The Latest in the Mob Attack on the Man in Ala.: No Hate Crime Charges & Victim’s Criminal Past

No Arrests in Mobile, Alabama Mans Brutal Beating | Matthew OwensMobile, Ala. police still have not made any arrests in the brutal beating of a white man allegedly at the hands of a black mob, WKRG-TV reported.

Matthew Owens remains hospitalized following what witnesses described as 10 to 20 assailants beating him with bricks, bats, pipes, paint cans and other items. The case drew particular media attention after reports that one of the attackers allegedly said afterward, “Now that’s justice for Trayvon.”

Police had said they hoped to make an arrest by the end of Tuesday.

Despite the charged nature of the case, police said they are not treating the incident as a hate crime.

“No, it’s not. It’s being investigated as an assault,” Ashley Rains, public information officer for the Mobile Police Department, told Fox News.

According to WKRG, the attack was allegedly prompted after Owens came after a group of black kids with kitchen knives after they lost a basketball in his yard. As many as 20 people returned a short time later armed with makeshift weapons, witnesses said.

David Dinkins, one of the kids playing, told Mobile NBC affiliate WPMI-TV Owens confronted them and started swearing and hurling racial slurs.

“We said we’re sorry,” Dinkins, one of the kids playing, told WPMI. “He said ‘get the F out of the yard!’”

Neighbors told the station it‘s not the first time they’ve heard Owens make racially-charged statements.

“He said he’s going to lynch all the black kids, he hates black n—–s, he hates that we moved on this street,” Lemicka Whisenhunt, who lives at the opposite end of the street, told WPMI.

She told WKRG, “He cussed these kids out. Called them n—–s. Stupid n—–s.”

Owens is now conscious and police were able to speak to him Tuesday. He is listed in serious condition.

According to WKRG, Owens has been arrested multiple times over the past 12 years on charges including domestic violence, assault and sex abuse. His first arrest was Nov. 4, 1990 for assault; he was last arrested in March 2011 on a domestic violence charge.

    mob rules…..so the police are no longer necessary? this is what happeneds when the prez makes the police seem unnecessary….and the doj will not do their job or do the right thing………..most of the AMERICAN people are good decent hardworking honest GOD fearing law abiding and that’s what makes AMERICA great…it’s a asmall group of thugs community organizational groups and the such that make it all look bad……….

    This is the difference between the white people of the 1920′s and the whites of today, back in the good old days those people would have already been tried and convicted, today lets not make King Sharpton angry with a arrest, this is amazing.

      So…Using the “N” word, and defending your property is now a capital offense? And it’s okay for a vigilante mob to execute the sentance? If this guy is such a criminal why isn’t he in prison? Why are kids now allowed to ignore the requests of property owners, and how many of these kids made inflamatory comments in reply? Maybe if they were out looking for jobs instead of playing hoops the unemployment rate among black youth wouldn’t be 50%, and the noise and trespassing from the B-Ball wouldn’t have been a problem. How many of the 20 assailants have a job? It doesn’t sound like they were called home from work. So, we have a low-life white guy, insulting low-life black kids, resulting in low-life adults assaulting the first low-life. Does anyone see a pattern? I don’t know anything about this neighborhood, but it sound pretty foul, and dangerous. I’ve seen nice neighborhoods quickly destroyed when low-lifes move in. I‘d make a plea for civility but there’s no point. Some people are more concerned with violent redress of any insult for civility to prevail. I’m buying an assault rifle. Thanks BO, Al, Jessie, and AGH. I hope your doing this on purpose, because if not, your mentally challenged. Just tell the truth. We are the generals in a race war that’s begun. Property will be really cheap in some of these towns when half the people are dead.

    one second. Is there a law against having a loaded weapon at your house????. If a mob of people (any race, gender or anything) comes on anyone else’s property with weapons your saying they dont have a right to defend themselves??

      Dude in question was prolly barred from owning firearms due to previous issues of the legal sort-especially a domestic one. No go on guns after that until expunged-check a state and fed gun form next time you purchase one. Even if the dude was a redneck POS, nobody deserves a mob beat down in their own front yard-we are still sort of a country of laws. In places, where whites usually congregate, for some reason. Odd that bit.

    So, if you yell “racial slurs” which you CAN (pesky 1st amendment and all) the “black lynch mob” will take out “justice”??? SO, the police were not called about his “verbal, knife weilding threat”? Oh no!! Since it’s a couple days before the governement check comes in and the Oprah show has been cancelled…..they form a lynch mob?!?!? If this was me, my wife would be shooting everything that wasn’t below the three foot mark and THEN what would the headlines be??? Even more it would have been on MY property…..ahhh Florida and the Castle Law is the way ALL states should be!!!

    Ok, so now the victim is responsible. Is that it? Twenty people lynch him and make sure that their stories are straight, and I am sure that he deserved it. Everytime blacks attack whites the first thing they yell is he called me a n******. Once that happens obviously the white person deserved it. I am sure those kids are honest too. So where is the knife? Why didn’t the black people call the police if the kids were threatened with a knife? Is this how it works for the blacks? ” We gonna handle our own business,” and the government says,”Ok, just so long as it is a white person you do it to we don’t care.” I think our present government has become so corrupt that maybe we need to consider other options.

      The Obama October surprise may be shut down of ATM, gas stations and a declared bank holiday. Your credit card will not work and the only cash you can get will be the cash you have. Checks will not be valid because of the inability to verify the accounts. This has happened in other nations and Congress gave Obama has the legal authority do it. Unless Americans begin to mobilize the outcome does not look good.

      According to a poster in this thread, if somebody steps in his yard they deserve to be shot.

      Owens initiated the entire thing. He was the one who came at them with knives. We all talk about how we would handle things and give the guy a beat down if that happened to our kids, yet when the parents did the same thing you condemn it and say its wrong.

      If he was beaten at the time he was threatening the children with a knife, it may have been justifiable. To come back later with a mob for a lynching is not the correct way to handle this.

      Get the children to safety first, intervene with force if necessary, then call the police.

      tropolis – IF what the kids said is true, I will not defend his words. But, that does not excuse the actions of the blacks that beat him. I have heard black Congresspeople say horrible things about whites. Should they be beaten to a pulp?? I heard black protesting Trayvon Martins death say terrible things about whites. Should they be beaten??

      This is how it will happen all the time. A white person will get the life kicked out of him or her and the blacks that did it will just say “ He/she called me a racial slur” and then it will be over. Ok you said so.     None of that information makes any difference. He should have not been attacked and beaten over a basketball. Had the roles been reversed the news media and the police would be say the kids should have simply called the polce to get the basketball back. It would also be a hate crime. I am tired of this discrmination and attacks on whites. Because a person hates blacks does not give them the right to beat him. I will bet the police in Mobile are led by a black police chief. I am tired of black racism against whites. Keep in mind….we are hearing the blacks side of the story……if this man ever comes out of his coma…we will hear the other side.

    so let me figure this out. if one of the new black panthers who are on camera saying such kind things such as, “kill they babies” is attacked by a white mob the white mob gets a hate crime pass because of what the new black panther has said.

    I think not.

    I am hoping that when the administration changes we go back and prosecute all those who broke the law and got a pass because of a racially forgiving Attorney General and his boss.

    Just as I figured would happen; no hate crime charges will be pursued, and now the media is making the victim into the villain; I can imagine Holder is preparing bring the man to trial for federal level charges of civil rights violations of his attackers attacking him.

    This is just one more thing the administration will use to their advantage.

      Snow, that has me wondering. The media is making the victim into the villain? I have a radio or TV on the news just about all day and keep the computer on the internet for the better part of the day. So far, I heard one very brief mention of this incident on Fox & Friends this morning making it the only other place other than The Blaze where I have caught anything regarding this incident. Correction, I did hear one local radio news broadcast mention the incident and only to say that it would not be dealt with as a hate crime. And, I am in Alabama. In fact I am listening to our local radio news at this moment…and nothing again on this case. I also flip through the news shows on TV and have seen nothing else on this. No argument with you, but I just wonder what part of the media is making him the villain now? I do recognize the fact that there very well be a news blackout in this state so as not to incite the locals. That has happened before.

    No matter what his past is, what remains important are the facts of what happened in the event specifically. Just like the Martin case I will remain neutral until all the facts come out. But, one thing does remain critical… the mob came onto his property and attacked him.

    I can tell I am not going to like this guy, but it doesn’t matter what he did-they could have called the police-what they did was 1000% worse. Taking the law into your own hands and beating the hell out of someone is wrong. Period. They can try to make it look any way they want, but twenty people on one guy is WRONG.
