‘The American Dream Is Dead’ – Suze Orman

This morning on MSNBC’s Morning Joe program, financial guru Suze Orman announced to the world that the American Dream is dead:

For the record, Ms. Orman estimates her own net worth to be well above $20 million dollars.  One wonders if she lives a simple life?

There is an interesting sidebar to the bizarre preaching of this parsimonious princess, Suze Orman is actually endorsing a theory that has been advanced by Glenn Beck for several years now.  That theory advised Americans to live within with their means and follow the basic Principles and Values espoused by the 9/12 Project.

Speaking of Mr. Beck.  Many on MSNBC (Chris Matthews, Lawrence O’Donnell and even Joe Scarborough) constantly call Glenn a fear-mongering madman.  If Beck is a madman for telling people to live within their means and rely on themselves, what would be the correct term for Ms. Orman?

    I listened to her show quite a bit while preparing to buy my home. I bought one that I can afford and can pay it off in 3 more years. Live within your means.

    I’ve been over to the Huffington Post recently, just to see how the left leaning folks think. It seems most of them are crying about the greedy bankers, corporations, etc., but you don’t hear much about cutting up your credit cards and living within your means (you know, telling the banks to shove it). Mostly, it‘s talk about why can’t everyone earn a “living” wage. I guess to some people, the bus driver making $159,000 a year is living the American Dream.

    I don’t know about anyone else. As long as the idea of “Social” Justice, or “Economic” Justice, or the idea of equal results instead of equal opportunity festers in the public intrest, the American dream will wither and die.

    I think we can call her a Closet Beckhead.

    BTW American Dream is not dead. People just got confused about what it was. Some thought it meant that you could have everything you ever wanted now and somehow it all works out ok later.

    The American dream is to simply be free to follow your passions and be free to profit from the fruits of your labor. People don’t realize what a big deal that is to have.

    Nice cars/home/gadgets are “nice” to have, but not a requirement for a happy life.

      No, Van Jones wants to take from the rich and distribute the wealth. Suzie is suggesting for people to live within their means and not go into debt. She has been telling people to live their financial truth for years.
      She needs to go to Washington DC and give some advice.

    Her feeble thoughts and 3rd grade progressive wish list does not change the fact that we all have to get up each morning, go to work, try to make our dime… and better our lives the old fashioned way. She herself is peddling a book, for God’s sake, so she can drive a better car, buy a better house, wear more expensive bling… she’s a capitalist, in the old tradition, and falls into the hypocritical category of… say, Michael Moore… and all those Hollywood elites… who have made millions working toward their “American Dream,” all the while bashing ours. Stay out of my life, lady. In my opinion, your book is lining for the kitty litter box.

    That may not be the most sound foundation for reasoning but I’m pretty sure it works far, far more than it doesn’t.

    Suze Orman has always been, if you know the biblical term, an “itching ear prophet”, has her pulse on the”flavor or winds of the day, and proclaim that to get a quick following. I prefer to define the American Dream the way the Founders did: To have the “unalienable right” to choose what my dreams are, how big they can grow, or how much hardship I would put up with to make them grow. I will not allow Suze Orman, or ANYONE ELSE, to define my dreams, dumb them down, or limit them. THEY DON’T HAVE THAT RIGHT!!

    The American dream is not about stuff or money. The dream is that no matter who you are, if you work hard and put one foot in front of the other, those dreams can come true. The nightmare is what our government has done and is doing to get in our way. Get our of our way and watch us shine. That is what American’s do and that is why we are the greatest country on this earth. With God’s help, we will recover and no one can stop us.

    From what I understand, Orman and her girlfriend are quite happy,
    Something that would NOT be allowed in a Muslim country.
    So for her, she is living her American Dream,
    and probably praying that Sharia law does not come here.

      And, for the record, MY family IS living the American dream right now…on a single enlisted military income.

      I stay home with our daughter. We have vehicles and can still afford to drive them (though it’s painful to pay so much for gas). We have a comfortable amount of cash each month for luxuries like eating out, books, movies, the occasional, “Mommy can I have this?” etcetera.

      How are we doing this?

      First, my husband has the incredible luxury of job security (military men don’t get laid off). We accept, as a couple, the trade-off we make as a family in lost freedoms. We live where we’re told, go when we’re told, and do what we’re told.

      Second, we have ZERO debt. We don’t get a new car every year. We keep them ’til they’re paid off and take care of them. We have zero credit card debt. We paid for college one course at a time instead of racking up 100k in debt for student loans.

      So now we‘re both in our early 30’s with a family, living the dream. We have financial security, zero debt, and the freedom to buy pretty much anything we want from day to day…because we didn‘t feel entitled to have it all in our 20’s before we’d earned anything; because we didn’t get loans for school; because we didn‘t buy a home we couldn’t afford; because we were sensible, thoughtful, and non-extravagant.

      The American Dream is not dead. It’s just not handed out for free on your 18th birthday with a platinum card and a smile. You actually have to earn it.

      First, thank you for your sacrifice.

      As a 22 year veteran I have been there and done that. My wife and I raised 3 kids while in the military which wasn’t easy most times with the long separations, low pay and living in foreign countries. Lessons learned in the military will carry you throughout your life.

    I don’t believe the American dream can ever be killed, but I think it will have to go into hibernation for a while. If we follow the general path of former empires that have fallen, things will have to get substantially worse in order to spark the hunger for true freedom that is the catalyst for firing up that dream once more.

      i agree, tve gone 55 years and have always rented..homes or apts.For the simple reason that i never wanted to rent from the bank.i no longer get called a looser by my work friends any more….i feal sorry for them all upsidrdown and forclosed on! i give tips too them every day on how to live on a budget,,,its sad

      People living beyond thier means caused all of this. How about saving for 10 years to have 50% down payment so the interest doesnt kill you. how about starting smaller and paying cash, cooking your own food ,washing your car at home, not beeing consumed with every gadget and clothing and hair style. how about staying at home and not going out……NAH its easier to run it up on a credit card and either default of blame it on somone else….People kill thier own American dream because they are not disciplined rather they dont want it bad enough.

      She explains the meaning of the word
      “affordable”
      all the time and is big on savings and stashing money in ways that its out of reach for unwanted luxuries.

      I believe what she is saying is that “ some ” peoples idea of the “American Dream” is dead.The ones that think they want to be filthy rich and lavish. I have watched her shows for years and she has always preached what she is saying now about the principles and values. One of her slogans if I remember correctly is “People first, then Money then things” She does believe in saving saving saving. She has never been much on “THINGS’ She does believe in helping people and charity.She was a waitress and then had a job making a lot of money and lost it,She started over and she still does things alot like she did when she didn’t have so much money.I believe she really does live what she preaches, She does still have a show I don’t watch anymore but I think it is on Sat, Nights.

      The American Dream is dead to those who have lost faith in God and lost the spirit that founded this great country. Luckily for America that’s just the small percentage consumed by a victimazation and collective guilt ideology. Basicly about half the liberals.       It’s also dead in a way to those who view the American dream as a monitary acheivement solely. And not the dream of being free from the government a nation of self governored.       In these days of uncertainty, we have to continue living the American Dream and not fall to the “Progressive Nightmare”. The American Dream will never die because self-preservation is strongly ingrained in all of us. There will never be a lack of people who want to improve their lives through ingenuity and hard work. While others become slugs and live the “Progressive Nightmare” by living off of everyone else, there are even more of us who have the strength to find success on our own.       The dream is not dead, the FANTASY that you can have ANYTHING you want without working for or earning it IS dead. What lead to the entire debacle was the mindset that your house was NOT a home, but instead your bank account. You bet on inflation with your house and you lost. Nuff said. My hubby is in the financial service industry and he cringes when she is on. Her thoughts on being modest with your money are good, but if you hope to live off more than social security and a little to cover inflation, she won’t help you much. Is she still wearing that ONE pair of earrings she owns?

      Honestly, she’s right that the American dream is to thrive on what we make and live within our means. This I think has always been the American dream. To live the life you want without too many people sticking their noses where they don’t belong. The dream isn’t dead. The dream we’re all supposed to have is recognized as not exactly what we want.

      To a liberal, the American Dream is having a government that supplies ones NEEDS so that they can use whatever extra cash they can accumulate to get their WANTS. Al Sharptons idea of the American Dream is taking from the people who work hard to accomplish things and earn the money to fulfill their needs and wants, then giving to everyone who is unwilling to work hard for themselves the very same things. The real American Dream is alive, but it is fading fast due to unfair taxation, burdensome regulation and increasing welfare. The real American Dream grants me the right to work hard to acquire those things I need and as many of the things I want as I can afford. Every other American has the same right to fulfill their dream. The dream is still alive but it is jepordized by the increasing number of welfare recipients who think they have the right to have what I have without working for it!
