A Texas state legislator has written a letter to Mexican President Felipe Calderon asking for reimburse for the services the state provides to illegal immigrants.
State Rep. Lyle Larson, a Republican from San Antonio, sent the letter in late March, saying Texas spends between $6 billion and $8 billion a year on the estimated 1.6 million illegals in the state, including for health care, education, housing and incarceration.
He admitted to San Antonio’s KSAT-TV Texas probably won’t see a check from Mexico anytime soon, but said he hopes the letter will start a dialogue between the two countries.
“We need to sit down and figure this out from an economic viewpoint,” Larson told the San Antonio Express-News. “I don‘t believe anybody I’m aware of has asked the people in power in Mexico for compensation.”
In lieu of cash, he suggested Mexico allow U.S. companies enter mineral-rich areas of northern Mexico and collect the resources as a kind of in-kind payment, KSAT reported. Such a deal could benefit both the Texas and Mexico economies, he said, as the companies could employ Mexicans.
Larson told the station Calderon received his letter because the Mexican consulate in San Antonio contacted officials in Austin to follow up on the request.
A spokesman for the Mexican embassy told the Express-News neither the embassy nor Calderon has received the letter.
Larson previously filed a bill that would require agencies and organizations that receive state funding to determine citizenship status before providing services.
In August, Texas Gov. Rick Perry billed the federal government nearly $350 million for the state’s cost of incarcerating illegal immigrants, three days before launching his ill-fated bid for the GOP nomination for president of the United States.

Posted on April 5, 2012 at 9:39pmIf it costs Texas between $6 billion and $8 billion a year on the estimated 1.6 million illegals in the state, including for health care, education, housing and incarceration. Wouldn’t it be more cost effective to deport them. Travelocity offers a economy one way trip for $449 from Dallas,Tx. to Mexico City, Mexico.

Posted on April 5, 2012 at 12:41pmIf Obamacare will mandate that you pay for insurance, or fine you until you do, what happens to all the illegal immigrants that show up to the Emergency room? Will there be a desk outside the entrance where they will be required to purchase an insurance policy before being allowed to enter? The answer is no. The issue, THE issue, of most concern to residents of the Southwest is stopping the flow of illegal immigrants, including Hezbollah and narco-terrorists, into the U.S. Wake up Congress, we need our Army out of Afghanistan and positioned along the border. I addressed that last statement to Congress because I trust our President about as far as I can spit.

Posted on April 5, 2012 at 12:11pmThey could fine the companies hiring them all, that law is already on the book. Newsflash…This Administration doesn’t enforce it worth a damn! ICE recently caught a horde of them, and this sorry for an excuse of an Administration is trying to pass out passes to allow them to remain. They’re hoping to secure as many votes as possible. Why is it that nobody can see their plan in this situation? Obama as ticked off the “white working class” for the “struggling Latino” vote. He’s hoping he can secure more votes int he southwestern states to offset the loss.

Posted on April 5, 2012 at 12:08pmI don’t understand why we continue to support illegals? Nowhere in the Constitution, no matter how hard you try to twist it, does it say that citizens must provide support for people who enter our country illegally.
I would rather spend billions closing the border and deporting criminals than billions supporting them while they remain here illegally.

Posted on April 5, 2012 at 12:05pmAn alternative would be for the State to capture illegal aliens and put them to work on freeway cleanup and other public projects to help defray the costs for them and their fellow Mexican citizens here illegally… I wonder how many minutes that would last before Eric Holder was suing Texas and filing a restraining order in federal court? Of course, the justice department might need to assign some of their lawyers who are currently being tasked with approving the tens of thousands of deportation waivers to that project….
Anyone else get the feeling that it’s time to scrape the Federal Government and work on building a strong Republic of States again?

Posted on April 5, 2012 at 11:59amThe only way to stop so called “illegals” (not what they are called here), from crossing into the US, is to shoot them on sight. They have proven they can and will go over around or under fences, but i have yet to see a dead illegal get up, and zombie his ass across the border.Yea sure, lets fine businesses that hire them, but if you do, make sure it hurts them, and makes them stop hiring these people, say maybe 1mil. a head .There is plenty of labor to pick crops, and do the work, most wont do,our prisons and ghettos are full of able bodied labors.Truth is, not one politician has the balls to make something like that happen…….

Posted on April 5, 2012 at 11:32amHow abuot sending the bill to the companies in the USA that hire the illegals? The propblem with immigration will never be solved until you go to the source, the people hiring illegals. Its like the war on drugs going after drug users but not the dealers. Go into every factory, farm and construction site and fine the owner for each illegal employed and it will stop . Then they can actually hire an American worker.
Sad fact is none of this will ever happen since our economy has been built on cheap immigrant labor since the begining. If we actually paid americans a decent wage to do these jobs the cost of our good would triple . So we need to accept immigration since none of us want to go pick fruit in 100 degrees for $3 an hour

Posted on April 5, 2012 at 11:30amSome of the things Mexico has pulled along the border and involving the “illegal issue” are simply acts of war. Had Texas been it’s own nation again…we would have already invaded mexico and won. The democrats and some republicans in the US Congress are being paid off by special interests to igonore the problem. Afterall…’it is just the south and the Southwest…it is not happening in New England’.

Posted on April 5, 2012 at 11:42amAgreed, Texas should be taking one out of the One’s playbook and suing the federal government for reimbursement for the costs, because the feds won’t enforce those inconvenient laws that are already on the books. Now Clownitano and the Czar of Wordsmithery have come up with a new terminology for illegal immigrants: “unlawful presence waivers.” She should talk to Shane Bauer and friends about how other countries treat illegal immigrants. They are immigrants not aliens, because they are from this planet, although I wonder if the occupants of the White House might not be aliens.

Posted on April 5, 2012 at 11:51amSo we just take it out of the Fedweal Treasury? God you people are so dumb. When you go to the store do you take money out of your right pocket and put it in your left pocket before you buy something?
If we started closing the doors of the companies that hired illegals this would stop. Maybe prison time for those who own the companies to wake them up…just a threat would do…You could fine them , but they just raise their prices and are still cheaper than the honest business.

Posted on April 5, 2012 at 11:14amIt isn’t until Mexico is hurt financially that its government will fully help with the flood of illegals. Good for this rep, although it is only a symbolic gesture. Let’s hope it does open a dialogue.

Posted on April 5, 2012 at 11:06amI wouldn’t send it to them directly, that’s a symbolic gesture. I would process it through the bank that holds/processes their money. Posted on April 5, 2012 at 10:53amThis has been my stance since the beginning. Charge the country of origin a fee for every illegal immigrant that we have to deport back to their country. Also, bill that same country for every service we provide. I guarantee you that the problem would be fixed almost over night. No fence needed.

Report Post »And how would you collect the money? You honestly think, messico would willingly fork over some cash?
Firebrand
Posted on April 5, 2012 at 12:32pmThe money is collected from a third party who then holds the debt. That debt still exists whether the country being charged pays it or not. If they don’t pay, their currency value decreases. If they print money to pay it off, their currency value decreases…etc.
Report Post »Firebrand
Posted on April 5, 2012 at 12:41pmFor instance, we start taking the money from the other country’s account at the Reserve Bank in New York. The bank then holds the difference (debt) which has to either be paid back or defaulted on. If the cost of the fees and services are made universal, and the US is charged for every one of our illegal immigrants, a debt swap system can be setup so that each country pays the difference.
