The Blaze‘s Official Recap of This Year’s Atheist-Led ‘War on Christmas’

2011 War on Christmas RecapThis year, it was practically impossible to deny that some major factions of the atheist movement were waging a full-out assault on Christmas.

The typical “War on Christmas” allegations that arise around this time every year are usually met with a fair bit of skepticism, but considering the vehement attacks on nativities and Christian themes this holiday season, denial is virtually impossible.

We thought we’d recap the chaos that unfolded this year so that you can see a substantial portion of the chaos in a more comprensive form. So, here it is:

The atheist-led war got off to a rousing start in early November when Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker decided to change the name of the capitol’s “holiday” tree back to a “Christmas” tree. This, of course, ignited anger from the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), which called the tree’s name-change a “snub to non-Christians.”

In an interview with the Blaze, Annie Laurie Gaylor, the co-president of the FFRF called Walker “…a Teabagger governor wearing religion on his sleeves.” She went on to say that, in an ideal world, there would be no Christmas trees, Menorahs or other religious symbols on government property. In the case of the Christmas spruce versus holiday tree, she maintained that “the government should not be using the word Christmas.”

In Rhode Island, Gov. Lincoln Chafee took the opposite approach, as he decided to call the state’s spruce a “holiday” tree. Critics erupted, but the governor held his ground, citing inclusiveness as the motivating factor.

Then, of course, there was South Carolina’s Hollings Cancer Center and its ban on Santa Claus. Hospital volunteer Frank Cloyes, a retiree who volunteered to play St. Nick every year, was told he couldn’t do so this Christmas because of religious diversity. The uproar was so boisterous, that the hospital decided to let Cloyes come after all. Tis the season for changes of heart (and good PR), apparently.

At the Claudia Landeen School in Stockton, California, teachers were allegedly told that they wouldn’t be allowed to display Santas, Christmas trees — even Poinsettia plants this year. The ban, of course, was intended to prevent religious discrimination.

In Pitman, New Jersey, non-believers raised a ruckus over a “Keep Christ in Christmas” sign that was positioned on private property, yet hanging over a public street. And in Maryland, well-meaning carolers were booted out of a U.S. Post Office. Apparently, holiday cheer and parcel packages don’t mix.

While there were plenty of similar dramas across the country, it seemed that nativities were the favorite target of non-believers this year. In Warren, Michigan, for instance, atheists threatened legal action if officials didn’t comply with their demands to post an anti-Christmas sign inside of city hall.

The situation in Santa Monica, California, was a bit more sinister. Non-believers exploited technicalities to thwart the display of a nearly six-decade old nativity tradition. While the atheists succeeded in co-opting the space with anti-God displays, Christians are understandably less-than-pleased with the outcome.

2011 War on Christmas Recap

A mock nativity scene created from the Freedom From Religion Foundation (Image Credit: WXOW.com)

In Wisconsin, home to the FFRF, yet another nativity drama unfolded. This time, a private group placed the traditional birth scene in the capitol — an action atheists were clearly unhappy with. The FFRF then decided it would be appropriate to place a mock nativity — complete with an African baby, Einstein, Thomas Jefferson, the Statue of Liberty and other non-religious elements — next to the traditional one.

But the most epic nativity battle unfolded between atheists and unwavering Christmas lovers in Athens, Texas. After the FFRF made threats over a display was was present in front of the local courthouse, 5,000 people showed up to protest, sing hymns and support the Christian imagery. And no, they weren’t Occupy protesters.

Fox News host Eric Bolling was so turned-off by the way in which FFRF leader Dan Barker characterized the nativity and Jesus that he actually kicked Barker off of his show. Watch the segment, below:

Even North Korea got in on the anti-Christmas sentiment following festive lights that were displayed by neighboring South Korea. Oh, and we almost forgot the anti-Christmas billboards featuring Jesus, Santa and…Satan (here in America, of course).

While these scenarios don’t represent every, single instance of anti-Christmas sentiment (there were too many to capture), they give you an idea of just how intense the 2011 War on Christmas became. Next year, I‘m sure we’ll be back with countless more bizarre tales.

Merry Christmas!

Socialist invented Santa Clause in order to divert attention away from the Birth of Christ, for the reason the Easter Bunny came to light so not to think about the death of Christ. When Athiest desire Christ not to be true, then we must throw away any and all concepts of Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny. We all know that’s not goin to happen.

The “war on Christmas” is an invented controversy that serves only the purpose of increasing profits on FOX and other profit oriented media outlets. They cultivate your outrage to increase their viewership.

Maybe you missed seeing Charlie Brown’s Christmas. Or maybe you don’t understand that Christmas is about your personal relationship with Christ and the enduring lessons he gave to the world.

Instead, maybe your focus is about what a Christmas tree is called by this person or that (although the idea of a celebratory tree around the winter solstice predates Christ), or that a manger scene is removed from govermnent property because the United States Constitution prohibits “state supported religion.”

But none of those things have anything to do with your personal believe in Christ as your Lord and Savior does it? If you could force the govenor of your state to say “Christmas tree” instead of “Holiday tree,” tell me exactly how that would improve your relationship with Christ, and that of the other people in your state? I think the Christian religion spreads through many personal ways, but not by what what you call a tree, or whether or not a manger scene is on government property.

No one was complaining about Christmas until the Progressive Atheists started the charge. Now all of a sudden it seems that people are giving this false protest credit for being grounded in reality. No atheist ever suffered due to the celebration of Christmas. Useful idiots have only been led to believe that their rights have been trampled on. I could make the same case for people who were forced to take Physical Education class in high school, or risk not graduating.

This protest against Christmas is a sham.

On Christmas Day I think we should give homage to the spiritual leader of the Republican Party, Ayn Rand. Paul Ryan has all his interns read her books and displays her books in his office. Rush Limbaugh has called her, “the brilliant writer and novelist.” Clarence Thomas, the Supreme Court Justice says, “I tend really to be partial to Ayn Rand.” And of course she is lauded here as the “Mother” of capitalistic thought.

So it is appropriate on this day, Christmas, that we quote her. In a famous 1959 interview with Mike Wallace the following was said:

Mike Wallace: “You are out to destroy almost every edifice of the contemporary American way of life,
our Judeo-Christian religion, our modified government regulated capitalism, our rule by majority will.
Other reviews have said you scorn churches and the concept of God. Are these accurate criticisms?”

      Ayn Rand: “Yes”

Ayn Rand mocked Christianity and all religions. She ridiculed those who would help the poor, or otherwise sympathize with the less fortunate, like Christ, as being weak. She despised every principle that Jesus Christ taught.

Ayn Rand is the philosopher of the right. On this holiest of days, let us all, as Christians, give homage to her and her disciples.

JZS “Ayn Rand mocked Christianity and all religions. She ridiculed those who would help the poor, or otherwise sympathize with the less fortunate, like Christ, as being weak. She despised every principle that Jesus Christ taught.”
No she did not “mock” them, she found peace in the individualist thought. This paradigm would include the enlightened thought of disagreeing with your religious point of view, while defending your right to practice your religion without government intervention. Yes, it’s true that she was an “athiest”, but you cannot find an isntance when she said that you as a Christian should be silenced. Furthermore, she did not dispise Jesus, as she did not believe that he was an intrigal part of her life, while RESPECTING OTHERS WHO DID NOT SHARE HER VIEWS!

“Ayn Rand is the philosopher of the right. On this holiest of days, let us all, as Christians, give homage to her and her disciples.” You are not only twisting this ladies’ words to suit your agenda, you are obviously of the collectivist paradigm which promotes demonization, generalizations, hate, and all out lies.

Every single individualist will tell you that no matter how they may personally disagree with your INDIVIDUAL beliefs, he/she would absolutely defend YOUR right to live as you please, without your freedoms being surpressed by another INDIVIDUAL or a collective.

Mike Wallace: “You say you don’t like the kind of altruism by which we live. You like a certain kind of Ayn Randist selfishness.”
Rand: “ ‘Don’t like’ is too weak a word, I consider it evil.”

Rand: “It must be either reason or faith. I am against God for the reason that I don’t want to destroy reason.”

Phil Donahue: “You have to allow that you’re not smart enough to know there isn’t a God.” Rand: “Yes I am and everybody here is smart enough. It doesn’t take much intelligence.”

William Hickman, a notorious murderer who raped and dismembered a 12 year old girl, was lifted up as a model for admiration by Rand for his selfishness and ability to completely disregard the mores of society.

From the Journals of Ayn Rand : “[Hickman's trial presents an] amazing picture of a man with no regard whatever for all that society holds sacred, and with a consciousness all his own. A man who really stands alone, in action and in soul.”

JZ- Ayn Rand celebrated her inalienable right to not practice a religion, and to describe why she AS AN INDIVIDUAL does not. This DOES NOT mean that she was against another individual’s freedom to celebrate life how he/she pleased. A paradigm which allows anything other than that sence of personal peace, is evil as it allows a collectivist/socialist boil to fester into the totalitarianist virus that would shackle each individual’s freedom.

In response to poverty.sucks Saint Nicholas was a real person. He was a Bishop of the church who wanted to reach out to poor children in his area. He put coins from his own family fortune in their stockings that had been hung by the fireplace to dry overnight after washing. Throughout his life he preached the great gift for all who is Jesus the Christ is given to everyone who wants to receive Him. He preached charity and service to others in the name of Christ. The Latin translation Santa Nicolas has been abbreviated to Santa Claus. I thought everyone knew that there was a real Santa Claus.

“Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should “make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,” thus building a wall of separation between Church & State. [Congress thus inhibited from acts respecting religion, and the Executive authorised only to execute their acts, I have refrained from prescribing even those occasional performances of devotion, practiced indeed by the Executive of another nation as the legal head of its church, but subject here, as religious exercises only to the voluntary regulations and discipline of each respective sect.] Adhering to this expression of the supreme will of the nation in behalf of the rights of conscience, I shall see with sincere satisfaction the progress of those sentiments which tend to restore to man all his natural rights, convinced he has no natural right in opposition to his social duties.”

I wish more people knew that. It’s pretty simple that in the Bill of Rights it says that we have Freedom Of Religion not freedom from religion. It was put in their for the sole purpose that the government could make a national religion and force it on everyone else. It is in there to provide for all of us to be able to practice and express our own personal faiths and that no one would have the right or power to suppress our right to do so. But Atheists want to suppress our right to do so. If they ever succeed in doing so, we would finally then be in the communist and socialistic state that would be like China where they still persecute, jail, torture and execute persons of faith. Wanna know why they have so many organs for transplant and conveniently with just the right blood type to order with a very short waiting list compared to the whole rest of the world. And it isn’t just from their large population. I wonder what the Atheist think about all the people who have seen spirits? Are they all making it up? I wonder what the Atheist think about what real physicists say about the (at Least) nine dimensions that exist and what can happen between them. Atheists prefer stubborn ignorance and are afraid to face the reality of their souls existence and real science.

Nobody is trying to impose their beliefs on you. You have the perfect freedom to celebrate your religious holidays as you wish. I have the right to celebrate as I wish, whether it be religiously-oriented or not. However, my religion is NOT one that proselytizes so having a huge advertising display out in the public sphere saying to everyone, Hey, look at me. This is my religion. We need you to pay attention and see us because we’re not sure enough in our faith to just celebrate it without making everyone out there witness this and by the way you should believe as we do because if not something horrible will happen to you when you die, just saying . . .”
well we just don’t need that.
If ALL religions and sects and cults were given the freedom to erect displays on the town common, that would be great. If we could celebrate our diversity without hate coming out, wonderful. What do you think would happen if we tried though? Late December is host to many diverse holidays, not just Christmas. That you are ignorant of them is no excuse. As I said, no one is trying to prevent you from celebrating your personal holiday to the hilt in your home, your church or other religious center. But where you would object to being forced to see our displays, we are just saying that finally, in the 21st century, we do not feel we should be forced to see yours, thank you, and that we can all get along best that way, since you will not respect our beliefs but expect that from us.

What I don’t understand is why don’t the religious groups in America fight back. The atheist are less than 1% of the American people, yet they are the ones that are using our courts and our political system to fight the majority. If a large amount of Christians Groups pooled their money, hired lawyers to challenge these people the atheist would either crawl back under their rock, like the worms they are or we would bankrupt them. My biggest frustration with the right is that they are not organized and they don’t fight back. Christians must put a stop to these attacks on our religion. Christians must unite and not in a violet way but fight these people and beat them at their own game. If we Christians do not start standing up for one another then you will see us in years to come hiding in a cellar or in a cave praying to Christ to help us, as the wolves of government and atheist stand guard ready to pounce on our remains.

Fight back against what? Nobody is infringing on your right to practice as you wish. What we, atheists, agnostics, members of other religions, and mature, thinking, ethical Christians are pushing back against is this constant proselytization of your brand of your religion. You don’t even realize that there are other holidays at this time of year! You don’t even know where the basic props of your holiday originate and how they were borrowed from other faiths. You want recognition of your religion and its beliefs as some kind of an American norm but you don’t even practice this stuff you preach! Love, compassion, forgiveness . . . all supposed tenets, and you would claim “exclusive trademarks,” of the Abrahamic mythology, yet your 3 religions fight amongst yourselves like children! Not just fight too, you kill each other! Then you claim some kind of smug moral superiority over everyone else? Can you not see the problem here? Can your brain cells not recognize the rationality of the skepticism of these claims? If you had a leg to stand on and practiced what you preached you’d probably receive less objections but as it stands, the rest of us in the nation, in the world, are pretty fed up with the whole dog and pony show, and the pretty lights & the spirit of love and gift giving can be appreciated for just what they are between human beings and our non-human friends without dogma or creed.

WHY is it that if someone doesn’t accept Christmas, they somehow are NOW automatically Athiests? What happened to FREEDOM OF RELIGION in this nation? It leaves a bad taste in the mouth of Conservatives who speak about being RIGHT, all-the-while, NOT doing their homework about Biblical things to be sure THOSE things are understood rightly. Anyone ever listen to the Drew Carey audio clip that goes around each year during this time? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_Thq4Xhr7Q For further Food-for-Thought about Christmas, review the little 2 page note near the top of this page: http://www.cogbrethren.org/ And about Hell? Do a search on the word in any Bible program, and notice what each of the FOUR different meanings of the word actually teach when read within the Context of the chapters in which they are spoken about. Hell is NOT what you’ve been taught. Ever hear of Dante’s Inferno? <-this is where current ideas of Hell originated, because it is NOT what the scriptures teach. Don't cherry-pick the scriptures….read the WHOLE stories around each time the 'English" word Hell is used, to see what GOD's book really tells us =)

Point of Order here: A ‘war on Jesus’ is NOT, I repeat…is NOT a war on Christianity. The christian religion does NOT have a monopoly of the Lord our God whom we celebrate today with His birth as a man, to save ALL mankind.
Christianity is a man made religion to which neither Jesus nor His Apostles EVER called themselves nor directed anyone to call themselves. The apostles did acknowledge they were called christians (that‘s like lefties calling us ’teabaggers’), but they did NOT start a ‘christian church’.
That is all…oh…and Merry Christmas. :)

Huh. Rebel, that’s a strange claim.

Because in the Bible Jesus says: “15He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock *I will build my church*, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” in Matthew 16.

Christian means “Little Christ,“ and thus we are to establish a ”Christian Church”- to follow Jesus and walk with him. Jesus is the new covenant.

The twisted mind at work. You would think these people could find something usefull to do, but no, their small weak minds tell them that destroying Christmas is worth their time. How wrong they are. They are but a tiny minority,

If christianity is so weak as to be destroyed by atheists, than why bother with it. The truth is atheists do not want to dedstroy christianity, just keep it in its place, outside of government and as a private affair among indidviduals, as the Constitution sets forth. Christ, along with Budha, Mohammod, the Shiva, etc. do not belong in the town hall or any government building.

My guess is that the few accept a slipery slope when we give in just a little, thinking that we can make them happy and have “peace” if we just give in a little. But the reality is that the other side will just keeps taking. We’re ignorant to the fact that they will NOT ever be happy until they destroy God, and all that reflects Him. I’m glad to know who wins in the end, and I am NO longer afraid. I will stand even to my death for the one true almighty God.

It‘s like the Grinch thinking if he took everything away Christmas wouldn’t come-but it did anyway. Silly people think they can destroy Christmas, well good luck, it start‘s in our heart’s and they can’t ever take that away. All they did was call more attention to Christmas!

Here is a very funny essay from Salon for the holidays:

sad that people waste their lives trying to ruin Christmas, they cost us tons of money every year in court costs for their lawsuits. may they figure out soon that a nativity display does not fully represent our faith that our faith is in our hearts where their lawsuits and whining hold no weight.

Most of the fifty-five Founding Fathers who worked on the Constitution were members of orthodox Christian churches and many were even evangelical Christians. The first official act in the First Continental Congress was to open in Christian prayer, which ended in these words: “…the merits of Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Savior. Amen”.

George Washington certainly knew the intent of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, since he presided over their formation, said in his “Farewell Address”: “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars.”

This view, that we were a Christian nation, was held for almost 150 years until the Everson v. Board of Education ruling in 1947. Before that momentous ruling, even the Supreme Court knew that we were a Christian nation. In 1892 the Court stated:

“No purpose of action against religion can be imputed to any legislation, state or national, because this is a religious people…This is a Christian nation.” There it is again! From the Supreme Court of the United States. This court went on to cite 87 precedents (prior actions, words, and rulings) to conclude that this was a “Christian nation”.
