‘The Fear I Have Never Lost’: Meet the Brave U.S. Army Medics in Afghanistan

FORWARD OPERATING BASE EDINBURGH, Afghanistan (AP) — U.S. Army medic Sgt. Jaime Adame hauled open the door and lunged from the helicopter into a cloud of dirt and confusion.
He could hear bursts of incoming fire above the thumping rotor blades. Somewhere in the billowing red smoke that marked the landing zone and the choking dust whipped up by the medevac chopper was a cluster of Marines pinned down by heavy fire, and one of them was bleeding badly.
The problem for Adame was that he did not know where.

US Army flight medic SGT Jaime Adame rushes into the dust out of a medevac helicopter from the US Army's Task Force Lift "Dust Off."
Adame had dropped into “hot L-Zs” before but this one was especially thick with commotion. Every second of indecision mattered, so he just ran, knowing any direction was dangerous. Only then did the cloud clear enough to bring into view the blurred outline of several Marines’ boots peeking out of the vehicle they were taking cover under.
“The fear I have never lost,” said Adame, who’s from Los Angeles. “It’s absolutely risky … and it will definitely get a lot more dangerous.”
With the spring fighting season under way in Helmand province in Afghanistan’s volatile south, the medics, crew chiefs and pilots with the U.S. Army’s “Dustoff” medevac unit expect a rising number of casualties. Coalition troops are seeing stepped-up attacks, the use of complex weapons systems like multiple-grenade launchers and the continuing plague of improvised explosive devices on the battlefield.
By the war’s blunt calculation, the worsening hostilities on the ground mean more medevac flights to ferry the wounded. For an emboldened insurgency, that equals opportunity. Increasingly they are targeting the medevac choppers as they swoop in for a rescue.
“It is kinda the wild, wild West,” said pilot Lt. Terry Hill of Kellyville, Oklahoma, the senior officer at Forward Operating Base Edi. “In the back of your mind as a pilot you know that you will most likely be shot at or hit.”
The Black Hawk helicopters Hill and other medevac pilots fly are unarmed, though they are always accompanied by at least one other aircraft that is. The “Dustoff” helicopters are distinguished with the emblem of the Red Cross and under international law are supposed to be off-limits to enemy fire.
Afghanistan’s insurgents make no distinction.
On one recent medevac run, as the helicopter navigated a firefight to set down in a small courtyard, a rocket-propelled grenade fired from a compound exploded in the air just behind the helicopter. The pilot quickly aborted the approach. Ground units called in air support, and attack helicopters riddled insurgent positions with heavy caliber machine gun fire.
Within minutes, the medevac chopper made a second attempt at landing to rescue a critically wounded Marine who had sustained a gunshot wound near his spine.
On another mission, insurgents fired several rounds from an assault rifle into the belly of the helicopter and its rotor blades.
“They seem to want us to get killed, which is surprising because we rescue everybody, including them.,” said Chief Warrant Officer Michael Otto of Irvine, California.
The medevac doesn‘t discriminate between the war’s wounded. Beyond coalition and Afghan soldiers, helicopters and medics also pick up injured Afghans, especially children. They often act as an ambulance service ferrying ill and injured Afghans from remote villages to coalition medical facilities. Enemy fighters are evacuated from the battlefield and treated as well.
With the sound of explosions shaking the air, Adame raced to find the wounded Marine. His comrades carried him on a stretcher from the dusty chaos to the chopper and Adame and his crew chief swiftly set to work.

U.S. Army flight medic SGT Jaime Adame, top, cares for seriously wounded Marine CPL. Andrew Smith following an insurgent attack on board a medevac helicopter.
Cpl. Andrew Smith was suffering a life-threatening arterial bleed from a shrapnel wound. His boots were sliced from his feet with a seat belt cutter. He was losing blood at an alarming rate. The medics focused only on stabilizing the young corporal; there was no time to think about the danger they had just faced.
“If one of those grenades hit us as we‘re taking off or coming in to land that’s close to 17,000 pounds of steel, and hydraulic fluid, and flammables,” Adame said. “Falling out of the sky in one of those things isn’t going to be pretty no matter how you look at it.”
Smith remarkably survived and is recovering at a military hospital in Maryland.
It’s those successes that give the “Dustoff” crews motivation to plunge back onto the battlefield.
“It’s all about saving a human life,” said Chief Warrant Officer Joe Rogers of Russellville, Kentucky, the pilot of the helicopter that was hit by assault rifle fire. “And it’s definitely worth the risk.”

We are talking about Al Quiada and the Taliban, exporters of international terrorism who have made this god-forsaken country their headquarters. And maybe there would not be so many collateral casualties if they did not bravely hide behind civilians while taking potshots at our soldiers.

Posted on May 30, 2011 at 5:27pm@ReddenBlack, yet another ‘brave’ liberal who won’t put the “reply” button on his posts:
Volunteers are what made our country great, and those who would voluntarily put themselvesin danger to save their fellow soldiers are living up to the highest traditions of heroism, something a useless little puke like you would know nothing about. God bless our troops, and especially those ministering angels called medics, who risk so much every day to help others. Medic units usually have some of the highest casualties in a war zone, because they repeatedly run or fly into danger to save the lives of many who would otherwise die without their help.
For some useless little liberal punk sitting at home safe behind his computer to inpugn the honor of these people is beneath contempt. Words fail me to describe what a disgusting little maggot you are–and I don’t CARE what color you are–obviously your spine is made of jelly and colored yellow. What a complete waste of air and space you are!

Posted on May 30, 2011 at 3:41pmThe fact that our service members are in harm’s way is not their fault, but is the consequence of the decisions of the civilian leadership of this country, and the aggresive acts of barbarians. We’re not taking their land. We don’t want it. Their own leadership, corrupt as it may be, doesn’t want us to leave. Tehy probably want to keep their heads on their necks. For all the national and international intrigue the combat soldier is out there laying it on the line for us, and they’re following the orders of the officers appointed over them. GO GET UM BOYS! ….Joe/Reddenblack, the reason you’re not in the armed forces is because we have an all volunteer force. We have that force because so many Americans turned tail on their country and on their obligations to defend her. So you don’t have to serve, but at least appreciate the bravery and sacrifice of those who still believe in America, and shut your pie hole about not giving a rats butt for the guys on the line.

Posted on May 31, 2011 at 6:01amHello Irish,
My oldest and youngest are US Army Medics. Both from the last 5 1/2 yrs. If you wish to please contact me and I will send over their F/B’s to you, lots of other medics with the Benj.. Benj is a badass, Mr 300 day one till now, hands on and in your face towards all, he will crack you up. Heather is the intuitive one, first in class at Ft Sam no matter what, she can make you head spin with what she knows. Like I told them from afar: Eyes wide open and head down please. Take care of your feet soldier, lots of powder and hydrate! God Bless you and be with you in all your steps you take there. Looking forward to you posting here again somewhere. I do believe you will find true support and encouragement from all of the rather patriotic people and military/military family members sincerely posting in this forum. They come from a love of God and Country, deeply imbedded in their souls and you will be most welcome here with GB and all as you continue on in your journey to the lands of old.
May I say to all of the Medic parents who may/may not post here: Courage to you all. Benj is okay now and so is Heather. Our kids are told to be Super Soldiers x10, no exceptions. Which I believe is just what they should hear to do the very BEST job each one can do. Amazing stuff comes from this application to themselves.
God Bless our Soldiers and families, now and from times gone by.
RIP to those who have fallen in our country’s name. Gone but not forgotten.

Unfortunately this war will never be won. Russia couldn‘t do it and we can’t either. These radicals are willing to die for their god and will go to any extreme to do so. They will walk right up to someone and blow themselves ( and others) apart! How can you beat an enemy who is so headstrong in their religious beliefs?
You can’t!
If the bleeding heart liberals would allow us (yes, they are the ones who have been running the show) to go in there and do what we have to do without reservation….this war would be over and many American lives would be saved!
God bless you on your journey and may the wind always be at your back!

Posted on May 30, 2011 at 2:08pmI agree with you Joe. As a service member that went to Afghanistan twice, we need to bring everyone home. How many soldiers need to die for this war? We’ve almost double of what we lost on 9/11. We’re wasting money at an alarming rate. The “terrorist” would have to repeat 9/11 twice already to accomplish the amount of American soldiers that have died. I’m sick of it. Not to mention the countless Afghan casualties. It seems that most that support the war forget how outrageously high the collateral damage is. If it were reversed, we wouldn’t be just sitting around saying “oh well it’s collateral damage” we’d be outraged.

And, I‘m surprised you didn’t mention old Billy-boy, who lobbed cruise missiles in from the Indian Ocean (flight time maybe, what, 90 minutes), to avenge the attack on the Cole and a couple of American embassies, highrise housing in Saudi Arabia and other mischief, like the mess in Mogadishu? Gee, leaving Somalia was a brilliant and courageous move! A cell phone call and bin Laden had an hour and a half to pack and go!) None of us ‘wants’ to be there! But the reality is that there is a lot of malice aimed at OUR back yard, from that place and it is better, believe me, to take the fight to the enemy (ask all those New Yorkers who made it, how much fun we had on 9-11). You have NO IDEA how nasty the World can be! Get out, travel a bit, hike the Hindu Kush, give away Bibles from your world cruising sailing yacht, and see what it is really like! You should be on your knees, thanking your maker, that we have the courage, the resources and the resolve to secure your freedom and pursuit of happiness!!!!

There is more honor in the finger of a 68W soldier than you have in your entire lifeless soul. This is not about free speech, but respect…of which you have none. The military men and women whom volunteered at a time of war is THE most honorable and non-selfish task that any American can perform. This is not about race either, although you far-left loonies will always reduce an argument to those depths, because it’s really all you have. Do you not believe that that are no minorities serving as medics? I believe this story itself, proves you wrong, unless you think Jaime is white Anglo-Saxon. If you CHOOSE, of your own free will, to go to a dangerous place, and do dangerous things. YOU DO NOT DESERVE SYMPATHY!!!!!
US Soldiers (for the most part) are not heroes, stop treating them as such.
They signed up to go out and get shot at. They got what they wanted. I am not sorry.

You, sir, are an idiot.
These men sign up because they want to serve their country, to do their part in what they feel is their duty to keep you, me, our children free. They do it to protect your right to disrespect them. They do it so that you can be made to understand that they care about our wounded and any wounded soldier. They don’t give a damn whether you like it or not, whether you understand it or not. They do it so that you can be free to show your absolute ignorance without being arrested. They do it to save lives. They do it because they are needed over there.
We need them a whole lot more over there than we need you over here. Do you understand THAT?
May God bless and protect our troops!

Posted on May 30, 2011 at 8:10pmReddenblack-I most certainly DID address your point, (which, btw, is a fallacious argument). The simple fact that you avoided defending yourself when I skewered you speaks volumes. In your world, soldiers are just like DMV workers=fallacy. In your world, there is no honor, no respect and we wouldn’t have an armed force capable of defending ourselves. What a warped, twisted, progressive world you live in. To serve our country…enlist at a time of war, is THE epitome of sacrifice…something you have NO concept of and zero ability to comprehend. FWIW…I missed the Vietnam campaign, got accepted to a top notch university and became a doctor…so excuse me for not enlisting in a time of peace. My son enlisted in a time of war…which is a wholly honorable act of respect for our country. He is definitely a hero…as are those that have done the same. So what’s your excuse?

Posted on May 31, 2011 at 8:44amI salute all who serve to preserve the fighting strength. And I agree with the expressed thought “it seems they want to kill us….” For it expresses what is manifest in the Islamic doctrine of Jihad. Theirs is a bloody false religion based upon the utter destruction of God’s Creation. What better way to inflict more death and terror that to target those whose goal is to defeat the enemy–death (and his friend dismemberment) by the gift of life -a goal so opposite that of the Islamic warrior.

Yes, in a major way. He/she better never say that in my presence or they will need their own medic. My son is a combat medic in the Army.
I don’t think any of the three wars we are is worth it. These medieval bastards don’t deserve to have one drop of American spilled for them. Bomb ‘em, nuke ‘em I don’t care. But stop having young American lives ended for these pigs.
