Is the Westboro Baptist Church losing its edge? The controversial group, which calls itself a house of worship but is regarded by most as a small, family-led cult, originally planned to protest the funeral of Lt. Col. Roy Tisdale. But, the situation ended with a surprise — some might even say inspirational — conclusion.

Last week, Tisdale, a former Texas A&M University student, was killed by a fellow soldier at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. Fox10TV.com has more about the incident that inevitably took his life:

Lt. Col. Roy Tisdale, a former Texas A&M University student, was buried in the Aggie Field of Honor, an area of a College Station cemetery for Aggies and their supporters.

Tisdale was fatally wounded on June 28 during a safety briefing near the unit’s headquarters in the historic district of Fort Bragg at about 3:30 p.m., according to Fort Bragg officials.

Accused of the shooting was Spc. Ricky G. Elder of Kansas, who shot Tisdale and another soldier, who survived. Elder then shot himself and later died.

Despite the group’s press release exploiting Tisdale’s death and pledging to crash the memorial in College Station, Texas, the situation concluded with a very different outcome than was originally expected.

After news initially spread that the group, headed by ringleader Fred Phelps, was planning to protest and attend, former and current Texas A&M students took action. BuzzFeed has more about the counter-protest that they carried out against the Phelps family:

A fellow “Aggie”, Ryan Slezia, came up with a plan to create a human wall to block any protesters from getting near the funeral, and invited fellow Texas A&M students and alum to join. One participant tweeted that over 650 people showed up in maroon shirts to create a “maroon wall”.

Now, here’s the kicker and the “different” outcome: To the surprise of Tisdale’s family members, friends and others who had organized a massive counter-protest, the radicals failed to show up. That’s right — Westboro adherents were reportedly nowhere to be found.

Did the counter-protesters scare them away? It’s entirely possible.

Radio host Joe Pags spoke with Tisdale’s life-long friend Shawn Dixon about the fallen soldier and the plan that was launched to stop Westboro from ruining his funeral (the event is not listed on Westboro’s picket schedule page).

There’s nothing new about Westboro going after soldiers and military families. In fact, the radical group’s bizarre protests against these fallen men and women resulted in a 2011 Supreme Court ruling in their favor (the justices ruled 8-1 that their actions are protected by the First Amendment).

      these Westboro Baptist protesters have picked the worst possible strategy to voice their opinions…a total lack or respect to the fallen soldier and their families..Don’t they realize how hurtful their actions are to the families.who are already suffering through one of the worst things that can happen to a family,the loss of a loved one..they need to pick up their bibles and do a little self reflecting..and beg these families for forgiveness .

      That prayer of serenity really doesn’t apply to this situation. Too many of us sit back and pray our serenity prayer when the walls are falling around us and the fire is scorching us. There is a chapter in the Bible – Eccesiates 3 – that says there is a time for every purpose under heaven and includes that there is a time for war and a time for peace; a time to be silent and a time to speak. We need to be discerning about when to speak and when it is time for war. Only those without good judgment will sit back and not stand up for their Constitutional rights and more than that, their God given rights. America needs to come back to basic moral principles that it has drifted from years ago and it is coming to critical mass. We are allowing the few to dictate their beliefs onto the majority. It is time for this to end – now.

      Westboro are looney tunes, spewing hate at soldiers, but first they target LGBT. Claiming them a Liberal or Left-Wing plot is to see DNC in every closet, and hear IRS footsteps creaking the attic. The left is disgusted by Westboro, and made fun of their posters at Comic-Con. Many, if not most, A&M Maroon Wall are logically left wing students, offended by Westboro anti-LGBT message and instead supporting equal access while also honoring the troops and families sacrifice. Those two fit together, but we cant seem to grant it to the indep voters we need.

      When we sit at The Blaze telling each other “Prez Obama” or “LibJudges” or “LW students that don’t take baths” love Westboro church, WE look like looney-toons that say anything, any lie, scare, pummel, jamb-up, or shut down anything to win a congress seat thru fear.

      Grow up People. That wall of maroon supporting the family of the fallen; proud American college students, and all the others that stood together against other Westboro Koran burnings, looney marches, and asinine photo-ops, were standing up FOR American values of patriotism, humility, and integrity. Some of them may vote Democratic. But if we keep calling them names, a LOT MORE will vote Democratic in November.

      SoISay, you are correct. I am a true Independent, meaning I look at a voting record before I cast my vote regardless of party line, and have voted Republican as recently as the last election. I’m not voting that way this year. Not one of my votes will go to a Republican in November. Mostly, it’s the way the Republicans have conducted themselves, but a lot of it has to do with the people like the ones you find on The Blaze. I have been quietly walking among the people on the far right and am disgusted about how they conduct themselves on a daily basis. Never in my life have I witnessed so much hate and bigotry as I have when I spend time with these people. The hypocritical and ignorant world view of the far right conservative will be the downfall of this country, but if that’s the vision for this country that they have planned for us, part of me says to let the US fail. The other part of me wants a brighter future, which is why I will vote Democrat across the board later in the year. It is how I will separate myself from the NAZI’s.

      KAT747 – first let me say how proud I am of the aggies althoug I cheer for UT on Thanksgiving weekend.
      The IRS is not going to go after the Westboro church because if they did they would have to go after Al Sharptons church in his house and try to collect the back taxes that he owes. Epic Holdup will not stand for that.
      The IRS is to busy giving to TEA Party impossible deadlines too file for tax exempt status and harassing anyone who opposes Sweet Old Barack.

    I graduated from Texas A&M this past December and now live in D.C. Yesterday, I have never been more proud to be a member of the Aggie family.     Freedom of Assembly? Obviously not.

    I think what disappoints me the most is that so many of us to not understand what freedom really means. It’s not just having everybody else accept what you do, but also YOU accepting what everybody else does. Doesn’t mean you have to like it or agree with it, but understanding and accepting it is what is truly special.

      Maybe the Aggies can apply this to the bars and nightclubs? How about strip joints where women are displayed and exploited, how about an abortion clinic?

      I get their outrage, but what happens when they get the crazy idea to come to your church because it preaches against gay marriage…what then? Will it be cute then? Will you cower in fear? Eventually the whole movement against what is wholesome and good will come to a head! Literally down to your head!

      I do not need to or want to understand or accept anything WBC does. I respect their rights, but not their motives. If WBC have the “right” to interfere with a funeral, then the Aggies have the right to interfere with their protest. Counter protests are still protests and are legal as long as they are peaceful like this one.
      Christianity teaches us to help guide others to salvation, not to block someones path by denying them their last rights. I am offended by the fact that WBC does these things in the name of God. It sickens me.

      @Haus: But you see, it goes both ways. Westboro is free to assemble and protest and these individuals are free to assemble a counter protest. It seems that you are the one that does not understand freedom.

      Just because you don‘t like what they did does not mean they weren’t free to do it. The freedom to assemble doesn’t mean only the assembly we like. It most definitely means the assembly we don’t like.

      What you are describing is anarchy – not libertarianism. I’m a big believer in “live and let live” – but only until you encroach upon my rights. Despite the poor ruling by SCOTUS, these radicals do not have a right to harrass a grieving family. The fact that they were shut down so easily shows what cowards they really are. Good Job Aggies!!!       no one has to put up with that when they are at a funeral of a loved one. Freedom does not mean standing by watching people do things that are wrong. Would you stand and watch someone murder a person because it means they have freedom. Ok to bomb our buildilngs 9-11 as they have freedom and we should stand and understand. Get real. Maybe the hundreds just wanted to attend the funeral. Your post was not well thought out if I understood it correctly.

    Glad to see more and more people honoring the fallen and defending the families during the funerals for their lost loved ones. The Westboro demonstrate by their deeds all that is wrong among a minority of self-declared “Christian” churches, may they see the truth and light before God brings judgement unto them in this world.

      I agree but these people are painting ALL Christians as a part of this kind of thinking at West Boro. I don’t agree with their overzealous nature and preaching but there is something to it. Seems the whole world has come down on their heads for their stance.

      If they left the troops out of it, would those who commented negatively see them in a different light? I wonder! They should be able to proclaim the gospel as well as the damnation as they please, but having some sensitivity to the non-believer should also be in their script because that would also demonstrate Gods Love. Know when to preach it and know when it respect others by holding your peace. Let your life walk speak louder than your boisterous words which can be misconstrued by the world, but your actions and deeds will say what your about.

      They are not Christian. They preach hate. Not unlike many on this site who preach hate as well. Theirs is radical and hatred of gay people and not about gay marriage, two different issues. The Supreme Court was right with the Constitution which leads people to be inventive with our protections of privacy with rights to assemble. In other words two can play that game, my take.Thanks Aggies and anyone who respects another’s grief.       I agree with you, SnowLeopard! What “certain people” here seem to forget is that historically WBC do not stand in silence, holding their signs. (Although I vehemently HATE their signs, they DO have the Constitutional right to do this.) But they hoot and holler and scream and inflict their personal agenda and spew their vitriol upon those who are gathered for the saddest, most crushing event in their lives, the final farewell to someone gone way too soon, someone who dedicated his or her life to upholding the very freedoms which WBC seek to mock and use to their own advantage.
      There are many reasons I love and cherish the spirit of Texas. This has just added one more.

      With regards to the Patriot Guard Riders, let‘s clarify a few things in response to Roberto’s comment.

      The Patriot Guard Riders is NOT a Motorcycle Club! It is a Veterans Support Organization. Owning or riding a Motorcycle is not a prerquisit of participation within the PGR. Non Riders are affectionately called “Cagers”.

      Organized in 2005 by members of American Legion Riders Club Post 136, after the Protestors in question began to disrupt Military Funerals, the PGR has grown to over 260,000 members .

      The Patriot Guard at the invite of the family of any fallen Soldier or Honorably Discharged Veteran from any branch of service, free of monetary charge, will provide an Honor Escort for that Soldier or Veteran, including Flag Lines at the Funeral Home, Church, and place of Interment. It is a non-political, non-confrontational environment intended to maintain the highest level of dignity and respect for those who wish to honor their fallen Hero.

    Yes – so happy to see some counter action to this “hate” group. Certainly not “Christian” and I’ve had thoughts that it might even be a bunch of more crazed liberals (like the Occupy group) that just call themselves Christian in order to bring more disdain, hatred and confusion re Christianity.
