Teenager Shoots LAPD Chopper, Forcing it to Make ‘Crippled’ Landing

Teenager Shoots LAPD Chopper, Forcing it to Make Crippled Landing

(Photo: CBS)

An LA police department helicopter took heavy fire from a disgruntled teenager Sunday. And when one of the bullets from the boy’s rifle connected, the chopper was forced to make an emergency, ‘crippled’ landing at a local airport:

CBSLosAngeles.com reports:

The pilot managed to land the crippled chopper at Van Nuys Airport.

Danny Lopez, 18, was shooting a firearm because he was distraught over the death of a friend, according to police.

Lopez was tackled by his family and subsequently arrested for attempted murder of a police officer.

No one was injured.

Depends on the rifle. It could have been quite powerful. A larger caliber Browning or Marlin rifle (say a 30-06 or 30-30 or one of the common hi-velocity hunting rounds) can take down an aircraft with relative ease if the aircraft is low & slow enough (like a low flying police chopper doing a ground search) to be hit.

Remember, early WW2 British fighters like the Hurricane and Spitfire carried .303-caliber MGs and shot down armored Nazi fighters like the Bf-109 Messerschmidt and bombers like the Heinkel He-111 and Junkers JU-88.

I have thought for many years that it was foolish for police to use civilian-type un-armored helicopters. Anyone with an AK47 or other rifle of medium to high caliber can turn a low-flying un-armored helo into Swiss cheese.

This is not a California thing or LA thing. This is a crime of convenience. He’s distraught and angry as hell with the powers that be, and a police chopper just happens to come flying within gun range. Actually surprised stuff like that hasn’t happened more. But the more ongoing wars on cable, the more these blatant attempts seam feasible. Choppers & planes need to be ready to strategize. You never know when this administration will plant another saboteur to push anti-gun laws.
