PASADENA, Calif. (TheBlaze/AP) — At the beginning of the week, NASA tested out communication with Mars sending a “interplanetary voicemail” from Administrator Charles Bolden from Earth to Mars and back. Now rapper Will.i.am has premiered his new single – from Mars.
The NASA rover Curiosity beamed to Earth his new song, “Reach for the Stars,” on Tuesday in the first music broadcast from another planet, to the delight of students who gathered at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to listen.
Hear the song for yourself:
The song had been uploaded to the rover, which landed near the equator of Mars, and played back – a journey of some 700 million miles.
The musician, who promotes science and mathematics education, was among more than a dozen celebrities who were invited to JPL to watch Curiosity’s landing earlier this month. Others included Wil Wheaton, Seth Green and Morgan Freeman.
In 2008, NASA beamed the Beatles’ “Across the Universe” into the cosmos to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the song.

Posted on August 30, 2012 at 6:45pmNot the popular opinion, but I really liked the song, not sure of the NASA mic check concept, but the song is really good – and I would have never heard it had it not been on the Blaze (not a big Blackeyed Peas fan).
Report Post »!! Just hope the message received by the email recipient doesn’t interpret the music as a threat of invasion! ;-D!!

Posted on August 30, 2012 at 3:38pmThis guy knows his song sucks, and the only way it will get ANY attention is to pull a stunt like this..
Whatever happened on musicians getting famous because they had TALENT??
I used to Mix/Record music for many genres of music… I am glad I got out of that in 2003 when everything had converted to digital… Things like Lady Gaga and B.E.P.’s and ALL C. Rap music have ruined music… If you can still call it that..

Posted on August 29, 2012 at 10:56pmBlack Eyed Peas Rapper? Can we please stick with classical music by dead composers and not living attention whores that could turn out to be a serial killer/pedophile tomorrow? Also “rap” is shorthand for “crap”…

Posted on August 29, 2012 at 6:16pmWhat an awful orchestration!…Who did he hire to record the tracks? the ‘Obama Junior High School Marching Band’? Maybe someone has to be a fan of the “Black Guy Pees” (or whatever Will.i.am calls his band) to appreciate this!

Posted on August 29, 2012 at 6:08pmOK, I gave it a shot – made it halfway through it. It’s not really a rap song and I liked the beginning (I REALLY don’t like rap!).
However, in my opinion, there was just too much processing done on the vocals. It became annoying after a couple of minutes.

Posted on August 30, 2012 at 3:35pmAs a former Board Mixer, ALL music now-a-days is over processed….
You can’t get around it, since modern musicians have no real talent to speak of….
I miss the days of Bobby Darin, and the crooners…. You know, back when musicians had talent…. That ALL ended in the late 70′s….

Posted on August 29, 2012 at 9:03pmAgreed. ‘Rap music’ shamelessly promotes violent revolution, irresponsible/deviant sexual behavior, and the mindless worship of trinkets and trends.
All coming to a planet near you!
What a disgrace that NASA has fallen down to this level.

Posted on August 29, 2012 at 5:41pmWho cares what kind of music it is. Why can’t we feel good about this event? What is the point of whining over the type of music… the music was broadcast from 700 million miles away on the surface of MARS for crying out loud! Another *first* for humankind.. a different kind of data and it sounds great considering what the data went threw to get here.

Report Post »I was afraid with the unmanned rovers, we would lose the benefit of BILLION$ invested in seeing astronauts do somersaults in a no gravity atmosphere and the all-so-valuable wake-up music played for the astronauts, but, alas, our space program has still proven it’s eternal priceless value once again. Thank you, NASA, you make America proud. :o/
