The Blaze Fact Checks ‘Weeping Voter’: His Claims Are…

During an “emotional” segment following the results of last night’s recall election between Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett (D), one miserable Barrett supporter said the following:

We just got outspent $34 million to $4 million dollars. This was, this was the biggest election in America and I hope you keep me on tonight because this hurts us all. Every single on of you out there in the nation, if you’re watching democracy died tonight.

I’m very emotional because we all had a lot invested in this. This was it. If we didn’t win tonight, the end of the U.S. as we know it just happened. That’s it. We just got outspent $34 million to $4 million dollars.

Let’s take a look at his claim that Gov. Walker simply outspent Barrett.

First, approximately $63 million was spent on the Wisconsin recall election. Second, the man interviewed by CNN seems to cite the dollar amount raised as opposed to dollar amount spent.

According to the government watchdog group Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, Gov. Walker spent (not raised) about $29 million whereas Barrett spent about $3 million dollars.*

But let’s go back for a moment and look at the amount of cash raised by each campaign.

Gov. Walker pulled in about $31 million (not $34), which is three times what he raised in his 2010 bid for office, according to the Wall Street Journal.

But based on a tally from the same watchdog group as cited in the above, FOX News claims that, along with the $4.2 million he raised mostly from inside Wisconsin, Barrett raised about $14 million from unions, the Democratic Governors Association, and the Democratic National Committee.

This raises an interesting question: if the Barrett campaign raised approximately $18.2 million, why is it being reported that it only spent $3 million?

Bottom line: Although Gov. Walker outraised and outspent Barrett, which, depending on your political persuasion, is either a testament to his popularity or proof of a “vast right wing conspiracy,” the gap between the two campaigns may not be as great as the “weeping voter” would have you believe.

But let’s cut him some slack; he was really emotional at the time. After all, America had just died.

      The money was spent on the ground. In organizing, signs, stickers from Unions & liberals who start their own pacs. They never talk about the money spent under the table by the unions. The buses & permits to rally. I don’t think 14,000,000 was enough to canvas for 900,000 petition signatures, websites, groundwork, gas, charter buses, pins, bail money, attorney’s fees etc… The match was even & Walker won. B.S. on the outspend. Put all the graphs & charts you want up. The Dems spent more. We just don’t know where it all went.

      This turkey is crying now just because he lost. Wait until he sees his paycheck stub with an extra 3% in Union Dues. At first he will think him employer screwed him until they point out that it is in his contract and they have to abide by union rules.Me personally I think the union should pay the taxpayers of the state. If Walker did somrthing wrong it should be on the states dime, but this was all because the wrong guy (in their eyes) didn’t win and the people voted wrongely.

      This demonstrates the relative effectiveness of the Tea Party vs OWS backed by unions or vice versa. The really interesting numbers are public sector union membership under coercion-62,000.
      Wisconsin public sector union membership when allowed to make a choice-28,000.
      Wisconsin Teachers union membership under coercion-17,000
      Wisconsin Teachers union membership when voluntary-11,000
      Sorry Democrats but the union membership voted with their feet.
      Rachel Maddow I hope in this one instance is correct in stating that union money will never be able to elect Democrats again. The problem with (or the wisdom of) her analysis is that people will not vote for the Democrat agenda when NOT FORCED to do so. The 49% who pay no income tax are probably not political donors.
      It is not as if the union rank and file could not contribute to whoever they want, but as the numbers regarding shrinking union membership show about 40,000 former union members in Wisconsin will not have their coerced dues funneled by union leadership to the “approved” candidate.
      Bravo Wisconsin! I might begin to root for the Badgers.

      Why does it matter how much more Walker raised and spent? If he raised more (and then spent more), doesn‘t that mean that more people voted with their wallet in Walker’s favor? Isn’t that freedom? Isn’t that capitalism?

      Why should anyone be defensive regarding who spent what? Why should Walker or his supporters be defensive based on how much more money was contributed to them? To me, that simply proves more people supported him with more money. That’s not bad.

      My Husband is in a union and he stands up to them. During the Obama election in 2008, his union strong-armed him and his fellow employees into voting Democratic. HE STOOD UP TO THEM and reminded them that THAT IS NOT WHY HE PAYS HIS DUES. He was treated horribly because of it. BUT, HE ENDURED these past 3-1/2 years and is now admired for his resilience and honesty. He did his homework and research on what was going on behind the scenes with Obama, etc. and shared it with his buddies. NOW, they see how right he was. Since then, his union has backed off, his Shop Steward quit, and they now have a good Steward who listens to them and does not compromise! THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK.

      What is wrong about asking union members to contribute to their own health care and retirement at the federal employee level? Walker’s reforms ask them to contribute at a substantially lower percentage than federal employees. You know, maybe they should have four months of vacation subsidized by the taxpayers at a resort of their choice, pay nothing for health care or their retirement, oh wait, I guess the teachers unions already kind of have that.

    MoveOn has noticed that their funds are drying up. Could that be because so many are now out of work? Could it be because those of the liberal persuasion are beginning to change their minds? Could it be because there are many who are not better off than they were four years ago?
