Teacher‘s Union Offered Grant to Create ’Activists’ Out Of 1st & 2nd Graders

The National Education Association (NEA), the largest labor union in the country, offered a $5,000 Learning and Leadership Grant to two Wisconsin teachers who intended to use the funds to “help first and second grade students” become “activists.”

The description of the grant for teachers Andrea Burmesch and Tara Krueger of Muskego Elementary read:

Ms. Burmesch and a team of colleagues will develop a critical literacy inquiry based unit of study to help their first and second grade students understand the role that power plays in their lives. The teachers will learn how visual literacy and technology, particularly website and podcast development, can be used by students to create activist messages that make a positive difference in their lives and the lives of others. The students will create their messages around issues important to their lives.

The grant description is no longer available on the NEA Foundation website as Muskego-Norway Superintendent declined to accept the grant given its dubious language and intent. The following is a screenshot of the grant information while it was still available on NEA’s site:

National Education Association Grant to Muskego Elementary to Create First and Second Grade Student Activists

Muskego Patch adds:

Talk show host Mark Belling took up the issue, questioning the use of grant funds to make seven and eight year olds activists for the NEA.

Muskego-Norway Superintendent Joe Schroeder responded to an inquiry from Belling, and immediately “upon inspection, I found a description of the grant that, while rooted in the development of critical thinkers and positive community members, was described with some very concerning language.”

Schroeder said he had specific concerns over “helping first and second grade students ‘understand the role that power plays in their lives’ in effort to ‘create activist messages’ is language that, especially under the umbrella of a national union’s grant foundation, can understandably raise concern.”

He explained that those involved in the grant application process were spoken to, and Schroeder believed them “to be people of integrity who have a sincere interest in developing critical thinkers and positive, contributing members of our school and the larger community who were simply seeking additional funds in their service to students.”

Schroeder asserts that the teachers’ intent and meaning of “activism” differed from the obvious interpretation.

“I also told them that I believe the language of the grant description, especially within the context of a national union’s grant foundation, understandably can cloud their original intent. Upon review, they now understand that,” Schroeder added.

“To date, we have not collected one cent of this NEA grant — and will not do so.  I have contacted the NEA office that we are declining the grant and, therefore, are requesting that they remove our approved grant from their website,” he said.

But if a glance at the NEA’s “Activist’s Library” is any indication, this is not the last time we will see attempts from the union to indoctrinate children and turn them into “activists.” The following books, including one from none other than Saul Alinsky, are listed on NEA’s site:

Rules for Radicals
Saul Alinsky, Vintage Books, 1989
The classic book about organizing people, written by one of America’s foremost organizers.

Organize for Social Change
Midwest Academy Manual for Activists
Third Edition, Kim Bobo et al, Seven Locks Press, 2001
This is one of the best books about collective action and putting the screws to decision-makers. It’s about winning battles.

Building More Effective Unions
Paul Clark, Cornell University Press, 2000
Penn State Professor of Labor Studies Paul Clark applies the latest in behavioral sciences research to creating more effective unions. His insights are both astute and highly practical.

The Trajectory of Change: Activist Strategies for Social Change
Michael Albert, SouThend Press, 2002
Z Magazine’s Michael Albert has assembled a collection of thoughtful articles on ways to overcome various obstacles to social change.

Roots to Power: A Manual for Grassroots Organizing
Lee Staples, Praeger, 1984
This is a good nuts and bolts guide to organizing. It is especially good on recruiting, developing action plans, executing them, and dealing with counterattacks.

Taking Action: Working Together for Positive Change in Your Community
Elizabeth Amer, Self Counsel Press, 1992
Written by a Toronto community activist, this book is easy to read, full of examples, and sprinkled with how-to-advice.

Organizing: A Guide for Grassroots Leaders
Si Kahn, McGraw Hill, 1981, Revised 1991
This book is well organized. You can find relevant material for your situation without reading the whole book.

Ethical Ambition: Living a Life of Meaning and Worth
Derrick Bell, Bloomsbury, 2002
A gem of a book that delves into the question of “Why become an activist?” It is both thought-provoking and energizing.

Soul of a Citizen: Living with Conviction in a Cynical Time
Paul Rogat Loeb, St. Martins Press, 1999
Provides solace for the activist‘s soul and juice for the activist’s battery

Whoever hasn’t seen the movie “Waiting for Superman” needs to. ( http://www.americanparchment.com/video/2011/aug/waiting_for_superman.html )This really hits the nail on the head on what is happening in our education system. This education system isn’t working, mostly because of the unions. We need to learn from our mistakes and fix the system.

That Joe Schroeder is one conscientious Superintendent. But Burmesch and Krueger are still in the classroom. Their beliefs and intentions are the same — because they are just that: BELIEFS. Pray tell, what did they “need” $5,000 for? Next time they will just be more careful with the wording on their grant application.

Teachers! As you can see your reward money is out there. Go for it! Sign up for YOUR reward….uh…I mean “grant” today! Isn’t this church just GRAND!

Our kids in public schools dt even qualify as “functional idiots” because they aren’t being taught diddly squat by these union thugs!
Close down “public schools” completely. If parents want their kids educated they can pay for a private school. If they don’t they can pay a baby sitter. What we have does not work so we must change it.
The definition of maddness is to do the same thing over and over and expect different results. Are we insane?

      Shiroi Raion,
This has been going on for a very long time. I first discovered it in the 80′s when our children were in school.

Suggestions for parents to be on the watch for:
      1. “Pilot Programs” These are curriculms that are being “tested” to see how the children do in them. In other words, your child is a guinea pig.
      2. Be alert to all the familiar buzzwords associated with questionable pilot programs and established programs…and especially teaching manuals. A short list of words would be: FACILITATOR, problem solving by CONSENSUS, MENTORING programs for “at-risk peers”
3.Be aware of your rights as a parent. As a parent you have the right under the law to see all materials of a program’s curriculim including ALL teaching manuals for the instructor (or “facilitator”).
      4. Be prepared for your child’s school to look at you as a nutjob for having the audacity to even question them.
      5. Once you start investigating, be prepared to take any objections you may have to the school board

      Historyteacher,
Why shut down the public school system? Why not as parents and taxpayers hold the local school districts and their Boards of Education feet to the fire and demand they stop with all the communistic indoctrination via pilot programs and infiltration of consensus global thought? I know that to do this would take dedication and lots of research on the part of the parents. But aren’t our children worth it? Isn’t the future worth it?

This is nuts! Where is the average taxpayer? Too busy trying to work and make ends meet to pay for this craziness,no doubt. We have to pay attention! Not just content, but are we being flat out stolen from?
I just found out that our local school district-operating in the red, by the way, is a slush fund for the administration(high school football buddies-ALL) Curiously, our Plausible Deniability(once called the School Board) paid the state superintendents assoc. $10,000 to help us FIND a new superintendent – and this guy is a local, known by all of these people and we PAID some outside group to find him. $10,000 is a lot in our neck of the woods. & what’s more his contract is for 5 years at $150,000 a year and then his pension begins for life at $130,000 with cost of living increases. We are in the vipers nest. Our test scores are awful, and they “can’t” improve anything. That’s the pat answer, my last response- HOMESCHOOL! We are and I actually LIKE my pre-teen. Imagine, no heavy duty attitude! Abolish public sector unions!

Well known that schools are the root of this societies ills. Kids have been used for more than 100 years as “the mules of socialism”. It does work, sticks to a lot of them and all you need to do is look in the streets to see their handiwork, we call them liberals. Strange how I have heard of no lawsuits against the unions by outraged parents for this brainwashing of young kids. It‘s a good thing that some of them are free thinkers and it doesn’t stick and we call them conservatives.

Radicals do things in strange but quite an effective way in schools. Take the attack on religion, a calculated assault on religion knowing the attention it will get, at the same time jamming socialism down the kids throats while your busy paying attention to religion. Radicals always tandem their assaults so you are not paying attention to the real attack. Always watch the other hand.

The way to combat it is to be involved…ask questions of your child: “What did you learn today?” and LISTEN. Ask more questions, “You learned about American Indians? Really? What did you learn?” My 12 year old is being taught that Christopher Columbus slautered thousands of Indians….technically correct as they had never been around European diseases, caught them, and died, but the spin is terrible. I make sure I teach the RIGHT history. At least when they learned about the Mexican independence, they weren’t forced to recite the Mexican pledge and sing the Mexican national anthem.

All I can say is — TALK WITH YOUR KIDS !!!

Ask them what they talked about at school, don’t press them, get into a casual conversation, always look through their papers when they come home, see what types of handouts and worksheets they’ve gotten and see if they are being brainwashed and indoctrinated…

If you do find something, talk with your neighbors and your kids friends parents, gather up a group then all of you go to the school TOGETHER — don’t go alone, go as a group, show strength in numbers and very mannerly and sternly (keep voices and hands down) tell the principle very straight forward – remove this stuff from your school or you will pull your child out and send them to private school (even if you don’t mean it, just say it – bluff and get everyone together on the same page) and let them know – stop poisoning your kids minds or you will remove your children and file a complaint with the local superintendent and your local Congress district Representative — push back, the school is beholden to your local community and it is YOUR right and YOUR choice what is taught to your children, NOT theirs…..

Most time small children cannot articulate exactly what went on in the classroom. This is why parents need to take the time and go into the school THEMSELVES and see the teaching materials and the Teacher’s teaching manuals.
Sadly, most do not want to take the time required to do this because it would require taking off from work. It is very time consuming. But it end result is worth it. These are the people who will be running our country someday.

Being the Foster Parent of a 2nd grade and having raised 4 of our own – there is no such thing as “critical thinking” – so the teachers just proved they are dumbasses for even suggesting such thing and are too stupid to be teachers period!

“Critical thinking” has always been code for Marxism.

Really good point, linking critical thinking and marxism. We pulled our 4 kids out of our supposedly conservative public schools last year and it is time for all conservatives to do the same. I am frustrated that all the school voucher proponents mention is violent and failing schools, which are a problem but only for a minority of schools, but worse is that the majority of kids in America are being indoctrinated right under our noses.

Critical Thinking courses are how educators tear down values and core principles that parents have taught their children. First you must create confusion in order to establish the doctrine of choice. Hence the reason why it is the fist course of any college education.

Liberals and Muslims. Never trust them. Never enter into any type of treaty or mutual agreement of any kind with them. Keep them away from your children. Keep them away from your schools. Keep them away from your wallets. Never help allow them to be in a position which gives them authority to make decisions that affect your life. They will always betray your trust, and always work to undermine you and take what you have, no matter how firm their handshake, how white their teeth or how nice their smile.

Lol, I just finished reading “A Tale of Two Cities,” so that statement was a little scary….but I do agree. This has gotten so out of hand with the children and the schools. If you go to the AFL-CIO site, they have even more radical books aimed at getting young kids involved in activism. Just look at the OWS crowd, scary stuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlIS6gRq32Q

Agreed – and also consider this list as well..
add or comment if more or less is needed.

      Dept of Education,
      NEA
      EPA
      TSA
      Homeland Security
      Department of Energy
Curtail Unions by a national law rather than the state by state struggles.

Eliminate ALL of Obama’s executive orders
      Scratch the Healthcare bill.
