Perhaps we should hire their coach for the Patriots … might liven up our offense. Looks like their defense is about the same as ours, though. :-)

Having played, well, let’s say “many” years of football, that is the perfect play for that level. High School would never get away with it. But talk about taking them by surprise . . .

No you’re not the only one. I think trick plays are bush league. If you have to win by trickery than maybe you’re just not good enough to win playing the “real” game.

That said, this was an amusing clip.

@jjcoolay You win by trickery all the time in football!! People fake handoffs, the head fake, sending out receivers during a running play, the famed Statue of liberty play!?!?!? Maybe you guys are oversensitive to being fooled because of the way the administration behaves these days.

I thought the play was fantastic.

I’m with you MJGMA. What good is a win, if it’s a trick? It’s one thing to fake a hand-off once the ball is snapped. But they clearly disarmed the other team by thinking there was some sort of penalty or some other problem. It’s an un-earned goal to me.

It’s not a legal play. You’re not allowed to fake the start of a play at any level of football.

Using trick plays in a middle school football game is also pathetically sad on the coache’s part. Especially ones that he knows full well are illegal, and rely on incompetent officials that don’t know the rules.

SILVER the other plays you described aren’t the same. The ones you described are all misdirection plays that take place during the normal course of a play. They seek to take advantage of the fact that a team will be too aggressive and over commit.

This play was trying to make them think the play hadn’t started yet (which is not legal in any level of football FYI). Light years apart. This is bush league, especially in a middle school game.

@ Rowgue Sure looked like the line set and the center gave the ball to the QB to me. As far as I know, that signals the start of play where the ruse took place. And while the subtleties of what makes a legal snap is not my expertise, I don‘t see how you think it’s not a legal play. Certainly one that only works in a kids game where the basics are still being learned. I’ll bet no one on that defense will fall for something like that again!

@SILVER You are not allowed to attempt to trick the opposing team into thinking the play hasn’t started yet. It’s bush league, unsportsmanlike, and illegal.

This is awesome… having played sports around that age, I remember plenty of times when something unscripted would happen and the entire team would sort of look around for direction. I half wonder if it wasn’t some sort of mistake, with the kid just seeing a chance to sprint for the touchdown out of nowhere.

When I was in high school, our football coach made a point of doing one really exceptional play each season. I remember one season the team couldn’t catch a break, so they huddled up on the line of scrimmage, off to one side, and the center stayed with the ball (it was a quick huddle, leaving the center with the ball didn’t seem too odd), then the QB yelled “Hut!” and the center snapped the ball laterally to the QB, who ran the ball for a touchdown. After that play, the opposing team always mirrored the huddle to prevent a repeat.

Easy folks…. this play is illegal in both high school and college. Most youth leagues operate under the National Federation (high school) rules and this play, and other variations, have been deemed illegal for years. Some youth league coaches still try it, thinking they are the next NFL geniuses….

This usually will only work if the offense appears to be acting as if the play has not officially started. The defense becomes confused with the banter that is coming from the offensive players as if they are using a time out or are simply delaying the game with the officials’ approval. Cunning to say the least!
