The History Channel Yanks Kennedy Miniseries Produced by Conservative
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — The History Channel will not air a controversial miniseries it produced about the Kennedy family, saying the multimillion project that had become the network’s most expensive on record did not fit the “History brand.”

The eight-part series had already been completed, and starred Greg Kinnear and Katie Holmes as President John F. Kennedy and his wife, Jackie. But during its production, critics like former Kennedy administration aide Theodore Sorenson attacked the scripts as inaccurate. The role of producer Joel Surnow, a political conservative, also drew suspicion from fans of the Kennedy family.

“We have concluded this dramatic interpretation is not a fit for the History brand,” the network said in a statement late Friday.

The decision was first reported Friday by the Hollywood Reporter.

History, in its statement, said the decision was made after viewing the series in its totality.

“We recognize historical fiction is an important medium for storytelling and commend all the hard work and passion that has gone into the making of the series, but ultimately deem this as the right programming decision for our network,” History said in a statement.

Spokesman Michael Feeney said there would be no further comment.

Messages left with Surnow’s agent and lawyer were not immediately returned on Friday.

History is owned by the A&E Television Networks, which itself is owned jointly by NBC Universal, the Walt Disney Co. and the Hearst Corp.

It’s not clear who made the decision to pull the plug on “The Kennedys,” given the joint ownership. A top Disney executive, Disney-ABC Media Networks co-chairwoman Anne Sweeney, is also on the board of directors for the Special Olympics, the organization started by the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver, President Kennedy’s sister.

Liberal filmmaker Robert Greenwald was behind a petition drive to get the movie shelved. A website, stopkennedysmears.com, was set up with a short film that attacked the miniseries.

The decision was reminiscent of CBS’ 2003 decision not to air a miniseries based on the life of President Ronald Reagan, which had also attracted political controversy prior to airing. The series later aired on the Showtime pay cable network.

Greenwald said more than 50,000 people had signed his petition.

“I’ll never understand why the History channel let it get as far as it did — they’re intelligent people over there — but we’re pleased that they came to this decision,” he said.

His YouTube film quoted Sorenson, a former adviser to Kennedy, calling a script he had seen of “The Kennedys” vindictive and malicious. Sorenson said scenes in the script that depicted him meeting with President Kennedy did not occur.

Greenwald said he had been slipped a copy of the script while the film was casting actors. His film included a “dramatization” of some of the scenes, including one where President Kennedy supposedly tells his brother Robert about why he needed to have sex with different women.

It’s not clear whether that scene, or others that he depicted, ever made it into the final film.

Although History is not airing it, “The Kennedys” is expected to be seen elsewhere around the world. History does not control rights to the film outside of the United States and the company that does, Muse Entertainment, has sold rights to various other networks. It is scheduled to air March 6 in Canada, for example.

The film would have aired in this country during the 50th anniversary of the start of the Kennedy presidency.

Why would NBC want to tarnish the God like image of the greatest martyr in the Democratic party’s history? Of COOOUUUUURRRRRSE thet don’t want a conservative to make a movie about their little man-god. His image is supposed to live foreveeeeeer. Inspiring the wittle children. It is funny how petty these weak freaks actually are. They control almost everything 70% of everything people see, read and hear yet one STRAW will break their broken down camel’s back. People WILL find out they have been brainwashing children for the last half decade with the HOAX of man made “global warming”. And the TRUTH will prevail! And it will utterly destroy their credibility along with their ideology, respect, power and presence. And I will sit there and LAUGH.

Yep, if you discredit witness testimony on one point in a court of law, the whole testimony becomes suspect.

Yep, there‘s plenty or room to question JFK’s history. There are a lot of dots that have never been connected. I really, really hope this is just the beginning of the connection of those dots and not the end. Keep asking, keep questioning, keep demanding to know more about this.

Dad was rich and wanted his boys to run the country the way he wanted and to carry on his name. The boys became politicians (which speaks for itself). They apparently weren’t of a mind to be faithful to their wives or perhaps there was an agreement with their wives that they would be discreet. The wives knew the game and carried on the family name producing more Kennedys and nice pr photos. It doesn’t sound much different than what goes on today. There are deals made all the time and none of the people were perfect. The 60s version of Camelot didn‘t exist except in the mind’s of those who wanted to believe in the attractive family, attractive and fashionable couple, and in hope for better things. Even in those imaginary castles people used the bathrooms, had illnesses, family secrets, etc. So, all of this has been chewed on already for decades along with other events. Tell me what‘s new in the film that I won’t be allowed to see because someone has clout?

More ways they are trying to change history. They want to preserve the Kennedy myth! Anybody notice how a dem will say he wants to be like Kennedy but do more or less what LBJ did? Nobody would ever say they want to be like LBJ. Like the trailer said, its the myth that counts! I encourage the people that made this to keep fighting. Fight the historical revision of the liberal left.

The Kennedy’s had alot of skeletons in their closets. Unlike most families they had the money and political pull to keep their family above the law. As the stories began to come out years ago many were devastated to learn the truth. They were an interesting family but their lives were filled with many scandles and much heartbreak. I have enjoyed the history channel in the past but lately they seem to be leaning somewhat to the left.If this series was cancelled because the facts were incorrect that is one thing. However if it were cancelled from the pressure from the progressives that puts everything in a different light. I would like to see it and judge for myself, then I guess that I would have to make a decision about whether or not to trust the accuracy of the history channel.

You don’t have to bring politics into every single thing. They made a call on it‘s accuracy as history and whether or not to air a drama on History Channel and it’s impact on branding. Not everything is a leftist plot, actually it makes even more sense from a business stand point.

JFK is considered by many today to be more of a Conservative than most conservatives. He did try to end the Fed. He took on the Ruskies and was strong on defense. I’m not a fan of make believe image types but he seemed to be the right man at the right time. He was certainly no Obama. I‘d like to see this movie just to look back to those days when America was on top and I’m sure they did a good job with the making it look like the 60′s. People will see them use real phones and Americans driving cool big cars.

Kennedy, Ike, Harry Truman, all combat vets. None of them liberals, but you could say conservative democrat for Kennedy and Truman. Ike was a mild conservative. Until one of the current generation of combat vets from Iraq/Afghanistan gets to high office (Col. Allen West!), we won’t see the difficult decisions get implemented. We’re on the right track, but the withering opposition will wear them down unless they get a constant stream of public support.

There’s a valid reason on why Kennedy started issuing silver credits and it directly related to the efficient functioning of the Fed AT THE TIME under current law. You’re smart. You can find it.

Fact: JFK was a womanizer. Fact: somehow none of this mattered and he ended up being a decent president. His most memorable quote should be something we conservatives/libertarians should place on flags today to remind the liberals that it’s not what government can do for us but what we can do for ourselves and our country.

There are some conservative voices here in Massachusetts. The problem with the Kennedy “Mystique” is Joe was a bootlegger and a criminal, He paid $100 million (by his own admission) for election. Jack was no better. The old timers here remember him with rose colored glasses, the truth is (an anyone who knew them will tell you), they were drunks, they were shtooking anything with a pulse, they were using their money to bully everyone they could and they were thieves. As someone who grew up in Massachusetts, I can regail you with story after story, but those kool-aid drinkers who loved Jack, mourned for Bobby and elected Teddy because they thought he was Jack never want to hear the bad stuff. They kept going to the polls on election day, putting Fat Teddy in and teaching their kids it’s dirty to be anything but a Democrat. It’s like fighting brain washed North Koreans here.

@ Cheezwhiz I think it is about the fact that JFK had so many affairs while he was President and told Brother Bobby why he (JFK) needed to have so many different women,I can’t remember the others he had affairs with other than Marilyn Monroe being the most talked about,His people worked very very hard to cover up for him, He made Clinton look like and amateur,

I guess the part where Teddy drives his car into the lake and then goes home for a nap while his date drowned was too much. Or maybe it was the corruption of Daddy Kennedy that made all the money in the first place. Or maybe it was JFK screwing everything that walked or maybe it was Robert making deals with organized crime for cash…I dunno, but the truth will set you free…They don’t want to hear it.

I think JFK was an insider that grew afraid at what was happening
to America and so he turned against the powers that put him in office
then suddenly they were bringing out all his affairs.
      Funny that works.

Hollywood is not known for their strict adherence to accurate history when making films like this. They take an editing pen and cross events out and freely add opinionated events that never occurred. Just look at what they do to biblical stories. By the time the movie comes out, the public gets a inaccurate and even false idea of the facts. It is 75% fiction and 25% semi-fact.
So, I say, good for the History Channel.

Uh, J. Edgar Hoover wanted JFK to stay away from a certain woman who was familiar with a certain mobster out of fear of damage to the Presidency. That assertion was on one of the DVD’s I viewed this past summer, and the assertion was made by someone close to the administration.

As far as the womanizing trail, man oh man, is that a long and winding trail, but Bobby appears to have been far more straight laced in that regard than JFK – from info I have researched.

I think “The History Channel” was in the process of raising a lot of questions that have merit. I‘ve already connected a lot of dots regarding the Kennedy’s, after doing extensive research, but I’ve never, ever seen that done in the media. I think “The History Channel” had a great project in the making, but one that the left wing media knew would be extensively damaging to the false image of a Democrat party icon revered as morally impeccable.

@ tower 7 … Yes, I do think many things you write are far fetched, but this one has caught my attention. For those of you who may have a hard time gathering how the “Feds” have caused many deaths in our nation in order to protect their ability to make money off the interest of our debt. Most believe this is the main reason Lincoln was assasinated as well. The same goes for the attempted murder of President Jackson as he was looking to remove the power away from the Federal Reserve as well. Fortunately, the man who tried to kill him has a misfire with the gun he was using. Of course he went to court and was let off for being mentally insane. It was said that while drunk in a bar later, he had admitted being hired by people from the Bank of England. The same evil corrupt power weilding people who have fought to make sure they kept these powers to print money in their hands since the founding of our nation. There a great deal of documented history relating to these evil bastards .. If you have a good few hours, watch this documentary , “Money Masters” on You Tube. I warn you, once you start watching, you won’t be able too stop. This Documentary explains and supports how monitary systems have been the root of evil since the times dating back to even before Christ. Check it out. I was actually very spooked, as I am even now a little, when I post this. Not much spooks me either but this really does… I may need to watch this again ..

At Tower7, I will check this out, I already had a strong feeling that this is who this was. They control and own the media, judges and politicians. The Federal Reserve or International Bankers are the ones behind the Euro. The best part about this doco is that it is not conspiratorial in any ways, it is backed by facts and documented information to support any assumptions they bring to the table ..

This is no joke and infuriates me … These are those who wish for One World Government, Woodrow Wilson, that EVIL VILE man !! He gave the bank back to these people… So Beck is right about him … We must end this and take back our monitary system. These people have no Loyalty to America, they only see us as standing in the way now .. There is so much more, with big Industry and other avenues they had to gain control over, but the Federal Reserve will is setting the final stage to collapse our Great Nation… but not with out a fight .. PLease watch this video, a brief truth of all you need to know.. the rest you can research yourself ..

The History Channel‘s position is that conservatives are incapable of producing a historical docudrama that wouldn’t be hopelessly biased? But they don’t ave problems interviewing Doris Kearns Goodwin, et al for their ‘official’ views of presidencies…

The ironic part is that with the exception of the dalliances, Kennedy would be a social and fiscal conservative in comparison to the bunch calling themselves democrats today.

Kennedy had changed his mind. the powers that be control those in their places by whatever means they can, such as sex. Because of his fathers connection the nazi party, he was a prime fit to be president. on youtube look up “amazing jfk speech! he tells you the truth”. This whole conservative v.s. liberal bs is destroying the country, but what can we do about it. Conservatives will believe anything republicans tell them and liberals will let dems do whatever. anyone remember when Glenn Beck played the interview of Ben Bernake saying “we are creating a world government”? @Dustyluv

No, it was the truth that the end of the Cuban Middile Crisis came about when the Soviets, in a panic, ordered their missle systems removed immediately.

Contrary to the BS that the left and its media machine have spewed out over the last 48 years, it was not some deft back-room diplomacy that ended the crisis.

In fact, the Soviets were the ones who were MOST anxious to get the missiles out of there. You see, Castro was calling for an immediate attack on the United States with those weapons and it was the Soviets who said: “He is a madman; get the war heads out of there now and get the rest as fast as possible and tell the Americans that if they must, they can invade and we will help them.”

Now… there is a reason that I can quote that, because it is exactly what Premier Nikita Khrushchev
said. The Soviet position was one of utter panic, BUT Kennedy and his staff of very inexperienced senior aids did not believe him, or Gen. Lemay, who asserted that the Soviets would do nothing to stop the invasion they themselves hoped we would execute to stop Castro.

Nikita Khrushchev was so shaken by the events and the thought of Castro having access to such weapons that he suffered a series of migrain headaches during the crisis and a near nervous breakdown. He was replaced in 64 in name only – in reality, he had not been in charge since mid of the crisis.

President Kennedy so badly managed the crisis that its legacy not only removed vital mediom ranged missles from Turkey and prevented their modernization, it ensured that Castro and other Communists would export death and abject poverty throughout the region unto this day. For example, Daniel Ortega is back in Nicaragua – a place where I helped to create and sustain a hospital, along with many others as part of the Friends Of Rudy (Rudy Vargas, MD – a dear friend determined to help people there).

The left and those who would subvert the memory of President Kennedy cannot have the truth be known. Kennedy was flawed, much too young, and not fully in control of his administration. That’s the truth and it cost millions of innocent people their lives and his later rush into South East Asia (Vietnam) wsa in response to his feelings that he had let the people of OAS down and bungled the Cuban Missile Crisis so badly. The depiction of Gen. Lemay, a thoughtful man who wanted to prevent all wars, by remaining very strong, has been particularly terrible and flat out wrong. The left does nothing but lie and they have so twisted history, very few people without direct access to the decrypts, can ever know the truth. Oh, and the truth is always far more interesting than the fiction, or anything in film. The reality is that Hollywood doesn’t have much by way of imagination at all.
