The American Cities That Added (And Lost) The Most Jobs

As analysts keep predicting that economic conditions in the country will improve, some claim that it’s not enough to quote national statistics and vague data. Perhaps tangible, localized measures will help paint a clearer picture of where the nation is heading and one of the best is new jobs growth.

Between November 2010 and October 2011, the biggest cities in the country by population added 443,446 jobs. Unemployment in these 250 cities dropped by 7 percent, on average, during the period. Of course, some cities are faring much better than others.

Based on the most recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 24/7 Wall St. examined the cities that added and lost the most jobs.

An increase in the total number of new jobs is good news for the economy. It means that the total number of people working is increasing. And if everything else stays the same, the unemployment rate improves. However, if new jobs are added and the total size of the labor force — those employed or looking for work — goes up too, unemployment actually can become worse. However, 24/7 Wall St. found that, in general, the cities that added the most jobs as a percentage of total employed also experienced improved unemployment rate, suggesting a strong relationship between the two.

The unemployment rate in five of the cities that added the most jobs as a percentage of total employed dropped. Miami’s 13.6 percent unemployment rate last year dropped to 11.2 percent in October of this year, mirroring a 4.2 percent increase in new jobs, the fifth biggest increase in the country. But it is not always the case. In Jackson, Mississippi, the addition of nearly 2,500 jobs was not enough to offset the climb in its total labor force of 3,000. The unemployment rate in the city worsened from 9.6 percent to 9.8 percent.

While cities that are losing jobs should see an increase in their unemployment rate, the relationship is much less consistent. Unemployment will increase when jobs are lost, provided the labor force decreases or remains the same. However, if the number of jobs lost is less than the decrease in the labor force, the unemployment rate can actually rise.

Of the top cities that lost the most jobs, only two saw an increase in unemployment. Surprisingly, the sharpest drop in unemployment was in Vancouver, Washington, a city that lost the fifth most jobs as percentage of the total number of workers. Vancouver lost more than 1,500 jobs, but its labor force decreased by nearly 6,000, mostly from those looking for work. The actual unemployment rate for the city therefore improved.

These are the cities that added and lost the most jobs.

THE CITIES THAT ADDED THE MOST JOBS:

3. Springfield, Missouri
Employed pct. increase: 4.96 percent
Total employed increase: 3,610
Workforce: 82,429
Unemployment rate: 7.4 percent

The employed workforce in Springfield, Mo., jumped nearly 5 percent between November, 2010 and October, 2011. The city has added 3,610 jobs over the course of the past year, and unemployment has dropped to 7.4 percent, below the state rate of 8.5 percent. The city of Springfield says its sales tax revenue increased more than 10 percent from last year. The improvement came in “sectors like restaurants, department stores, and home improvement stores,” according to Ozarksfirst.com.

2. Pueblo, Colorado
Employed pct. increase: 5.3 percent
Total employed increase: 2,432
Workforce: 53,951
Unemployment rate: 10.5 percent

As of October 2011, the unemployment rate in Pueblo was 10.5 percent, a full 2.4 percentage points higher than Colorado’s rate. Over that time period, the employed population in the city increased by more than 5 percent. At least this is an improvement from 12 months ago, when 11.7 percent of the city’s workforce was unemployed. In 2010, Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas opened a plant in Pueblo, adding hundreds of new jobs.

1. Fort Wayne, Indiana
Employed pct. increase: 6.36 percent
Total employed increase: 7,052
Workforce: 129,151
Unemployment rate: 8.7 percent

In just one year, Fort Wayne has added more than 7,000 jobs, increasing its employed population by some 6.4 percent. The unemployment rate dropped from 10.7 percent to 8.7 percent. Fort Wayne added the 11th most positions in the country, eclipsing the natural job growth of much larger cities like San Antonio, Phoenix and Philadelphia. In fact, the Fort Wayne metro area had the fastest job growth, according to The Fiscal Times. “Fort Wayne—which had a 4 percent increase—continues to benefit from the rebirth of auto manufacturing and high levels of defense spending,” The Fort Wayne Journal Gazette reports.

See the other cities that have added jobs at 24/7 Wall St.

THE CITIES THAT LOST THE MOST JOBS:

3. Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Employed pct. decrease: 2.43 percent
Total employed decrease: 2,435
Workforce: 106,391
Unemployment rate: 8.2 percent

Unemployment in Baton Rouge is up slightly, as the city lost more than 2,400 jobs over the course of the last year. The city has an unemployment rate of 8.2 percent, higher than Louisiana’s rate of 7 percent. According to the Associated Press, a portion of the losses have been in the goods-providing sector. But the largest portion, roughly 1,000 positions, have been in the service-providing sector. In an otherwise successful year for the state of Louisiana, Baton Rouge was the only major city to lose jobs over the course of the last year.

2. Spokane, Washington
Employed pct. decrease: 3.61 percent
Total employed decrease: 3,437
Workforce: 100,317
Unemployment rate: 8.6 percent

Spokane is the third city on our list from Washington. This goes to show that, to a certain extent, statewide problems are affecting these local economies. While unemployment in nearly every state in the country declined over the past six measurable months, Washington state had a much smaller decrease than other states, including neighboring California and Oregon. Spokane lost 3,437 jobs last year — the third biggest loss of the 250 largest cities in the U.S. Spokane’s unemployment actually dropped 0.5 percentage points despite the job losses. There have been a series of job losses, including the dismissal of hundreds of census workers, and the firing of 1,000 leisure and hospitality workers in April alone.

1. Abilene, Texas
Employed pct. decrease: 5.62 percent
Total employed decrease: 3,111
Workforce: 56,106
Unemployment rate: 6.9 percent

Unemployment in Abilene was 6.9 percent in October, well below the Texas average of 8.4 percent, as well as the national average of 9 percent. The city is, however, doing substantially worse than it was 12 months prior. Unemployment is up from 6.7 percent, and the city has lost 3,111 jobs, the fourth-most loss over that period among the 250 largest cities in the U.S. In May, a cooling tower manufacturing plant owned by Broadwind laid off dozens of employees. In March, 178 local teachers were fired. These small layoffs and a multitude of others like them have brought unemployment in the state closer to the Texas average.

Our small town paper has dwindled to only a few pages.
There are NO jobs listed in the want ads!
I was in the Pueblo Mall 4 days before Christmas… walked past Santa 4 times.. not one child waiting to see him or sitting on his knee! Don’t think they could do that on their smart phones, could they! ?
Small shop owners/employees stood in the open doorways…no customers… guess they were all buying on-line! Sears employees visiting with one another and trying to look busy!
Someone said go to where the jobs are… how do you get there with no money? How do you sleep in your car with a foot plus of snow and below zero temps!
Nothing like getting people to migrate away from their homes and families! More family destruction!
Economy is picking up? Jobs are improving? In whose dreams!?
Obama and his puppet masters are finishing off the destruction of America!
It’s time for a whole lot of Protectionism!
And to clean house in DC and State Capitals!
If we don’t save it soon, there wil lbe nothing left to save!

Maybe we should be considering a WATER pipeline. I’d much rather eat than drive.

I have to add some weight to what ME said. Anyone who thinks an election in 2012 is going to save this country is sadly mistaken. There are so many people in this country that will burn cities to the ground if we try to make changes. Saving this country will not be peaceful and it will not be quick.

Couldn’t agree with you more. In fact, I believe we have gone beyond the point of no return. Especially in this day and age of instant gratification and the masses thinking they’ve learned all they need to know by watching the CBS evening news. My family and I will keep fighting the good fight and take advantage of opportunities to try to help others see what’s going on. IF there is going to be true change, it will have to start at this level.

We may not be pass the point of no return, but we have too much momentum to stop before the cliff. I almost think it might be better to let Obama take full ownership of this problem. The last thing we want is to have some lukewarm “conservative” to take move into the white house and get credit for the disaster we all see coming.

Abilene is an agricultural city. In case you missed it we were in a record drought this year and a lot of ranchers sold off cattle early, much of the crops died and they did a lot of other things to mitigate losses.

That means no new farm equipment, new trucks, and a lot of kids did without a lot of goodies that they would normally buy. It also means the ranchers went without hiring extra seasonal help.

Most of the losses in jobs there were due to the severity of the drought, so unless Perry was going to subsidize them with money from the gov’t, which you would also probably knock him for, there wasn’t much he could do.

Mexican illegal aliens don’t come to work. For easy commute, they drill tunnels in various borders, bring tons of drugs, climb those fences in the borders and drop into the US land. They come to the USA to delivery their several anchor babies, and then get welfare benefits. This is what the Democrats want. To increase welfare recipients so that they will always win in the election. Right now there are 47 million on welfare. Those are the people receiving food stamps, SSI, Medicaid, free education, This is now the American dream of the illegal aliens.

I’ve never wanted to truly say this, it has always been kinda of a “joke” but now I feel it it is totally true:
California is being take over by illegal immigrants.
here is a link to the story that has been around for a couple of days but I just ran across it today:
    http://www.10news.com/news/30075614/detail.html
    Talk about losing jobs:
ESCONDIDO, Calif. — Delfino Aldama was fixing a customer’s brakes earlier this month when his smartphone chimed with a text message that tipped him to a police checkpoint more than an hour before officers began stopping motorists. The self-employed auto mechanic frantically called friends with the location and drove an alternate route home. The Mexico native had reason to be alarmed: He does not have a driver’s license because he is in the United States illegally, and it would cost about $1,400 to get his Nissan Frontier pickup back from the towing company.

So what happens when this no license having illegal alien crashes somebodies car on a test drive? What do you think the insurance company would say? Sorry but you let an unlicensed person drive your car so we are not taking your claim, as a matter of fact well will now be dropping your coverage. Have a nice day.

Its ludicrous that we (at least today) have immigration laws in place that are not viroursly enforced, then when the poor come in droves we give them housing, food, health care, cater to lack of assimilation, let them ruin our neighborhoods with gangs & lowlifes. - Immediate cuts in all taxes.
    - Immediate review and removal of many government regulations.
    - Immediate cuts in every single government agency and program, with many to be eliminated.
    - Immediately withdraw American troops from the wars.
    - Immediate cuts in all government spending.
    - Troops, wall, drones, cameras to the Mexican border.
    - Immediately open up drilling in America for natural gas, oil, minerals and begin building nuclear power stations.
    - Vote Conservatives (NOT Republicans) in, Liberals out.

Used to be called “Buick City”. Then a new wave came in. Uneducated, uneducatable, slothful, unmotivated, focused on sex and drugs. The city died in a fit a violence. Now it is hell on earth. I hear you Mr McGoo, there are still some good folks in Flint, but the bad guys run the town and have for about 50 years. My grandfather, who migrated to Flint in the 1930′s, at then end of his life sat on the front porch and watched his neighborhood with a 12 guage behind his chair. Stil, his old neighbor had her door kicked in during the night to get a gun in the face so the crook could steal 30 dollars. The 80 year old across the street wasn’t so lucky; raped. Nice way to end one’s life, eh?

I don’t want to hear that it happens everywhere. I know it does. We’re sick. Michael Moore is an idiot and fails to understand what ails society. We once knew justice. Rape, steal, murder and you went down. Not now. Revolving door justice. You have to commit many crimes to be put away.

Flint is a town where the criminals really run things. If you want to be a man and live freely, you will get stomped in Flint. If you hide and don’t raise much of a ruckuss, you can get by, but you’re not free. It means you have to submit. And Flint, just like Detroit, was really nice. Red brick streets, nice stores, factories humming. Then thing changed in the 60′s with the winds of social change. Drugs, sex and anything goes. And an emphasis on music and how good you can dance versus how good you are in school or how nicely you treat your neighbors.

      Reaping what we sowed now.

Anything you tax, you get less of afterward. We are taxing labor by income tax, social security tax and some zoning and planning rules that tells you what your building has to look like, what you can plant around it, how many sprinklers you have to have, inside and outside and a host of other rules. The electrical grid is a problem for may potential industries. Wind mills and solar cells represent a bad investment while it ignores the aging electrical infrastructure. People line up in droves to oppose added electrical capacity. The transportation system is shrinking in its ability to get an employee to an employer in a decent amount of time and at a decent cost. As the time and distance shrinks, the probability of someone finding a job after losing one declines. Moving is not easy when you own a home and are making payments on it. You could get trapped into the problem of paying for two homes at the same time for a long time. I have seen upscale people get around this when they live in different states but work for the same employer by trading houses or renting each others house.

Correction, the Wind Tower is not a cooling tower. It is a wind industry related item, a wind tower.

This country was doomed the moment people figured out they could vote themselves money from the government. Until that mentality dies from American Society, our destruction is guaranteed.

My model is that there are 100 million good, God-fearing Americans. That is more people than in Germany for example. When TSHTF, these folks can regroup. To me, I’d rather swallow the pill now and take the medicine than wait til it gets worse. We gotta ride this out and fix it. It’ll be brighter on the other side. Just going to take some pain.

And not only will the parasite NOT stop feeding, it will feed faster and faster and more and more as it grows…. Hence the deficit going from 250 billion to 1.6 trillion virtually overnight…. It is a beast that must be stopped at all costs, no what, if we continue down this road we will certainly lose this great nation…. But remember the parasite will never ever stop feeding , until it is ripped out by its roots and crushed until dead….im not a Ron Paul guy, but cutting one trillion the first year sounds like a Damn good start !!!

I’m just not buying the numbers. I grew up in Spokane. A “work force of only 100,317? Do you know how many people live in that area? A lot more than that… and what constitutes the definition of “work force” in this study? Employable men and women between the ages 20 and 45? That should cover about 100k.

Census workers? Shouldn’t even be counted. Part time, no future. If a thousand “leisure and hospitality workers” lost their jobs in April alone… What happened to the businesses that employed them? What about all the taxes they used to pay!

I was in Las Vegas for a three week stay in September. I used to live there too. The little strip malls are dying. When a business shuts down the mall owners just lock the doors and leave the retail store fronts as they were, when they can. At least it looks “prosperous” from the street. You can tell by all the sun-faded window dressings, and when you get really close and look through the window, you can tell the front door hasn’t been unlocked for months.

Don’t be fooled by this obvious “bend the numbers” so they show what we think you should see type of article. It just simply isn’t the case.

We as a nation are in deep trouble… I don’t care how you bend the numbers MSM.

Take Abilene Texas…all of the men moved out to Midland/Odessa and other surrounding towns to work in the booming oilfields just down the road. Most of them stil live in Abilene because you cant find a place to rent in Midland. The numbers are skewed badly.

Why do the numbers spinners continue to leave out those who have stopped looking for work but either are underemployed or have given up? Too much heat in the kitchen??? I read this is about 18-20%.

For some Americans not only are you under/unemployed but no one seems to care.

The more I learn about the folks in the DC area the more I believe they are out of touch with We the People…

They are indeed out of touch with the people and care about getting re-elected,power,and money,in that order. The Marxist regime currently in power releases the unemployment numbers so you can bet your life the books are cooked.

I believe the destruction of our economy is being done by design because no one is that stupid,to engage in policies like redistribution of wealth, green energy and socialized medicine it’s all Marxist ideology.Unemployment will get worse and hopefully enough people wake up to rid us of this Marxist once and for all.

As long as we let China do all our work for us we will have unemployment. Have we no pride in our selves? no dignity? we should do our own work and let the Chinese work for themselves.

That is the real kicker, I had twenty employees 3 years ago I have 0 today. I make more money without employees then I do with them. Sure there is a break point but at 25 employees even more rules and regulations kick in and I was not seeing a break point for me to be profitable till around 75. Or just bid and do work that I can do as a solo proprietor with no 1099‘s or W2’s. Even as the economy tanks I turn away more work then I do but I no longer have anyone working for me. Mexico has more freedom then the US and if you believe 2012 holds anything more then more heart ache you are sadly not seeing the big picture. I will stay home before I hold my nose for a Rino so many idiots thinking anything but Obama, that is not the answer we are way past that without real reform this county is done. PERIOD
