Teenager Who Once Wowed Conservatives with CPAC Speech Admits: No Longer Conservative

Remember Jonathan Krohn?

Jonathan Krohn Explains Why Hes No Longer Conservative in Politico Interview

He’s the 13-year-old kid who wowed conservatives at the 2009 Conservative Policial Action Conference in 2009. He wrote a book called “Defining Conservatism” and his speech went viral:

Well, now 17, Krohn is admitting to Politico he’s become a liberal and dismissing his former views as childish parroting of views he grew up hearing.

“He likes gay marriage and Obamacare. He’s going to New York University in the fall,” The Atlantic reports. “He name drops German philosophers.”

And sure enough.

“I think it was naive,” Krohn told Politico of the speech. “It’s a 13-year-old kid saying stuff that he had heard for a long time.… I live in Georgia. We’re inundated with conservative talk in Georgia.… The speech was something that a 13-year-old does. You haven’t formed all your opinions. You’re really defeating yourself if you think you have all of your ideas in your head when you were 12 or 13. It’s impossible. You haven’t done enough.”

Krohn tries to say in the interview that he’s not really liberal, but rather just not conservative. But even Politico isn’t buying it:

Krohn won’t go so far as to say he’s liberal, in part because his move away from conservatism was a move away from ideological boxes in general.

“I want to be Jonathan Krohn,” he said, “and I’m tired of being an ideology, and it’s not fun and it gets boring and it’s not who we are as individuals.”

But a quick rundown of his current political stances suggests a serious pendulum swing away from the right.

Gay marriage? In favor. Obamacare? “It’s a good idea.” Who would he vote for (if he could) in November? “Probably Barack Obama.” His favorite TV shows? “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report.” His favorite magazine? The New Yorker. And, perhaps telling of all, Krohn is enrolling this fall at a college not exactly known for its conservatism: New York University.

He explains the shift:

“One of the first things that changed was that I stopped being a social conservative,” said Krohn. “It just didn’t seem right to me anymore. From there, it branched into other issues, everything from health care to economic issues.… I think I’ve changed a lot, and it’s not because I’ve become a liberal from being a conservative — it’s just that I thought about it more. The issues are so complex, you can’t just go with some ideological mantra for each substantive issue.”

Krohn is bucking the received wisdom that people become more conservative as they get older, a shift he attributes partly to philosophy.

“I started reflecting on a lot of what I wrote, just thinking about what I had said and what I had done and started reading a lot of other stuff, and not just political stuff,” Krohn said. “I started getting into philosophy — Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, Kant and lots of other German philosophers. And then into present philosophers — Saul Kripke, David Chalmers. It was really reading philosophy that didn’t have anything to do with politics that gave me a breather and made me realize that a lot of what I said was ideological blather that really wasn’t meaningful. It wasn’t me thinking. It was just me saying things I had heard so long from people I thought were interesting and just came to believe for some reason, without really understanding it. I understood it enough to talk about it but not really enough to have a conversation about it.”

He goes on to attribute his conversion to “maturity overall”: “People don’t realize I was 14 when I wrote that book. I’m 17 now. In terms of my life, three years is a long time in a 17-year-old’s life.”

“Come on, I was thirteen,” he concluded. “I was thirteen.

@Texas Chris Great sound bite. Now some facts. People who work and don’t pay any income taxes is probably related to the low wages they are earning. And thus as a percentage of their income they are paying a much higher percentage in payroll, excise taxes, sales taxes, license and other government fees (really taxes). So while your sound bite keeps you comfortable in your ideology. Once and a while take a break and do the math. You should actually be concerned about the people who are working and can’t make a living wage. That is the real issue to focus on. Oh and why Exxon deserves a $5 billion tax credit. Pretty much in line with communist screenwriters in the 1930s, taking on the persona of a deep thinker, troubled individual, with a big heart, sort of like James Dean, was a great way to get chicks. Common mis-attribution to Churchill. While the true source isn’t known, it is now believed to be a rephrasing of a quote from 19th century French politician Francois Guizot, who quipped: “Not to be a republican at 20 is proof of want of heart; to be one at 30 is proof of want of head.”

And that analogy is fitting just like it should because it was said that in your early years to include your teen years you become liberal since you have been dependent on your parents for food clothing and shelter. And as you get your first job and have to pay bills to survive by the time your like in your 40‘s or 50’s you begin to or change to the Conservative way of thinking at least on financial matters and then when you realize that financial and social affect each other you go complete when you see that you now as a parent to a new generation you have provided them with food clothing and shelter until they leave for college.

The circle then completes and life goes on.

First of all JROOK is right of course. The poorest pay a greater percentage of their income on taxes than anyone else when you look at all taxes, including payroll taxes, gas taxes and sales taxes and other consumption taxes. Percentage-wise they pay a lot more of their income on taxes than Romney does with his 14% tax rate even if they don’t pay income tax.

Second, this teenager is pretty typical. He a smart guy who is educating himself. More educated people tend to be liberal, partly because they’re exposed to more ideas outside the indoctrination they received as children, something uneducated people never experience. And perhaps he met some people in school who were different from him but still were okay people.

The German philosopher Nietzsche gave the basis for Rand’s ultraconservative political philosophy. This kid didn’t become liberal from reading Nietzsche, unless he rejected his idea, and Rand’s, that the most powerful have a right to rule the world and subject the rest of us to their whims and drive everyone into poverty to enrich themselves.

My view? He became liberal because he realized there are more people in this world than just him, and perhaps he realized that the basic human instinct of altruism that Christ tried to cultivate in others was a value that was important to him.

lol. It’s insane to let college kids vote. Young people don’t think for themselves, until they have to work for a living. Healthy young adults who stay under their parents’ TaxedCare up to age 26 should be treated as underage children. The legal voting age should be 26 for young people who have not worked full time for at least a year after turning 18. Something like that.

@RICKC34 Kant was devoutly religious, practically a theologian. Wittegenstein‘s main idea is that a lot of philosophical problems are caused by philosopher’s screwing with the everyday common sense meanings of words, so a lot of philosophy is just academic b.s., an idea that seems pretty conservative to me. Nietzsche was definitely an atheist, but he also hated antisemitism, thought Jesus was a great man, and promoted individualism above all else. If you read his work you could tell he would have opposed a lot of democratic economic policy.

j rook you also seem to forget the income tax is a progressive income tax… meaning those who dont hit a certain level of income pay 0 to the federal… and pay 0 to the state…. yes they pay sales tax and liscening fees etc, but on the other hand many people are privledge to other forms of assistance.. medicade, welfare, section 8 housing… so your right… life is hard making a working wage, but on the other hand they do not pay close to 40% of their wages in TAXES… you fool….

SWAMPY, the fact that you would equate Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, and Kant with Hitler just proves how clueless you are. Oh and now Obama is a Nazi? I thought he was a Muslim Communist Fascist Marxist Kenyan? Make up your mind.

MIL-DOT and the rest of you claiming he was indoctrinated. You don’t get it. He was indoctrinated prior to being educated and gaining the ability to think for himself. Conservatives and religion oppose free thought.

WOJCIECH W: He scammed stupid people, like the organizers at CPAC, Fox News (who interviewed him, Newt Gingrich (who offered to write the forward to his book), Karl Rove (who called him his “Mini-Me”) as well as the tens of thousands who rushed out to buy his book. You mean fools like those? You have no clue about him, his background or his parents so you decided to make stuff up because it eases the sting?

JSCIAI: There is no record of Churchill ever speaking these words, and it is highly unlikely that he would have because Churchill himself did precisely the opposite. He entered politics as a Conservative and was a Conservative at age 25. He switched to the Liberal Party at age 29 and was a Liberal at age 35. See how an education can prevent you from embarrassing yourself?

      JQCitizen:
My Husband and I have also gone thru the same thing. Our kids became liberal AFTER moving out (so they could fit in their friends). They THOUGHT that when they got out from under our roof, that could do whatever they wanted. WRONG. They found out the hard way through paying taxes, taxes, and LAWS. THEY HATE IT because they can barely make ends meet. When they once HATED the capitalist, they now understand that it takes money to make money and without entrepreneurs, there would be no growth, no jobs, no choices. One of my sons jumps from job to job, barely able to make it. We said long ago that they could move home 5 times and then, that’s it. We made it 5 because WE KNEW that they would go from immaturity to maturity and eventually find their way on their own. They are still a bit immature, but they now think differently. They are not allowed to move home again, ever (unless, of course, something devastating happens in our country. They are struggling, but we encourage them to stand for conservative principles: hard work, endurance, and honesty, and they will make it. The one Son gets it and continues his uphill battles. The other one sort of does, but is still going on his merry way, blaming everyone for everything that happens to him. He will never be successful until he looks in the mirror and takes personal responsibility.

There’s IS a difference between progressives and conservatives: PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY

His popularity he gained from the book found him wanting to be “cool”. Unfortunately, liberalism is perceived as cool. Now that he’s a sweetheart for the libs, he may never return. The self righteous arrogance of the left coupled with his youth may prevent him from ever returning to the right. Poor kid. If a free-thinker can emerge as he gets older, he could return to the right.

He parroted conservativism. Now he’ll parrot liberalism. He’ll be embraced and feel loved by the “popular people” as he goes through his personal catharsis. Then he’ll finish waking up, realize Nietzsche was a syphilitic nut job, Wittgenstein was an confused logicist with major daddy-issues, and Kant was probably OCD / paranoid (not dismissing everything they wrote, but none had lives to emulate). @JZS
You’re right that poor people pay more taxes than just their income tax alone would allow you to suspect, but both you AND Jrook fail to include the most egregious of the taxes they and the rest of us pay. You see, when you tax a COMPANY, the company folds that into the PRICE of their goods and services, so a very large chunk of everything the poor buy is also artificially inflated because of the hidden tax on consumers we call a “business tax”. Will you be consistent with your own recommendations and admit we should stop taxing corporations? Thought not.
You see, educated people aren’t always very smart, and they’re often VERY illogical. They think education grants them some kind of extra openness and wisdom, but they fail to see that their own haughtiness prevents them from understanding that true intelligence is acquired by correct application of principles. It CAN help them gain true understanding, and CAN expose them to new ideas, but only correct principles can help them navigate and judge wisely between the ideas-which is why many educated people become moral relativists like you.
Christ was right: we must become as little children to inherit the kingdom of God. As to how to become altruistic and serve others? Your liberal proposals so remove the human heart from this purpose that you obtain the opposite of your stated intent: oppression. Conservative solutions serve the poor much better.

The little **** has reversed the process of “If you are a conservative before you are 30 you have no heart if you are a liberal after 30 you have no brains.” The heartless one has until his 30th birthday to get a brain. Rush has well said, “liberalism is not an intellectual pursuit. Liberalism is basically the most gutless choice you can make. It’s nothing but emotion and feeling. They see a homeless person, ‘Oh, I feel so bad. Oh, look, I feel so bad, because I have sympathy I’m a good person.” Conservative sees a homeless person, “What are we going to do about that, that’s not good, this is not good for the country. We need to find a way to make that person productive.” ‘Ah,‘ the liberals say that’s not compassion. But conservatism is an intellectual pursuit and people that are turned on and inspired by conservatism will be active, intellectually involved in the program and liberals just cannot ascertain this active participation, active audience participation because there’s no intellect involved in liberalism, it’s purely emotion based.”

not really. the kid is right in that in the beginning im sure he was parroting mucgh of the views he heard. he could not have the life experience required to know WHY conservative principals work. as a teen you then start to question everything and your views become whatever the opposite of your parents are, just to be different. this is where he is now. after he hits the real world for a few years, thoes conservative principals will automattivally make more sense and he will revert back. See conservative principals are complex responses to complex issues built over years and years. liberal ideas are based on simple childlike responses to complex problems. thats whuy liberals argue things like ‘fairness, happiness, and entitlements’ because these ideas only work for a child mentality. the desire to do what you want, have what you want, not work, and take what you want from someone you think dosent deserve it are all child concepts. conservatism is based on real world experience and simply are the ideas that work. let the boy have his fun. he will be back. “if your young and not liberal, you dont have a heart, if your old and not conservative, you dont have a brain”

Maybe in his case his conservatism really was little more than his parroting of beliefs his conservative up bringing exposed him to. Just because conservative beliefs are rooted in logical and reason it does not mean a conservative believer used logic and reason to acquire their philosophy on life. A person can easily adopt the conservative beliefs if they were basically forced upon them, the only thing unusual here is that it’s usually easier for a gullible and naive person to adopt the Leftwing point of view because that philosophy appeals to our more primitive emotional gut.

If his conservative views really were the parroting of things he had soaked up then it’s only natural that as he grew into an older teen that he would soak in the pop culture that most teens are saturated with and would latch onto those beliefs too. I mean he watches The Daily Show for crying out loud! What do you expect would happen to someone who has already admitted they don’t apply independent thought to issues?

I remember in High School I had no idea what I was. Liberal sounded like the best choice, but really had no idea what that meant. Yup! Churchill was right, by 30 I finally learned the difference and became a Conservative. Thank goodness Winston, I do have a brain, Yea!

Never been sorry. In fact, when I’m around libs, I immediately know who they are because of how they act and what they say and would never choose them for a close personal friend.

As a young kid I was a social conservative, then became liberal as a late teenager and young adult. I voted for Clinton BOTH times for heavens sake! Then after my daughter was born I began waking up to the reality that the liberal philosophy embodied few of the core values that I believe in and wanted my daughter to embrace. I think progressive liberal thought is so prevalent with youth because too often youth are so self-obsessed and selfish. Liberalism caters to and even encourages the “ME NOW!” entitlement mentality. At best, liberalism presents itself as charity, but it is in fact a form of cowardice that demands that others be forced to perform the work. In most cases the liberals will proclaim “HELP THE VICTIMS!” and then desperately try to place themselves into a category of victimhood.

And at 17 he knows everything, right? This is exactly why the Founders made the age of the Presidency 37. Peoples minds change all the time. Usually, by your mid 30s, you’ve learned enough that your opinions are pretty much going to be set in stone.

I’d bet that within the next 10 years, he changes his mind back at least somewhat.

I think you meant to type 35, but I agree with what you said about setting that age (the oldest age requirement for elected office). It takes a while to bring together everything you have heard and reconcile it with what you have lived. For those very lucky ones, a political ideology is formed that is not easily swayed by one extreme or the other, but holds the center fast.

This is America and anyone is free to change their mind in decision making. Some times we make the wrong choices but we soon wise up sooner or later…Obamatax is not for me as I know of no one that didn’t get help when they needed it in case of an emergency. We have a choice early in life whether to chose insurance or not and my choice has always been yes, I did not use for years and I thank God for that. My life style is heterosexual but he is free to believe whatever he wants to as long as it doesn’t interfere with my God given right. I know where I stand with God…. Obamatax is going to harm a lot of seniors so young man you better think about that because old age comes before you know it

Refute it with an alternate study or information, or crawl back inside the conservative bubble. Putting your fingers in your ears and saying “Nuh-uh” doesn’t hold a lot of weight.

True, parroting the teachers. Put my son through private high school without knowing he could not pass exams without putting forth extremely conservative views. He has done really well by hard work and good reasoning, but I had read that young adults’ brain does not reach maturity until age 24. Then fully formed thoughts with rational insight may be formed and communicated effectively. This kid has barely begun to live, but should he become an intellectual-type, he is making inroads with his publicity. Probably has a good income coming in already, huh?
