Teen atheist Jessica Ahlquist may continue to face threats over her efforts to remove a prayer banner from her high school, but the 16-year-old darling of the secular movement has been showered with accolades from fellow non-believers. Ahlquist has already received tens of thousands of dollars in scholarship money and now, as a result of her activism, she’s being given a coveted “humanist” award.

The teen atheist will accept the Humanist Pioneer award next week at the American Humanist Association’s (AHA) 71st Annual Conference in New Orleans. The event, which goes from June 7 to June 10, will help to further drive home the AHA’s goal — ”to bring about a progressive society where being good without gods is an accepted way to live life.”

Not much is written about Ahlquist‘s past accomplishments on the AHA’s web site beyond the fact that she was the plaintiff in the Ahlquist v. Cranston court case. This legal battle, as previously reported, led to a judge‘s order that Cranston High School West remove a prayer mural present in the teen’s Rhode Island public school.
(Related: Teen Atheist Behind Prayer Mural Ban Wants Contentious WWI & WWII Cross Removed)
Ahlquist will be honored along with another student, Damon Fowler, who challenged his high school over a graduation prayer. In 2011, Fowler was given a student activist award from the Freedom From Religion Foundation.

The two teenaged activists aren‘t the only individuals who will be awarded at this year’s event. Famed feminist Gloria Steinem will be given the “Humanist of the Year” award. A biography on the conference’s web site goes on to praise the controversial figure’s career. On the media front, Cenk Uygur, host of “The Young Turks,“ will receive the ”Humanist Media Award.” Other recipients can be seen on the AHA’s conference web site.
This year’s theme for the AHA conference is, “The Atheists Go Marching In.”

It’s gibberish because you do not know the intellectual foundations of your espoused belief system. Atheists confuse the adjective “empirical” that describes the scope of the scientific method with “epistemic empiricism”. The theory of knowledge that said a proposition is only meaningful in some way if it is empirically evidenced. As there is no empirical evidence for that proposition it is self refuting which means it is a formal logical contradiction violating the Principle of Non-Contradiction. In case you still don’t get it I will spell it out for you.
You cannot claim that you do not believe in G-d because you do not have physical or observational evidence. Science is not an excuse for atheism.
That stroke alone tears the heart out of atheism. Done deal. Game over. Atheism utterly destroyed merely by exposing a long known epistemic fact.

Posted on May 30, 2012 at 9:59pmWell said warpspeed.
Island, knowledge can come from one of three sources: emperical evidence (as warpspeed pointed out), logical deduction, or divine revelation. Atheists reject the latter and only accept as valid logical deductions that agree with their preconceived notions. That leaves emperical evidence, which as speedy pointed out, does not support the atheists’ claims.
There are perfectly valid reasons to accept the existence of a Creator.

Thank you. The Sword of Contradiction is a powerful tool. I have found that demonstrating the epistemic contradiction that lies at the base of the new atheism is great fun. It’s also an excellent way to dispel the contrived notion that atheists are more rational than theists. When atheists refuse to recognize the contradiction and change their epistemology to modern standards it seems to be grounds to claim that atheism is not held as a rational belief but as an emotive one.

Posted on May 31, 2012 at 10:41amI’m not an atheist. . . .more agnostic, personally.
However, I think I can understand why the atheist doesn’t see it as a legitimate contradiction. True, without proper evidence to show that “a god does NOT exist”, you can’t make a claim from experimentation or personal evidence and it be “rock solid”. However, for the atheist, it is still their “best game in town” to reject the claims of “a god exists” for which those claiming it have no experimental evidence, . . . and considering that personal experience can be effected by outside stimulation.
As for me, I would never be so arrogant as to make a definite “no god[dess]” claim. However, I have yet to find anything compelling to “just choose a religion” based upon other people’s pleading. My brain doesn’t operate that way. . . . and needs more than someone saying “I know that I know that I know it is true”.

We believe that a child’s qualities are to be emulated: teachable, willing to submit to the Father, not clouded by adult biases, looking at things in wonder and amazement, quick to forgive, loving of others without prejudices.

If a child comes and tells you that they have an imaginary friend, as a believer you have NO right to think that it’s not possible. Because after all, we have to “become like children.”

But as an Atheist how can you say anything is actually good or evil and by what right?
@Mod and Enicom:
Nothing warms my heart more than seeing non-believers purposefully skew the scriptures and then ignore other verses at the same time.
Here’s a little something from 1 Corinthians 14:20, I use a few different translations to make it easier to understand.
“Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults.”
“Dear brothers and sisters, don’t be childish in your understanding of these things. Be innocent as babies when it comes to evil, but be mature in understanding matters of this kind.”

What you athiests don’t get is that you will not be judged against your christian contemporaries. You will be judged against Christ Himself. I believe you will be found lacking just like we christians would be. The difference is when a christian is judged, God will not see us, He will see His Son instead. He offers that gift to you also.
The very nature of what this girl is doing is satanic and against God. She does not wish us well. She wishes for our destruction whether she realizes it or not. A persons religion is a personal matter – it could be called an opinion – and as such, we need to recognize that we may be wrong.

The Conversion of Saul
Report Post »9 Now [a]Saul, still breathing [b]threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest, 2 and asked for letters from him to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, both men and women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. 3 As he was traveling, it happened that he was approaching Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him; 4 and he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” 5 And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” And He said, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting, 6 but get up and enter the city, and it will be told you what you must do.” 7 The men who traveled with him stood speechless, hearing the [c]voice but seeing no one. 8 Saul got up from the ground, and though his eyes were open, he [d]could see nothing; and leading him by the hand, they brought him into Damascus. 9 And he was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank.

Posted on May 30, 2012 at 12:14pmSo Git, you concur with God’s judgement that these two would deserve to burn forever in eternal torture? That is why I say God is worse than Hitler. Hitler may have killed millions but that was only temporary. How much worse does eternal torture for tens of billions stack up against Hitler’s crimes?

Hitler forced people into the death camps. Hell is the result of personal choices just like prison is.

Posted on May 30, 2012 at 3:31pmPetey. . . WRONG. It can never be a truly personal choice when one side is completely absent and thousands of OTHER religions are telling you that THEY are right. Only a sadist would put someone through that.

Posted on May 30, 2012 at 8:46pmAlso, God, ostensibly according to Christian myth, drowned the WHOLE PLANET accept ONE FAMILY and a SINGLE pair of every species he wanted to preserve. Now with the slightest knowledge of biology that’s PATENTLY ABSURD…BUT, let‘s just SAY that it’s true–doesn’t THAT make God more evil than Hitler? Hitler killed several million, few if any for good reasons, but God killed UNFATHOMABLE numbers of people AT RANDOM, not just not for good reasons or for bad reasons, but for NO REASON AT ALL. In fact, when Noah (supposedly) ASKED God about this VERY thing, God’s response was more-or-less “acceptable losses” (the consideration certainly didn’t STOP God from, purportedly, drowning all life one Earth save Noah et al., and you’ve got to imagine there must have been SOME babies and pregnant women down there, so obviously God can’t be THAT opposed to abortion).
Yeah–if the God of Christianity IS real, then Satan clearly had the right idea and the appropriate reaction to the CHARACTER attributed to God time and time again in God’s depictions throughout Christian scripture.

1. Implying that our understanding of biology precludes the Flood commits the Fallacy of Incredulity. Our ability to understand the mechanism of action has no bearing on the possibility or likelihood of any event.
2. By implying that G-d has not met a moral standard you admit that there is an moral standard that should be met. If that moral standard is based on your opinion than G-d’s opinion is as valid as yours. So you would have no right to claim that G-d was acting immorally. If that moral standard is based on some authority, as the Creator there is no higher authority than G-d . Making His actions moral by definition. Again giving you no right to claim that G-d acted immorally.
3. You have created a straw man to serve as the subject of your argument instead of the actual G-d we worship. By saying G-d has not met a moral standard you imply that you are morally superior to G-d. Yet G-d as Actus Purus necessarily has all perfections. Making it impossible for G-d to be inferior to anything else. Thus your concept of G-d assumes a quality of imperfection that G-d cannot have.
Your argument here is based on logical fallacies.

Posted on May 31, 2012 at 11:51amThere are imperfections to the biblical god that can be found if you look in the right places. I found them, so anyone is capable to find them, too.
[In other words, don't ask me to show what you are capable of finding with due diligence.]
