TechCrunch: The Search For God Is Tough With Google Instant

I’m not sure what was going on at TechCrunch that they felt a sudden need to get information on God.  I‘m guessing it wasn’t sudden pangs of conscience triggered by the 8/28 rally. But we applaud their search! And the search, it turns out, turned up something curious:

When you try to do a search for “God” with the new Google Instant feature, it predicts that you’re going to type in “Godaddy” instead. If you hit a space after the “d”, it thinks you’re looking for “God of War”, the popular videogame. So the only way to actually search for “God” with this new Google Instant feature is to hit the search button.

TechCrunch: The Search For God Is Tough With Google Instant

I’m pretty sure TechCrunch is followed by the folks at Google. So I wondered if they had done any theological tweaking of the algorithm in the wake of the post.  Here’s my test:

The answer is no — they didn’t. “Godaddy” reigns. There are technological reasons for all of this:

To make Google Instant work, the search giant looks across all queries to find the most popular ones and then predicts what it thinks you’re going to type and auto-populates the results based on that. Clearly, both “Godaddy” and “God of War” are more popular queries on Google — something that is either humorous or sad depending on your level of religiousness.

I did persevere. I fully typed “God.” I hit space. I ignored the autofills of “God of War” options. I hit return and got actual search results for God.  Atheists will be encouraged that the number three results is “God is Imaginary.”

Technology, as a root of ‘science’ is determined to ‘prove’ that they are (little ‘g’) god. And everything they do either consciously or unconsciously is a derivative of that faith only in their own abilities or explanations.
I have worked in the field of science for over 30 years and have seen it first hand from incredibly talented and highly educated men and women all the way up the corporate ladder. The more educated one becomes, as a general rule of thumb, the less one believes in anything beyond ones own self and the more childish one behaves.

Great post. Disappointing. Disconcerting. Annoying. Frustrating, but a great post. So the only way we can be a virtuous people is to remain uneducated? Is it, “The more educated one becomes…the less one believes in anything beyond one’s own self…” or is it that all of our educational institutions are filled with Godless people who are teaching their students that there cannot be a God? Knowing how group dynamics are and, at age 18 when you enter college, and you still do not think for yourself. (Just speaking anecdotally of myself and my peers that I knew.) Always wanting to be accepted, please the teacher, and look up to these people who call themselves the educated. Educators are notoriously hostile to God as well as the institutions who give them a venue to spew their views. Common-sense Americans have ceded all of the centers of influence in our country to progressives. The education system being one of the largest. If you want to change a country in a generation, you go after the kids. One of the things we must do, is to re-enter the centers of influence such as education, government, and business. But let’s face it, we have become soft in the middle. Progressives bully anyone who tries to enter what they deem is their sphere. And we common-sense Americans, rather than fight, just walk away because it is easier. It looks like the easy way has led us straight to the hard way. This is my first comment and as I suspected, I have pulled it out to a bigger subject. Sorry for being long-winded!

Incidently my husband just tried “God” in Google instant and “god” was choice number two. Godaddy number one. Maybe it changed because everyone is trying it now?

In all honesty the problem is not with google. They simply use their technology to determine the most popular searches. The problem is people in general losing interest in knowing God and seeking truth.

Seek him and ye shall find. We that know of his grace do not need to go to Google to find him. We can only pray that those searching Google for him discover his love. To my agnostic friends, if you had discovered something wonderful, would you not like to share it with everyone? Do not mistake the gift they are trying to bestow as anything other than wanting to share a glorious gift.
As far as Google, it is a non story. Come on Blaze! Don’t make me regret making you my homepage…

i don’t believe the universe had a definite BEGINNING. it always HAS BEEN and always WILL BE. it is infinite, kind of like what christians claim god to be – except the universe isn’t a sentient self-conscious being.

really folks. people have ALWAYS needed a way to ‘explain the unexplainable’ (miracles, anyone? anyone?) so they started out with the controlling things in our lives. sun, earth, moon, fire, water, etc as a way to explain things that go ‘bump in the night’ they didn’t understand.

then one day someone realized that if people could be talked into believing in something GREATER than them, then they would be afraid of ‘it’ – and so, the religious concepts of salvation and damnation were born as a way to control the masses.

as glenn likes to say – READ YOUR HISTORY. except the Christian version of biblical ‘history’ places the entire universe at around 5,000 years old. go figure.

we could go on and on – but i’d rather not – i‘m not here to convince you that i’m right. i’m just here for the conservative bent on the events of the day. belief can be a powerful thing.

Man obviously wants an explanation for why things happen, and we have always asked people we think are smarter than us for the answer. From the Animists through Scientologists. Why not just accept that in the case of why the universe exists we may never know. Scientists may not be able to get past more than their theories, and there is no way on earth that we can verify that a god has created it. So sit back, keep an open mind and enjoy the ride. Either way, we die in the end!

The reason it autofills to godaddy is that there’s an actual location on this series of tubes “godaddy.com”. It will pull up locations with your querry, then topics. So, if you go back and look at the illustration with what actually get pulls up….you’ll notice that after godaddy (a location), God is the first topic on the list. After god was typed, a space was entered after the user typed in god and it autofilled to god of war. The reason: When you search you typically type in what you’re searching and click enter (or go). If someone was searching for god, they wouldn’t type in god…then hit space…then hit enter. When you type in a topic to search and then hit the space bar, you’ll notice it will then generate autofull searches. If you want to learn about God on the internet: type in “God” and click enter (or go…or whatever), just as you would when you search for anything else.

“god” is a generic word and Google is non-case specific, so it’s really a lost search. If you really wanted to find out any information, a more subjective search would be “Yahweh” “Elohim” or “Tetragrammaton” if you’re looking for the Creator of the Universe, that is.

      LJ:

I have no idea what you’re trying to say by throwing out a handful of verses from an English translation.

I can only assume at this point that you are trying to prove the word “God” or LORD appears throughout the Scriptures. If this isn‘t what you’re trying to get at, my apologies in advance. With what you’ve provided, and again, I assume here to chastise me, you have “God Almighty” and “Almighty God” quoted: Which one is His Name?

If so inclined to choose between the two, you must also believe that 2,000 years ago the folks in Israel walked around and greeted some guy named “Jesus Christ.”

      – Truth is, you’re reading a misrepresentation conspired thousands of years ago to remove the Hebrew from every page, passage and word you read.
The interpreters changed every Hebrew name in the entire New Testament to a Roman ones (with the exception of the figures of the Old Testament, which was why they had to reprint them all). Also, “Christ” isn’t a last name, it’s a Greek word to replace “Moschiach” (the English word Messiah).

If you find that hard to believe, consider this: the first printing of the Book of Acts had Stephen say that Jesus lead Israel into the Promised Land instead of Joshua. This error was due to a complete removal of the name “Yeshua” (which is an actual Hebrew name still used today) from the New Testament, and is a real, Proper name of the person you call “Jesus” erroneously.

      Enjoy.

Again, there is no conspiracy here. There are simply more people searching on GoDaddy and God of War right now than just “God”.

Google is in the business of returning relevant and timely results. That is why Google is the #1 search engine right now, they return relevant and timely results better than any other search engine, hence, people use them because they return what they’re really looking for.

If you do a quick search, you‘ll see that GoDaddy just announce they’re selling out, therefore, every finance and money person in the world is searching on GoDaddy info. Sure, there are probably some people looking for the GoDaddy “girls”, but what is eclipsing the searches right now is the financial news related to GoDaddy… nothing more. It’s not a commentary on society or anything, it’s just TIMELY financial news.

As far as God of War… well, there’s just a LOT of gamers searching on God of War cheats, tips, etc, every minute of every day, and since Google is in the business of returning RELEVANT results, then it’s appropriate that Google returns God of War results because lots of people want to see those results!

No, freid. Assuming you are not just being antagonistic, the “revelation” to Mohammed is NOT correct. Just Satan’s attempt to mirror and thwart the One and Only God. But, that is a lesson you will have to study and properly research for yourself. There are only so many things a person is willing to die for. Of course, the disciples and early apostles did not quite understand when Jesus walked with them but every one suffered and, ultimately, died for their belief in Jesus. The details may vary on the suffering or death but no doubt they all did. I’ll give you a prominent, learned theologian’s account…….

      Matthew – killed by sword
Mark – dragged by horses to his death
Simon Peter – crucified upside down
James – thrown off the temple and clubbed to death
James (son of Zebedee) – beheaded
      Bartholomew – whipped to death
      Andrew – crucified
      Thomas – stabbed by spear
Jude – killed by numerous arrows
      Matthias – stoned and beheaded
      Paul – beheaded
      Luke – hanged
John – boiled in oil but lived. Exiled to the prison island of Patmos where he died after giving the “Revelation”

Speaking of Revelation, if you study it as well as Ezekiel, you will find the accuracy of God’s word in what would occur in end times. Which, by the way, is feeling eerily like the present times.

Copatriats, many of the Muslim believers are willing to die for their beliefs. This doesn’t prove that their revelation is true any more than anything else. Neither does it prove that they are influenced by Satan. Perhaps by humans, possibly.

During the time of Jesus many Jews were looking for a messiah to deliver them from their bondage under the roman regime. Most thought this would be a military leader. However, perhaps much of what we see as Christianity today was significantly influenced by the path Saul took after his conversion, as well as the introduction of Christianity within the empire by Constantine. Otherwise we may have had a different version if other branches of the Christian tree held sway. See for example the debates between Arius and Athanasius at Nicaea in 325, or the earlier Marcionites. So revelation is only part of the picture.

      Friedenker,

You missed the point of the suffering of the disciples. They didn’t understand while Jesus walked with them who He was. It was after his return through, as reflected in the Book of Acts, that they were willing to die for their belief that He is the Christ. What belief are you willing to suffer and die for? Are you willing to suffer and die for any of your friends who come up with an insane story such as what the disciples believed?

And, you have to ask yourself, why did Mohammed (via Satan) come up with the exact antithesis of the the Bible approximately 600 years later? Wouldn’t he have come up with his own original version of events? Satan knows how the world will end the same as we should because God told John the Revelator. Satan actually believes God means what he says.

There were “pictures” of God with this article (or whatever an existential version of the being would look like to an individual) but you don’t see thousands of Christians or Jews rioting around the world. Sad that there seem to be very few believers who “defend’ their beliefs to the rest of the internet. I had already experienced that phenomena in the God search arena. Looks like some secular “lions” have hijacked the internet for their “atheist beliefs” (and yes that is an oxymoron)

I‘m sure it’s just growing pains… any NEW human-driven news aggregator has to figure out their niche. TheBlaze will figure out their place in the world over time. Right now, they’re probably just grasping at anything that will get some views… that’s how they all start.

What annoys me is that what they‘re doing isn’t so much news, as it is a sort of lame version of Drudge right now. Drudge just points to other news, and that’s what TheBlaze is doing right now… there is no original news happening here… it’s just links to other sources.

So if that’s what TheBlaze is, is just a pointer, then call it that… a news human-edited news aggregator. But don’t call it “news”, because there’s no original reporting going on here.

Give them time… they’ll find their niche in a few months.

You see, Lori, the point is that there’s no “Journalism” going on here. Beck’s Blaze “editors” are not journalists… my guess is that they have Google Alerts set up for various popular search phrases that are relevant to Beck’s message, and they are probably subscribed to a bunch of other relevant news feeds, and then they just create a story and plop a link to the real story.

This is just a news aggregator. What I’d like to see is some actual commentary (by the editors, not the readers). That would actually make it more like news. I’m getting a little bored with just links to videos all the time. Mix it up with some more text (at least some text summaries!)

Might drop TheBlaze off the RSS reader if they don’t figure out their niche soon.

I would guess with that as a start, they hope to do more Huffpo than Dudge in the long run. If not, it will always be a spot to direct Beck fans for something written (or prefaced) more with the truth than with a Progressive agenda.

mr.butcher is on the ground of reason here.

religion has evolved just like any other part of humanity. ever notice that around 10,000 years ago people were worshiping FIRE and the SUN as sentient, judgmental beings?

as another atheist who appreciates CONSERVATIVE views on many issues, I can truthfully admit to NOT knowing ‘everything’. (OMG!)

just because i don’t believe in a god (christian or otherwise) doesn‘t mean i automatically ’assume’ that i am 100% correct about EVERYTHING in the known universe. yet many christians have the arrogance to believe they are the only correct ones, and to condemn ME for MY beliefs. is that right? is that “righteous”? i wouldn’t think that Jesus would think so.

it also doesn‘t mean i can’t be ultimately wrong about the whole God thing. but i BELIEVE with all of MY FAITH, that I am right, based on what I have learned with the application of reason to my experiences and knowledge gained so far in life. so, i will take my chances and roll the dice on ‘eternal damnation’.

furthermore, i don‘t go around mashing MY BELIEFS in people’s faces, and think it is wrong of anyone to do so. christians have tried many times to ‘convince’ me that i am going to ‘hell’ in ‘eternal damnation. I just can‘t buy into the belief that there’s this ‘omnipotent, invisible being’ who created the entire universe and sits in judgment on us in life. the universe always has been and always will be, in one form or another.

you believe what YOU want. I’ll take my path in life.

In reply to MRBUTCHER and any other atheists and agnostics out there. Check out Pascal’s wager. I quote. God is, or He is not” But to which side shall we incline? Reason can decide nothing here. There is an infinite chaos which separated us. A game is being played at the extremity of this infinite distance where heads or tails will turn up… Which will you choose then? Let us see. Since you must choose, let us see which interests you least. You have two things to lowe, the true and teh good; and two things to stake, your reason and your will, your knowledge and your happiness; and your nature has two things to shun, error and misery. Your reason is no more shocked in choosing one rather than the other, since you must of necessity choose… But your happiness? Let us weigh the gain and the loss in wagering that God is… If you gain, you gain all; if you lose, you lose nothing. Wager, then without hesitation that He is.”

In summary in case you didn’t follow the quote. Believe in God because to not believe has no benefit but only potential loss.

You say that as if discovering something transformative (which may include psychological and emotional comfort ((hope even)), is somehow a bad thing. If that is true, why? One of the major problems with atheism is its reductionism, ergo the self is everything, which is a limitation. Atheism is at its best, a clean sort of Zen, and at its worst, solipsistic, narcissistic, and uninspired. Really not worthy of a truly evolved human brain that is capable of contemplating far more than the Void or the individual ego. To know God, you have to do the work and invite him/her/it, into your life. If you can’t even try that experiment, that’s too bad. A good scientist would give it a try.

@Bendit – If Man created God, who created man? And please don’t say “it happened by accident”. As far as I know, no one has been able to scientifically explian how life began. Why is believing in a creator so bad? It seems (logically) that believing in a creator is a humble stance – whereas believing we (humans) are the “end all be all” is a bit arrogant. No?

      @ CACJON

If god created Man, then who created god?

We know a great deal about the beginning of life, but of course any discussion regarding this will lead right into the cosmological argument where some believe that it is logical to say that god must have been the first cause. My response to that argument is who made god? The variety of answers to this question such as “he always existed, he’s eternal, alpha omega, etc…” My response to that line of reasoning is why can’t the universe and existence itself have these characteristics?

Believing that there is an omnipotent god who set up this world just for us, listens to our prayers, and whose image we are made after seems hardly humble at all. Not believing this does not mean you consider humans the “end all be all.” We are just one of many life forms floating around on a planet that is hardly a spec of dust when compared to the vast universe. No one or thing cares for us, and we could be wiped out at any moment leaving no trace.
