‘The Beast’: This Rugby Player Is Terrifyingly Powerful

Tendai Mtawarira has earned every bit of his fearful nickname: They call him “The Beast.”

Born in Zimbabwe, Mtawarira represents South Africa in the international rugby circuit and is renowned for his near-terrifying strength.

And to prove that he truly is “The Beast,” we bring you this video from a Super Rugby league match between the Sharks (Mtawarira’s team) and the Stormers:

Just in case you aren’t convinced that “The Beast” really is, well, a beast, consider this: Anton Bresler, the teammate he picks up and carries behind his head, weighs 247 pounds.

Mtawarira weighs 256 pounds.

“It’s not even that he holds Bresler up. That alone, is not the most impressive part. It’s that with momentum for each guy going in different directions,”  writes The Post Game. “Mtawarira is able to control himself while holding up his massive teammate, and then get mauled by crowd.”

Mtawarira’s team ended the night with a 25-20 victory (it probably helped that they had a guy named “The Beast” on their team).

If the guy thinks he’s tough, or tougher than the ordinary guy. Strap on the pad, and try out for an NFL team. I think he will quickly learn if he’s a good enough athlete. In fact, he’ll have his eyes opened when another 250 pound running back levels the boom on him followed by a 350 pound Offensive guard clearing his path.

He would maul the NFL. Apparently you do not watch Rugby. 40 minute halfs, no timeouts, no huddles, no pausing in game action, all which allow a player to ctach their breath. Very little padding, full contact tackling. Yeah, your right….he would do poorly putting on protective equipment and hitting people as hard as he hits them WITHOUT.

Any sport that has a “blood substitution” is the sport for me. Only reason it hasn’t caught on in the States is because there is no break in the action for commercials (AKA Money).

Rugby is a joke. Its “single cell soccer” with funny lookin’ hats. The over weight dufuses waddle around scrum to scrum waiting for the end of the game so that they can do an “elephant walk”.
Rugby is a waste of time, I’d rather watch a fly drown in my warm beer.

Ive played Rugby, Ive played football. Rugby is not near as taxing on the body. Football, and its pads allow a man to hit at full force. Rugby is more controlled. Hitting hard, is an art, a skill, as well is taking a man down without pads. As far as which sport is “tougher” Football, without question.

      @4xEverything

Football was born from Rugby. Some of the same rules. Biggest differnce is it is the position of the BALL on the field of play not the team. In football the TEAM wants to hold onto the ball so that they can drive it down the field. In rugby it is so hard to move the ball that it is better to kick it down the field and give it to the other team and have the BALL down the field thgan to hold it and try to make a drive.
Other differences: Rugby: No forward passing, can only lateral, but can foot (kick) the ball forward, no blocking of any kind, can not leave the ground(thats why you see them picking up people, the guy lifting is still tech in contact with the ground), a touchdown is really a touchdown, the ball must be placed on the ground and wherever that is done then the PAT happens from that same line perpendicular to the goalposts.

Thats about it. Awesome game to watch.

I have 10 vs 10 years in American vs Rugby. I love ‘em both. Its been said above… two different sports with different skills and requirements (ie in Rugby you don’t have to “stick” a ball carrier ‘cuz he has to let go of the ball). Big differences: Rugby needs about $20 to outfit a boy and USA footy needs about $300: endurance essential in rugby nice little break in Amer version. On the other hand Intricate plays and teamness in American versus ad libbing in Rugger. And so on.

Ok, then unsuit the football team and watch them get destroyed on the pitch by the rugby players. Obviously both would dominate there own sport but having played both it would be a tougher transition going from football to rugby given especially considering the running clock and 40 min halfs.

You are right. Long ago a guy that I used to work with told me of a match in Vietnam (when the Americans and Kiwis were fighting together over there – as were the Australians, I must add, before they tell me off).

First they played rugby, and the Americans lost. Then they played gridiron, and the Kiwis lost.

They are two quite different games with differents skills. Both sports have players of legendary status and neither one is less than the other.

That being said, I prefer rugby as I am more knowledgable about it and appreciate the finer points that non-rugby players might miss.
