Tens of Thousands of Israelis Take to the Streets to Protest Rising Cost of Living

Israelis Set up Tent City Protests

Israelis light candles as they sit in front of Israel's government building during a protest against the cost of living in central Tel Aviv, Israel, Monday, July 25, 2011. Over the past two weeks, Israelis have set up tent camps in a handful of cities throughout the country calling attention to the soaring cost of living. (AP Photo/Ariel Schalit)

JERUSALEM (AP) — Tens of thousands of Israelis took to the streets nationwide on Saturday to protest rising housing prices in the largest turnout in a grass-roots movement that began two weeks ago and is demanding steps from the government to ease the burden.

The protests over housing costs have tapped into wider discontent among Israelis over the high cost of living and the growing gaps between rich and poor. Other protests include doctors striking over working conditions and pay, parents demonstrating against expensive child rearing costs and similar outpourings over increasing gas prices.

Thousands thronged the streets of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and other major cities and chanted, “The people demand social justice.” Protesters waved Israeli flags and placards that read: “work 3 jobs but don’t make ends meet,” ”killing ourselves to live“ and ”social gaps are killing us.”

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said more than 100,000 people protested in 10 cities across the country from Beersheba in the south to Kiryat Shmoneh at the northern tip of the country Saturday night. Police closed major streets for the protesters to march.

The demonstrations began two weeks ago in Tel Aviv, where young activists set up a small tent encampment in a central neighborhood to draw attention to the country’s housing crunch. The protests, inspired in part by unrest in neighboring Arab countries, have continued to gain steam and show no signs of slowing.

“This is a great success; people are marching in the streets and living in the streets for the past two weeks,” Stav Shafir, one of the protest leaders said. “Finally people are choosing to determine how they want to live. We want affordable housing, health, education and welfare.”

The weeks of popular demonstrations are becoming a headache for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with polls showing a sharp drop in his approval ratings and strong support for the protesters. Netanyahu announced a package of reforms meant to lower housing prices last week but it did little to defuse the anger.

In Jerusalem, thousands marched through the city center to the prime minister’s house.

Protesters held up signs reading, “Netanyahu go home.” The protests have brought together people from diverse background and a wide range of political views. Recent demonstrations have included marches against the prices of gasoline, boycotts of expensive cottage cheese that forced manufacturers to lower prices and lengthy strikes by social workers and doctors over pay and working conditions.

The average Israeli salary stands at about $2,500 per month, with key professions like teachers, civil servants and social workers typically earning less than $2,000 a month.

Home prices jumped some 35 percent between December 2007 and August 2010 and rental rates have also risen steadily. Rent on a modest three-bedroom apartment in central Jerusalem can cost more than $1,000 per month and costs even more in Tel Aviv.

A standard, 1,000-square-foot (100-square-meter) apartment can easily top $600,000 in metropolitan centers like Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, and $200,000 to $300,000 in second-tier areas.

Protest organizers addressed a crowd of 50,000 people in Tel Aviv.

“We are here today to tell our elected representatives in the clearest manner that the government has a responsibility toward its citizens,” Daphni Leef, one of the leaders said. “Public housing isn’t a dirty word. No more tricks.”

Opposition leader Tzipi Livni said parliament should cancel its summer break to deal with the crisis.

Cabinet secretary Tzvi Hauser tried to defend the government’s policies on Channel 10 TV but was heckled and silenced by questions from a panel of critics. Hauser said the government had inherited the problems from previous governments and was working hard to solve them.

I‘m here in Israel and I’m telling you: don’t believe what you hear on the news!
      non of it is true!
those protesters are only 20 thousands – no more than that!
and they are all communists and extremists from the left and many anarchists.
      no one sane goes there.
the majority of Israelis are right wing and the polls show that nothing changed and if elections were taken today – Bebe would still win by far.
so who funds it all: it’s called NIF, a branch of Soros in Israel and it is very powerfull and everyone knows what NIF is but you’ll never hear about it in the news! amazing!
NIF is also funding dozens of pro-Palestinian movements and it is trying to destroy the Jewish state from the inside.
NIF = New Israel Fund. they want a NEW ISRAEL and they are trying to tear us apart from within!
remember: no one speaks of it out loud but on forums and all over the internet it is very clear to us all.
Israel is one of the most capitalist countries in the world and this is the key for it‘s huge economic success so I don’t think that a bunch of anarchists could change that.

It all sounds so good in theory: just give us more money to offset the cost of housing. They don’t stop and think about where the money comes from. It’s like here, they think Obama has his own magical stash of money, not realizing that those of us who work are putting money into that stash. If it becomes useless to work, because the government will just give you what you want, no one will work. Take a lesson from history: The Jamestown colony (I believe that’s the one) started out assigning 1/3 to look for gold, 1/3 to protect from Indians and 1/3 to raise the food. All the food went into a community collection, and you drew out what you needed. Problem is, everyone slipped away to look for gold. They almost all starved to death. Then they were allowed to OWN their own land, grow their own crops and only required to put in 10% so there would be some for emergencies. That succeeded.

Looks to me like the powers to be globalists are setting up another country’s demise. The groups hire unions and professional protesters to go in to countries and disrupt – adding some “locals” along the way. Also after leaders, as we can see with the US going in to Egypt, Libia and causing disruption in other countries. After Rupert Murcoch big time – placing plants in his organizations – probably even his own son in on it since his children hated any conservative views. Look for Fox to go further left than they have already. Murcdoch will cave. Research Bilderburg Group, Tri Lateral, and other globalist groups. Research people like, Kissinger, Rockafeller, Kennedys, Bushes, Rice, Soros, Powell and many, many others in our country and around the world. It’s easy to find out the members.

No Obama has nothing to do with protests in Israel. To suggest such or even hint bad BO has a part is absolutely insane and hurts the cause of us standing in truth.

Why do tens of thousands of protesters in Israel have to be Soros or bad BO? Why can’t it be truth, Israeli’s in the most part are socialist/Marxist. Here in America, Jews vote Progressive (formally known as Democrat) and Progressives are Socialist wanna B’s. Now we see Israeli‘s by the tens of thousands protesting BiBi because Israeli’s aren’t getting enough from Government. Connect the dots………

      Welfare
      Social Justice
      Collective religious belief

Each one of these are socialist, just as we say America has turned Socialist by having these programs. Just as bad BO is Socialist for wanting such programs.

If you think it sounds suspicious now, just wait until two weeks from now, when Israelis protest for Shari’ah Law.

Apparently not. Even Israel wants social justice. I don’t think there is any place on Earth to go to.

      Still stand for Israel, Glenn?

This story makes me wonder if what Glenn said about Israel *getting it* – is really as accurate as he thinks. T‘would appear the socialists and marxists calling for Israel’s destruction have infiltrated the populace of Israel too…

I did not know that there was “Unrest” with the Government in Israel. No one could pay those prices for houses with salaries that disproportionate. The pay is much more than in the Arab countries but wow the prices for homes are exorbidant. I am surprised. Social Justice sounds familar though. The U.S must have sent “Community organizers” over there.
I did not dream that the country was “Unhappy” with BeBe. I guess everyone is unhappy with the leaders including “Us”.
