Teamsters Union Threatens to Cut Off Ohio’s Budweiser Supply

More than 300 delivery drivers and warehouse workers employed by Heidelberg Distributing, one of the country’s largest beer wholesalers, have reportedly been putting up informational pickets at key distribution facilities throughout Ohio to protest the company’s labor policies. And if workers‘ demands aren’t met, Ohio’s beer and wine supply is in threat of running at least partially dry this busy summer season.
The Teamsters have reportedly launched billboards around the Dayton area stating “Tell Budweiser: Destroying Ohio Jobs is Tasteless.” The union’s official press release featured on PR Newswire stated:
“The last thing we want is a strike, but Heidelberg management just continues to back our members into a corner,” said Varney Richmond, President of Teamsters Local 957. The Local represents more than 100 delivery drivers and warehouse workers at Heidelberg’s Dayton-area distribution center, which distributes Anheuser Busch products including Budweiser.
“Heidelberg is trying to walk away from its obligation to provide health care to retirees and force employees to accept a substandard contract compared to Coke, Pepsi and Miller distributors in the area,” Richmond said. “Our members have shown a willingness to take on cost-saving measures when management has pointed to legitimate issues. However, in this case the company cannot justify its changes.”
And reports indicate Heidelberg’s local conflict might extend to other collective bargaining agreements in place for more than 300 additional Heidelberg employees at four other Ohio distribution centers. The result could be a widespread labor dispute in the state. The Teamsters’ press release continued:
“Despite enormous profits and sales, management is seeking drastic cuts from these workers,” said Greg Nowak, Teamsters International Representative for the union’s Beverage Conference. “If Heidelberg wants to wage war on workers, the company is going to have to answer to all of its employees and the communities that support its business.”
Another union battle might have just kicked off.

Samuel Adams? I would hope you mean the Founding Father and not the sods… though the brew is amongst better choices… if I drank beer, which I do not. I’d rather flirt with a dark Morgan. I have sampled many cans, bottles and drafts. Non have ever gained my purchase. Bud, the young always seem to favor and those who only race to a cheap buzz, willing to disregard flavor. With age and taste, Bud is left for the trash, is what I see.
I spent a few years paying dues to the Teamsters, not enough to make it count. Even served as shift lead, for a while. I have been told, as an insider, some members will do anything for the cause. I was assured it don’t take much… most of the time.. just a little mischief in the middle of the night gets most, right where they live. That was up Ohio way too. Thank God I never have deal with those thugs again. It is time for America to grow up. Stand on your own two feet strong on personal righteousness. Don’t be a card full of disgrace, in need of discard.
Samuel Adams never liked any form of collectivism driven towards Utopian nonsense. Unionism would not be his cup of tea. It is just another form of tyranny, the kind that drove Sam to independent party, up there that Boston way. Freedom ain‘t no union yoke that’s gots a bull’s manners.

They are mere delivery drivers. If the drivers feel they are under paid, get a better job. I and many other drivers left our tractor trailers behind and sought higher pay in other fields. Posted on July 27, 2011 at 8:21amI can believe this. You see the unions have blinded many of their members that into believing that they deserve these benefits and larger salary. These members are like sheep and have stopped thinking for themselves to realize that they are replaceable. The unions will get violent if they are replaced, and I say lock them up, and do whatever is necessary to put a stop at that behavior.
Unions need to realize that the overly high salaries, benefits until death, and money for life is no longer viable for companies. If our stock market crashes there will be no money for pensions, as all pensions are tied to the stock market. Pensions aren’t a pile of cash earning interest, they are money invested in the stock market whose value ebs and flows with the rise and fall of the stock market.
Union members and all citizens need to wise up. Pensions that last until death are a thing of the past. One can‘t put in much less than they take out and think that it’s going to last forever. Pensions will become non-existent if stock markets crash, which in my humble opinion is likely if things remain as they are in our country.

Posted on July 27, 2011 at 12:35amThere are plenty of people looking for work….many more than willing to drive the trucks for you. I bet if you were to fire all the union guys, you would have more than enough to drive and work the warehouse.

Posted on July 27, 2011 at 12:29amThat cuts it. This is about to go too darn far!! My Dad was a Bud guy, I am & my son enjoys a frosty one from time to time. Do not screw with the Budweiser! Okay that whole argument was lame….. Truth is unions have outlived their usefulness. The only people who truly benefit from a union in America are those in the union hierarchy.

Posted on July 27, 2011 at 6:41amMany years ago in Illinois Budweizer drivers went on strike two times within a year. Our bar sales of Bud went from #1 to none, dropped them on tap and put on Miller. From then on no one drank Bud anymore. worked real well for the union:)

Posted on July 28, 2011 at 8:51pmI drink Bud and I’ve been a Teamster for over 30 years. We have a distribution ctr. in Merrimack, NH. not too far from were I live. I’m not sure what effect it will have here if they decide to strike but I can tell you being a member of local 633 in Manchester, NH. They don‘t give a rat’s ass about their members except for the dues money every month. It seems the only time we see our BA is at contract time every three years. I just hope the NH house votes for the right to work act because in my opinion they are useless. It passed the house but not by enough to over ride Gov. Lynch’s veto.
Report Post »It’s going to come up for another vote hopefuly with enough votes this time. I think if you want to be in the union fine but it should be your choice. PERIOD
