‘The Gnat’: Bristol Palin‘s New Book Details How She Got Pregnant After Drinking ’Too Many Wine Coolers’

NEW YORK (AP) — Bristol Palin writes in her new book of losing her virginity to boyfriend Levi Johnston on a camping trip after getting drunk for the first time on too many wine coolers.

She awoke in her tent, alone, with no memories of what had happened as Johnston “talked with his friends on the other side of the canvas.” She had vowed to wait until marriage. And she had lied to her parents about where she was going.

Palin, a 20-year-old single mother and the daughter of former Alaska Republican Gov. Sarah Palin, tells a story of “deception and disappointment” in the book, “Not Afraid of Life: My Journey So Far.”

The memoir, co-written with Nancy French, is scheduled for publication by William Morrow next week. The Associated Press purchased a copy Friday.

Palin’s book covers growing up with her family, which she portrays affectionately, and the excitement of her mother’s political life as governor and then, in 2008, as the GOP vice presidential candidate. But the main theme is her on-and-off-again relationship with Johnston, with whom she had a child and was briefly engaged while caught in a media spotlight.

She calls him “the gnat named Levi Johnston,” a self-involved slacker “who cheated on me about as frequently as he sharpened his hockey skates.”

But Palin, self-described as a good girl and straight-A student, had been drawn to him and his bad-boy manner from the time they met in seventh grade.

When she confronted him about their sexual encounter, he said what she wanted to hear: They wouldn’t do it again until they were married.

It didn’t work out that way, though Palin notes that when she got pregnant she was on birth control pills prescribed to treat her cramps. Only by the eighth home pregnancy test, she writes, was she convinced of the positive results.

When she told her parents, they were accepting, not condemning, she writes, and focused on the future, particularly her continuing education.

Johnston‘s reaction wasn’t so reassuring: “Better be a (bleeping) boy,” he declared.

Palin writes of being awakened early one morning in August 2008 by her father, Todd Palin. He gathered the kids, collected their cellphones and announced they were going on a surprise trip.

The destination was Dayton, Ohio, where, the next day, Arizona’s U.S. Sen. John McCain, the GOP presidential nominee, introduced his vice presidential pick and her family to the world.

By then, Sarah and Todd Palin knew their daughter was expecting. The public found out during the GOP convention, when Sarah Palin was shocked to see a TV network carrying an unapproved message from her commenting on it.

The entire family, along with Johnston, appeared at the convention.

Bristol Palin writes that, in her mind, being there on display with Johnston “somehow legitimized us as a couple.”

But soon after Tripp’s birth in December 2008, Palin writes that she found a text on Johnston’s cellphone that revealed he had been cheating on her again. He confessed and left the family’s house.

They reconciled one more time 18 months later. Johnston presented her with a ring, and they decided to sell the story of their engagement to Us Weekly magazine. But by the time the story appeared, they had split for good. Johnston had informed her he had gotten another woman pregnant.

“I’d just made a complete fool of myself and given my family the middle finger,” Palin writes of hearing the news.

Johnston cashed in on his newfound fame in ways Palin found appalling. Her reaction to learning that her son’s father had posed nude for Playgirl: “Puke!”

But Palin’s unsought celebrity brought her opportunities, too. Last fall, she competed on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars,” where, she writes, as each week passed and she survived her rivals “got a little colder.”

In her book, Palin describes herself as “just a normal girl who couldn’t hide her problems and learned a few lessons along the way.”

She has since emerged as a spokeswoman working to prevent teen pregnancy, earning thousands of dollars, which she doesn’t discuss in the book. In addition, the Bio Channel has announced a reality series in which she will star.

Meanwhile, Johnston has promised to set the record straight in his own book, “Deer in the Headlights: My Life in Sarah Palin’s Crosshairs.” It’s scheduled for publication this fall.

As for Bristol, she’s due some Christian charity. Republicans and conservatives only, however. Anthony Weiner will, no doubt, burn in hell.

So, I am the same person as the person I am telling not to make idiotic statements to? That is farfetched even for this site where everyone with a keyboard gets to call anyone they disagree with un-American and Communist like a bunch of DIY McCarthy’s. Sorry I didn’t get back to you soon enough, that was my fault, I shouldn’t have gone to the chow hall for breakfast, I’ll be better next time and answer at your beck and call. I changed my name because I thought having Atheist and Liberal in my name was a little much and might distract some from having a reasonable conversation, which I have been able to accomplish every once in a while. Though the chances remain slim.

Bob, you caught me as a fraud? There are Liberals in the Marine Corps, deal with it. You can call it infiltrating, but I call it liberals still wanting to serve our country. So there, Devil Pup, I am not going to give you my name because with the way you act you don’t deserve the time of day from me. You can go F Yourself where I really want to pick my size 12 boot, which are on my body the same time as my cammies, which last time I checked still said U.S. Marine.

Liberals in the Marines? What? Are you smoking crack? I find that exceptionally highly unlikely. If you expect us to believe your incredibly stupid claim, you might try “Catholic priest squad leaders in Al Quaeda.” Or maybe easter bunnies or tooth fairies. That’s like being a vegetarian who loves to eat meat.

I wasn’t even in the Marines, but the Navy. Can’t recall any liberals there either. Not a one. The Marines may have a reputation for being tough, but even us USN types wouldn’t tolerate liberalism. If I were a liberal on a Navy ship, I’d be afraid. In the Marines, probably more so.

You won’t score any points here with outrageous lies like that!

We all know that children are huge responsibilities, in addition they cost lots of money and require lots of time. That being said, I commend Bristol for taking the tougher road and respecting the life that grew inside her. Abortion is a serious procedure that shouldn’t be used for convenience. Too bad there is a mind set out there that it is a viable option for unwanted pregnancies, and the numbers don’t lie- lots of women abort.

do a search, higher rates of suicide, breast cancer, depression, etc. Seems pretty good reasons to critically rethink the “benefits” of abortion. Of course you will find some studies that claim no correlation, but a quick search will show you overwhelming research that DOES show a correlation and a couple of studies that claim otherwise. In my personal experience working with families, it causes very long lasting problems, physical and mental. Though I have not personally conducted research, just an observation in real life.

You should be sitting there happy, knowing that this country legally supports and pays for your right to kill babies. Ahh, the liberal mind, it‘s ok to be a baby killer if you’re a mom, but not if you are a soldier. HAHAHAHA- the inconsistency is so obvious and laughable. 2nd try at posting a reply: LACT: Abortion is a serious medical procedure and shouldn’t be used as birth control. Aside from what my friend NOBAMAZONE states, it also scars the uterus and causes future still births and preterm baby death. As a nurse, and a woman who has grown up in the age of accessible abortions, I have had the opportunity to see what the deal is really about. Most women have abortions so they aren’t inconvenienced by the responsibilities of a baby. To say that this is about a “woman’s reproductive right”, is not the correct base for the argument- she has already reproduced when she aborts, now she is murdering a baby. I’ve witnessed women kill their unborn to finish school, college, not tell their boyfriend they were cheating,or wear their wedding dress (didn’t wan to change the size or have a baby belly). I’ve also witnessed women, who had numerous abortions, cry and grieve over still borns in their later years (when that child was wanted) and put them in caskets and give them proper funerals. Why is it ok to put one baby in a casket, but another in the MDs trashcan? I have come to the conclusion that our unborn are not being afforded their natural rights and are not protected by the Constitution (and they should be)- they are our ULTIMATE UNPROTECTED VICTIM & SLAVES TO WHIM. I argue this because WHY is a woman given the power to choose which baby is a life and which baby is just a“mass of tissue”.

Sorry baikonur, there is no such “Jewish law”. You are refering to the law which makes it a punishable murder after quickening. That was at the time the first time a child was known to exist in the womb as a living entity. The application would surely now change with the new technology and medical knowledge. Despite all that, abortion was NEVER acceptable among Jewish practices.

Liberal, take 15 minutes and read the Bible and you will find that even God’s prophets had problems. It doesn‘t mean they didn’t know what the right thing to do was, it meant they were human like you and I and we sin. No one has ever walked on this earth without sin except for one, Jesus Christ. The rest of us have sinned, many times.

Parents can teach Christians values 24 hours a day, it doesn’t mean that a child is going to be perfect. Nor does it mean the parent didn’t teach those values. It means humans sin. The difference is, are we willing to turn from that sin and ask for God’s forgiveness?

And on top of that are we willing to receive Christ as Savior and allow Him to guide us as we try to follow His example as found in the Bible.

Do you have children? What will (have) you taught THEM? Christian or not, will (have) you then teach them it is ok? At what age will (have) you tell them it is ok to start having sex? When they feel like it? How about by 10 or 12? What reason might an atheist give for telling their children to not have sex? Oh, I guess it would not matter much since you could always tell them, it is ok, we can get you an abortion if you happen to get pregnant. And if they happen to get an std? Then what do you tell them? Oh gee, who knew THAT could happen! Of what if that daughter ends up with cervical cancer (after all, much higher rate for those who have sex at an early age).
Once again, you show your total ignorance about true Christianity. We KNOW we are sinners, just like everyone else. We KNOW we are not perfect, and neither are our children. But that doesn‘t mean we don’t teach our children right from wrong anyway. What do you teach YOUR children? And WHY?

LOL, Ian, the pill works, and no young girl is prescribed it for ‘cramps’. Older women may be prescribed it for irregular and very heavy periods. Poor girl got pregnant inadvertently, and mama denied her an abortion. Whether this was the best choice for the girl, or not is not the issue.

The point is that all normal healthy teenagers have sex, it is not a moral failing on their part. Some will get pregnant. No one who does not have an education, career, or supportive family structure is able to care for a baby while living a normal life.

I remember not too long ago the story of pp whistle blowers telling of how they prescribe low dose birth control to young woman so they WILL get pregnant and come back for the money making abortion.
If she was on birth control for cramps it is likely they were low dose.

You do not know what you are talking about. Many young women ARE prescribed birth control for cramps, lack of regular menstrual cycles and even acne these days. And yes, women of all ages get pregnant while on birth control, if this were not true I would not have my oldest son. And fyi, I was married to his father for 11 years at the time, we had a 9 year old daughter, I had been told by the dr. that I COULD NOT have more children because of the problems I had delivering our daughter. I was prescribed the birth control not for birth control (did not need nor want it, was married and wanted more children) it was prescribed because of irregular menstruation and CRAMPS. You do not know what you are talking about!

I was plagued by severe monthly cramps until i took the pill. Though I didn’t get them for that reason ( I was a newlywed), I did notice my cramps were virtually gone while on the pill.

When I was in my teens, I was offered birth control pills as a method for controlling acne. I also have a friend (more acquaintance at this point) with extremely irregular periods, and I believe she was on birth control for that. And the cramping, you can totally be prescribed birth control for cramping. My memory is failing me right now, but I’m 90% sure I had a doctor/nurse suggest this to me in my early twenties. So in my experience, Bristol Pailin’s description seems perfectly believable, didn’t catch my eye at all. Your comment did, however. (Eh, obviously, I suppose.)

But in any case dude (or lady)…perhaps you should think carefully in future as to whether what you’re saying should be categorized as opinion or fact, so as to avoid mislabeling it.

“I don’t remember anything” doesn’t pass the smell test.

HOWEVER, Bristol‘s indiscretions do not reflect upon Sarah Palin’s leadership abilities, or Sarah’s intelligence, or her skills in governance.

On the contrary, Sarah’s e-mail scandal has proven her insightful, honest, sincere, dedication to her responsibilities in a governance position.

(not an endorsement, just my observations)

“Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”

Its amazing the ridicule that is dished out when people can hide behind anonymity.
