Romney Wins Big in Florida (Plus: BLAZE Live FL Primary Results Chat Replay)

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Mitt Romney routed Newt Gingrich in the Florida primary Tuesday night, rebounding from the previous week’s defeat with a commanding victory and taking a major step toward the Republican presidential nomination. Despite the one-sided setback, Gingrich vowed to press on.

“Thank you FL!” an exuberant Romney tweeted minutes after the race was called. “While we celebrate this victory, we must not forget what this election is really about: defeating Barack Obama.”

Returns from slightly more than half of Florida’s precincts showed Romney with 47 percent of the vote, to 33 percent for Gingrich.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum had 13 percent, and Texas Rep. Ron Paul 7 percent. Neither mounted a substantial effort in the state.

The winner-take-all primary was worth 50 Republican National Convention delegates, by far the most of any primary state so far.

But the bigger prize was precious political momentum in the race to pick an opponent for Democratic President Barack Obama this fall

That belonged to Romney when he captured the New Hampshire primary three weeks ago, then swung stunningly to Gingrich when he countered with a South Carolina upset 11 days later.

Now it was back with the former Massachusetts governor, after a 10-day comeback that marked a change to more aggressive tactics, coupled with an efficient use of an overwhelming financial advantage.

About half of Florida primary voters said the most important factor for them was backing a candidate who can defeat Obama in November, according to early exit poll results conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks.

As in early contests in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, that mattered more than experience, moral character or conservative credentials.

Not surprisingly, in a state with an unemployment rate hovering around 10 percent, about two-thirds of voters said the economy was their top issue. More than 8 in 10 said they were falling behind or just keeping up. And half said that home foreclosures have been a major problem in their communities.

Gingrich swept into Florida from South Carolina, only to run headlong into a different Romney from the one he had left in his wake in South Carolina.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, shed his reluctance to attack Gingrich, the former House speaker, unleashing hard-hitting ads on television, sharpening his performance in a pair of debates and deploying surrogates to the edges of Gingrich’s own campaign appearances, all in hopes of unnerving him.

Restore our Future, an outside group supporting Romney, accounted for about $8.8 million in the ad wars, and the candidate and the “super PAC” combined outspent Gingrich and Winning The Future, the organization backing him, by about $15.5 million to $3.3 million, an advantage of nearly 5-1.

Gingrich responded by assailing Romney as a man incapable of telling the truth and vowed to remain in the race until the Republican National Convention next summer. He won the endorsement of campaign dropout Herman Cain and increasingly sought the support of evangelicals and tea party advocates, a former House speaker running as the anti-establishment insurgent of the party he once helped lead.

Bombarded by harsh television advertising, some Floridians said they had soured on both candidates.

“The dirty ads really turned me off on Mitt Romney,” said Dorothy Anderson, of Pinellas Park, adding she was voting for Gingrich. She said of Romney, “In fact if he gets the nomination, I probably won’t vote for him.”

At the same polling place, Romney supporter Curtis Dempsey expressed similar feelings but about Gingrich. “The only thing Newt Gingrich has to offer is a big mouth,” he said.

Voters frequently say they are offended or appalled by negative ads. But polls show consistently that the commercials are able to sway the opinions of large numbers of voters, and they are a staple of nearly all campaigns.

Santorum had no money for television ads to back up his strong debate performances. He left the state at one point, saying he was going home to Pennsylvania to prepare his income tax returns. But he stayed longer than anticipated, because of the hospitalization of his 3-year-old daughter with pneumonia. The girl has a rare genetic disorder, Trisomy 18.

Santorum and Paul both campaigned in Colorado on Tuesday as Florida Republicans were voting. The state has caucuses on Feb 7, the same day as Minnesota.

Even before that come caucuses in Nevada, a state that Romney won when he sought the nomination in 2008 and is favored to capture again.

By contrast, both Romney and Gingrich campaigned across Florida on primary day as the polls opened.

Exuding confidence, the former Massachusetts governor said – even though the figures said otherwise – that he had been outspent in South Carolina.

“I needed to make sure that instead of being outgunned in terms of attacks, that I responded aggressively, and hopefully that will have served me well here,” he told reporters.

Gingrich, combative as usual, said the race for the nomination won’t be decided until summer, “unless Romney drops out.”

More than 600,000 Floridians voted before the polls opened, either by absentee or early ballot, exceeding the figure from four years ago, and raising the possibility of a record turnout. Vote totals in the three contests to date – Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina – have all been records.

    the definition of insanity…. doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result…… looking like this country is starting to fit that definition….. go ahead, vote for the status quo, big government progressives (i.e. gingrich, obama), or big government fip flopper (i.e. romney), or big government establishment neocon republican (i.e. santorum)…… you’d think the last bit of the g.w. bush presidency and the entire obama presidency would have taught the majority that we need a new direction that actually is serious about following the constitution….. anyone that votes romney, gingrich, santorum or obama has no business, ZERO business complaining about the state of our republic, because i said at the beginning of my post, this country has reached a point of insanity….. alot of people have woken up to the idea of individual liberty, limited government, and actually adhering to the constitution, but i’m afraid not enough people have……
    i thought the tea party was about getting back to limited government…. if it was, then, after looking at the records, shouldn’t that movement be rallying around ron paul? but i’m hearing different sects of the tea party going for romney, gingrich or santorum? (granted there are alot of tea party people going for paul too so i’m not railing on the entire tea party)

      realconservative…… i for one, do believe that ron paul is a flawed man….. no one is perfect…… but i do believe that he is less flawed than the other candidates on public policy and adhering to the constitution, which is why i support him….. and btw, comparing paul supporters to obama supporters….. i’m not doing that to people who support the other 3 candidates, so come on now….. maybe there are paul supporters out there that believe he’s perfect, but don’t throw me in that category….. i believe the republican party has lost their way….. i thought republicans were supposed to be about limited government…. where does romney, santorum or gingrich stand on that? they are all for big government intervention. that‘s my point and that’s why my support is with RP….. we can disagree, that’s the beauty of this country, but we are loosing our liberties and non of the other candidates give me reason to believe they will protect our liberties and protect the constitution

      Very insightful
      One of the lessons conservatives must learn should Governor Romney win Florida and go on to win the nomination is to start early to plan and to coalesce around a figure or figures that would run. It seems that the conservative movement thought that a leader would rise and find acceptance by all. Most conservatives I know are almost as threatened by the prospects of a Romney presidency as they are by an Obama second term. The Any body but Obama phenomena would loose 50% steam right after the primaries, if Romney wins.

      Politics has a myopic sight problem. It only allows one to see now, not even two years ahead. In 2008, the right wing of the GOP would easily have taken Mitt Romney over John McCain in a heart beat, but this year, Romney is almost a political anathema of Obama proportions to them.

      Only a handful of political leaders laid proper ground work for a presidential run. Of course that is one thing Governor Romney has done right. So if Romney wins, Conservatives will rue their inability or short sighted error of not preparing for what was obvious all along. And this is why in as much as I love and respect Michelle Malkin, Mark Levin, Glen Beck and many others, their point in endorsing Santorum makes moral sense, but is nothing but political naïveté. (How dare I say so of my heroes)

      Can’t believe people would think Romney who lost to McCain for the nomination should now be the Nominee.The people here are just not involved enough against the establishment.       I WILL NOT VOTE FOR ROMNEY.

      Let the GOP recognize the fact that if they want their to be a third party candidate or for Obama to potentially win this election, keep pushing Romney and Gingrich. I don’t care if either of them end up the winner I will not vote for them. I’ll write in Paul or Santorum or Bachmann, but I WILL NOT VOTE FOR ROMNEY OR GINGRICH.

      There are plenty of us out here that feel that way RINOs, so make up your minds what you want this country to look like next year.

      Romney’s record of winning elections is 1:3, that’s 33.3%. Reagan lost 1 election his entire life.
      Secondly Reagan had a strong conservative record. Romney has a strong LIBERAL record.

      So tomorrow, while Rush would have saved himself from loosing anything from his 20 million listeners, Sarah would have lost a little of her followership. Americans would have two options:

      1. See the political genius that is Rush Limbaugh, or
      2. See the selfless personality of Sarah Palin, for the sake of her country and for what she believes.

      Please do not make this between Rush and Palin. This is not a ‘Diss’ on the ‘Titular head of the GOP. These are the times that try men’s souls, and the worst we can do in the face of evil is to keep quiet, unless a second term of President Obama is not as bad as we make it to be.

      Don’t forget that FL is a closed primary state. All of us that REFUSE to list a party are not allowed to vote. So the majority would be die hard rep. that voted. You know, follow the party line like they told us in 08. The majority of us that are fed up with both parties will not be able to let our voices be heard until the election.

      I will never vote for a big city liberal. We have one in office now. Romney is a big city liberal. He chose to live in Massachusettes, no one forced him to live there. He promoted letting very young girls get an abortion without telling their parents. He was a Mormon then and he is a Mormon now. Therefore I assume the Mormons are OK with that.

      Many people think that Romney is a money man who can solve all our money problems. They are eager to trust him. Has anyone given thought that he may steal our money and give it to his friends like Obama is doing?

If you are confused by Santorum’s stance on Government responsibilities where individual rights are concerned just watch his answer from the last debate stating that Governments role is to protect the rights given to man by God.

      CIRCLEDWAGONS. Talking about Paul and his endorsement of “one of them” … in 2008, most people assume that Paul endorsed Libertarian candidate Bob Barr in 2008, which is partially true. However, that is not the entire story. Paul also endorsed three other candidates. The first of those was Chuck Baldwin. He haD been on record early and often in support of the proposition that the South should have won the Civil War. This sort of thing would ordinarily disqualify most normal people from endorsing Chuck Baldwin, but Ron Paul is not most normal people. And given what most Ron Paul supporters seem willing to forgive, a little Confederate sympathy (or even a lot of Confederate sympathy) seems like small potatoes.

      The second was Cynthia McKinney. Ron Paul endorsed Cynthia McKinney in 2008. For those who do not know, Cynthia McKinney is a certifiably insane anti-American anti-Semitic lunatic. She first came to widespread public attention when she was arrested for punching out a member of the capitol police who tried to stop her when she wasn’t wearing her pin. Cynthia McKinney is so crazy that she got defeated in a primary by a guy who thought Guam might tip over and capsize. McKinney was once arrested by the Israelis while trying to give aid to Hamas and penned a bizarre anti-American and anti-Israeli screed.

      The fourth was Ralph Nader.The same Ralph Nader who also longs for the day when the last vestiges of capitalism have died in America.

      Beck went out f his way to support Romney using Sol Alinski tactics the same way that Romney does. Somehow Beck missed the fact that Romney (on TV) proclaimed his support for having young teen girls get abortions without their parents knowing as long as the government approved. If Newt had ever said such a thing, he would have been hounded by Beck and all the other celebrity and TV network supporters of Romney. This makes me presume that all these celebrities are OK with young girls getting abortions without parents consent as long as they had government consent. This is so over the top that I don’t see how anyone can simply say they changed their mind and now think it is wrong.

      It is starting to really look that way. I wish Newt would drop out — and soon. I am for Santorum. I wished he had run in 2008 (and moaned to everyone around me about Rick Santorum’s absence from the field in 2008). Santorum is the only one I have given money to in the primary campaign. I am very comfortable with Santorum’s conservative “creds.”
      Now . . about Romney . . . I am not at all comfortable with him being the nominee. Do you know what would give me comfort? A list of Romney’s cabinet. People are policy. John Bolton has endorsed Romney, but Gingrich (who is the worst of the 4 remaining) has said he would appoint Bolton as Secretary of State. Why doesn’t Romney do the same? How about picks for A.G., Interior (Sarah Palin would be my pick), Sec. Def., etc.? PEOPLE ARE POLICY. I want to know the people so that I can get a vision of the policy.

      Why isn‘t Ron Paul in there fighting for the Conservative vote if he’s supposedly the only real Conservative in the race? Ron Paul is a coward and playing it slick to be relevent. He hasn’t got fight in his DNA. He always takes the easy way out… with his pacifist, isolationist ideology… to passing the buck on thinking outside the box on many issues which require more than a simplistic Libertarian explanation or excuse.

      If you would watch the video in my first post, you would realize what a grave situation you NEOCONS are in for. Do you really want four more years of Obama? I, and all Ron Paul supporters are adamant about our position here. We feel that voting for any establishment progressive, whether it be Romney, Gingrich or Santorum, will lead to the fall of the dollar and throw us into a state of Anarchy. You people just do not realize it yet as you do not know how to research properly. You people because of your ignorance are going to throw away 30% of the vote so you can go kill the muslims. So sad. You will rue the day that you thought this way. There is no way the Republicans can take the White House without Ron Paul supporters as we have grown farther than ever expected.

      You all need to realize that there is a reason that Paul supporters are so faithful. It has to do with character, honesty, and the Constitutional principles espoused by the only one who is at risk of being assassinated upon becoming POTUS. Us Paul supporters are so faithful that we would raise money for Paul to get private security so he would not have to rely on the Secret Service. There is something to be said about that and all of you need to look into this so you can see what is at stake.

      Republicorp, I have said this before but will again. You are a plant for Obama and have no say here. You know not what you say. Paul has been the only voice of reason for many years blocked by your kind in Congress. If his bills would have been accepted by the progressives, who want the destruction of the U.S., and half of them passed, we would not be at this point in history where we are about to lose everything.       I find this to be true everytime, all of you come on here and try to bash Paul and when I confront you with the truth, you are silent. Cowards all. The only way out of this mess is to elect a man that prophesied everything we are going through now because of U.S. policy. Paul forsaw everything we are going through now, back in 2002. He knows how to end the insanity of our run away government if given a chance. If we go with the medias choice, we are doomed, and our childrens children are doomed. Do you want to take the chance to enslave your grandchildren?? I do not.       I don’t look at polls, I took two statistics courses in college, I know what polls mean, nothing.
      Romney is a loser, with a long history of losing campaign’s. His winning record is 33.3%.
      He lost to McCain, Huckabee, and thompson. Against Obama he will lose by over 10%.

      Romney’s Election win ratio is 1:3. that’s 33.3%.
      Reagan had STRONG conservative record, Romney has strong LIBERAL record.
      Reagan was a great speaker, orator, leader. Romney is a horrible speaker, and Horrible leader(unless 47th in job creation is good enough).
      Anyone who compares Reagan to romney simply doesn’t know history and quite frankly are separated from reality.

      In 2002 why would Romney mislead people to consider that if one wants to have an abortion younger than 18 years of age, one must have the permission of one parent and if a parent doesn’t go along, one can go to a judge or justice to get that permission.

      Twice he spoke at events honoring Roosevelt. The first was in 1982. He had visited the FDR exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution, then returned to the White House for a luncheon that included the Roosevelt family. Naturally, when speaking in front of someone’s family, one avoids comments critical of a loved one. The speech was instead a tribute to FDR’s leadership. Reagan called him “one of history’s truly monumental figures,” “an American giant, a leader who shaped, inspired, and led our people through perilous times,” one who could “reach out to men and women of diverse races and backgrounds and inspire them with new hope and new confidence in war and peace.”
