Texas Teacher Fighting for Job After Telling Student ‘Go Back to Mexico’

Texas Teacher Shirely Bunn Fighting for Job After Telling Student Go Back to Mexico

Shirley Bunn (Image source: AISD.net)

A Texas teacher is fighting to keep her job after she told a student “Go back to Mexico.”

Shirley Bunn, a math teacher at Barnett Junior High School in Arlington, Texas, acknowledged she lost her temper on Sept. 30 while handing forms out to students in her class, Dallas-Fort Worth’s Fox 4 reported.

According to public records, a disruptive student was repeatedly requesting a form printed in Spanish by saying, “I’m Mexican. I’m Mexican.” Bunn, a two-time “Teacher of the Year” with 24 years of teaching experience, attempted to tell the student he could get the form in the office but he continued to repeat, “I’m Mexican.”

“[Then] go back to Mexico,” Bunn shot back.

She was immediately placed on paid leave the day of the incident and is still waiting for the school board to rule next month on whether she should be reinstated. An independent hearing examiner said Wednesday he believes she should return to her job.

Examiner Jess Rickman III said in a 32-page opinion to the board that Bunn, who has taught at Barnett since 1999, has had “superlative” performance reviews and her remarks “do not rise to [a] level of good cause” to fire her, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

Bunn said she was “thrilled and relieved” by the opinion and that she regretted her remark the moment she said it.

“It was almost instantaneous. I thought, ‘God, I don’t believe that came out of my mouth,’” she told the Star-Telegram. “It was a very, very hard week, the end of six weeks. It was late in the day. It was a Friday. We were on the third day of the first curriculum assessment and I knew it wasn’t going well. It was just an extremely bad day.”

The school board could still reject Rickman’s assessment and opt to terminate Bunn, though her union representatives do not believe that is likely, Fox 4 reported.

Teacher – you can’t do that – this illegal has more rights under Obama interpretation of the Constitution than you do – he is a Democratic Voter.

There is good news – Obama is going to make the Tooth Fairy pay for your Birth Control Pills – and ALL the Women taking BC are now shouting the immoral words – OBAMA! OBAMA! OBAMA! Momma can now buy a new pair of shoes.

Next Obama is going after Men who are burdened with the cost of Plavix. And All the Man taking Plavix will soon be shooting OBAMA! OBAMA! OBAMA!

Obama is a Genius and American’s are his “Useful Idiots”. Hitler promised all the Jews in Germany a safe place where the Russians would not hurt them – and all the Jews shouted Hitler, Hitler, Hitler – how did that turn out!

Is there a possibility that Satan – I mean Obama may be lying just to get votes. No I’m a Nut Case – my God is not Obama – I follow Jesus! I may be nuts, but their is nothing Obama can do for me and my family to make me sell out America and my God.

Yes, the mexicans were there first, and before them it was indians. The mexican is a mix between the spaniards and indiginious populations.

Either way, we kicked off into their butts, and now it is US land, not Mexico. It is kind of the American Way. As a matter of fact, it is the way of the world. Through out history, differnent nations have controlled differnt pieces of property.

Kind of funny how the libs are all bleeding heart for Mexicans and Native Americans, but they do not see Israel as having a right to Palestine, even though they were there first. Go figure.

But, there is nothing that I despise more than somebody saying what they think and feel and then groveling for their job afterward. “I can’t believe that came out of my mouth”. Please don’t make a fool out of yourself lady. They are going to make you apologize, cry, grovel, go on the morning talk shows and then, in the end, they will can your ass and laugh. JZS, it was Mexico first? Yeah, for all of 27 years! For 300 years our Southwest was part of New Spain. In 1821 Spain relinquished their territories to the newly created “Mexican Empire” in the Treaty of Cordoba. In 1848, after 27 years of instability and fighting, Mexico ceded their northern territories to the USA in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. So for a shaky 27 years our Southwest was part of Mexico. I say that doesn’t impress me much.

I’m in Garland, TX, just outside of Dallas, and you would be amazed how few whites (and even blacks) there are in the school system. We’re overrun with hispanics. Oh, I’m sorry, my son informed me that “hispanics” is a slur, because it means under the rule of Spain. We can’t say Mexicans because that implies they all look alike, and there are several different countries involved. We can‘t say latino because they’re not all from Latin American, and again, it implies that they all look alike. And you can’t even say immigrant, because it implies illegal. My son is being forced to read a book (and the report will be the same as 2 test grades) that has the front of the book dedicated to a Spanish slang dictionary, so when he doesn’t know the word, he can look it up because half the dialogue is in Spanish. The only time I read Spanish was in Spanish class in high school, which they start here in the frist grade. We’re forced to speak Spanish, while they barely learn English, and we bend over backwards to accomodate THEM. She’s right, if he‘s going to insist he’s Mexican, he can go back to Mexico. Now if he had said I speak Spanish, No hablo Englesh? whatever…my Espaniol es un poquito.

I love how quickly we go off on tangents on this site. No where does it say this guy is illegal, only that he can’t speak Eglish. No where does it say the teacher said ALL MEXICANS should go back to Mexico, only this one. Your true colors really show when stories like this come out and we wonder why liberals think conservatives are racists. That’s because most of you are a bunch of ignorant hicks a talk out of your asses regularly.

The fact this guy doesn’t know English is not his fault entirely – it is the fault of the school system for having the ESL crap instead of English immersion like we had decades ago. This works. It assimilated “Mexicans” like myself into the American way of life which was the intention of the country’s founders. I also believe this teacher was only frustrated and didn’t say anything with any sort of malice. The fact remains she said it, it was wrong, and she’s coming clean and apologizing. As far as I’m concerned, we should move on.

The child was disruptive and rude, and instead of being punished he probably now feels empowered. He needs a good behind-the-woodshed minute to remember to mind his mouth when speaking to your superior. This teacher obviously erred in her comment, but she’s apologized and has shown remorse for that mistake.

The underlying issue here though is that teachers now have to deal with the constant strain of teaching these “immigrant” students while being expected to meet the “Mexican/Spanish” needs, as well as teach all of their other students. States need to set a law that English is our language, and while other languages are welcomed, appreciated, and encouraged in general, in the public, government funded school system English is to be taught, learned, and used as the mandatory language.

If this child can’t speak or read English then he should be put into a remedial class. How could he possibly do any other class work in junior high if he can barely speak or read English?

Empowered is right. It makes me wonder how much of this is planned. I live in a town that is now half hispanic, and one thing I’ve noticed is the playing of loud Spanish music outdoors in the summer — from car stereos parked in people’s driveways. Neighbors complain to the police, the police come, talk to the people, the people turn down their music, the police leave. Then in a little while they turn the music back up. Sometimes they play their music softly, for hours, then for a few minutes, REALLY LET IT BLAST. Just when it’s time to call the police, the people turn the music back down. This goes on all summer. Am I being paranoid or is there a conspiracy afoot by Hispanics to dominate this country — with seemingly unrelated and petty disruptions?

I also came close to losing it when, after I scrounged up real job applications to try to make the reading and writing I was teaching relevant, the Hispanic students I was teaching, many illegal, said, “I don’t want to learn to fill out applications. The prog goons do not care if she was a good teacher or not. They care about what she THINKS, not what she does. I do not feel sorry for her one bit. In my opinion, most teachers, but not all are the enemy of the American people. They actively participate and coordinate the systematic brainwashing of our kids and try to turn them against their parents on a daily basis. Screw her and the goons. We will see all of them on the battlefield.

Every time I see a story like this, I see scores of angry responses, but those responses are full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. Those of you who don’t have children, or who are homeschooling or paying for private school, you can stop your ears now, I’m not talking to you. I’m talking to the vast majority of conservative and/or Christian parents who vociferously protest this kind of behavior and then get up and send your kids to public school on Monday. Your actions are showing approval while your mouth and your typing hands protest. As long as you keep doing that, that ACLU, the Teacher’s Unions and the USDOE will keep doing this crap. The day they stop doing it will be the day they start losing 100,000 public school kids every time they do it. When you put your money and time where your mouth is, pull your kids out and homeschool or pay for private school, they’ll stop approving illegal immigration through the schools, stop attacking Christianity through the schools, stop policing kids lunches and stop pressing the PP and Muslim agendas through school. They’ll probably start singling out homeschoolers for persecution, but it they lose 100,000 more every time they attack a homeschooler, they’ll quit that too.

Great comment, JANEDOUGH1. You’re exactly right. We are homeschooling parents, and we hear so many of our neighbors, church friends, and community members complain about the school systems here, but then they continue to teach in and/or send their children to the very schools they’re complaining about!

I understand there are situations where public school is necessary for some, but for most of us the truth is that we’re simply not willing to make do with less money or things, and/or put the effort into teaching our children ourselves.

I just see so much hardship and hands financially tied during this continuing “great recession”. unfortunately this is what the liberals want. our hands all so tied we become reliant on the status quo

I have schooled my children all 3 ways, homeschool, private and public, and they all have their pros and cons. I preface my comments with that so you understand I am not anti-whatever. What you fail to understand is that you are not withholding your tax dollars from Texas (or other states) by withdrawing them from public school….you are simply paying double for education. So the idea that removing your children as students from public education will break the system, is a misnomer, and in fact is the exact opposite of what needs to be done…instead of abandoning the system, Christians and conservatives should be infiltrating it, and overthrowing the bureaucrats and political correct police that rule our public places. And this teacher deserves to be fired for apologizing as if she said anything inappropriate. What did she say wrong? He kept saying he was Mexican, she only affirmed his preference. Who has defined that as the most taboo thing to say and when did that get written in the teachers handbook? Teachers are held accountable to the most petty things-time for good men to stop abandoning them.

Wow! Your are so naive! Some of us dont have the luxury of being able to stay at home to home school nor do we have the funds to pay for private school….you obviously dont have kids cause you obviously dont know how much private school costs or how much it takes to raise kids. Public school is paid for by MY tax dollars and since it is money that I have earned I should get some say in what happens in the classrooms! @AGGIEKATE

I certainly understand that as taxpayers we still pay into the public school system, as well as the costs of homeschooling our children. However, we have written continually and are working with our state representatives to propose legislation that allows homeschooling families to receive a “tax break” for the proportional amount of funding that is alloted to the public school system by state governement. It’s a very long process, full of complicated details and probably a long way off from actually being accomplished. However, we are well aware of the situation and working to ammend it.

Secondly, while I agree with you that we as Christians should not completely section ourselves off from society, education is not the area to be relenquishing our children. Just because a teacher claims to be a Christian or conservative, etc. etc. does not mean that what they actually teach or imply in the classroom will be up to the Biblical standards we believe must be taught. For us personally, this is the defining priniciple of the issue.

Again, I understand not everyone can be at home to formally educate their children, but I do believe many more of us could if we chose to put the education of our family before the size of our home or day-to-day ‘luxuries’.

Tony, you are precisely right, but my neighbor is a single mom, running a cleaning business at night and homeschooling by day. I don’t know when the woman sleeps, but she thinks her child’s future is important enough to make that big of a sacrifice. I suspect there are very few who actually can’t. And the poise, polish and wisdom of her daughter show that the sacrifice is worth it.

They cry abuse in a case like this , then they complain their kids cant read! Who could teach a kid to do somthing he doesnt want to with out the authority to make him obey! Greeneyes, I am a homeschooler. I know exactly what I’m talking about. I’ve also been a public school teacher. It takes a lot of sacrifice to do it, and we don’t have much, but my child’s future is too important to trust it to people who treat her as a pawn in their agenda.

Aggiekate, I understand that means I pay double for school, and they still get their money. But you don’t seem to realize that money for butts in seat is not the only thing they are after. They also want the hearts and minds of your child. They want to teach your child that they are weak, and that abstinence is an impossible goal. They want to teach your child that rampant rutting as young as eight is normal, and abortion is the only way to be sure that you won’t be “punished” with a baby. They want to teach your child Agenda 21, and that world is going to come to a screeching halt unless 5/6th of our population dies and is not replaced. They want to teach your child that the free market is a bad thing, that animals should be worshiped and children killed. They are producing far more dropouts, addicts, sex offenders, suicides and otherwise hopeless young adults. They are producing young adults who think single parenthood is normal, and folks who marry are religious freaks. If you take those hearts and minds away from them, it will destroy their agenda. They may have money, but they can’t produce an army of malcontents.

Many of you are correct, local tax dollars go to my school whether or not my child is there. However, in the first few weeks of school there is a head count. Federal dollars are based on that number. So yes, if you keep your children home, the school loses money. I too was a public school teacher that now homeschools. It can be done on one income. We live a much simpler life with many fewer “things” that seemed so important before. If you are a Christian, or even just conservative, I implore you to think again about homeschooling. Janedough is right, this is about the hearts and minds of our children. It is impossible to raise the next Washington, or Jefferson if they are being bombarded with anti-God, anti-family messages 8 hours a day 9-10 months a year. It is hard to battle that on evenings and weekends. If you are Christian and thinking about bringing your children home, please get a copy of Indoctrination and watch it. It was really well done and offers historical information about school, and a Christian perspective about public school and homeschooling. http://indoctrinationmovie.com/

I like to second your opinion. My husband and I made GREAT sacrifices so I could stay home and homechool my two oldest sons. Our newest vehicle is a ‘01, I proudly shop at thrift stores for children’s clothing, and with great appreciation I accept clothing from friends to cloth my children. Too many people today confuse children’s needs and wants, and then claim they can’t afford to stay home because everything is so expensive. Yes, there are some families that actually have to have both parents work, but if you are able to downsize and one parent stay home, you should do it. After doing this for almost two years, I would not want to live my life any other way! And you are right, if more parents voted with their feet, you would see a change in the public school system.

I absolutely agree with you! The teacher did not say ANYTHING wrong. She is a math teacher and she just gave a logical answer. If you keep saying “I’m from …“ then logical thing to say is ”go back to …”.
I came here from former USSR in 1991 with absolutely no English (had to leave our homeland or risked to be murdered) and $400.00 in our pocket. I said “in our” because there were four of us – my parents, my brother, and I. We have NEVER implied that we were entitled to anything because of who we are. We worked hard, learned the language, got the education and now we are pretty much successful in our lives.
I could never understand how is it that our government allows this to happen…
Teacher should not apologize to anyone.

I’ll go off on a little tangent here.
I also can not understand the catering to minority groups. There should be no minority groups. You are either citizen of this country or you are not. If you are, then follow the rules and regulations that the rest of us are following. If you can borrow money at 2.5%, then all of us should be able to borrow at 2.5% (of course, assuming we are in a same financial situations and have similar credit scores), I do not care if you are red, yellow, white or black with purple polka dots. If you can do it, then I should be able to do it without being afraid of prosecution or other type of harassment from the government.

      Just my opinion.

I agree with AggieKate. Public Education isn’t bad, it’s broken. Let’s fix it! Our system of government isn’t bad, a few bad nuts are trying to break it. Don’t throw it all out. Fix it! Take the control of our schools away from the feds and put it back into the hands of each state. Let people decide in their own state what is best for their children.

Mil-dot, your assessment that most teachers are evil libs probably depends on what state you live in. Almost all the teachers I have worked with in Utah and now Wyoming are great, patriotic people working their tails off to help students be successful. The opposite may be true in other states, I don’t know. I have never seen the liberal brainwashing that many claim. I do agree that the national teacher’s union is bad news! They support (and fund) every left-wing cause that most of us here oppose. My students and I recently had a great discussion on the problem with these OWS clowns wanting to be given everything for free. My students know the value of hard work. Also, you should see them stand, place their hands over their hearts and proudly pledge their allegiance (every word of it) to the United States of America!

Let’s fix what has worked for us in the past! Public Education isn’t churning out free-loading, brain-dead liberals, the people in charge of it are. Why are the older generation folks (who almost all went to public schools) not left-wingers? Because it hasn’t always been like this. L

My Two Cents, I know exactly what you mean. I grew up in Mexico with American parents. It is considered there to be the height of rudeness and worst of all manners to speak in a language that others cannot understand if you can possibly avoid it. No teacher gave me an inch when it came to that rule so, though I was seriously challenged at my second language, I learned Spanish in self defense. All the while knowing we would return to the USA. This population plans to stay here yet refuses to blend into our culture.
My ancestors helped settle Texas in the early 1820s. Mexicans were few and far between and the ones in Texas were sick of their calls for help against the Indians going unneeded so they were happy to have American troops help them out. Think if the Alamo. What percentage of the population there was “Mexican?”.
No, this is our third war and it has been completely ignored. My family was sad to leave Texas but glad to hear English again. It cost us a lot to start over. Anybody out there care about the legals in rural Texas? No one in D.C.

There are huge chunks of the city where everything is in spanish, the billboards, stores, etc. There are massive drug busts that always boil down to the mexican drug cartels that happen quite often. It is really upsetting, but the worst part is that the illegals all drive 10-15 mph under the speed limit. I don‘t know if it is because they can’t drive the signs or they really don’t want to be pulled over haha

Perhaps they are driving 45 km per hour instead of 45 miles per hour. Just south of Tucson, the signs indicating distance are all in kilometers.

She does NOT need to apologize! I live in Dallas—a sanctuary city—–and this illegal in line at Target refused to speak english and the black cashier didn’t speak spanish and so we had a “mexican stand off”. The illegal would not budge until she had someone to speak spanish to her. I am so sick of this crap!

This is happening because NO POLITICIAN has had the courage and conviction to do anything about the situation.

Hey, if it wasn’t for illegal immigration we wouldn’t have the great state of Texas in the first place. The Republic of Texas was founded by illegal immigrants who came in from the United States.

If he is Mexican, call ICE and have his entire family shipped back. Get these foreign invaders out of here. Why do we have a military if not to stop a foreign invasion of our homeland?

You do know ICE is federal right? They have verbal orders to not deport voters until late in the year/ post November. But the good thing is now the Mehicans are involved in an assault on our 2nd amendment, because they cannont enforce any of theirs. Viva los frijoles.
