Teen Girl Survives 220 ft Plunge Off Golden Gate Bridge

SAN FRANCISCO (The Blaze/AP) — Officials say a 16-year-old girl has survived a fall from San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge — a plunge they are reluctant to call a suicide attempt.
The Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard say the girl was in the water for 20 minutes Sunday before being pulled to safety conscious and responsive.
She was transported to Marin General Hospital but her condition wasn’t immediately available.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that it’s not known if the girl jumped or fell.
Officials say about 25 people per year die in jumps from the bridge, roughly 200 feet above the water. And according to the Daily Mail, “around 1,400 people have leapt from the bridge since it opened in 1937, and 98 per cent of them have died. Only a handful have ever walked again.”
The Mail also says a person already in the water kept the girl afloat.
In March, a 17-year-old boy survived after leaping from the bridge. Officials don’t believe it was a suicide attempt.

Read “The Survivor’s Club.” If I’m not mistaken, the book opens with a young man intent on committing suicide off of the G.G. Bridge. I can’t do it justice. There were so many variables that worked to save this man, it’s staggering.

Posted on April 18, 2011 at 3:07pmI used to jump off of bridges as a teenager but 200 ft is somewhat excessive. I don’t think I ever jumped more than 70 ft. It’s a rush but even at about 40 feet the water pressure gets under your shorts and splits the seams up to the waste.

By the time I pulled into my driveway about 15 minutes later, the news came. A mother, with her infant in her arms, and jumped, both dying… I’ve never been able to see it, or drive over the bridge since without that memory haunting me.

My uncle committed suicide last year. I can’t imagine feeling so hopeless, that you have absolutely nothing to live for and suicide is the only answer. People that contemplate or attempt suicide are deeply disturbed and need help, and to be shown that there is something that they can hold on to and hope for. What they don’t need is ridicule.

How many tax $ were used to rescue these morons after they jumped and had to be taken to the hospital and the following investigation. I’d stick them with the bill for the whole ordeal. If you look at all the suffering people are going through right now, losing their jobs, houses, unable to get a job or even pay for the gas to get there, and these clowns pile on the expenses by either playing around and falling or trying to kill themselves. Personal responsibility is a thing of the past as the mantra now is “it’s somebody else fault”. Not to mention how we all have to be politically correct in what we say cause you don’t want to hurt anybodies feelings by telling them what an idiot they really are. We are really sliding down the slide of stupidity fast. Sickening.
