The Green Movement Hits Your Hard Drive? Now You Can ‘Recycle’ Computer Files

Before you just delete those old files cluttering up your hard drive, consider recycling them via the “Dumpster Drive.”

This video shows you just how easy it is to re-purpose computer files you were no longer using:

Dumpster Drive: File Sharing For Your Digital Trash from Justin Blinder on Vimeo.

UNLIKE the government-mandated “Green Revolution” that is currently being forced down your throat, this is a voluntary program. But wait, there’s more. Another benefit of the Dumpster Drive? You can look inside the dumpster, and if you find something you want, it’s free!

Hmmm, sounds like another version of P2P file sharing to me….although placing something in here by accident, such as a doc with your SSn and address can’t be all bad, …can it? :)

The bickest crock is that this not only *DOES NOT* save any energy or resources, it actually CONSUMES MORE energy!

The only thing an existing “trash” file is, is electron-manipulated media (magnets or similar.) When you “delete” something, it is simply marked for no further recognition or useage.

In order to “recycle” in this scheme, *MORE* electrons must be used to transfer that file over the internet (likely across many servers along the way,) to the holding server where it is again recorded to a media… then when the next person ‘downloads’ it the whole process reproduces itself all over again.

MOST IMPORTANTLY… what non-secure data would anyone want to use off of anyone else’s files???

This is as silly as the old “internet mall” idea from a decade ago…

What an awesomely stupid idea! When you delete a file, it‘s usually because you don’t want it AND don’t want anyone else to have it. If I want to share a file with someone, I’ll upload it for them.

This is just a file sharing set up to follow govt. rules. They have the right to dig through your trash once you throw it out. This is set up to follow those rules. It can have it’s share of problems.

I can see this being used for Peer to Peer file sharing as well as a way to distribute infected files. I think I will voluntarily choose to NOT participate in this bad idea just waiting to be exploited. It will probably suck in lots of gullible people, you know, the ones who send money in response to that email from Nigeria.

I don’t know if it is a Joke but it will be for those that take advantage of this idea. What is not being said is that the way that the original files were deleted in M$ OS systems. They actually were not deleted and there are programs that can reclaim them that were part of the OS, anyone remember “UN-Delete”?, it proved that your files were never really deleted just renamed until that spot was rewritten with a newer file. M$ just replaced the first character with the tilde (~) to get the OS to overlook those files and then report the file deleted and that chunk of the HDD platter as usable for a new file…

Not a joke, amigo. There is someone this stupid in Existence, and may the Gods have mercy on them, because Darwin will not.

As to the file recovery of deleted files, I can do that, I have done that as part of my job function and as a side business. Nothing scary there. I can even point you in the direction of a really good and robust undelete package for the latest systems.

This is great news. I’ve been discarding old files around my yard for years. Now I can let those files slowly decay back into the earth and not worry about building up too thick of a layer which been hindering my lawn from flourishing. I’ll also be able to reduce my use of fertilizers as well. This is a win-win for me at least.

It’s terribly evil for people to put out stuff for free, instead of throwing it away like a good red-blooded American, right?

At most trash places in communities, people will set things beside the dumpsters, which means “If you want it, take it.” It gets thrown away if not picked up on trash day. I picked up a 1900 edition of the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin this way.

This is just the high tech equivalent of it.

For my fellow hackers, there’s actually a much more sanitary way of doing this, and you can get paid for it too: gazelle.com will buy old electronic stuff (just got $60 for my old cell phone) which they turn around and resell for a profit.

Foobear, are you really that stupid? You don’t understand how this is different? I’m pretty deep into tech, and even I wouldn’t want to try this out on a throw-away computer to see if I could make it work without giving up any information. Dolt.

There are plenty of ways to ”share” data whos conception didn’t spawn from a concusion.
