The 5 Biggest Differences Between Operation Fast and Furious and Operation Wide Receiver

Ever since the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee voted in favor of holding Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt last week, the Left has been conducting a public relations push to downplay operation “Fast and Furious” and convince Americans that the failed gunrunning initiative was actually started under former President George W. Bush under the name “Wide Receiver.”

(Related: New MSNBC Host: ‘I Don’t Really Think’ Fast and Furious Is a Scandal)

The insinuation is that Fast and Furious is somehow a continuation of the Bush-era operation. The only problem with that theory is that it’s not true.

The 5 Biggest Differences Between Operations Fast and Furious and Wide Receiver

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney (AP Photo/Charles Dharapak)

Even White House Press Secretary Jay Carney last week attempted to shift the blame from Holder and the Obama administration and onto the Bush administration.

“Everything has been provided to — congressional investigators and that is really the issue, isn’t it? It is how did this operation come about. It originated in a field office during the previous administration. It was ended under this administration by this attorney general,” Carney said during a presser last week.

But even the laziest of fact-checks would prove his assertion wrong.

In no way does that excuse the Bush administration from allowing a poorly-planned operation to proceed. However, the differences between the two operations are stark and should be considered.

(1) First and foremost, operation Wide Receiver did not result in the death of a U.S. Border Patrol agent or an Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer. Fast and Furious did. The guns that ultimately killed Border Patrol agent Brian Terry and ICE officer Jamie Zapata were traced back to straw purchasers related to Fast and Furious. Zapata’s family filed a wrongful death suit against the U.S. Justice Department last week.

Further, officials have confirmed that the guns from Fast and Furious have already killed hundreds of Mexican citizens and Holder has said on the record that they will likely kill many more. The total number of confirmed deaths so far from Wide Receiver: Zero.

(2) Second, Wide Receiver, though flawed, was more of a gun-tracing operation than a gun-walking program. Gun-tracing involves putting specific safeguards in place to track firearms, such as RFID chips perhaps with video or aerial surveillance. Gun-walking is what happened in Fast and Furious, where ATF agents sold thousands of guns without a reliable way to recover them, apparently just hoping for the best.

Some of the guns from Wide Receiver were implanted with RFID chips and were actively tracked electronically. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in Phoenix also implemented aerial surveillance tactics in an attempt to follow the weapons.

However, problems reportedly arose due to poorly implanted RFID chips which were forced into the guns, bending the antennas and decreasing their effectiveness. Cartels and straw purchasers also eventually came up with creative ways to shake tracking maneuvers and overhead surveillance, such as driving in loops for hours until surveillance planes had to refuel.

Those in charge of Fast and Furious took no similar steps to strengthen their chances of recovering walked guns other than recording the serial numbers before watching them disappear in the hands of Mexican drug cartels.

In fact, ATF agents involved in Fast and Furious have previously testified that they were ordered to stand down and not track the weapons even when interdiction was possible and instead “took notes” and let the guns walk across the Mexico border. Watch some of ATF whistleblower John Dodson’s Congressional testimony:

(3) Third, one must take into account the size and scope of the operations.

Speaking to members of the Senate Judiciary Committee earlier this month, Holder said that “three hundred guns” were allowed to “walk” (although note the difference between “tracing” and “walking” above) in Wide Receiver. While there is no evidence that suggests otherwise, the figure is dwarfed by the approximately 2,000 firearms that walked in Fast and Furious. Roughly 1,400 guns were lost and about 700 have been recovered in Mexico and at crime scenes like the sites of Terry and Zapata’s murders.

The 5 Biggest Differences Between Operations Fast and Furious and Wide Receiver

(4) Perhaps the most convincing piece of evidence proving the two operations are separate from each other is the fact that Wide Receiver was shut down in 2007 shortly after it was clear the program was a failure. This was before Obama was even in office and nearly two years before Fast and Furious began.

Fast and Furious wasn’t shut down until late 2010 after the deaths of hundreds of Mexicans, a border agent and an ICE officer.

(5) Finally, unlike Fast and Furious, officials involved in Wide Receiver were reportedly in close contact with Mexican authorities during the operation, though how involved Mexican officials were is not entirely known.

What is known is that Mexican authorities were kept completely in the dark during Fast and Furious, according to the Mexican ambassador to the U.S. Mexico. He announced on June 1, 2012,  that Mexico would be launching its own probe into Fast and Furious.

It should be perfectly clear that both the Bush and Obama administration conducted two separate, flawed operations. One, however, was a much deadlier and larger operation.

If there is evidence of wrongdoing, or false testimony related to operation Wide Receiver, those responsible should be held accountable. But the argument that Fast and Furious is all about “politics” and should just be swept under the rug because the previous administration also carried out a similar program is irresponsible.

A contempt resolution will be considered by the full House of Representatives this week. If lawmakers decide to hold the attorney general in contempt, it will be a first in U.S. history for a sitting attorney general.

What proof is there that Holder or Obama did either? A few years ago I recall some stir about Obama licensing surplus M1s to come in from Korea, and Holder is said once to have gotten all condescending about people who own guns, saying they might be weaned from it the same way smokers have been weaned from smoking. That’s about the extent of their anti-gun record. This is far from a supposed diabolical plot to walk guns into the hands of Mexican drug lords, hoping against hope that some Americans might be killed (because really, who cares about Mexicans) so as to prepare the ground for an all-out Federal assault on gun rights. People who believe this are in fact too dangerous to be trusted with guns. It’s pretty clear that F&F was an effort to go WR one better, without relying on errant tracking devices, The Mexicans were not informed because, after all, who can trust a Mexican? Stupidity, not malignity.

We’ll probably never know despite this supposedly being the “most transparent administration ever.” To be fair to those crazies you’re talking about Obama is on record telling Mrs. Brady, wife of the late James Brady (Brady Bill), that he and his administration are avidly working on gun control “under the radar.” That’s a proovable fact. So, although it’s a jump from A to B I could see why some people may draw that conclusion.

DMerwin: “So what was the purpose of F&F?” I’m as mystified as you are. But I will say that if Obama and Holder wanted to engineer a gun-walking operation that would justify an assault on the 2nd Amendment, letting guns walk to Mexico was a strange way to do it. Why not a less roundabout walk, to Detroit or Atlanta? Why not dozens of Americans dead because of assault rifles bought in Arizona, not just two Border Patrol agents whose lives after all were at risk every day?

I’ve been noticing for weeks that all the lefties have been trying to impart the impression on the American public that it was Eric Holder who stopped gun running – something started during the Bush Admin., making it look like Holder reigned in the insanity started by the Bush Admin.

What’s never said/asked is – After the Bush Admin. ended Wide Receiver, in 2007, who authorized Fast & Furious in 2009? This is the question that Darrell Issa wants answered by Eric Holder. It’s fine and dandy that Holder ended F & F, but who authorized it? Was it Holder? If it was Holder, it puts him “ending it” in a different light.

As much of a failure as Wide Receiver was, it didn’t kill anyone nor was it done without the Mexican governments knowledge, nor were the guns lost.

It all boils down to what was the purpose. Under Bush they put tracking devices in the guns, followed them and arrested over a thousand people. Under O, no tracking devices and no arrests. Plus many more guns. Why were they being paid for by taxpayers, not tracked, no arrests? What was the valid purpose? No amount of spin can provide justification related to law enforcement because this would require following the guns and making arrests. In short enforcing the law. No new intelligence was gained, all they did was arm killers with U.S. weapons. Clearly an agenda especially if you consider this was going on exactly when Clinton was on a crusade to stop the very thing they were doing. I have no doubt Holders goal was to kill an agent for a purely political agenda. I also believe O ordered Holder to set up an agent which happened to be Terry, for a hit to further their political anti gun agenda. This is how the left thinks and functions, so sad Terry had to die but it was for the greater good. I believe the executive privilege was invoked to cover up just exactly this connection and this agenda. Further, If you look carefully at the details over Terry, no other conclusion can be made other than they wanted a dead U.S. agent found with the smoking gun. Again, what was the reason? No attempt at tracking, no attempt at arrests, no attempt to inform the Mexican government. There can be no other possible reason. We are being governed by evil people straight out of Hell.

Why is it assumed all the guns ended up in Mexco and the only crmes they were used in within the United States were the murders of Brian Terry and Jamie Zapata. Iswn’t it more likely the cover up is to prevent the people from finding out just how many murders were committed in the U.S. with these guns. 1,000′s of guns, 250 murders in Mexico and only 2 in the United States? What’s the coverup rely about? Isn’t it likely while the left hand says excutive priviledge tricking us to look more closy at the White house, the right hand continues to bury the real evidence of 100′s of murders within the United States?

    HYPOCRISY….

    WEDNESDAY, JUNE 16, 1999

STATEMENT BY DEPUTY ATTORNEY GENERAL ERIC H. HOLDER, JR.

“As most of you know, I have served as a judge, as the chief prosecutor for the District of Columbia, and for the past two years as the Deputy Attorney General of the United States. I know the harm that guns can do – to individuals, to families, and to communities. My concern about easy access to guns in our society is built on my professional experience and the tragedies I have encountered in my work day life. But even more important, I am a father, and I want to be sure that we here in Washington do everything we can — everything in our power — to make our communities, our schools and our nation a safer place for our kids.”…..

“I don’t know about you, but I sure wouldn’t want to have to tell the parent of a child lost to gun violence that the purchaser of the gun used in the crime could have been stopped from buying the gun — if only law enforcement had had another day to pull their record — “….

“This is not about politics — partisan or otherwise. And this should not be about narrow, misguided special interests. This is about public safety and our children. I call upon those Members in the House to talk to the families that have been ripped apart by violence and to reflect on the opportunity they now have to stop other families from experiencing similar tragedies.”….
