Texas Fires Pick Up Speed, Sweep Through Central Texas

Wildfires charring the landscape across Central Texas have reportedly picked up steam in their destructive path and have claimed more than 350 homes, leaving an estimated 5,000 residents homeless. Thousands of other residents have been asked to evacuate their homes and take up shelter at designated emergency locations as the fire continues to spread.
The sweeping firestorm has even alarmed Gov. Rick Perry, who cancelled a planned campaign appearance at South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint’s Palmetto Freedom Forum today in order to better manage the fast-moving fires on the ground in Texas.
Local NBC news affiliate KXAN is describing the spreading fires as “one of the worst calamities that area has ever seen.”
The hardest-hit area was Bastrop, about 30 miles east of Austin, where hundreds of homes were consumed by the fire that covered about 14,000 acres and stretched some 16 miles long. The flames jumped the Colorado River.
“it is not contained at this time,” said Bastrop County Judge Ronnie McDonald during morning news briefing at the Bastrop Convention Center. “It’s going to get worse before it gets better.” …
Fire officials said conditions were worse Monday that they were when the fires flare up Sunday afternoon.
Morning winds reignited some flames and firefighters said do not expect that residents will be allowed back to the homes anytime soon.
A separate KXAN page has been established to direct donations to where they are needed to help people affected by the fires.

I Hooked up the RV, rounded up the dogs, loaded up the BOB’s and ready to go if we get the word. My little girl is sleeping through the whole thing, if she was awake, she’d be a cat on a hot tin roof.

Posted on September 6, 2011 at 2:09amHello fellow Leander-ites?? LOL. Fires were unreal today. Could see the big one in Leander, the fire in Bastrop and the one I think in Steiner’s Ranch all from my back yard…. while getting wafted with smoke from fires that were just north of a school I live not too far from. The poor people in Bastrop definitely got the worst…. there was so much smoke coming up it looked like a Thunder Storm off in the distance. Last I heard they were at 17,000 acres burned. For those that have, thank you for your prayers. I think the winds are finally supposed to die down tomorrow, I also can‘t help but wonder if there’s some whack job piro on the loose starting these things.

Posted on September 5, 2011 at 6:41pmRick Perry is coming home not because he’s the state governor, or because he wants to look good politically, but because he’s a loyal Texan. From here in Connecticut, I see a real executive who cares about his neighbors and is determined to do all he can to minimize the damage of these devastating fires. And then I think of the Teleprompter-in-Chief in Washington, our national socialist dictator-in-waiting, insulting his legitimate opposition and sneering down his nose at the American people who refuse to rise as one to applaud his greatness. What a contrast. Go, Rick Perry!

I was mentioning it earlier tonight and said what a contrast that Obama didn’t bother to check out his east coast area until he had to, and my husband said either way, they would have hammered Perry because that’s what they do best.
Personally, I’m fed up with the CBC and their threats to the Tea Party. I’m fed up with Obama, I‘m fed up with uncaring liberals who want what’s in it for them, not what’s in it for the Country.

Posted on September 5, 2011 at 5:06pmPerry should remain Governor of Texas. He’s doing his job by coming back. I do not think he should be President. He’s a lifelong politician. I can tolerate the man as Governor even though I did not vote for him in the last election, and he may even make a decent President, but I think we can do better as a nation. We need a staunch Tea Party leader in the WH. We’re on FIRE here in Texas and even in California, but Barry will head to Cali before he comes here. That’s more than fine with me. I feel for the people losing their homes just a few miles north of us here in San Antonio. The strange thing is that we woke up to the coolest, windiest morning and many of us were thanking God that it will not be over 105 degrees for the first time in months, but the winds are moving and lighting everything up. Fellow Texans, we need to take care of ourselves and watch out for your neighbor. Volunteer firefighters are getting it done as best they can. People need to get out and don’t try and turn on the garden hoses! The state will step up. Perry has to step up. He is being watched really closely now, so be patient and stay safe!! Posted on September 5, 2011 at 7:31pmYou’re right about FEMA. One of the most inept of government run programs. What they did during Katrina was a real nightmare. They are absolutely no help, more trouble than they’re worth. They let the leeches from Katrina file for money they didn’t deserve. That‘s watching out for everyone isn’t it? FEMA probably wasted more money on scams than they spent on actual help. No one was watching the other hand, so much for government help. I’m glad Perry came home to show his concern, which was a heck of a lot more than Obama did.

Now having used it to destroy $5 billion in food and cotton in Texas. Way to go Barry. We Texans will just spit and get on with it. The days of coincidence around this guy are over. Most Texans, aside from the heavilty black community Rev Wright type supporters in Dallas and Houston, and those in the hidden Mosques around the major cities, feel like something just is not right with the weather. It has nothing to do with global warming. Even in the worst of years with El Nina, we got rain intermittenly. we rarely got fires that rages like the ones in California. But those winds are the Santa Annas which is normal for them. Most of us here in Texas have the humidity to stave off fires, but it has been abnormally dry for so many months now that I guess if God is testing us. So, I will continue to praise his name and wait on relief. I guess I’m thinking out loud too. Or maybe the months zero rainfall and merciless heat have caused my brain to become infused with conspiracy ideas! Glad I’m not the only one.

Posted on September 5, 2011 at 2:25pmHere are some things you won’t hear on MSM: During the evacuation in one neighborhood of 4,000 residents, there were only two ways out (it is a lake/river community). People ran out of gas waiting in traffic, so some good Samaritans were walking up and down the roads with gas cans and filling people’s tanks up so they could get to saftey. When the shelters got full many people who were not in danger from the fire opened their homes to the overflow ;churches and people are running dog food (pets are allowed at the shelters), bottled water and other things down to the shelter. The fire in that neighborhood is still out of control, at last report 25 homes were burned to the ground. There were so many fires breaking out yesterday, that the FD couldn’t get to them all and people were left trying to save their homes themselves (without water since the wells run on electricity and the elect. had already gone out), a call was put out for anyone who had experience in fire fighting in the past to come in and volunteer, they had so many calls, they no longer need additional help.

I do have to wonder why the media is covering the story at face value for why Perry is dropping out of the debates. They sure would not give that benefit of the doubt to other candidates. Why isn’t the Blaze covering a story on Perry dropping out of the SC Forum? He is obviously the media darling (remember McCain 2008?) who they feel would be the weakest opponent for Obama so they are laying back and waiting for the General Election to destroy Perry. Let’s face it these fires have been going on for several months now and he could have already left for Texas, toured the fires and been back for the debate. Perry has a past of avoiding debates and the media are giving him the same type of pass they normally reserve for Obama.

Perry doesn’t actually speak to God? God wasn’t listening? God doesn’t care about Texas? God is so preoccupied with all the other prayers he just hasn’t gone far enough down the list to help Texas yet? God listened, but decided it was a bigger test of faith to throw in the fires for a while before sending rain? Perry prayed to the wrong god? Or, the famous ad hoc reason, God just works in mysterious ways? Perhaps Perry needs to shave his head to demonstrate he is without vanity and worthy of God’s favor.

Posted on September 5, 2011 at 5:00pmsaranda “How come no on is talking about the fires being a sign from God?”
Why do you blame all evil on God? Does it not occur to you the devil could be causing this evil? Texas is the greatest threat to the nightmare coming from the left hijacked federal government today, and the lefts agenda is from the devil. Maybe the devil is causing this destruction and his greatest trick is to get ignorant people to blame all evil on God. How do you know the devil does not have his loyal people out there starting fires? The administration ignored the floods in the bible belt Midwest and ignores the fires in Texas. So who’s side are they on? Thou shalt not covet anything that is thy neighbors. Yet the left and their welfare non working voter base spend every minute coveting everything their neighbors go to work and pay for every day. Maybe God is not helping Texas because He knows Texas will take care of their own, unlike the rest of the leftist dominated country, concentrated mainly on both coasts. Maybe God is making Texans tougher because He knows Texans could be the last hope the last free nation has.

Popular with similar whiney, unbearably untalented bunches of heroin addicts like Courtney Love.

I have been reading everyone’s and your posts as if they were a part of Country Adventure novel. The majority of the posts are collectively a very good read! I am impressed with the overall unity amongst all of you.
I was reading along and absorbing how concerned you all were—and are—for each other when Crazy Texan writes, “Hey, wasn’t Veruca the name of the spoiled brat in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” I read the book as a child and seen two different movies of the book, but I did not recognize the name, “Veruca.” So, I raced up to Wikipedia and checked.
Well, Crazy Texan, you are on the ball! You must have a very cool, focused mind in chaos, because Veruca Salt is in the book and movies, but the spoiled brat demands a squirrel from the Nut Room. After being denied access by Mr. Wonka, she enters anyway, and the squirrels decide she is a bad nut and throw her down the rubbish chute.
Crazy Texan, God Bless You for Your Heart, as well as all of the rest of you! It is nice witnessing a bunch of strangers pulling together and helping each other!!! I do not reside in Texas. I live in the Southwest.
If any of you lose your homes or anything, my heart is with you, because a family acquires a lot of priceless items that can never be replaced! God Bless You All!

Posted on September 5, 2011 at 10:47pmI was so busy reading your posts that I had no idea how extremely critical your situation really is. Apparently, Tropical Storm Lee had a part in your situation by bringing in the unwanted winds that started all those fires—more than 63 new fires—within a 24-hour period. Over 60,000 acres have burned so far!!! Over 400 hundred homes have been burnt to the ground. And, yes, the two casualties, a mother and a toddler did die today. Winds going 40 miles per hour!

Posted on September 6, 2011 at 1:36amUncurable, please explain to me exactly what the effect on your life has been from a group of “higher ups” meeting and discussing the world’s present state? They don’t implement law. They don’t rule over our land. The Bilderberg conspiracy has gotten so out of control. People say the word “Bilderberg” and everyone runs in fear.

Posted on September 5, 2011 at 1:44pmToo bad the tropical storm that hit New Orleans didn’t lean a little more left. Damn, thought I’d never ask anything to lean a little more left in my life.
My heart goes out to these people who have lost their home from this fire.
