Teen Atheist Behind Prayer Mural Ban Wants Contentious WWI & WWII Cross Removed

Jessica Ahlquist, the 16-year-old behind the prayer mural ban at Cranston High School West in Cranston, Rhode Island, just can’t seem to keep her name out of the news.

Months after she won her ACLU-led battle, the teenager continues to receive both attention — and threats. While she’s been quiet over the past few weeks regarding her take on atheist demands that a WWI and WWII monument in front of a Woonsocket, Rhode Island, firehouse, be removed, she’s finally speaking out.

(Related: Teen Atheist Behind Prayer Mural Ban Threatened with Rape: ‘We Will Get You — Look Out!’)

Ahlquist, who was initially accused by some of having involvement in her state’s latest battle between atheists, believers and pro-military families, has consistently denied playing a role in the spat. But on Tuesday, she posted a message on her Twitter account that, at the least, clears up her views on the Christ-inspired memorial.

She wrote, “This should settle some of the confusion around the Woonsocket memorial controversy. I now support its removal.” Along with her message, she shared a link to a blog post purporting to republish an old article about the monument’s initial dedication in the 1920s.

Teen Atheist Jessica Ahlquist Supports Removing Woonsocket Cross | Rhode IslandThere’s no clear indication why she posted a link to the blog, CautionChurchAhead.com, but in sharing her views on the matter, she has certainly opened herself up to further criticism. Ahlquist’s tweet means that she is joining the chorus of atheists who view the cross as a form of discrimination being waged against them.

As previously reported, the Christian cross, which was built in Woonsocket back in 1921, is causing a great deal of angst among secularists who stand firmly opposed to its presence on public property. Taking on even more significance beyond WWI, the monument was re-dedicated back in 1952 to honor three fallen WWII soldiers who lived in the area and has since been a public statement of remembrance.

In a April 13 letter sent from the FFRF to Leo Fontaine, the city’s mayor, FFRF staff attorney Rebecca Markert called the presence of the cross “unconstitutional” and claimed that a concerned citizen made the group aware of its presence.

Supporters of the monument, though, are fighting back and defying the request. Earlier this month, more than 1,000 people assembled in support of the religious symbol and the veterans it represents. The city of Woonsocket, too, has setup a war memorial fund to collect monies if, indeed, a legal battle ensues.

i know what will make every Christian happy. let’s replace the Bald Eagle with the Cross as the US official symbol. maybe we can put a cross on top of the White House. and while we’re at it, replace “in God we trust” with “in Jesus we trust”. after all, we’re a Christian Nation, right? RIGHT???

As a Christian (that is, someone that tries to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ) I will attempt to enlighten you. It’s actually very simple and is probably very close to what you want. We simply want to be left alone to worship and believe according to the dictates of our concience. I don‘t care what you do or don’t believe in, if you believe in anything at all. It’s only when atheists (a small minority of the American population, by the way) decides that they are offended by something that has stood for, in this case, 91 years that Christians take issue. That memorial wasn’t an issue untill it was “brought to someones attention”. I can think of no other group of people that are more thin-skinned than atheists, who take offense or exception to all things Christian. @Philly

“i know what will make every Christian happy.”

It would make this Christian unhappy. We’re a nation founded by Christians that incorporated many Christian principles in our foundation. But we are secular when it comes to public office and government. While I would be far more worried seeing Islamic symbols above our public buildings, I’d still be uncomfortable with ANY overtly religious symbols, even Christian ones. Lord knows I don’t agree with many people who call themselves Christians but have obviously never read the Bible!

That said, the monument debate is pretty lousy. A cross has often been symbolized as a memorial marker and I can understand it in that regard in this case.

But as always, while I think this girl is a busybody, anyone threatening her, bullying her, or insulting her is NOT acting like Christ and shames the Christian title. I‘m sure it’ll happen anyway, and I apologize for those who count themselves among our ranks as Christians but behave like savages.

Well in case you have read the Constitution and your ignorance suggest just that allow me to enlighten.
Congress shall make NO LAW respecting the establishment of religion or PROHIBIT THE FREE EXERCISE THERE OF. Now notice the capitilized part. Now you atheist seem to want aquaint everything public with the drafter of the constitutions intent. Well that means the school is part of Congress within your logic. That being fact THEN YOU CAN VERY WELL USE THE ESTABLISHMENT CLAUSE TO PROHIBIT VIA COURTS . AS THE ESTABLISHMENT CLAUSE DENYS THE GOVERNMENT OF THE POWER TO PROHIBIT THE FREEDOM OF RELIGION. And more over the majority of school funds are collect via property taxes in the area surrounding the school. That actually removes CONGRESS as part of the school system.
And as for the not you can’t statement. If push comes to shove Christians can do what they want through the power of voting alone. Or through the power of communitys orginizing. If we all united and got behind anything say PRAYER IN SCHOOL we could ram it down the court’s throats with no recourse for them to follow. It just takes one push too far to get the unstoppable object go into motion.

as for your feeling that if Christians banned together on an issue they could make it so – i disagree once again. if you were right, we’d still have prayer in public schools. the majority of Americans (Christians) want it, but someone it is not so. why? the Supreme Court has ruled in un-Constitutional. get the right justices in place and maybe you’d win.

This goes far beyond simply removing religious symbols (it can be argued the cross itself actually predates Christianity to some pagan belief systems, and in original text if translated Jesus may have been hung on a ‘post’, which was traditional roman punishment of that type)…

This is also an attack on history, and history of the commemoration of the American soldiers… This is an attack on history of the way people chose to commemorate soldiers…

Don’t people realize that the Cross is probably one of the most common commemorative symbols used during WW1 and WW2 (and probably long before) to honor soldiers throughout the world? Infact in Arlington alone there are at least two crosses for WW1 the Argonne Cross, and the Canadian Cross of Sacrifice, that use the cross symbology…

Separation of church and state” is a common metaphor that is well recognized. Equally well recognized is the metaphorical meaning of the church staying out of the state‘s business and the state staying out of the church’s business. Because of the very common usage of the “separation of church and state phrase,” most people incorrectly think the phrase is in the constitution. The phrase “wall of separation between the church and the state” was originally coined by Thomas Jefferson in a letter to the Danbury Baptists on January 1, 1802. His purpose in this letter was to assuage the fears of the Danbury, Connecticut Baptists, and so he told them that this wall had been erected to protect them. The metaphor was used exclusively to keep the state out of the church’s business, not to keep the church out of the state’s business.

The constitution states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Both the free exercise clause and the establishment clause place restrictions on the government concerning laws they pass or interfering with religion. No restrictions are placed on religions except perhaps that a religious denomination cannot become the state religion.

      @Johnjamison

“These issue were meant to be decide by the communities these buildings represent not by the LAW.”

If you agree with judicial review, claiming that their rulings are unconstitutional is inherently contradictory and illogical. If the SCotUS is the arbiter of constitutionality (and it has been for over 200 years), then Joe Shmoe on the street is dead wrong in claiming what you’ve claimed.

I would hope if this goes to court that the court would rule sensibly: that the cross might be a Christian symbol, but it is also a common grave marker and memorial symbol and as such does not constitute an endorsement of religion. Of course if there’s a plaque or something making reference to religion then that argument is likely moot. I haven’t read anything on it, but usually there seems to be some sort of dedication and if they included a cross, the dedication would likely contain religious elements as well.

I think what would make every Christian happy is to simply ignore you and your attempts to remove important and respected (by the majority) expressions of our faith and honor for our countries protectors, no doubt some of which were themselves atheists.

Adding this 16yr old programmed drone to your cause merely adds one more person to ignore. The problem isn‘t what YOU believe or don’t believe. You have that right in this country. The problem is giving credence to your beliefs by paying attention to you. I could care less one way or another whether you have a belief in a religion or a spiritual Deity. So therefore I choose to ignore you. After a while, when you realize no one is giving you the attention you so sorely need, you’ll go away. Like a baby that isn’t coddled or picked every time it cries. Eventually it will stop.

The problem with this country is that we are now so gutless that we allow the tail to wag the dog.

@ PhillyAtheist and Encinom If you’re absolutely intent on “separation of church and state” then you need to demand that the Liberty Bell be taken down. It is, after all, inscribed with part of a Bible verse:

“Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof.” Lev. 25:10

Want proof that this country wass built on Christian values ok here you go.Emblazoned over the Speaker of the House in the US Capitol are the words “In God We Trust.”
The Supreme Court building built in the 1930′s has carvings of Moses and the Ten Commandments.
God is mentioned in stone all over Washington D.C., on its monuments and buildings.
As a nation, we have celebrated Christmas to commemorate the Savior’s birth for centuries.
Oaths in courtrooms have invoked God from the beginning.
The founding fathers often quoted the Bible in their writings.
Every president that has given an inaugural address has mentioned God in that speech.
Prayers have been said at the swearing in of each president.
Each president was sworn in on the Bible, saying the words, “So help me God.”
      Our national anthem mentions God.
The liberty bell has a Bible verse engraved on it.
The original constitution of all 50 states mentions God.
Chaplains have been in the public payroll from the very beginning.
Our nations birth certificate, the Declaration of Independence, mentions God four times.
The Bible was used as a textbook in the schools

      @John

      Some verses for you:
“Any one who claims to be in the light, but hates his brother is still in the darkness.” 1 John 2:9
“Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him.” 1 John 3:15

Jesus’s own words. No, hating this girl and torturing her (psychologically or physically) is not in any way Christian. As for spreading rumors about her?

Leviticus 19:16 – “Do not go about spreading slander among your people. Do not do anything that endangers your neighbor’s life.”
Romans 1:29 – “They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips.”
Matthew 7:12 – “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”
Ephesians 4:29 – “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”

Would you like to encourage any more sin and claim it to be Christian? Would you like to show your hatred any more, for as Proverbs 18:8 says “The words of gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man’s inmost parts.” We know you by your words, Johnjamison. You’re not following Christ when you write here.

Simple solution–sell the memorial to a private entity–church, historical society, etc. They pay for it, maintain it and the city gets a few $ in the till. Then all the atheists who are truly forcing their religion on the citizens of the US and just grin and bear it! But don’t worry, they will come out with some other legal maneuver to force us to ‘convert’! Also, freedom of religion means the ability to practice it publically. What they are doing is infringing on that right. Whereas having a cross or other religious symbol in a public square does not force anyone to do anything but see it.

“The Supreme Court building built in the 1930′s has carvings of Moses and the Ten Commandments.”

were we founded in the 20th Century?

      “Our national anthem mentions God.”

      no, it doesn’t.

“Our nations birth certificate, the Declaration of Independence, mentions God four times.”

actually, it refers to: Nature’s God, Creator, and Divine Providence. there is no reference to a Christian God. only a reference to a Deistic being.

“As a nation, we have celebrated Christmas to commemorate the Savior’s birth for centuries.”

we also celebrate the Pagan holiday of Halloween, and the Socialist holiday called Labor Day. your point is?

“The founding fathers often quoted the Bible in their writings.”

the important Founders spent more time criticizing Religion and the Bible. Jefferson, Adams, Washington, and Franklin were most certainly not Christians.

The current implied meaning of the “Separation of Church and State” metaphor and its use is just the opposite of what was intended and what historical facts justify. Our framers feared a state denominational church based upon European history. The constitutional restrictions were targeted at our government to prevent it from making a denominational religion the state church. We actually embraced the Christian Theism doctrinal religion as the state religion. Now we are rejecting any expression or symbol of our doctrinal religion, which our framers embraced. We are treating the doctrinal religion of our heritage like a virus that must be expunged from the public square. We also have inverted the original intent of the “Separation of Church and State” metaphor. The oppression that the Christian Theism religion is now undergoing through the ACLU and activist judges is the same evil that the establishment clause in our constitution was intended to prevent. Our current state religion of humanism is using the full power of the government to oppress the nonconformists to its doctrine, which is exactly the opposite doctrine of Christian Theism.

But let me bring it closer to home and the here and now.

Obama’s Czar of Science John Holdren..a secularist who places little value on mankind, a global warming alarmist (well to be fair..in the 1970′s he was a global cooling alarmist) and denizen of leftist academia writes in his book “Ecoscience”:

“All the children who are born, beyond what would be required to keep up the population to a desired level, must necessarily perish, unless room be made for them by the death of grown persons.”
We know what that looks like right now. It has been official policy in Communist China for years. But of course..this is an American official and secularist uttering these words.

Here’s another gem from secularist Johnny: “Such a comprehensive Planetary Regime could control the development, administration, conservation, and distribution of all natural resources, renewable or nonrenewable…The Planetary Regime might be given responsibility for determining the optimum population for the world”

As a matter of fact, we ARE a Christian nation. Overwhelmingly. Far more of the population of this Country call themselves Christian than any other faith or, in your case, lack thereof. Like or not, this Nation WAS founded on Judeo-Christian values and beliefs, and you can look at virtually any of our Founding Fathers writings, including The Declaration of Independance, to the Federalist and Anti-Federalist papers and even their personal letters will tell you, if you have the courage to read them, that they were guided by God in setting up this Republic. If you don’t like it, go move to a Country founded by Atheists. As to the story at hand. Once again I’m having to point out that tolerating the mere existence of something DOES NOT automatically constitute endorsement of it. I tolerate the Mosque down the road and the fat lady in spandex, but I certainly don’t endorse them. Not to mention that it’s absolutely the job of Government(at any level) to erect(on Gov. land) and maintain monuments to our fallen Vets. And, whether you like it or not, if those Vets happen to be Christian, it’s entirely appropriate for that monument to bear the sign of the Cross. Once again, existence does not imply endorsement!!!!!!

If you don’t believe in God or any deity, then why are you so afraid of a symbol of something that means absolutely nothing to you other than two perpendicular sticks? There is no mention of ‘separation of church and state” anywhere in the consitution. The first amendment was written so that the government could not create a “state religion” that everyone must follow (like the British Church of England), and it protects everyone’s right to freely express their beliefs. Well, the cross in Woonsocket, RI, was erected to honor a veteran of WWI who was a Roman Catholic, and three more names were added after WWII, those of whome were also Roman Catholic. That cross is the free expression of the religion of the men who are honored by it and as such is “free expression of religion”. Just because it is on public land does not make it illegal, nor does it violate the constitution.
As far as Jessica Ahlquist is concerned, the “prayer” that she gained her 15 minutes of fame from was totally non-denominational and the person who wrote it specifically worded to be that way. You could have removed “Heavenly Father” from the top and not consider it a prayer.

All this controversy is a violation of the majority’s right to free expression of their beliefs. Just because you don‘t believe in any higher power does not give you any rights to infringe upon others’ freedoms. If every religious reference were wiped out, I consider that a violation of MY rights.

The original design for the Great Seal of the United States was Moses leading the Jews out of Egypt. This design was proposed by the so called Atheist Founding Fathers, Franklin & Jefferson. The Seal that is currently used makes reference to God. The motto above the all Seeing Eye, “Annuit Coeptis” is translated to mean, having favored of our endeavors. But who has favored our endeavors? The quote, in conjunction with the all Seeing Eye is more accurately translated to: Providence has favored our endevors. So, us Christians don’t need to replace the eagle with the anything. Just flip the seal over, and you’ll have a reminder as to Who is in charge.

I know that this will make every atheist happy.

Let’s replace the American flag with the hammer and sickle.

ALL Communist nations and the Communist Manifesto, embrace atheism as a fundamental building block for their murderous schemes.

“Communism has been the greatest social engineering experiment we have ever seen.
It failed utterly and in doing so it killed over 100,000,000 men, women, and children, not to mention the near 30,000,000 of its subjects that died in its often aggressive wars and the rebellions it provoked.
But there is a larger lesson to be learned from this horrendous sacrifice to one ideology. That is that no one can be trusted with power. The more power the center has to impose the beliefs of an ideological or religious elite or impose the whims of a dictator, the more likely human lives are to be sacrificed. This is but one reason, but perhaps the most important one, for fostering liberal democracy. ”

That should make all Atheist happy… RIGHT?

Let’s reframe the issue. You want to quash other people’s faith and symbology, because your beliefs tell you it’s wrong. Atheism is a faith. It’s a faith in cosmic chance. If Atheism were treated(as it should be) as a loose association of individuals who share a similar faith and belief system(a Church), than all of these removals are a violation of the Constitution. It is promoting one faith church(faith) over all others. I don’t understand why when Atheists scream about the separation of Church and State they forget what Church means. It’s not a building, it’s a group of likeminded associates who share a common belief. By this traditional definition, Atheism is as much a church as any major faith. If not more so. Christians, Jews and Muslims disagree and fracture over minor issues of faith, while most atheists share far more of the beliefs. So do you support the classification of Atheism as a church(and all that comes with it) or not?

My goal is less government control; the Taliban’s, Nazis‘ and the Democrats’ goal is more government control. You have a problem with the definition of fascist. I got a better idea, for all those who don’t wish to live under a Judeo-Christian government that was founded on those same moral principles, move to Canada or Mexico.

Atheist are as bad as the illegals. You attempt to change what the majority of the population supports.

The United States can be all things to all people, where is your tolerance for Christianity. We don’t place atheist in the town hall in shackles and throw spoiled food at you. Why can’t you sit in the same room or walk into a building with a Christian symbol.

In a court of law will you swear on the Holy Bible to tell the truth the whole truth so help you God?

Christians continue to tolerate the criminals, the deviants, the Godless, the profane and of course those who wish to change our country. You simple little atheist can’t stand to sit in a room with the Ten Commandments on the wall. How tolerant are you?

If you are an atheist and don’t believe in God how are these writings and symbols offensive to you.

Would a copy of Harry Potter be offensive? It’s just a book, a fictional book. So these Commandments and these verses and symbols should be no more offensive to an atheist than a Harry Potter book. How can you be offended by something you don’t believe exist.

That’s the same as being afraid of the boogeyman.

Of course when it comes to Christianity, God is your boogeyman.

      @Rebelpatriot

Some clarifications, and this coming from a Christian:

“Atheist are as bad as the illegals. You attempt to change what the majority of the population supports.”

An odd comparison. The US has always changed, and often for the better. The majority’s will does not trump the Constitution, but if enough want a change then an amendment can be passed. Until then, the intent of the establishment clause is a separation of church and state. It’s a fact, jack.

“Where is your tolerance for Christianity. We don’t place atheist in the town hall in shackles and throw spoiled food at you.”

By your own reasoning, shouldn‘t it be enough that Christians aren’t clapped in chains and abused? Why are religious symbols needed?

“In a court of law will you swear on the Holy Bible to tell the truth the whole truth so help you God?”

This is a lie. You do not need to swear upon a Bible; you can use another symbol or holy book, or just make an affirmation.

“If you are an atheist and don’t believe in God how are these writings and symbols offensive to you. How can you be offended by something you don’t believe exist.”

Turn this around and try it. If you believe atheists are wrong and God exists, why do we need symbols to support this view? How can you be offended by others believing something you don’t (or not believing in something you do), and then turn around and accuse them of the fault? Logically you need to accept you’re hypocritical.

“What being Christian is about is trying chose the right paths in life.”

I completely agree. But you’re willing choosing a path Jesus himself says is wrong. I‘m not trying to tell you you’re damned, but I do think I need to point out that nothing about bullying or gossiping about someone is Christian in any way.

“As for your bibical quotes, Like all Christians I tried to turn the other cheek and all I got was two swollen cheeks. I’ve come to the conclusion that at some point you have to fight fire with fire and that time has arrived.”

I disagree. Christ had the power of God; he could have crushed the Romans and struck down the nonbelievers. Fight fire with fire? There’s no fire that burns brighter than the wrath of the Lord.

But he turned his cheek, and died for it. And the result was that Heaven was opened to us all and we can attain eternal life. “Fight fire with fire” is not a Christian teaching, and does much more to reinforce the view of Christians being petty bigots than it does to prove this girl is misguided.

Here’s an idea: pray for her in your own time. Disagree with her views if confronted. And condemn those who would do her harm for failing to live up to the faith they so piously claim to follow. Lead by example, not by anger.

Bitter and brat-like atheists always make it easy for us to make our point about them- they open their mouths (or Tweet).

It’s not about their atheism- a religion in itself- it is about their hate, disdain, and bitterness toward a specific religion- Christianity.

Think about it- we are talking about a WWI and WWII memorial here. With violence plaguing the streets, poverty, a government that is, literally, driving us further from freedom into a nanny state, and what do these people have a passion for? Taking crosses down. (I am now holding the letter “L” symbol over my head- “LOSERS”)

It’s easy to demonize a religion that, at it’s center, says turn your cheek and pray for your enemy.

IT takes a lot more “faith” to be an ATHEIST, doesn’t it. I mean, you believe that we came from a major Explosion (but no one knows where the material(s) that exploded came from or who/what caused the explosion…and that after the explosion, things stopped and yet ‘kept moving’ – evolving so that we have red heads and blonds and spiders and trees and that men and women come in various sizes, colors etc.
YET, you can’t explain basic things like FINGERPRINTS, EYES and you have no explanation for LOVE. Love isn’t necessary to procreate of course. YOU cannot explain evil, anger either. Your explosion-but-it-stopped theory is childish nonsense. Just because you can wrap your head around the obvious: Creation, doesn’t mean it cannot exist.
and…instead of developing your own “symbol” to be placed in the public arena like our Crosses, you want (like a little child would) to remove everything.

First PhillyAtheist, let me say that I truly pity you. You have so much hatred for something you claim not to believe in. In fact most atheists I know talk about God more than Christians do! I don’t understand that.

As an example, I don‘t believe in UFO’s, however, I don’t make fun of those that do, nor do I go to blogs and websites about UFO’s and belittle those people, call them names, try to remove them from any ability to participate in their hobbies, etc.

But atheists are OBSESSED with God!! Makes no sense at all, except this is what I think the issue is. Deep down inside you KNOW you are wrong, dead wrong. That little tiny mustard seed of doubt in you makes so full of hate, that you have to continue with your obsession of God.

See, no matter whether YOU personally do believe in God or you do not, does not mean He does not exist. You are free to live your life without believing in God, you are free to speak out against Him if you must, but you have absolutely NO RIGHT to remove God from this country. No matter what you think or whether you like it or not, America was founded as a Christian nation.

We need to pray for you and this child who is full of the same hatred for God and His people, because no matter how wrong and how blasphemous you are, God still loves you. But even though God is a God of Love, He is also a God of Judgment and you WILL stand before Him one day, whether you believe in His existence or not.

I can’t remember who said what exactly, but there are some severe misconceptions. First off it is an attack. There shall be no law prohibiting religion either. So when you pass a law that says you can’t put a cross on a memorial then you have established a law that is prohibiting religion. Second religion and that which is learned from scriptures is for personal gain. It instructs us how to behave, not how to make other behave. After, and during which it also specifically (and makes no bones about) tells us NOT to judge others. The establishment clause in the first amendment is not meant to remove religion from from laws, but to remove laws from religion. Why this is such a difficult concept for people to grab hold of is beyond me. Just comparing the two as written in the previous sentence should show how the one would be benefical and the other not. ALL morality is based from religion/faith/belief based concepts, WITHOUT EXCEPTION. Anyone who says otherwise has a bit more reading to do. This girl is getting attention on a national level, she likes it, she is getting an early taste of power. Wouldn’t matter now what happened, she will follow on that course. Anyone that would like to disagree I will maintain a twenty dollar bet that in ten years I will collect on. The cross should stay.

Someone in here said that it offends 1/4 of the people it starts to cause a problem, or something like that. BS, in a free country you have the right to offend me and I have the right to be offended. If it deprives me of life, liberty, or property THEN and ONLY then is there a problem. A cross on a memorial deprives me of nothing. If you put one in my yard, Then your cross is depriving me of property space (regardless of how small), and liberty (as I must now use time to remove that which you have installed). On public property a cross represents those who may believe in it. If you believe in something else, put that up. If you don’t put nothing up. But respect others ability to do the same. If you feel picked on, grow up, get yourself some self confidence. You obviously are lacking.

go for it. If this makes you happy, then so be it. This is a country of laws, so follow the law or change it as you need so you can put a cross in all these federal places. The issue is with local (State) locations that for some time put up these items and for 50 plus years had no complaint until now. They are local and not federal, but you can with some effort change the law so crosses can be put up in all the federal places you want. By the way, this should not be too hard since money (printed by federal government) has “in God we trust” placed on it.

Anything less would be a violation of what this country was founded upon. The founding fathers wouldn’t have had it any other way. They believed in it and practiced it. What I want to know is why that when people believe in something you have to turn around and attack it. It would take you less energy to walk your butt on by and say nothing than make a huge deal about it. Most christians offer knowledge and that is all. you are not made by the state to practice any specific religion. during this particular time in history in the U.S. it was the main religion of the men and women whom died so you could be free. If you can’t RESPECT that, then walk the other way.

Supporters of the Cross might consider buying the small piece of property that the monument rests upon so it wouldn’t be considered public property. That’s what is happening with the Mojave Cross incident in California. The Mojave Cross was stolen but may soon be replaced if and when the VFW, I believe, buys the said property that the Cross rested upon.

You are right to say that we are not a majority rules country. We have courts to protect us from laws that beat up the little guy. We are also not a country built on unanimous consensus.

That being said, one person does not have the right to dictate to others what the rule should be.

The courts should consider both sides of the argument and make a decision. If you are on the losing side, accept the decision and move on.

The problem lies in the interpretation of the law. Some see that we should be protected from any religious influence in the government. Others read it to mean that we are protected from any government influence on religion.

I happen to agree with the latter, some are in favor of the former.

Many escaped Europe and England in particular to escape the single Church Of England which is now the Episcopal Church. See, this country even allowed the church that had even persecuted many of those responsible for establishing this country. You are relying on the 1964 SCOTUS case that established an albeit twisted outcome that has now become legal president. That much I can’t deny, but only until we get the right case in a future Supreme Court. Any violation of the Constitution should have true patriots offended. It is clear that the Christian Facist care little for the Constitution, wasn’t that Christian, W., that said it was only a God Damn piece of paper, and desire a theocracy in place of the Republic.

Why not just sell the spot to the memorial organization (create it if not already there) and then it is on private property.

Hey, she is entitled to support whatever she wants. It is still a free country.

However, sweetie in your ignorance, you are trampling on other peoples right. You think because you want it gone that everyone has to cow-tow to your whinings and wishes. Sorry, sweetie your trophy days are over.

Those who are threatening this young girl, STOP IT!

No reason to threaten her, as most liberals like her, get off on the victim mentality. It’d be nice to ignore this shrew, but alas she has lawyered up. I do wonder who is funding the FFRF. There can’t be that many atheist philanthropists. Odd, as those philanthropists seem to hate some men, when a philanthropist is supposed to be a lover of all men….. Christians can be hated, apparently.

although, seeing who Rhode Island’s Governor, Senators and Congresscritters are, I am shocked this didn’t happen sooner.

Thank you for your statement. If we take the high ground we have more of a chance of making our point. Threatening a 16 year old is not the high ground.

What don’t these pathetic people understand about the 1st Ammendment? It is not freedom FROM religion. It was intended that the government cannot PROSCRIBE a specific religion.
Why do they think they must push their anti-God religion on the rest of us?
This is sad and demoralizing, which is what I think they are attempting. If they can get enough of us to be demoralized, then they will win the battle over the soul of our country. We must not give up. Fight them tooth and nail so that we can maintain a positive spiritual influence in this country. If the believers are squelched, there will not be enough people with good values to save this country.

People like this would be classified as “religiphobic”. There is also the famous “heterophobic” and the ever popular “conserviphobic”. See, I can “lable” too! Good old Saul would be so pleased, we are picking up his techniques!

What on earth does this little troublemaker hope to accomplish, besides getting her and her family in EVEN MORE hot water than before?

Why not just wait til the last WWII or any veterans in your town move or die, then remove the cross? Is that OK, sweetie?

    Little brat.

I will help her pack, and purchase her a ticket to Iran. I believe they share her views there and she will feel right at home.

What she has taken such advantage of here in the US (freedom of religion and speech), would be her down fall in other places around the world. She would regret she ever opened her yapper over in the ME. While she kneels in her Burka awaiting the first stone to strike, for not conforming to Sharia Law, and for being an infidel and WOMAN! And, definitely letting sleeping dogs lie.
I can guarantee, she’d turn to Islam so fast your head would spin, if confronted with the option to conform or die. Where as Christians would fight and stand their ground, believing in Divine Providence of God Almighty.
