Tenn. Senate OKs Ban on Teaching of Homosexuality

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A bill passed Friday by the Tennessee Senate would forbid public school teachers and students in grades kindergarten through eight from discussing the fact that some people are gay.

Opponents deride the measure as the “don’t say gay bill.” They say it’s unfair to the children of gay parents and could lead to more bullying. Supporters say it is intended to give teachers clear guidance for dealing with younger children on a potentially explosive topic.

Debate: TN Anti-Gay Bill Passes Senate: MyFoxMEMPHIS.com

The bill isn’t likely to be taken up by the House before lawmakers adjourn this spring, but the sponsor there has said he would push it forward in 2012 when the General Assembly comes back for the second year of the session.

Passage would make Tennessee the first state to enact such legislation, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. In 2003, Washington defeated a proposal similar to Tennessee’s, as did California in 2005 and 2006. A Louisiana law forbids the use of sexually explicit materials depicting homosexuality in sex education classes.

Under the proposal, any instruction or materials at a public elementary or middle school would be limited to age-appropriate lessons about the science of human reproduction.

The legislation was amended from the original version, which said no elementary or middle schools will “provide any instruction or material that discusses sexual orientation other than heterosexuality.” Republican Senate sponsor Stacey Campfield of Knoxville said some of his colleagues were uncomfortable with that language.

“There’s more than one way to skin a cat,” Campfield said after the vote. “I got what I wanted.”

He said the language is appropriate because “homosexuals don’t naturally reproduce,” and he said it‘s necessary because the state’s curriculum is unclear on what can be taught.

However, a critic said the new wording could create other problems.

Sen. Roy Herron, D- Dresden, said it “may inadvertently prevent the teaching of ethics, morality and abstinence.”

Stephen Smith, assistant commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Education, also said he’s unaware of homosexuality being taught anywhere in the state. He said there is nothing in the state’s curriculum standards that allows students to be taught about homosexuality.

Yep, because the proper way to solve uncomfortable questions is to just ignore them and deny their existence, because that will make the problem go away….

This is the reason Teen Pregnancy is WAY WAY up, Parents say “We want to talk to our kids about sex” but then say “it is too uncomfortable for me so I will just ignore the issue” and are SHOCKED… SHOCKED that little Suzzy comes home preggo, or little Billie knocked up the neighbor girl

The lack moral values is the cause of teen pregnancy, violences and drug use.

The solution to bad schools and poor curriculum choices is not REMOVAL of class but changes to curriculum…

Sex Ed should be taught, at about the 9th grade level, and should include standard health bases education on symptoms and causes of STD’s and education about dangers of Teen Pregnancy, via a Health Based Program.

Just ignoring the problem will not make it go away, Society has unnaturally extended the “proper” age for sexual relations in the first place, not that I disagree with the goal, but the fact is nature via hormones and other biological functions tell teenagers that it is time to reproduce and nothing you can say or do will change that fact. The only thing you can do is provide them with enough information for them to make a educated choice for themselves.

More Speech, on any topic, is ALWAYS better than less speech…. PERIOD

9th grade is too late for Sex Ed. Kids are starting to have sex around age 11. On account of the sheer numbers of kids who are barely parented at all, especially in the inner cities, I believe Sex Ed is important, but the parents who care should be in full control of curriculum, and if the parents who disagree with you are in bigger numbers, then you let your kids sit out and/or teach them at home… or.. its time to move or homeschool.

The real problem is the type of people who go into education, who become teachers, and the college education they get. I let my credential expire for a couple reasons… so much paperwork the job was impossible to do right anyway, and weariness over working with so many morons. Hate to say it, but the education field does not exactly attract the best and brightest. It attracts people who can do lots of fun busy-work projects but who know they haven’t got the intellectual capacity to pass Math and Science courses beyond whatever grade-level credential they’re seeking.

Most of my teaching was in court schools, Juvenile Hall, that sort of thing, but when I did teach Kindergarten and First grade I was appalled at the stupidity of even the writers of the curricula. One “Science” unit in Georgia Kindergartens is about “Jungle Animals”. All the kids need to learn in a while week of studying “Jungle Animals” is that lions, zebras, tigers, giraffes and elephants live in the jungle. I mean, where did they do their research, the baby wallp

Only 6% of High School Student have had sex before the age of 13, while 46% of High School Students have had sex (2009 CDC Autonomous Survey), Thus the Logical, Statistic Bases Target Age for Sex Education is 9th Grade, or maybe an Intro basic Class in 8th Grade Heath…. No Sooner…

I wish you were right, really, but the horror stories I could tell you… How about the FIRST GRADER who was so in love with a little girl in my class that he shoved her up against the wall and described in angry and graphic detail where he was going to shove his…. you get the idea. This, to his mind, an expression of love! I have picked up some very sexually explicit notes passed between fifth graders, and more between eighth graders. I have seen eighth graders bully and tease other eighth graders for being virgins. The kids in the court system where I taught were probably about 80% of them already parents, average age fifteen and a half. And yes, we had pregnant 11 and 12 year olds in there.

I wish I lived in your world, where 9th grade was plenty soon enough. For homeschoolers, it probably is. For some public schools, like those in housing project areas, they already know too much in Kindergarten.

Are home schooled children eligible for reduced or free taxpayer provided meals and study materials and equipment? If not, shouldn’t home schooling families get a property and income tax rate reduction? Think of the public monies being saved by these home schooled children who are not using tax resources such as bussing fuels, school energy consumption, need for additional teachers and administration staff and facilities. Not to mention the lesser costs to society after they become adults who are not functionally illiterate, and morally confused societal burdens. Perhaps it’s time for all the home schooling families in this country to form a Union to promote and protect their rights as citizens performing a valuable service to our Republic. Someone come up a good acronym such as NEW PATRIOTS- National Educational Wing of Parents As Teachers Responsibly Instructing Our Treasured Successors.

minutes after they leave class, most k – 5 graders have the attention span of a bug, very short,it is either play videos or watch t v , now 6 – 8, they may have a little more interest, some may start learning about the effects of hormones, their attention can change in less than a blink of an eye, their brains move just as fast as their mouths, so why force them to learn something that they have no interest in.this subject should be taught by the parents, not some liberal agenda ,mind altering, left wing, anti America special interest group. wake up parents and grandparents, our future is being taken away from us everyday, and we lose more of our kids and our future with every graduating class. if you are going to teach kids that you are born gay, then you must also teach them that you are born stupid.

Why is it necessary to teach sexual variance at the elementary school level? If eight year old Sally has a play date with eight year old Heather at Heather’s house, why is it necessary for Sally to know that the two adult females that Heather lives with, have sex with other?

I’m sure that if Heather lived with a male and a female partner, married or not, there wouldn’t be any discussion at all, about their sexual relationship.

This is more about the homosexuals, that have some strange need to be accepted by Society as being “normal”. Frankly, I don’t care who or what someone wants to have sex with, as long as it’s not an adult preying on a child. Then I care.

Well Diane, if eight year old Sally was born heterosexual, but is too young to be interested in boys yet, what Heather’s mom’s have might start to look pretty good to her. She might start thinking that she would want to live with Heather that way, not understanding that that would mean not marrying a boy and having his babies. If she tells Heather, who is also straight but understands the difference between straight people and gay people, that she wants to live with her the way Heather’s mommies do, she may scare her off. Poor Heather will think that Sally knows what she is talking about and is asking for something that Heather just can’t give her, and there goes a beautiful innocent friendship right down the drain, just because Sally’s mom – let’s call her Diane, is a cowardly prude who doesn’t know how to talk to her daughter about the different kinds of people in the world.

I mean just look at what the teachers in WI did to try to get there way, used the kids, taught them what the teacher thinks need to be taught, taking them to protest omg lol, and we wonder why our schools fail. the teachers just take a big fat checks big fat pension big fat healthcare and teach whatever the hell they want while they cut music art and sports and whatever else they cut so that they dont take a pay cut.

It really is a shame to need a law to be passed when good old common sense should work. Guess the Tennessee legislature is now parenting, huh? Doesn’t anyone do any teaching, parenting, or guiding at home?

Thank goodness somebody checked on what is or isn’t being taught in TN schools!

Tennessee kids can’t add or subtract much less divide and multiply numbers but now they will be able to “procreate” as gays do.

I and others in Davidson & Williamson county TN are reviewing our text books. The liberal, progressive bent is subtle in most cases and none the less provides just the “nudge” to indoctrinate. It is quite an eye opening experience. There are many great and bold things happening in our State Legislature

There is no place for qweer agenda in schools. Home schooling works. My 4 hetro children would testify to that. Plus they are brilliant when compared to the ***** heads our public schools are graduating these days.

More Liberty taken away in the name of “Conservatism”. While I am not in favor of teaching “Homosexual History” and other such rot, the word “ban” is unsettling.

Wake up people this is a social issue!!! We pay Taxes to have our children learn real History like the constitution, reading, math, writing etc.not about social issues involving abnormal sex or any sex for that matter.I don’t pay taxes to educate my or any children in abnormal sexual behavior. If you want to cornhaul your buddy, go to the closet and enjoy it, don’t push your ****** belifs on me or my children. Live and let live. If you don’t like the country our founding fathers suffered and died for then remember they made it free enough for you to get out.

Yes, the word “ban” is unsettling, but so is coercion. Some feel an obligation to children and their parents to avoid forced compliance that violates their liberty and beliefs. In a system that has already been manipulated by the liberal/gay community to force compliance of their views on unsuspecting children a ban is no longer a unsettling idea, in fact a ban actually restores liberty.

My daughter’s 5th grade teacher would read stories out of the news every day. The material was obviously not part of any approved curriculum, but rather just keeping kids “up to date on world happenings”.
She took it upon herself to explain to 5th graders “that using embryos for stemcell research was not killing a baby like Republicans say, it’s just science”. Don’t tell me these card carrying liberals in our schools teach stricly out of text books and school board approved material.

Really, what’s next, teaching pedophelia is o.k. because it is caused by adolescent trauma! Teaching what it is I can see, but picking a side, nope! Seek medical consult or how about parental advice!!

School systems shouldn’t be teaching about sex at all.How many generations have figured it out without state intervention .All any of it is, is social engineering .Get back to the basics math, proper history, english ,science, etc.. We are spending way too much money for nonsense while we fall further and further behind other industrialized countries in education.

Human beings, no more than animals, need to be taught how to procreate. As they say, it comes naturally. The purpose of sex ed it to teach people the consequences of unprotected sex.

Not too sure what this bill is supposed to accomplish, except get people elected.
