Vatican Confirms Popes Personal Butler Paolo Gabriele Arrested in Leaked Documents Scandal

VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican confirmed on Saturday that the pope’s butler has been arrested in its embarrassing leaks scandal, adding a Hollywood twist to a sordid tale of power struggles, intrigue and corruption in the highest levels of Catholic Church governance.

Paolo Gabriele, a layman and member of the papal household, was arrested Wednesday after secret documents were found in his Vatican City apartment and was continuing to be held Saturday, Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said in a statement.

Gabriele is often seen by Pope Benedict XVI’s side in public, riding in the front seat of his open-air jeep during Wednesday general audiences or shielding the pontiff from the rain. He has been the pope’s personal butler since 2006, one of the few members of the small papal household that also includes the pontiff’s private secretaries and four consecrated women who care for the papal apartment.

His arrest followed another stunning development at the Vatican this week, the ouster of the president of the Vatican bank, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, by his board. Sources close to the investigation said he, too, was found to have leaked documents, though the official reason for his ouster was that he simply failed to do his job.

The “Vatileaks” scandal has seriously embarrassed the Vatican at a time during which it is trying to show the world financial community that it has turned a page and shed its reputation as a scandal plagued tax haven.

Vatican documents leaked to the press in recent months have undermined that effort, alleging corruption in Vatican finance as well as internal bickering over the Holy See’s efforts to show more transparency in its financial operations. But perhaps most critically, the leaks have seemed aimed at one main goal: to discredit Pope Benedict XVI’s No. 2, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican secretary of state.

The scandal took on even greater weight last week with the publication of “His Holiness,” a book which reproduced confidential letters and memos to and from Benedict and his personal secretary. The Vatican called the book “criminal” and vowed to take legal action against the author, publisher, and whoever leaked the documents.

The Vatican had already warned of legal action against the author, Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi, after he broadcast letters in January from the former No. 2 Vatican administrator to the pope in which he begged not to be transferred for having exposed alleged corruption that cost the Holy See millions of euros in higher contract prices. The prelate, Monsignor Carlo Maria Vigano, is now the Vatican’s U.S. ambassador.

Nuzzi, author of “Vatican SpA,” a 2009 volume laying out shady dealings of the Vatican bank based on leaked documents, said he was approached by sources inside the Vatican with the trove of new documents, most of them of fairly recent vintage and many of them painting Bertone in a negative light.

Bertone, 77, had no diplomatic experience when, after Benedict’s election, he took over the high-profile job as the main administrator of the Vatican and its external relations. He had long been Benedict‘s loyal deputy as a canon lawyer at the Vatican’s orthodoxy office.

But he has been blamed for a series of gaffes that have plagued Benedict’s papacy and, according to the leaked documents, generated a not inconsiderable amount of ill will directed at him from other Vatican officials.

“For some time and in various parts of the church, criticism even by the faithful has been growing about the lack of coordination and confusion that reign at its center,” Cardinal Paolo Sardi, the former No. 2 official in the Vatican secretariat of state, wrote to the pope in 2009, according to the letter reproduced in “His Holiness.”

At a news conference this week, Nuzzi defended the publication of the book and said he wasn’t afraid of Vatican retaliation. In fact, he even taunted Vatican prosecutors to seek help from Italian magistrates to investigate the case, charging that it would be a remarkable turnaround, given that the Vatican has been less than helpful in the past when Italian prosecutors came asking for information for their investigations.

He praised his sources – and said there were several – in his acknowledgments, writing: “They risked their jobs, loves, lives to entrust their big and little secrets.”

Nuzzi had no comment Saturday about the arrest.

Lombardi said Saturday the arrest of Gabriele was a sad development for all Vatican staff. “Everyone knows him in the Vatican, and there’s certainly surprise and pain, and great affection for his beloved family,” Lombardi said.

Lombardi said Gabriele had met with his two lawyers and that the Vatican judicial system was taking its investigative course. He hasn’t been indicted.

The Vatican has taken the leaks very seriously, with Benedict appointing a commission of cardinals to investigate. Vatican gendarmes as well as prosecutors are also investigating the sources of the leaks.

Amazing all of you Catholic suckers who follow this pedophile leader without question….and the remaining Christians that think they have some in with an invisible man in the sky…Religious people are only one thing…Suckers.

Everything that we associate with religion is imaginary. God, the Bible, Jesus, the resurrection, prayer, the Ten Commandments, the creation story, your soul, everlasting life, heaven… every bit of it is the product of human imagination. The same goes for Allah, the Koran and so on. As a species we have believed all of this religious dogma for centuries, and most of us believe it today to some degree. And yet… it is all fiction. It is just as fictional as were the gods of the Egyptians, the Romans and the Aztecs.

There are two important reasons why humans fabricate all of our religions:
People invent God as a way to cope with death. Many humans are terrified by death for some reason. They invent religion as a way to deal with their terror.

People invent God as a proxy for goodness. People want a way to promote “goodness” and eliminate “evil” in their societies. In the past, inventing an imaginary God has been perceived to be one way to facilitate that process.
If we can separate death and goodness from the mythology of God so that we can understand them and work with them in a positive way, we can actually do something very helpful. We can create a rational world for ourselves that is focused on benefiting mankind.

First there was Christ….Then there were Christians….Then ROME-an Catholics(only one flavor). These were started by the Rullers-in-Rome…they first tried burnning them out…then Lion-food. Finally they found a better CONTROL…make them into the king’s religion! The King-of-England didn’t like the romancatholosism, so he broke-of a piece into his own National-religion. Finally, a few of our ansesstors “had-enough“ and with the promis of ”the new world” lands, we had enough “distance” to help defeat them from ruening our lives, too(1775–Paul Revere’s ride). The rest of the “world” couldn’t wait to finally destroy us. Running a proffitable country without killing millions and without being “slaves to some KING” was just NOT DONE!! WE would ruin all their forever-false claims that “You can not do anything without ME-the-King system.”… “you can not talk to GOD without Me-the-King system.”

You can’t prove or disprove there is no GOD so therefore you are acting on “faith” in believing there is no GOD. Therefore you are practicing a religion.

It saddens me, but I’ve come to the conclusion, from prior postings related to other stories involving the Roman Catholic Church, that no matter how eloquent things will be said in defense of the Church, it will be of no consequence to those who have no inclination to listen with an open heart. The only thing we can do is fast and pray for All Christian Churches to be able to praise and honor the Lord God as they see fit without denigrating other faith expressions. The time is coming when we’ll be unable to freely worship. The Church is Jesus Christ’s. It is His to defend (can’t contemplate better person to do so) when He comes, which will be in our generation. All I can do is fast and pray for all, sinners and righteous alike, to hear the call of the Lord, confess, and convert before it is to late. Gather your oil lamps and flasks of oil, for the Bridegroom is approaching!

Some of you are quite amazing in your narrow-mindedness and unwillingness to find out truths for yourself instead of listening to propoganda put out against the Catholic Church. My dad was a big, strong man, afraid of almost nothing…except the Catholic Church. He had been so indoctrinated with horror stories that he actually would not walk on the same side of the street of any Catholic Church out of real fear. He thought all kinds of bazaar things – it makes me laugh, but he was dead serious. He came to realize, of course, through his wife and 5 kids living their faith, how he had been so deceived by people who hated Catholics.

So maybe what you think you know is simply what you have been directed to know by an agenda-driven force that has no problem misleading you. This is not an easy job these days with so much misinformation out there. Sorting truth from lies is a full time job anymore. But don‘t you owe it to yourself to know what’s real and what’s not?

Many non-Catholic Christians use the passage you refer to, Exodus 20:4-5, to “prove” to Catholics that making “any graven images or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath” is detestable to God. But when this passage is read in context, it is not the making of images that is condemned but the worship of them.
In fact, five chapters later God commands the Israelites to make two golden statues of angels as part of the lid of the Ark of the Covenant (Ex 25:17-19). That’s an image of something from heaven. Then, in 1 Kings 6, God commands that graven images of flowers and palm trees be made, as well as 15-foot tall statues of cherubim. And in Numbers 21, God commands that a bronze serpent be made and uses it to heal the Israelites. It was preserved for 800 years and then destroyed when some began to worship it (2 Kgs 18:4).
Catholics do not worship statues, because only God is deserving of adoration. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is adamant in affirming this (CCC 2112–2114). When a Catholic bows to a statue, he is not worshiping it any more than King Solomon worshiped Bathsheba when he bowed to her in 1 Kings 2:19. In other words, the honor given to images does not detract from the honor that is due to God. After all, if one member of the body is honored, the others should share in its joy (1 Cor 12:26).

If someone enters your house, he should expect to find a picture of your mother. So, when someone walks into a Catholic Church—the household of God—he should not be surprised to find a picture of the mother of God, along with the rest of the heavenly family!
In giving the Israelites a beautiful temple strewn with images (1 Kgs 6), God acknowledged the reason why he gave us our senses: to use them to worship him in spirit and truth.
Lets see if how you handle this explanation, before I take the time to answer your other comments

Jesus said, “And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven” (Matt. 23:9). Several sentences later he said, “Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers” (Matt. 23:32). So clearly verse 9 was not meant to be a prohibition against the use of the word “father” for anyone other than the first person of the trinity.
Paul also referred to other of his converts: “To Titus, my true child in a common faith: grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior” (Titus 1:4); “I appeal to you for my child, Onesimus, whose father I have become in my imprisonment” (Philem. 10). None of these men were Paul’s literal, biological sons. Rather, Paul is emphasizing his spiritual fatherhood with them.
Peter followed the same custom, referring to Mark as his son: “She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you greetings; and so does my son Mark” (1 Pet. 5:13). The apostles sometimes referred to entire churches under their care as their children.
Jesus is not against Spiritual Fatherhood. It is he who gave these men their role as spiritual fathers, and it is his Holy Spirit who recorded this role for us in the pages of Scripture. To acknowledge spiritual fatherhood is to acknowledge the truth, and no amount of anti-Catholic grumbling will change that fact.

This is outsiders who compete with that church setting up a way to attack yet another religion, so they can replace it with a new thought control mechanism of their own.

Your comment is blasphemous and completely uncalled for. If you knew how loving that man is, you would be asking, no begging God for mercy for your comment. You do not care about truth. You cannot tell what is evil and what is good. You hide behind a moniker so you can slander anonymously with having to face any discomfort for your actions. It is in entirely obligatory that you make a public apology for your slander.

This is a complex issue, where the Founding Fathers adopted that the State shall not be involved in Religion! ISLAM is a Theocrary of Caliphate State & Muslim Religion; ZIONISM is a Theocracy of Israeli State & Judaism; and the Eastern Roman Empire & Holy Roman Empires were Theocracies of State & Christianity. The British Empire was a Theocrarcy of English King as State & head of the Church.

The American Genius was in… Prohibiting any Theocracy… and rejecting the previous forms!

There were several attempts made on his life.he came to my city and spoke at a Baptist Church and shortly after was poisoned..he died.. If you read this article..it tells how the Vatican created Islam and that they had raised such a mighty in Islam and Islam wanted Europe..the Pope said no and raised his own army to fight them back..This little war was the 2 thousand year Crusades in which millions of Protestant Christians were murdered and millions of Bibles burned to keep the truth from the Roman Catholics and the Muslims..towards the end..when Islam had taken Portugal and wanted Spain but was running out of manpower..they negotiated with St Francis of Sisissi to let each others mosques and churches reside in each others countries without fear of being attacked..as it is today..Obama atteneded St. Francis of Sisissi Catholic School in Indonesia as well as the strict Madrassa of his choosing according to his biographies.

@LUKE As you know Luke..Papal Rome has had a succession of Popes..The Catholic Church herself believes that Peter was the first Pope..The religion of Islam itself is believed to have been founded around 622 AD Now no one really knows the time frames of all of this coming into being..but it is all very logical. Arguing over the the year the Vatican was created is like arguing over Jesse Ventura being a Underwater Demolitions Expert or a Navy Seal being they have converged to all being Seals..But one cannot deny that the Papal Rome slaughtered millions of Christians and burned millions of Bibles to keep the truth from the Muslims and the Roman Catholics..In Rivera’s stated goals of the Vatican in the first place..was the takeover of Jerusalem..and as for them being at odds with Islam..of course they were..this is all in the link..how the vatican created islam.. Heres a link to the blood on her hands. http://rekindlingthereformation.com/RTR-Articles-Papal-Rome-Timeline.html

He cares more than you are able to understand for those who are suffering and those would include anyone with same sex attractions. He receives millions of prayers everyday including mine. While on earth, good and evil will always coexist and their are some that are trying to undermine his work. Catholic teaching happens to be completely true. @WHATDAYAKNOWJO Yeah..I am so sure that the Pope is the Vicar of Christ here on earth..I think that might be blasphemy..The church was not built upon the foundation of Peter.but upon the foundation of Jesus Christ Himself..Christ did not come to earth to glorify Peter. In Revelations..it says that the antichrist will sit in the temple calling Himself God..and many will be fooled..many believe that the Pope will be the anti-Christ..but many believe that He is the false prophet..the Christians did not get their Bible from the Catholics.
Roman Catholics often say that it was their church that gave us the Bible. They sometimes claim this when defending their “Sacred Tradition” so that they might support extra-biblical teachings such as purgatory, penance, indulgences, and Mary worship. They often say the only way the Christian church knew what books are to be included in the Canon of Scripture was because it was revealed by word-of-mouth in the early church; that is, by the tradition of the Catholic Church.
Unfortunately, this argument implies that tradition is superior to Scripture. Of course, we are not saying that the Roman Catholic church teaches that tradition is above Scripture. But when Sacred Tradition is claimed to be the thing by which Scripture is given, then tradition is inadvertently the thing that gives blessing and approval to the Bible. Heb. 7:7 says, “But without any dispute the lesser is blessed by the greater.” The unfortunate psychological effect

of saying that Roman Catholic tradition is what gave us the Bible, is that it elevates their tradition to a level far greater than what is permitted in Scripture. In fact, it is contradicted by scripture:

“Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively applied to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that in us you might learn not to exceed what is written, in order that no one of you might become arrogant in behalf of one against the other,” (1 Cor. 4:6).
The Bible tells us to obey the Word of God, to not go beyond the written Word, so that we might not make mistakes in what is true. Unfortunately, the problem with an elevated status of Roman Catholic church tradition is that it results in various justifications of it’s non-biblical teachings such as prayer to Mary, purgatory, indulgences, penance, works of righteousness, etc. Because it has deviated from trusting God’s Word alone, it has ventured into unscriptural areas. Nevertheless, did the Roman Catholic Church give us the Bible? No, it did not.

First of all, the Roman Catholic Church was not really in effect as an organization in the first couple hundred years of the Christian Church. The Christian church was under persecution and official church gatherings were risky business in the Roman Empire. Catholicism as an organization with a central figure located in Rome did not occur for quite some time, in spite of its claim they can trace the papacy back to Peter.

      Second, the Christian Church recognized

Father Malichi Martin told of the corruption in the Church. My question is, Why is there so much secrecy in any church? Why are so many things kept from the Faithful? I believe Faith itself is the correct religion. Each church tells it’s followers that theirs is the only correct one, yet if God is the Creator, why would He produce natives in the remote jungles of the world knowing that they have no chance at Heaven? It just doesn’t add up. You can’t have it both ways. People may be different, but souls are the same. Your beliefs are all that you have. Spend them wisely.

Unfortunately, the history of Europe is the history of the Roman Catholic Church’s quest for temporal power, and since it as any other church is comprised of human beings, they too are subject to all the sins that are “common to Man”. Leaders all the more so. The Lord said, “he who would be chief among you must be servant of all”. It also warned to beware of those who would become ‘lords over God’s heritage.” Rome long ago left off being servant of all and chose the latter path.
I hope that all the RC‘s won’t think I’m picking on them only, because all churches suffer from the same problems. The very heirarchical structure of denominations is in my opinion anti-believer. It should be “fellowlaborers” and “workers together with Christ” and not the pyramid scheme that has been forced on Christianity.

If you going to make a blanket comment about the history of Europe and the RCC, then I would also read the letters of the early church fathers as to what they believed(early 2nd century). Jesus, himself founded the church and The Catholics have done major spiritual good throughout the centuries for the salvation and welfare of mankind. The Bible comes from the Catholics, The Priesthood of The Jews prefigures the apostolic priesthood of the RCC. Why do people on earth expect that every Catholic is going to present themselves as a saint like example? Should a church have no sinners. If you were able to talk to the late Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, or Mother Theresa of Calcutta, they would straighten out your heretical thinking in a jiff.

      @Whatdoyouknow
I wasn’t aware in my post that I said that no good ever came from the RCC, and I certainly would never fault the works of someone like Mother Theresa but I do take exception to a few things you have said, namely, 1) that the RCC gave us the Bible. By my educational background the canon of Scripture was essentially established by the time Constantine ‘converted’, well before the emergence of what is now known as the RCC. There is good evidence to show that the Letters of Paul were set in the order (canon) they are always found by Paul himself. The Catholic Bible does contain books that are not recognised by your Protestant brothers and sisters but who is a heretic and who is not is defined by the one making the charge. Secondly, as concerning the priesthood, which you call apostolic, no where do any of the apostles establish a “priesthood” that even remotely resembles the heirarchy currently in use by the RCC. The NT does make references to the “doctrine of the Nicolaitans” found in Rev 2:6 and Rev 2:15 and concerns the re-establishing of a priesthood when no such intermediary is required. Incidentally the Lord says emphatically that the deeds and doctrines of the Nicolaitans he “hates”. I reject the need for a priest to confess to or otherwise monitor my Christian walk. This is the “lords over God’s heritage” that I referenced previously. I am accountable to all believers as they are to me. If that makes me heretic, then I wear the name proudly.

Sorry chum but I’m not buying what you say. Furthermore your tirades against those of Faith will not end its spread. More capable and more powerful people have tried throughout the ages but all have failed.
