Ted Nugent Agrees to Plead Guilty in Illegal Kill of Black Bear in Alaska

(The Blaze/AP) — Rocker Ted Nugent has agreed to plead guilty to transporting a black bear he illegally killed in southeast Alaska back in May of 2009.
As part of the plea deal, Nugent must pay a $10,000 fine, not hunt or fish within Alaska or on any other U.S. Forest Service lands for one year, record a Public Service Announcement, and serve two years probation.
CNN reports that the public service announcement, “must be approved by federal prosecutors in Alaska, must be at least 30 to 60 seconds in length, and be broadcast every second week on his television show for one 12-month period.
“This PSA will discuss the importance of a hunter’s responsibility in knowing the rules and regulations of the hunting activities that they engage in, which is subject to the review and final approval, prior to any broadcast, by a representative of the United States Attorney’s Office in the District of Alaska,” the agreement states.
Nugent seemingly wounded a bear with a bow and arrow just days after bagging another bear, and Alaska law limits licensed hunters to one bear per hunting season.
Nugent made the admission in signing a plea agreement with federal prosecutors that was filed Friday in U.S. District Court, soon after he was questioned and cleared by the Secret Service over comments that he would be “dead or in jail” if Obama got re-elected.
However, Nugent’s attorney maintains that his client was unaware of the law– which was introduced less than five years ago. He says he even watched video of the shot, and the arrow supposedly only “touched” the bear before sinking into the ground.
“There wasn’t any blood trail that they could find,” he said. “There was a little blood apparently at the spot, but nothing that indicated the bear was hard hit.”
Nugent is seemingly in good spirits despite the controversy he has been involved in recently, saying his meeting with the Secret Service could not have gone better.
“I thanked them for their service,” he said, “we shook hands and went about our business. God bless the good federal agents wherever they may be.”
However, some are wondering why an offense from 2009 is being brought up at this particular time.
Is it, some ask, part of a coordinated effort to silence the rock star? Or is it just coincidence?

Posted on April 21, 2012 at 6:34pmHaving lived and hunted in Alaska from 1982 to 2007 I can tell everyone that the fish and game regulations in that state are IMPOSSIBLE!! The handout book for hunters is over 200 pages and just because it‘s legal on one side of the creek or ridge doesn’t make it legal on the other. If you live outside the cities you get preferred treatment over those who live in town. Anyone who hunts or fishes can be busted for something if a game warden cares to make an issue. The whole thing is an impossible mess!
For someone from out of state they need a game guide in addition to the surveyor to let you know where you are and the Lawyer to interpret the regulations.

Report Post »I agree. In WV, the hunting regulations effectively read that having a weapon in hand save for when WV DNR allows is a crime. I challenge any interpretation that asserts the regulations read otherwise. I’ve never met a jackboot WV DNR officer… but that doesn‘t mean they’re not out there. U.S. Forest Rangers seem to be pretty gungho and adversarial… best to hunt on private land if possible. Fishing regulations are just as dictatorial… and it seems here in WV, that seems to be where the most focus on law enforcement is.
Your best recourse in my state is to be a land owner or to know one who will allow you to hunt on private property. You’re usually left alone. However, it is a well-known fact that WV DNR is allowed an extremely low expectation with regard to probable cause in this state.
Hunt to live if you must, live to hunt if you can. I respect and follow hunting laws to the extent I reasonably can. Hopefully, that will be enough.

Are they saying the first bear he got was illegal? I don’t mean to sound stupid, but the article says there was no blood trail to follow and his lawyer says the arrow “touched” the bear and may have been a small amount of blood. That doesn’t add up to transporting a dead bear illegally to me. It does add up to Obummer tactics to me though. One way or the other, I stand with Ted, he is a great American and should be honored for the things he does for our vets and others. God Bless him.

Lets hope the first one you shot does not miss as you can not shot another one later. Or you have to make sure after days of tracking the one you missed is the one you finally get.
It is still semi good over reach as it is does prevent poaching of someone taking as many bears as they can find and then bears in the area are gone forever Re: wolves of Yellowstone.

I also know, and you should too, that this has little to do with McCarthy. His activities as such contributed absolutely nothing to the uncovering of Communists in government or anywhere else. By the time he appeared on the scene in 1950, most such people had already been dealt with. Some of the names he named were in fact Communists, and very likely traitors, but my point is, he himself simply glommed on to lists already compiled by others and used them for personal and partisan advantage. As an outspoken celebrity who is at odds with the current administration, Nugent needs to make sure he follows every regulation that concerns him personally. The administration does not like criticism at all and there are a lot of members, particularly Obama, who have a very thin skin and will not blink at swiftly “punishing their enemies”.

4 lbs. bear meat
2 cloves garlic
1/2 chunk of salt pork
1 c. black coffee
Rub meat with plenty of salt (celery salt is preferable) and black pepper. Place in kettle with plenty of water and salt pork, garlic and black coffee. Boil until tender. Remove to roaster, add more salt and pepper and cover with plenty of sliced onions.
Roast in 350 degree oven until brown. Use liquid boiled in for basting and making gravy. For those who do not desired the “wild taste” in bear meat, boil for about 10 minutes in soda water – 1 tablespoon soda to 2 quarts of water – drain and the meat is ready for cooking or preserving
…Bear, its whats for dinner!!
