Based on recent reports and the 2010 census, ethnic populations in several major U.S. cities are undergoing severe permutations.

According to 24/7 Wall St., the populations of 22 of the 100 largest cities in America now have minority groups that, when added together, outnumber the once white majority.

This raises some interesting questions, but perhaps the most interesting one is posed by 24/7 Wall St. when they ask whether or not the population shifts have “any implications that state and federal governments should consider to better address economic and other concerns.”

This question is particularly interesting because, according to several welfare state studies, minority groups are at an unfortunate disadvantage in regards to economic and social measures like unemployment, education and median income.

This is not new; it has been the case for many years.

However, what must be stressed is that this is not because of an inherent racism in America (as some would insist). On the contrary, several conservative economists, most notably Milton Friedman, posit that it is because of a misguided compassion (as opposed to racially-charged viciousness) in the form of government intervention that this economic disparity has been prolonged and exacerbated.

When one disrupts the natural state of the marketplace with things like minimum wage laws, no matter how good the intention, they disrupt the natural advancement of the worker (minority or not). (Ronald Reagan said it best when he quipped: “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’”)

This brings us back to the original question: should these population shifts bring about specific local/national economic considerations?

24/7 Wall St. makes the argument that, because different areas have different racial compositions, solutions to joblessness and high unemployment rates may need to be affected through local programs, rather than national ones that treat all regions and cities the same.

They also reviewed the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program’s “State of Metropolitan America” to identify the cities where minorities are now in the majority. The survey found that “Non-whites and Hispanics accounted for 98 percent of population growth in large metro areas from 2000 to 2010. Forty-two of the 100 largest metro areas lost white population.” According to the report, “Smaller metro areas and areas outside of metropolitan regions, by contrast, remain overwhelmingly white.”

It is in the largest cities that the shifting ethnic mix is most notable. The rapid immigration of white populations into the U.S. ended 90 years ago and has been replaced by an influx of Asian and Hispanic immigrants, many of whom now have been here for more than a generation. Similarly, a century ago the black population was concentrated primarily in the Deep South. Many blacks migrated north for industrial jobs in the 1920s and 1930s. Growth in the black population has added to the ethnic diversity of many large northern cities.

This is all a matter of historical record. One should not concern themselves with whether or not a population shift is a “good” or “bad” thing, as it is a morally neutral act, but how best to address the question of ethnic economic discrepancies with genuine concern (emphasis on the word “genuine”).

It is through addressing the latter, rather than the former, that one has the best chance of promoting an efficient and robust marketplace (where everyone benefits). Friedman argued that if one were to promote the natural dissolution of ethnic economic disparity, and allow the free market to dictate an employee’s worth, then the size of government and its ability to intercede “on the behalf of others” would naturally decrease because of the realization that it actually hurts those it is supposed to help.

When that happens, the markets will be freer to operate and they will generate more prosperity for all workers.

And who doesn’t want that?

Go into any of these cities and (if you dare) drive through the areas of minority concentration. What you will see is blight and decline. If statistics are available, I think you would see a concentration of welfare recipients, single mothers, gun and drug related crime, and to use an old term “white flight”. This is the result of liberal compassion, policies, and programs. The destruction of the family unit.

So with that, I have to say that it‘s much more comforting to know that they’re gathering in cities, than moving next door to me out here in the real world.   Just curious as to how many of these non-white “minority” enclaves have long been controlled by the Democrats? Also would be interested in seeing how many of their residents are on welfare or other public assistance, in public housing, etc.
  I bet there is a strong correlation indeed to these “entitlement enclaves of urban prosperity” and the non-white minority Democratic controlled political machines. Time for reparations to those now disenfranchised white minority residents. Or rename California Aztlan either way works out well for the “minorities”.

I gave no information regarding race, or even read the questions. I could have gotten technical and claimed my 1/32 Blackfoot, 1/16 Osage and trace of Cherokee. Great, now that I am an minority, I am automatically disenfranchised, am not as smart as I was 10 years ago, will not be expected to provide for myself and my family as was expected of me 10 years ago……

That is what I have been taught about minorities over my 50 year lifespan.

I will start checking my mailbox for freebies from the government starting tomorrow, will quit my job in the Army, and check out some daytime TV.

It is not ‘racism’ or ‘misguided compassion’ that is responsible for the ‘achievement gap’, as this article suggests. The ‘achievement gap’ is more accurately described as the ‘intelligence gap’.

Northeast Asians (average IQ ~110) out earn whites (average IQ=102) in America.

Ashkenazi Jews (average IQ=112) out earn whites (average IQ=102) in America.

American blacks consistently record intelligence scores about one standard deviation below whites, and have a correspondingly low group income. Hispanics score slightly better than blacks and have a correspondingly slightly higher group income. These are the uncomfortable truths that we have to face if we choose to ‘question with boldness’ American public policy.

IQ testing has now been all but banned outside the armed forces and NFL. Here is the pre-ban data. It suggests that, contrary to the teachings of the New York Times, underachievement in minority communities is not the fault of white people.

  I will say the IQ thing can be very inaccurate, I remember seeing data in college showing the Massachusetts average iq was 1/3 higher than that of those in Mississippi, turned out the Massachusetts numbers were the average for people working on post graduate degrees, while the numbers from Mississippi were average of all 2nd graders.

  We live in a 1 bedroom condo, so does our neighbor 3 doors down…with FIVE kids, mom pregnant again, dad is an alcoholic (reeks of booze all the time) who beats his wife (according to the kids). They have NO furniture but have 2 decent cars and only one income. The U.S. is PAYING THEM TO BREED. Disgusting.
  
  The kids go to the closest school that focuses on Eng as 2nd language. The amazing thing is that all news articles I’ve read show that this helps bring up their scores (level the field) but they don’t report how English speaking children are NOT doing as well as they should….
  
  We‘ve started the actual fight to make sure our daughter doesn’t have to go there…it IS a fight.
  
  Let’s keep being tolerant and give away the country that was so hard fought for.

I would not want to live around a lot of liberals, no matter what color they are. I do not like lazy neighbors, because it gives them plenty of time to steal my stuff while I’m at work. Life is about choices, who/what you choose to believe and what you choose to do with it. People who make a big deal about color are small people with small ideas. I have a challenge to the tea party and it will help to show you guys arent racist ( which is hard to believe looking at posts on this site) . Why doesnt the tea party petition to get DC statehood? DC is a mostly african american city with no rights in congress yet has congressmen. It is taxation without representation . Most think that DC , if given statehood, would elect Dem’s into congress and that is a reason why none on the right push for it. The tea party would certainly change my mind about them if they advocated for DC statehood and given the people of the city an actual voice.

  And in what way would advocating for representation there prove Tea Partier‘s aren’t racist? Someone making the racist claim could just say ‘a blind squirrel finds a nut’ and that it doesn’t PROVE anything.
  
  I think the residents of DC might help PROVE they were not themselves racist by not voting for a mayor just because he was black, even if that mayor had been caught smoking crack and spent time in jail for it. Maybe if they would choose a candidate who was qualified in other ways, besides being black, they could better their own situation through local representation, local solutions.

My, this is exciting!

This is why the United States is such a fabulous country for tourism. Everywhere you go, it’s an adventure with different regional flavor! Our patriotism and national sameness of values and love of freedom is only accentuated by those special physical and cultural aspects of each State, County, City and Neighborhood in the diverse wonderland we call, America.

  Hey whatsyerproblem…good luck with your effort to shame the racists, it is a fun but unsatisfying activity. I tried earlier on the article about serena williams. Apparently she is a knuckle dragging monkey man elitist who needs to be enslaved and re-trained like an animal. Of course she did question an umpire during a tennis match, so obviously she had it coming. I’m tired so I will not join you in your endeavor, but don’t lose heart, some of us are here with you, in spirit if not in words.

In ST. Louis I grew up in the St. Louis County(which used to be the suburbs) and the city was known for its bad crime. By the time I was 15 my mom moved us another 30 minutes west to escape the rising crime in the county area’s. I go back to where I grew up now and I am the minority and the crime rates havent gone down….but i go out west and its a thriving Suburb of STL and my car hasnt been broken into once, the most I have to worry about is the dog next door being to loud.

BTW, anyone know how to shut a dog up…legally:0

  Use a bark trainer, attached to the fence where the dog is, or an electronic trainer (both make a high-pitched noise that gets the dog’s attention.) Should be able to find these at a pet store.
  Or try an old fashioned dog whistle. Blow it whenever he barks. Not sure if that will work for you or not.

  There is a plant commonly known as Mother-in-Laws-Tongue, or Dumb Cane, it was used in the middle ages to mute watch geese, (people used geese to warn them of unexpected visitors), anyway, grind this and feed it to the dog, it is mildly toxic to children, but won’t kill a medium to large dog, unless you feed him a whole plant, but it will stop him from making a sound for several hours, or you could try feeding him a huge dose of laxative, he will be too busy to bark. LOL

The trend goes back to the 1960′s when the Kennedy brothers tried social engineering for their first time. Certain cities were designated as welfare friendly, all economically deprived were gathered in the various cities for social, economic, and political advantage. Yeah, rite. The exact opposite occurred, go figger? Since then, the same “solution” has been tried, and tried, and tried, and we are still trying?

  I am a white male and am now a minority in these cities. I want everything handed to me, I want it for free and I want it now. In reality I want a level playing field where no one gets a leg up on anyone else. We are free and equal. As an employer I always worry about getting sued for some stupid civil rights thing, so I do take that into account on hiring.

These cities are now mostly hell-holes. Welcome to diversity and multiculturalism. Two terms that were invented by communists in the bowels of the Kremlin during the cold war days to weaken America. Thanks to the democrats and other latent communists, those pattterns are still ongoing today….hence…the destruction of American cities.
