – they always bring stuff home..stay late..” yeah and so does every doctor, lawyer, and professional businessmen or engineer when there is a project to finish.

in CA teachers make 98% of what a professional with equal education and years on the job make. when you factor in retirement and other benefits, the teacher is ahead by about 10%. same in NY, WI, IL and a few other of the more “liberal” states out there where unions rule and the common man either follows them or suffers for it.
and before anyone else tries to bash the facts..
      1) my father is a teacher, in CA, for 34 years – mathematics and soccer coach. he just retired and makes MORE than he did when he worked, by $400/month.
      2) i was a CA teacher for 12 years before moving to TX.. in CA my medical benefits cost me half of what they do in TX, yet CA is and has been on the verge of bankruptcy for the last 4 years, TX is adding jobs and growing, even if not that fast.
      3) Teachers have one of the highest levels of disposable income in the USA.
      4) despite what they say, public don’t support or respect teachers – just look who gets blamed when little Johnny fails…the incompetent teacher

I have always thought (and I grew up while the civil rights thingy was happening) how great things were going to be to get all this stuff behind us. That within one generation it would be gone. I was WRONG!

They (liberals) have fed this angry victocrat crap in the preceeding generations. I now meet angry black people who HATE white people – and they have NEVER suffered a DAY of discrimination in their lives. I just can’t understand why they are so angry about things that have never happened to them.

I mean, I have ancestors that were persecuted and hunted down and killed for who they were – and it doesn’t touch me at all. I bear no grudge because it has never touched or shaped any part of my life. I just don’t get it.

When I first heard this story as it dripped out, the teacher and what she did, it seemed unreal
I thought it was a WHACKY PROGRESSIVE liberal teacher distorting things to show how guilty America was in its historical past. I have seen worst material down in ARIZONA where they encourage kids to revolt and protest.

Then the story changed, to where there was “outrage” over the actual language (in test) and the teacher was under scrutiny.

.THEN the LIBERALS, jumped on it, and PROGRESSIVES decided this was an aweful racist thing some right wing teacher was doing to thier students. PROMOTED endlessly.

Then, all of us AMERICANS were outraged as the story kept morphing into somthing really stupid.

PROGRESSIVES (yes Glenn, real live modern day PROGs on MSNBC) decided they would pounce on this with all 3 feet, ragging on the RIGHT, because they could not let it be known that had started this (my theory).

Well now, the teacher quits ( is she klliberal or conservative) without us knowing and all the blame is on the RIGHT?

Maybe she is just a goofy stupid te4acher who oid not know what was acceptable and was following orders without thinging it through?

She needs a class to understand if that is the case.

To me it looks like PROGS did this and got caught looking really bad, but it is in the south so some
racist teacher (really insensitive) coud have made really stupid mistake and it cost her her job.
If she thinks this was OK, whe should not be teaching.

The whole thing is incorrect in the first place. A “good slave” cost around $1000 – and that was in the 1800s. Very few people would be making scars on a thousand dollar “piece of property”, which would make “it” worth considerably less.

Of course, slavery was detestable but facts are facts.

If you going to do this sort of silliness then make it have a positive or constructive outcome that people feel good about.

Educators … the brightest, smartest people who we should pay top-dollar to so I can then live in near poverty with the privilege of them raising my child so that he grows-up to resent me and my ideas since the Federal Government has their agenda as to what my freedom, privacy and property should be in determining my happiness.

It reminds me of the Soviet Union, were there had to be a Marxist angle to everything. The was a communist way to teach Russian in classroom, a communist way to do art, a communist way to collect trash.
